So, you don’t want to work for the Man. In fact, you want to be the Man – or possibly the Woman. Then owning your own business is the career for you. The small business owner is the backbone of the American economy. Ninety-nine percent of all employers are small business owners. They provide 75% of the new jobs created every year, and they are responsible for 96% of all exported goods. Small business owners work out of garages, small stores on Main Streets, and huge corporate campuses. Before you begin selling t-shirts in Time Square or offering oranges in Orlando, you need a business plan. A business plan is your roadmap to success. It includes a description of your product or services, how you are going to finance your business (loans, investors, grandma), deadlines for your business and the ultimate goal. As a small business owner, you need to be aware of the six Ms: MISSION – you have to know exactly what your services will do for client. MARKET – you have to know who your client is and how you can find them. MESSAGE – your mission has to be clear enough that your market understands who you are and what you have to offer. MEDIA – This is the best way to get your message out there (radio, print, television, sky writers). METHOD – You know what to do, with whom, with what, when and how to do it. You’re in control of your business. MANAGEMENT – this is you, operating your business in such a way that your clients are completely satisfied. An ideal small business owner knows how to make plans, solve problems, hire, train, motivate, and lead employees. Being a small business owner is risky; it is probably the most risky legal career you can choose. But, with a lot of hard work – a lot of hard work – a dash of determination, and a dollop of luck, the rewards of starting your own business are excellent (think Bill Gates).

Paying Your Dues



Starting your own business is not easy. Some statistics show that small businesses will not see a significant profit for two years (although you do need to show a profit after the third year, or the IRS might think you are trying to hide something). Owning your own business is not a 9 to 5 job. Self-employed contract workers (writers, consultants) may work long hours under tight deadlines, while store owners spend anywhere from 80 to 120 hours or more a week maintaining their business. And then there are the regulations. Federal laws, state laws, city laws, all must be followed in order to remain in business. Small business owners have to adapt to the ever-fickle customer. Pet rocks may have been hot a few decades ago, but if you’re still trying to sell them today, you don’t have to look hard to see why your business is going under.

Present and Future



The small business owner has been around since the days of bartering services. Throughout the years, small business owners have provided goods and services, employment, and government taxes. In a society based on capitalism, the small business owner can thrive, as long as they provide a product or a service that people need or just plain want. Today, over 66 percent of new businesses remained open 2 years, 49 percent at least 4 years, and 30 percent at least 6 years. In 1999 588,900 new small businesses opened their doors, while 528,600 closed up shop. However, of those that closed, over half said they were successful when they packed it in. Three percent of the self-employed own franchises, and over half work at home.

Long hours, little rest, meager amounts of money – all of this and more fill the first two years of being your own boss. This is the make or break time, when almost 40 percent of new businesses fold. But, if you’ve got the will, determination, and the means, making it over the two year hump can give you the confidence – and cash – to continue.


FIVE YEARS OUT


By now, the small business owner has been working long enough to get the kinks out. Problems like delinquent suppliers, lack of customers, and possible employee dissatisfaction have been meet and hopefully resolved in a way that prepare the small business owner to meet the challenges of some of the bigger bumps in the road (like say an global economic slowdown).


TEN YEARS OUT


Most small business owners still around after ten years find they have more time on their hands. If business is strong, employees are happy and productive, and customers are satisfied, the small business owner can take more time to ponder the possibilities of expansion. One word: Franchise.

For most people, choosing a career path can be an overwhelming and anxiety-riddled task. With tons of occupations to choose from, it becomes a challenge to pick one that will make you happy and suit you perfectly at the same time. In this article, we will give you a comprehensive guide on how to find the best job for you.

 

Landing the Best Job for Your Personality

When figuring out the job that is the best fit for you, you must first learn as much as you can about yourself. By doing an assessment of your work personality, you will better understand which jobs to pursue to enjoy your career and be successful.
 

After exploring and understanding your work personality, if you are still unsure which career options might be right for you, you can seek the help of a career development expert or a career counselor who can provide coaching based on what you’ve learned about yourself.
 

