Working in Mexico | Expat Arrivals

Mexico’s coastal communities are a haven for expat pensioners living out their golden years among its tropical beaches, but the country’s large cities are a stomping ground for many young working expats.
Mexico City has cultivated lucrative industries that are pulling in young and industrious entrepreneurs and professionals. Over the years, the Mexican industry has been integrated into the economies of the US and Canada and has become a common branch location for large international companies.
Expats working in Mexico will find themselves in a colourful and fast-paced business environment that places high value on interpersonal relationships.
Job market in Mexico
Thanks to cheaper manufacturing and labour costs, many companies that were established in the US have moved and expanded to Mexico. These industries often source management and professionals from other countries, particularly for the high-paying occupations of manufacturing-plant managers and IT managers.
There are job opportunities in Mexico’s finance, healthcare, telecommunications, tourism and hospitality industries. English teachers at local private schools and learning centres, needing at least a TEFL certificate, also make up much of the expat workforce in Mexico.
Alternatively, entrepreneurs may set up their own business or find freelance opportunities. There are prospects in IT and consulting services that can be taken advantage of. Being self-employed and running a business can be risky, and we recommend entrepreneurs do their research and seek the guidance of a lawyer or professional with specific knowledge in their field.
Many foreigners are interested in volunteering or finding an internship in Mexico. Volunteering in social, community or environmental projects is a common way of experiencing life in this North American country. This type of work has the bonus of bypassing some complicated work permit paperwork processes for stays shorter than six months, but options are largely unpaid and are done more for the experience than a sustainable work option.
Finding a job in Mexico
Unemployment in Mexico is high and finding work can be challenging. Expats looking for employment in Mexico often end up accepting salaries that are comparatively lower than those in other countries, but the cost of living is also lower too, so this must be considered.
Securing employment before the move is helpful as the hiring company can arrange visas and work permits. Companies must prove that hired expats are not taking jobs that Mexican workers would be able to do. The process seems complicated but the hiring company undertakes much of the paperwork.
Possessing recognised qualifications and being able to speak Spanish are crucial for expats looking for employment in Mexico, and embassies should be contacted to make sure that the qualifications are officially recognised in Mexico.
The best places to look for jobs are Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Juárez and León. Online job listings are incredibly helpful. These include Glassdoor, LinkedIn and CompuTrabajo. Recruitment agencies and relocation companies may be able to provide additional support.
Work culture in Mexico
Mexico offers a dynamic business environment, but expats will need to familiarise themselves with the cultural nuances of the working world.
Business in Mexico is largely built around personal relationships, and networking is central to successful interactions. It’s also important to learn Spanish. Although most executives within large cities will likely be able to speak English, learning the local language will go a long way to integrating into the work environment.
Business hours in Mexico are long: 8am or 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. There is often a two-hour siesta between 2pm and 4pm. Offices in the tourism industry are usually open on Saturdays as well.

