“We won’t take you because you are a man.” What is it like to work as a psychologist in a kindergarten when you are a guy and you are 27 years old
Pavel Shilko-Shablovsky graduated from the Gomel University, received a degree in psychology, worked for two years at school, and then got a job in a kindergarten. Of course, not on the first try – “we do not take men.”
pavel
– After university, I worked as a school psychologist in the city of Rechitsa. Then I returned to Gomel, but I no longer wanted to go to school. I purposefully looked for a job in a kindergarten: I submitted a resume to three places, but I was refused everywhere. They talked about bad conditions – as if they were hinting, they say, it’s better not to go to them.
And once they said directly: “We won’t take you, because you are a man.” I had to do some part-time jobs that were not related to psychology, but I quickly realized that I was unlikely to find myself in something else. The fourth attempt to get into the garden was successful. They hired me right on the day of the interview.
How my working day works
As a rule, my working day looks like this: the first hour of work I plan what I will do all day; I go around the groups where there are children from problem families (if the children were not brought to the kindergarten, then I need to call my parents and find out what happened), I communicate with the authorities. Classes start at 9 o’clock. One lesson can last from 20 to 30 minutes, sometimes stretching for an hour. Until 12 days I have active work. After that, I can go to dysfunctional families that are registered, communicate with educators or deal with documents.
On my very first day at work, I was 10 minutes late. I was warmly welcomed and told not to do it again. Immediately loaded with bundles of documents for study.
That day I felt quite strange, as if I went back 20 years : this smell of food from the canteen – memories stirred in my memory.
A few days later I started working with children. I was warned about the first group lesson literally two minutes before the start, and I rushed around the office in a panic – I came up with several games on the go.
It was on that day that I realized how I could further structure my studies. I analyzed what went well for me and what did not. I saw in which places the energy of the children went through the roof, and in which they were distracted and indulged. In any game, even for children, there is a developing effect. The only question is how big it is. Thinking, memory, speech and imagination are involved here. Every game touches on this in some way.
What kind of relationship do I have with colleagues in kindergarten
There are a sufficient number of caregivers with whom you feel comfortable. But with some, a distance is felt: as if it is difficult to accept that a man works as a psychologist.
Some colleagues come to me with their life difficulties. They may even bring their children to me to work with them. Still, for them, I am the only familiar and accessible psychologist to whom they can turn. They think that I will now give them some correct answer – and everything will change.
Our collaboration also has limits: I can’t have a full therapy session with them, but I can give advice. The way I personally see their problem. And often my answers meet a wall of misunderstanding. But this is not really a consultation format, but just advice. Sometimes, if I can’t answer briefly, I suggest talking about the problem in the allotted time.
I can’t say that I do therapy with children
My work is developing and corrective classes, in which art therapy plays an important role. I conduct both group classes and individual (there are fewer of them). The main request from educators is the development of thinking, memory and attention in older children who find this difficult. As if we are smoothly preparing them for school. The ability to read and write is not the most important thing. Now many children already know how to do this before school, and our task is to teach them other skills.
I’m interested in doing little research, comparing groups and seeing which one the kids are more ready for. But this is interesting only to me – it is not spelled out in any official plans. True, I had a plan that a previous psychologist wrote at the beginning of the year, but I did not always use it. I myself figure out what we will do, especially since the leadership has given me complete freedom.
I work only with older groups, because they show the result more. They can reflect and give feedback. They say what they like and what they don’t. I sometimes come to the kids just to watch them.
Sometimes educators come up and address something like this: “Vasya is quite aggressive, do something with him.” For example, a boy was brought to me, with whom we worked for a long time, he had difficulty in expressing aggression. At the same time, he could immediately say “no” if he did not like something. I had a hard time with him.
We worked to endure his anger – in a safe environment, of course. He came to my office, and I allowed him to do whatever he liked with the big teddy bear. He beat him, threw him.
I also asked him to show anger on his face and intensify it very much: so that everything shrinks and his teeth show, so that his eyebrows frown. He understood how to express it, and did everything without problems. It was easy for him, he liked it.
I see my potential in working with children
To be honest, I was apprehensive about the kindergarten, but this revealed my interest and energy. I can’t say that I like everything, but some moments are very. Working with children, you learn a lot about yourself. I always thought that I was kind of at a distance with the kids. There are children who stuck to me, and at first it was a little scary: if I get very immersed in work, then I become the same six-year-old child and the children seem to read this and address me as “you”. We seem to be in the same stream and there are no boundaries.
Children simply call me a psychologist, uncle, Vladimirovich or Pavel Vladimirovich. And that’s how I introduced myself – Pavel Vladimirovich. It is difficult for children to pronounce the name and patronymic, so sometimes they call me simply Vladimirovich. I also succumbed to this kindergarten style of calling employees only by their patronymics. For me, it was crazy at first.
Working with children without working with their parents is ineffective – and this is also a problem if they do not support this work themselves, listen to my recommendations and generally listen to me. After all, I can’t always understand, especially if the parents do not make contact, what is the situation in the family, how the parents get along with the child and with each other.
All parents write their consent for their children to have a psychologist
Until now, many parents ask with incomprehension: “Why does our child need a psychologist? We are normal, what’s the matter, why work with us and our children?” Therefore, consent is first of all necessary so that I can protect myself from angry parents who suddenly find out that a psychologist was working with their child.
During the diagnostics with the same drawing, I sometimes ask the child to draw his family. And here questions about the family will inevitably arise, because I ask the child to tell in detail about each character in the picture: what kind of character is this, what does he do in the picture, what is his role there.
It is often difficult to diagnose a dysfunctional family situation. A drawing can not only show this, but give rise to doubts in us. I can go to the caregiver and get more information about the parents. Sometimes I meet with my parents, but it was only a few times.
My duties include not only psychological work with children
I would even say that it is often secondary. Most of the time is occupied by paperwork and social work with dysfunctional families that are registered. There are several such families in the kindergarten, but they are very problematic. And they are the main layer of the work of a psychologist in the garden.
There is no separate vacancy for “social teacher” and, it seems, never was. I do not know why this is so, although this issue has been actively discussed lately: one psychologist cannot always cope with so much work. And often it is for this reason that psychologists leave gardens.
A family can be registered for several reasons. The most common is drinking parents, but there are other situations. For example, a family may have a very large debt for utilities or poor sanitation in the house.
One of the children in the family committed an offense, or parents force their children to beg and engage in prostitution – but the latter criteria have not been met in my practice, they are extremely rare. When communicating, such parents do not always meet halfway. Sometimes they really do not understand how it can end.
In theory, we should not warn the family about the test, especially the problematic one. We can do this at any time. But usually we still call in advance, because it turns out to be more expensive for ourselves.