For those who can’t afford to hire career development professionals, some public libraries or local agencies provide career planning and counseling. Most universities also have a career services office that is open to those who are enrolled, the alumni of the university, or sometimes even other members of the community. These can be valuable resources to utilize as you carefully plan your next step.

Identifying Your Work Style

The question: “What job should you have?” can be more specifically answered by identifying your work personality style. This is different from an assessment of your personality in general as it focuses specifically on who you are at work and how you work best. This assessment can be particularly helpful in identifying the right job that is in line with your strengths, determining areas of development, and ultimately in helping you focus on a career that will suit you best.
 

Once you fully understand your own work style, you will be able to identify the type of work environment in which you will thrive, pinpoint your career needs, and discover options that would work for you.

Take a Career Test

Taking a career test is probably the easiest way to figure out the perfect job for you. There are a lot of career assessments that are readily available online and are intended to guide you in choosing a career path. It is important you understand which type of career test you are taking.

There are interest tests (which help you identify careers you may be interested in, but do not necessarily assess if they are a good fit for you), aptitude tests (which assess which skills you currently have and how you could apply to them, but do not assess if these applications would be a good fit for either, nor do they suggest alternate career paths), personality tests (which assess your personality in general and suggest careers that may fit your personality), and work personality career test assessments (which focus on your personality in the workplace and suggest careers that would be a good fit for your work personality).
 

The best thing about taking a career test or quiz over the internet is that it is much more accessible and convenient (compared to taking a traditional pen-and-paper career test that can only be taken under the direction or administration of a career counselor or advisor).
 

These online assessments may be available at a low cost or even free of charge. When you take a free test, you will be provided with the results in the form of a report together with an analysis that will point you towards the most suitable jobs for you. Online career assessments coupled with professional guidance from a career development expert or counselor, if necessary, will help you build a solid career roadmap.

The Best Time to Take a Career Test

There is no single answer to the question of when it’s time to take a career assessment. You may take it when you are deciding on what courses to take in college, thinking about your next move after you graduate, or even when you are considering making a career change. However, it is best to take a career test as soon as you can to eliminate any confusion you may be having about your career path.

Making a List of Possible Occupations

Your career assessment will most likely include several possible occupations that are suitable for you, depending on several factors such as your personality, work style, aptitude, or interests.
 

The good thing about career tests is that they not only help the test taker confirm career paths they may already be considering, but they may also offer suggestions of careers and jobs that may not have been considered, but might be excellent choices. Hence, career assessments encourage greater flexibility of thought and help people have the courage to change jobs or move from one field to another suitable one with confidence. Doing a Job Search, as mentioned earlier, the results of your career test will provide you with a list of occupations that may be suitable for you. However, your journey in choosing the finding the perfect career doesn’t quite end there.

Some of these jobs may be a better fit for you compared to others on your list, so you should do a job search (or some job research) to get an idea of what each of these occupations entails. By doing some quick job research, you will get an idea of the demand for the job, the average salary, as well as the responsibilities and required education or training required for the job. With that knowledge, you will be better able to decide which career to pursue.
 

There is no better way to make an informed decision than going the extra mile researching the occupations recommended to you during your career assessment and exploring the possible career paths to take. Even if you think you already know about a particular job, you should still research it and put aside your preconceived notions that may be inaccurate. Unless you have prior experience related to a particular job or someone you know has the same position, you should explore career research until you feel you have a very good sense of what the job requires and what it would be like on a day-to-day basis.  

The next step is to find out what you need to do in order to be qualified for these jobs.

Is your education enough?

Do you need to pursue another degree, undergo more training, or take additional courses to increase your chances of being considered for the position?

 

You also need to decide if you have the time and resources to commit to the additional training or education required.
 

As part of exploring your career options, you should also look at a particular job’s demand. Before you decide to invest money and time to be qualified for a position, it is practical to find out if there are enough opportunities available. Knowing from the start that there are only limited opportunities for a particular job may redirect your career path, or conversely, if the demand is high it may encourage you to pursue the career.