Before looking for a job in Mexico, think about a residence permit – Residence permit in Mexico
Comments 2
When it comes to moving to Mexico, the first question we are most often asked is how to find a job and what professions are in demand . But the realities of Mexico are such that this question should be the second. The first question should be how to legally stay in Mexico. For one simple reason: you must be in great demand so that the Mexican employer immediately agrees to issue you an invitation to work, and without such permission you will not be able to legally find a job and legally stay in the country. It is even more impossible to simply come, open your own business and legalize on this basis.
In Mexico it is (almost) impossible to find a job remotely unless you have exceptional skills. It is equally difficult to find a job without knowing Spanish, although sometimes English will do. Most often they did this: they came as tourists, learned the language, looked for work, and then thought about how to stay. This scheme worked as long as Mexico allowed tourists to stay in the country for 180 days. Then it was possible to leave for any nearest country, re-enter and get another 180 days. While you were in Mexico, you could look around, find a job, not necessarily legal, and keep thinking about how to stay in the country without leaving. In the end, it was possible to find an employer who would agree to issue you an invitation to work as a foreigner through the migration service. Then you still had to leave to get a work visa at the nearest consulate of Mexico, and upon arrival you received a residence permit and a work permit.
Some, while in Mexico as a tourist, managed to marry a Mexican or give birth to a child, which also gave them the unconditional right to obtain a residence permit. True, a work permit for him had to be requested separately from the migration service, but this is not difficult.
Now everything has changed. 180 days upon entry is no longer given by default, and even more often they are not given than they are. No one knows how long the passport control officer will let you stay in Mexico. It can be two weeks or two months, but increasingly less than 80 days. Do you think this time will be enough for you to find an employer who will give you a job offer? Not all employers make such an invitation, they simply do not want to get involved in paperwork.
In addition, there is no guarantee that on re-entry you will not receive even fewer days than on the previous entry, and that you will not be allowed into the country at all. It seems that after the New Year, the attention of the migration service to those who make frequent movements across the border will increase even more.
Mexico is not the USA, the minimum wage is not enough to live here. Worse if you don’t know Spanish. Most often, you will be able to work only for yourself, offering services to the Russian-speaking diaspora. Incomes will be small and unstable, and without a cash cushion or outside income brought with you, you will feel cramped. It is better if you know Spanish or English. Upon arrival, it will be easier to find a job, but it will be illegal and low-paid work. However, sometimes you can make good money from tips.
After the end of your authorized period of stay, you become illegal. Previously, you could not worry about this much, now you can’t. Previously, it was possible to extend the period of stay up to 180 days, now it is not possible. Previously, it was possible to buy a fake migration form, now it makes no sense. Now an illegal immigrant can be detained and deported. You will not be able to use airplanes and intercity buses, and you will have to bypass some places in the city.
Sometimes it happens that travel companies hire Russian-speaking visitors, and then issue them an invitation to work. It happens, but rarely. You still need to know at least some language and you need to have experience in tourism. If this job pays well, they will prefer to take someone who already has papers in Mexico. However, in order to gain a foothold in Mexico, any offer of legal work will do.
What did we want to say with this publication? You will have a limited amount of time to find an employer in Mexico who is willing to issue you a job offer. Even having found it, you are unlikely to have time to wait for an invitation issued by the migration service before the end of your period of permitted stay in Mexico. This process can take up to 4 months. Traveling to Mexico’s neighboring country to obtain a work visa at a Mexican consulate also incurs certain costs. Perhaps you should consider all the options for obtaining a residence permit in Mexico before you arrive?
Read this publication on our website. It will help you understand what a Mexican work visa is. A work visa is one of the easiest and most popular options to become a resident of Mexico and stay here to live. If you properly organize the process of obtaining it…

Therefore, it is quite difficult or not at all realistic to break into this area.

Often, foreign diplomas and certificates need a recognition procedure. Another important factor is the degree of foreign language proficiency. The official language of Mexico, which is spoken by more than 90% of local residents, is Spanish. For successful employment, at least you need to speak English at an advanced level.
Procedure for labor migration to Mexico
For legal employment in Mexico, foreigners must first find an employer and obtain a work visa that allows them to carry out professional activities in Mexican territory. The document is issued by the diplomatic office of Mexico in the country of the labor migrant. Issues related to the issuance of work permits, and, accordingly, work visas, are supervised by National Institute of Immigration of Mexico ( Instituto Nacional de Migración , hereinafter – NIIM).
Citizens of many countries of the world, in particular the European Union, are allowed to visit Mexico for tourism or business purposes for a period of to 6 months without first obtaining a visa. It is enough to fill out a special immigration form upon arrival – Forma Migratoria Múltiple . For holders of Russian or Ukrainian passports, this option of visiting Mexico is not available.
However, for long-term employment in a Mexican company ( more than 6 months ) all foreigners without exception need to obtain a temporary resident visa with the right to work ( Visa de Residente Temporal ). To do this, a Mexican employer applies to NIIM with an application for hiring a foreign specialist. If a positive decision is made, the applicant has 15 days to apply to the Consulate of Mexico for a work visa.
