10 Steps to Finding and Hiring the Best Child Care Center Staff

Unfortunately, very hard work and pretty low pay are not terribly attractive to job seekers. On the other hand, caring for and working with young children does sound great!

Hiring new child care center staff is unquestionably a difficult job. Hiring a new, hardworking, dedicated staff member is even harder. Let’s examine some steps that you can take to find this “diamond” for your center. This may seem like a lot of steps to complete, but many of them you will only have to work through once and then just update. It’s good to put in the work up front so that you can limit staff turn over by hiring the right people from the start.

Step #1: Be really clear in your job posting. Never “sugar-coat” the job expectations. You may end up luring in a candidate that has no intention of working as hard as the job requires.

Clearly state:

• who you are – how long in business, size of your company, mission in serving
• what you are looking for – full or part time, hours, degree required
• who you are looking for – skills required, temperament
• what you pay (a range) and when the job starts
• how to contact you – email a resume, come in person at a set time. (Note: if you do not require your workers to use a computer fluently, should you expect them to be computer fluent for the job application?)

Tell applicants you want:

• a resume or work history
• information on any child care education they have
• state clearance form completed
• statement of why they want to work for you – what do they bring to you and the children

Step #2: Advertise in far-reaching reputable websites and publications. Check pricing as it varies greatly. Free is not always best, but the most expensive won’t necessarily prove to be the most fruitful.

• • look at popular websites – LinkedIn, Monster, Craigslist, etc.
  • look at local newspapers
  • look at church bulletins

Step #3: Prepare a checklist of how you will evaluate each candidate. This can be as simple or elaborate as you like.

Step #4: Accept and review applications. Complete the evaluation checklist for each.

Step #5: Schedule a phone interview with the top 5 candidates. Schedule – don’t just call and expect anyone to be ready for an impromptu job interview.

Step #6: Personally interview at least 3 candidates. Tell them in advance that it will be a two hour interview.

• Spend a few minutes one-on-one with the candidate to see if he/she is even a viable candidate. Be careful not to always judge a book by its cover.
• If you feel good about this candidate, have the candidate spend a good hour in the center, talking to staff and interacting with children.
• Then, meet with the candidate and ask them to reflect on the job they saw.

Step #7: Make your decision about who to choose. Make the job offer and be sure to talk about a probationary period.

NOTE: You have put in a lot of work to this point. Don’t drop the ball and let it all be for not.

Step #8: Provide orientation to the new employee. Cover every step and don’t assume the new person knows anything. (You know what they say about “assuming”.)

Step #9: Conference with your need staff member every day for the first week (5-10 minutes) and 2-3 times a week for the next month. This is a critical piece to (1) keeping an employee and (2) finding out why an employee would leave / where you went wrong in Steps # 1-8.

Step # 10: Keep great notes each time you do this so that you do not repeat unsuccessful avenues.

So, can you uncover the real employee from the interviewee? Many people interview very well but then don’t do as well on the job. Steps #6-9 will help you to ensure you are hiring the person you thought you were.

It is a lot of work to hire a new employee. A lot of work. But there is no getting around it. You have to have employees to run the center. The better the employees, the better the center. This will be, for sure, one of your hardest jobs.

Kindergarten work in Finland

Kindergarten work in Finland proved to be a test of strength for me.

Kindergarten teacher and lastentarhanopettaja (professional name in Finnish) are two very different things. In Russia, educators are trained in teacher training schools, in Finland – at universities. Our University of Jyväskylä has a whole department of early childhood education. It is very difficult to get into a Finnish university, and it is almost impossible to get into the department of early childhood education. It’s not about the competition – it’s great, but about the requirements for applicants. The average score is high, exams are difficult, interviews with psychologists are required. I was able to “infiltrate” the university only thanks to my first education received in Russia. After confirming my diploma and studying at the University of Jyväskylä at the Department of Finnish for Foreigners, I was assigned the right to study subject disciplines in preschool education. But they do not give the competence to work in Finland as this very educator! To do this, you need to re-enter the department and study-study-study . ..

However, I managed to get this position quite by accident. There was a year-long vacancy to replace a kindergarten teacher, and I, used to sending my resumes to all places, knocked on that door too. I must say right away that they took me only due to a combination of circumstances, I just met the same white crow as myself. This crow turned out to be a director and Swedish by nationality. This Swede loved Spain, just like me.

The very appearance of the woman who invited me for an interview surprised me. I was impressed. Imagine the director’s office… There are completely bare feet of a middle-aged, rather large, even huge woman in it. The hem of the dress, occasionally exposing thick tanned thighs. And this does not bother Madame herself at all. She sits in her bossy chair and draws up employment contracts with employees.

Sterile floor covered with rustic colorful rugs. And again – like a vision – bare legs, big feet, fresh varnish on large fingers. The director of the kindergarten slaps these “outstanding” bare feet in the office, corridors, play and study rooms of the territory under his jurisdiction.

She is a director, a big boss. It is in her power to decide the fate of people like me. We are looking for a job, and she hires us. I sit on a chair in front of the hostess. She laid out cards, laminated diplomas and certificates like a fortune teller. I sell myself, bargain for better, more stable conditions. Oh, for me this is an interesting process, reminiscent of hunting. I’m looking for luck. And she smiles at me, good luck. Probably, my delight from these fleshy bare legs is transmitted. I noticed a long time ago that I love big women. They, like living monuments, amaze my imagination with the grandeur of forms, the boldness of strokes.

This woman has reached the top: she is a director, she has a high position in the local society, in bureaucratic circles. He is friends with his own kind, they all live nearby, in the most prestigious area of ​​​​a cozy town. I love her big toe on her left foot. The nail is wide, convex and shiny from varnish. Strong bone, firm step, tight, most likely elastic forms under the dress. I lust with the desire to poke a finger at least in her side, not to mention other places of the magnificent female body.

She understands my far from flawless Finnish well, she doesn’t consider it her own, although, of course, she speaks much better than me. She is a Finnish Swede, a descendant of those same Swedes who did not want to leave the western coast of Finland. The Swedes have lived here since time immemorial, and no wars or state changes have pushed them from their homes. These Swedes have retained their language, their influence in the country to this day. Perhaps they secretly despise the natives, the “true Finns”, perhaps, in spite of them, this strong woman, who looks like a Neanderthal, hired me, a Russian, to work. I need to impress. I squirm in front of a Neanderthal. And I convince you that it is me who needs to be taken to this place. Like a glass bead for a savage, my super high education. Sacred phrase: “I am a master.” This degree entitles me to apply for a position as a kindergarten teacher.