Pushing Yourself Towards Your Chosen Career

After you’ve discovered what you are truly passionate about, you must be ready to fully commit yourself to it and not settle for less. No matter how difficult it may be at first, you must be willing to move towards your desired path relentlessly as this will be worth it in the end. Living a life that you would be proud of includes having a job that you love, and at the same time, allows you to earn a decent living. Once you manage to balance passion and practicality, you will surely be able to achieve the highest level of life satisfaction, happiness, and success.

While your job is not the only thing that matters in life, it is no secret that you will spend a huge part of your daily life working. Given this, it is incredibly important to find a job that fits you, fulfills you, and meets your financial needs.
 

When choosing the perfect career, there are a lot of factors that you should consider such as your interests, values, personality traits, competencies, skills, salary desires, the job’s duties and responsibilities, and job demand. Identify benefits that yield fit for you
Benefits are not just add-ons or perks. They keep you healthy, comfortable and well-positioned to enact your best work. Interestingly, 57% of job seekers weigh benefits among their top considerations before accepting a new role.

Not only will you find lists of benefits companies offer such as PTO, family leave, health, and dental insurance, 401K information, and details about flexible arrangements such as telecommuting, you can also read employees’ feedback about the coverage.

There is no such thing as a misstep; all experience provides information to learn from in order to move forward. It’s important to shed the expectation of having a clear linear professional path, or that it’s a ‘one and done’ process. Instead, embrace the mindset of an evolving career as personal priorities and market needs within your industry change over time.”

You’re learning how to choose a career. You’ve got a clean slate.

Start with Passion

 

Does that sound cliche?

 

It is. But only because most people misuse it.

 

So, don’t listen to it.

 

Wait—what?

 

The first step in answering what career is right for me is passion. But it’s just a step.

 

Your passion might be knitting on a desert island. Maybe you can do that, write a book, and make a million bucks.

 

But probably not.

 

So—start with passion, but don’t stop there.

 

Why Passion Makes a Great Career Finder

 

Every job has roadblocks. Passion slices through them like a lightsaber through ice cream.

 

“You can learn most things on the job,” says Steve Dalton, author of The 2-Hour Job Search. “The challenge is getting employers to want to do that with YOU.”

 

That means showing interest in the subject matter—and that comes from passion.

 

“In the end, the heart wants what it wants,” Dalton says. “As a chemical engineer by training, it absolutely kills me to say that, but truth is truth.”

 

Do you know your passions?

 

Sit down and daydream. Grab a coffee or a Buddha bowl. Make it fun.

 

List everything you love and all the things you’d love to do.

Define Wealth to Duck the Biggest Blunder of Your Life

 

“I wish I had a million dollars.”

 

You don’t have to wish.

 

As long as people need things, the world is a river of money.

 

You just have to know where to dip your bucket in.

 

When you ask, “Which job should I have,” or, “what career should I pursue,” wealth is a huge part of the answer.

 

Do you want $200,000 a year? Is $100,000 enough?

 

Or is wealth something else entirely?

 

Some people make millions and they’re miserable.

 

So—how to choose a career that makes you happy?

 

Wealth Might Be:

 

  • $100,000 a year
  • Working 20 hours a week
  • Living in a fantastic location
  • City living
  • Lots of family time
  • Work you love
  • Travel
  • Country living
  • Working with amazing people

 

Could it be all of the above? Or something else?

 

When choosing a career, be very clear at the beginning what you mean by “wealth.”

Build a List of Jobs You Can Love

 

So far, so good.

 

  • You’ve listed your passions.
  • You know what wealth means to you.

 

You’re well on your way to knowing how to choose a career.

 

Next, you need a list of job titles.

 

There are thousands.

 

Did you ever think you’d be a:

 

  • Chick Sexer
  • Accent-Reduction Specialist
  • Director of Sound Design
  • Orthoptist
  • Chief Storyteller?

 

Those are all real jobs.

 

Start with the biggest list that fits your goals.

 

Start With a Master List of Job Titles

 

Google search “list of jobs for” + [YOUR PASSION].

 

Example

 

Let’s say writing is your passion.

 

Do a Google search for “list of jobs for writers.”

 

You’ll find some big lists of all the careers you never heard of that relate to writing.

 

Journalist, speech writer, technical writer, executive assistant, acquisitions editor…

 

Scroll through five lists like that. Build your own mini-list of 10 jobs you think you’d love.

 

Then, move on to your next passion, and repeat.

 

Do the same thing with each skill you’re good at.

 

Last, add some dream jobs.

 

You’ll soon have a big list of 20–30 jobs that might just work.

 

Put them in the first column of a spreadsheet. You can call it, How to Choose a Career, What Career is Right for Me, What Job Should I Have, or just Career Finder.

Look at Salaries to Dodge the Pauper Zone

 

When asking what job is right for me, don’t say money doesn’t matter.

 

To quote Scholarships.com CEO Kevin Ladd, “You can’t buy happiness, but chicken breasts are $3.18 a pound.”

 

Find crossroads where your passion meets with piles of money.

 

To do that, use:

 

  • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook. It lists salary data for hundreds of careers. It’ll help you cross off low-paying jobs. (The data comes from U.S. Census surveys. )
  • Glassdoor.com. Use the salary search feature to find how much each job title pays. (The data comes from millions of real employees around the world.)

 

Both sites make great career finders.

 

In column #4 of your spreadsheet, add the median salary for each of your 20–30 job titles.

 

Pro Tip: Use salary as a baseline in your how to choose a career search. But question it. Glassdoor says bloggers make $30,000, but trust me, some make a lot more.

Architects make $78,470 a year, on average. But—

 

They need 5–7 years of school, plus 5,600 hours of work experience.

 

Most earn a lot less than the average.

Enneagram (from the Greek ennea – nine and grammos – figure) – a psychological model that combines nine types of personality , describes each type and the relationship between them.

Results

Type 1: Perfectionist or Reformer

Occupations 0027 : The office environment is great for your love of rules, organization, and attention to detail. Work where you need to improve business processes. The area of ​​education is also ideal for you.

Not the best choice : companies where the process has not yet been established (example: start-up).

Type 2: Friend or Helper

Occupations Possible : Community oriented caregivers – teaching, health care and counseling. Work in non-profit organizations and the service sector.

Not the best choice : anything that could harm others (example: law enforcement).

Type 3: Achiever

Possible professions : managerial positions or anything loud and public (example: project management, public relations, politics), project tasks where it is clear what result needs to be achieved and where they can be “challenging” tasks.

Not the best choice : no career advancement – only climbing to the top will satisfy your needs.

Type 4: Individualist

Possible professions : a career that allows you to express yourself and show your creativity, where you need to create a unique product, launch an unusual advertising campaign that will not leave people indifferent. Not every field provides such opportunities, most likely it is writing, psychotherapy and professions where you can show your uniqueness.

Not the best choice : companies that do not develop a system of non-financial motivation. Working solely for money is not your approach.

Type 5: Observer or Thinker

Possible professions : creating a strategy and vision for the development of a company, IT, scientific research.

Not the best choice : perhaps typical, “shallow” office work – there are too many distractions.

Type 6: Skeptic or Loyalist

Possible Professions : you will appreciate the development prospects in a large corporation, where you will be able to show your unique abilities in risk research and miscalculation of various options for further actions; great intelligence officers.

Not the best choice : Startup, small business, or any other company that loses out to the benefits of corporations.

Type 7: Optimist or Enthusiast

Possible Professions : areas where you can see opportunities around you, brainstorm different ideas. For example, the tourism industry, the work of a photographer or a writer, or a combination of all of the above.

Not the best choice : routine and endless work with documents is not your story.

Type 8: Boss or Leader

Possible Professions in which you cannot take responsibility, where there is no way to achieve ambitious goals; places where you will feel total control.

Type 9: Peacemaker or Mediator

Possible Occupations : Work at a slower pace and less stress. As an option, consider a career as a mediator, diplomat, product testing. You will like a place of work where you can create a family atmosphere and take into account the opinion of all employees during decision making.

Not the best choice : rate + bonuses for factorial or external performance (example: sales, investment banking or consulting).

Of course, you can track manifestations of different types in your character and behavior. In particular, this is due to the fact that we grow up in certain conditions, communicating with different people. And the enneagram does not drive people into “portrait frames” – on the contrary, it shows the path of personal development.

In the modern world, women run enterprises, ministries and even states. We asked female employees of SUEK Borodino enterprises to talk about their professional duties and prove to readers that the profession has no gender.

In any weather conditions, life is in full swing at the open pit storage area. Gearboxes, motors, rolled metal — crane operators are responsible for loading and unloading operations. You rarely see a woman driving a heavy car, but in any business there are happy exceptions – the fair sex, who cope with men’s tasks with a bang.

“I wanted to connect my life with pedagogy, but a chance decided everything – on maternity leave, I learned to be a crane operator, and immediately went to work at the Borodinsky open-pit mine. The main friend and assistant at work is, of course, the crane. The first thing I do at work is to climb to the height of a five-story building, start the mechanisms, listen to how the unit starts working. I immediately hear how the machine works – everything is smooth or some kind of failure, for so many years everything is already perceived by ear.

My work, of course, is not easy, it requires constant attention, responsibility, mutual understanding with slingers, we work in close tandem with them. Over the years that we have been working together, we have developed very good relations in the team, men help us, we help them. We work together, together! For 20 years now, I have been spending every working day at a height. I easily control the levers of a multi-ton colossus, I am responsible for loading and unloading operations.

My work is a part of me, my cranes (and we have three of them on the site) are also a part of me, I can’t imagine my life without them and my team,” says Irina Gorlova.

Natalya Shapkina, farmer at the Borodino Mechanical Repair Plant

Farming is an indispensable profession for manufacturing enterprises. At the Borodino Mechanical Repair Plant, the main part of the team is men, but there is also work for women in production. For some of them, men’s professions become not a single, but a family history.

“I came to the Borodino Mechanical Repair Plant to work in the footsteps of my mother, who devoted 32 years to this profession. Now, like her, I am making molding sand for casting. When I was little, I came to my mother at work and watched the earth run along the tape, and now, since 2004, I also work here with pleasure.

Preparing the material for the mixture, preparing it according to given recipes, distributing the finished mixture into bins – this work cannot be called boring and monotonous. Concentration, attentiveness, quick reaction – these are the qualities a farmer should have. Experience comes with age. Hard work, but interesting!” — says Natalia Shapkina.

Natalia Shapkina was inspired by her mother’s life’s work and followed in her footsteps.

Irina Ruzaeva, crane operator at the Borodino Loading and Transportation Department

Men traditionally do hard work at most enterprises. However, what can be done with the help of machines is entrusted to special equipment, at the “helm” of which the fair sex sometimes sits.

“I can’t imagine my life without working at the height! I started working in a car repair depot at 1984 in the compressor room, then moved to the levers of an overhead crane. I am the only woman in the team, I perform several hundred operations per shift.

Repair of dump cars ( railway freight car for the transportation and automated unloading of bulk cargo – ed. ) is a dynamic process. My duties include helping men, physically they have a hard job, and I perform certain actions with a crane. They give me signals, and I follow their instructions, in no case should I be distracted or relaxed. There was a time when I went to the crane in the locomotive depot, and I missed the cars so much that I returned to the car repair depot back to my dump cars.

Locksmiths, welders, foremen and foremen – each has his own character, his own history and destiny. I have to find a common language with everyone, I have been working with some of them in the same team for more than 30 years, ”Irina Ruzaeva shares her secret.

The fragile shoulders of Irina Ruzayeva also support the men’s work of the enterprise.

Women who work equally with men make an invaluable contribution to the development of the country every day. The results of the competition for the title “The Best State Inspector for Small Vessels of the Komi Republic in 2019” have been summed up. 38 inspectors from all over the republic participated in the competition. When choosing the winner, the indicators of work on control and supervision activities, inspection of bases, crossings and beaches, the effectiveness of control at water bodies and preventive work to ensure safety at water bodies during 2019 were taken into accountof the year.

The best state inspector for small boats in the Republic of Komi in 2019 was recognized as the senior state inspector for small boats, head of the Syktyvkar patrol service Alexander Molchanov.

Alexander Molchanov has been working in the system of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia for more than 14 years, during the years of work he took part in a large number of search and rescue operations, he saved dozens of lives on his account.

He knows “like the back of his hand” the navigational, navigable and hydrometeorological situation of controlled water bodies, as well as the location and operation features of supervised vessels.

In 2019, the best inspector conducted 56 raids and patrols, identifying 67 violations. Conducted classes in educational institutions and children’s camps more than 50 times. Participated in the certification of 97 boatmasters, conducted 31 surveys of small boats, 6 surveys of ice crossings, 6 surveys of beaches and 1 survey of the base for parking of small boats.

Alexander himself says that winning the competition is an incentive to further improve his professional level. He also stressed that this is not only his victory, but also of their entire friendly team, which in 2019year is the leader among the patrol groups of the Republic of Komi in terms of the main performance indicators. All employees of the Center of the State Inspection for Small Vessels of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia in the Komi Republic improve their professional skills every day and really deserve to be recognized at such a high level.

“For me, my work is not just an everyday activity, it’s a calling. ..” – this is Alexander’s professional motto, which he adheres to throughout life.

According to sociologists, financiers, hairdressers, power engineers and crane operators are satisfied with their work in Russia. But the bartenders and peasants are not at all happy with their fate. However, there is no direct relationship between wages and the degree of satisfaction with the profession – b o The possibility of self-realization also plays a large role. According to HR specialists, many construction specialties, including crane operators, have become perhaps the most in demand today. Psychologists say that people who are dissatisfied with their profession are more likely to experience stress and recommend “sufferers” to change jobs or look for an outlet outside the office – in creative activity or in the family.

According to a large-scale survey by VTsIOM, in today’s Russia, financiers, hairdressers and psychologists most often find happiness in the workplace, but bartenders, loaders and janitors are not at all happy with what they have to do.

According to sociologists, financiers in Russia are more than happy about their profession: 75% of the respondents in this area are satisfied with their place and position. In the professional satisfaction rating, hairdressers breathe down the back of the head of financiers – 73% of Russian barbers and barbers are also satisfied with everything. Right behind them are power engineers: 70% of them do not complain about life, and psychologists, among whom they are satisfied with their profession 69%.

According to Doctor59.ru Director of Stroypersonal recruitment agency Mikhail Bleher , building specialties are one of the most demanded today. “We mainly specialize in the recruitment of engineering and technical personnel, but simply by the number of applications from employers, you can judge how much the city needs both crane operators and excavator operators now. Therefore, there is no reason to be surprised that those who work in these specialties are satisfied with their fate,” the specialist believes.

Meanwhile, according to the same survey, among teachers, police officers and managers, the number of dissatisfied exceeds half: 51% of respondents. According to representatives of these professions, the point here is most likely in the constant tension with which this kind of activity is associated.

The list of satisfied respondents who work as radio technicians and radio engineers (17%), bricklayers and storekeepers (14% each), agricultural workers and security guards (13% each), quality control inspectors and cashiers (12% each) closes the rating.

Mostly catering workers (bartenders and waiters), loaders (every fourth) and janitors (24%) are dissatisfied with their fate.

Summarizing the data obtained, sociologists assert that the majority of those who are satisfied with their profession work in business, finance, law, and management. In second place are workers in the fields of science, education, culture and healthcare. The third place is occupied by the sphere of transport, communications, information technology. In the industrial and construction industry, 33% of respondents are satisfied with their work, in the security sector – every fourth. The least number of Russians satisfied with their profession is the service sector and the agricultural sector.

According to psychologists, the statistics were collected in such a way that they reflected the opportunity to realize oneself in one’s field, as well as to express one’s dissatisfaction with the salary.

Thus, these two vectors formed the obtained results.

“Those who have found themselves in the profession, and the work allows them to realize themselves, are satisfied with the chosen field of activity,” comments the editor-in-chief of the journal “Psychology. Perm” Evgeny Koshevarov . “This also applies to crane operators, because this profession is difficult to choose without your personal desire to engage in it.

In matters of dissatisfaction with one’s work, according to the psychologist, another vector played the main role – wages and refusal to take responsibility for one’s place and work. As a result, teachers, carpenters, security guards, and cashiers fell into this category. In the case of cashiers and OTC controllers, strict regulation of activities is added, which excludes the possibility of self-realization. In the event that a person cannot change his profession for some reason, he experiences constant additional stress.

“If it is impossible to change the field of activity, for example, because of financial interest in it, then the family or some extra-work interests should give a person an outlet – the opportunity to express oneself, self-realize, develop creatively. But if a person has an unloved job and an unloved family, then it’s already worth considering whose life he lives, ”says Evgeny Koshevarov.

I have been looking for a new job for 7.5 months. Found. Am I happy? No. Why?

It so happened in my life that, having left my previous job, I was looking for a new one for a very long time. 7.5 months have passed since the announcement of the decision to leave before entering a new place. How I looked for a job and what I took into account when choosing is a separate question. The important thing is that I work in middle management positions in the IT field, so I didn’t rush into any job and chose the best of what was. I must say, in the end, and the only thing. Having worked quite a bit at the moment, I wondered if I had chosen in the end what I wanted? Answer: no! I am not satisfied with everything in my work! What is wrong? What are the reasons for my incomplete satisfaction?

1. Lost sense of significance

It must be said that life forced me to start my career virtually anew. I went to the position of an ordinary project manager, with promises, in case of success, further growth and advancement. So the first thing that hit me was a sense of significance. I do not consider myself a selfish person, however, the feeling of Ego is in everyone. For me, this is precisely a sense of significance, and not pride, although, of course, they are strongly connected. The sense of significance depends on the scale of the tasks being solved. An important component of the scale is whether the tasks being solved affect the execution of the company’s strategy or at least your division. Here my reality faced hard losses. I manage a typical project as part of a large product with dozens of projects going on at the same time.

2. The functionality has narrowed

The second thing that makes me dissatisfied is the functionality. Basically, my functions as a leader have always been the same – to achieve results from people in your linear and matrix subordination. And here I clearly realized that linear subordination is more important for me than matrix subordination, and the project manager has people only in matrix subordination.

3. No independence in managing priorities

Bummer number three. Manage your own priorities. The higher the level of the leader, the greater the ability to manage them. The lower, the greater the dependence on the tasks of the authorities, although we all have a boss. Working at high-level positions, you get a task at the top level, decompose it, then distribute it among people and control it. As a project manager, you mainly receive tasks and implement the will of the project (the will of the boss). Perhaps I am exaggerating, and now they will tell me that the project manager has complete freedom of will, the main thing is to achieve the goal of the project and solve project tasks. Everything is so and not so. I’m only talking about my own difference in feelings between the position of middle-manager and project-manager. Everything is relative.

The second dependency in priority management is timing: the lower the position level, the less flexibility in timing. Of course, at the same time, we mean in a person a complete sense of responsibility for their results, regardless of the level of position.

4. The feeling of freedom has disappeared

The fourth factor. Ease or ease in work. I can already hear your voices – snickering! There is no ease or tension in any work, everywhere you have to work for the result! That’s right, the main thing here is your attitude to it, but flexibility is also needed. When you are a high-level boss, you have a lot of free will, if you want – you do it, if you want – you postpone it. This is clearly less in RP, although flexibility is present.

But is everything as bad as I draw?! And more importantly, how to live harmoniously with this?! Do not fight, do not exist, but live harmoniously! Your inner always determines the outer. The world is what you make it for yourself! The recipes are:

  • To feel your importance, achieve your goals . Get the results you want at work. And people will respect you! And through respect you gain significance! Of course, ideally, the feeling of significance should be completely removed, because this is just one of the manifestations of your ego. You shouldn’t depend on someone else’s judgment, you shouldn’t judge others, and you shouldn’t even judge yourself. Analyze – yes, but do not evaluate! But this is the highest Zen, the path to it is a separate topic for conversation. So, just do it, without thinking, good or bad, just do it! And the results will come. And with them respect and a sense of significance.
  • Functionality . You are not a sewer operator, is this good news? Of course, joyful! You are not a janitor! Also good! Yes, you are an employee and must do what you are told. So do it with interest! Show sincere interest in everything you want! Be interested, understand, understand! And the functionality will not be very important to you. You will see your development, your progress in learning something new, in the knowledge gained. And also in the new skills you get! And from the feeling of progress inside you there is also an interest in work, which allows you to treat your functions as something that is simply given to you, as your current reality, and enjoy it. Rejoice in what you have been given! Regret for what you don’t have is a dead end that only leads to your mental suffering. Do you want to be happy? Of course you do! So treat what is given to you with interest, rejoice and enjoy. And if a task is not interesting, just do it and move on to the next one. Without hesitation!
  • Managing your own priorities and tasks . The recipe is similar. Thank the universe for everything that happens! The universe has given you the opportunity to meet new people, get acquainted! You got the opportunity to study MS Project in detail, so use it! These are opportunities that you have the right to use for yourself in the future. This is your asset! Accept any variant of events that occurs. Even if the events seem unfavorable to you, this is your lesson. It is difficult to learn through positivity, sometimes you need a kick in the ass to learn a lesson. And it’s not your boss who actually asks you, but you yourself: did I do what I need in this life or just flush it down the toilet? The choice is yours!
  • Light and relaxed . I will disappoint you, of course, lightness and ease are a myth! External lightness and ease! No one just pays money for nothing! But your inner lightness and ease is a reality that you yourself can form for yourself or not. Classic cocktail recipe: Treat work like play. Play it, don’t perform it. Not in the sense of fictitious results, but in the sense of the approach. Are you interested in winning the game? Are you passionate? Act like in a game, be interested, get carried away and win. And even if you temporarily lose, it’s just a game. And there is no disaster! There is, of course, a recipe for professionals, but a difficult one for a few. Be an observer. Not in the sense of doing nothing, and not associating yourself with failures and with success too! What is an observer? Imagine you are driving in a traffic jam, long, dreary, everything irritates, infuriates. Did you feel? And now you’re flying a plane over a traffic jam, and it seems to you distant, peaceful and insignificant. The same event, but a completely different attitude towards it. Similarly: there is a role that you play at work, and there is you who looks at this game, at the performance of yourself in this role, at other characters from the outside. You are simply passionate as a spectator, regardless of the outcome of the game.

Of course, there may be more factors that do not suit you in your work, they may be completely different. I analyzed only my condition, only my factors, and I hope you will find useful feedback on them and recipes on how to work with them. There are many positive aspects in my work: I am satisfied with the money I receive, I got what I wanted; a sane, reasonable boss who has a lot to learn from; the opportunity to build a career; Energetic young team with whom it is pleasant to communicate; cool office and more. I am happy with what I have, I live in the present, I hope for the best that a career will develop in a new place, money will grow, I will feel my own significance . .. At the same time, I am ready for the fact that the outcome of the game can be anything, I always have the right to change it or play.

Be happy with what you have, strive for the best, but always be prepared for any eventuality, accept it with gratitude!
