Working in Bali – Guide

The multi-faceted island of Bali offers many opportunities for those who wish to move from tourist to expatriate status. But what about employment for foreigners? While the promise of living and working in a paradise-like setting is tempting, it is important to understand that finding a job in Indonesia requires patience and perseverance, not to mention a strong CV. Immigration laws were tightened during the pre-pandemic years, but the government is expected to loosen the legislation again to help the economy recover.

If you wish to work in Bali, you will be required to have a long-term visa to stay in Indonesia. People who work without permission or with only a tourist visa risk severe penalties ranging from jail to deportation and/or corporal punishment. It is important to be informed about the administrative procedure that you will need to undertake in order to be allowed to work in Indonesia. There are several types of visas that allow you to seek employment and earn a salary in Indonesia, depending on how long you want to stay, the type of work you will be doing and your professional status.

After being granted long-term residency in Indonesia, you will be able to apply for your right to work. More specifically, in order to be eligible to work in Bali, you must first obtain a work visa or KITAS (Kartu Tanda Tinggal Sementara), which is a temporary residence permit for Indonesia, that requires sponsorship either from a foreign-owned company (PMA), or an Indonesian limited liability company (PT) or from the representative office of a foreign company. The minimum validity of a KITAS is six months and the maximum is 12 months. The administrative fee is approximately USD 1,200 per application.

Also, note that not all Indonesian limited liability companies are allowed to sponsor a foreign worker. To reverse this, the company must meet specific financial requirements.

You should be aware that Indonesia is a developing country and is constantly adjusting its bureaucracy. For example, with the current government taking the fight against corruption very seriously, even the smallest administrative hiccup can cause a huge delay in any process. So make sure that all your papers and identification documents are valid and in order.

Good to know

The KITAS (right of residence) from a marriage with an Indonesian spouse does not confer the right to work in Bali, the marriage KITAS and work KITAS being two separate documents. However, a marriage KITAS readily gives you the right to apply for a work permit. As mentioned, it is mandatory to apply for a work permit in order to work in Bali, even if it may seem a rather tedious and expensive process.

In Bali, where many tourists flock, the immigration department is always vigilant about illegal workers. Immigration officers often raid companies to check the validity of the work visa of their foreign employees. Failure to do so results in heavy fines for the company and deportation for the expatriate.

Consequently, fewer and fewer companies are willing to sponsor foreigners unless the person has crucial skills that no Indonesian can produce. The sponsorship process is not only expensive but can also put the company at risk if something goes wrong.

Looking for a job in Bali

It is highly recommended to first find a job in Bali before moving in. It is worth mentioning that a job offer open to expatriates in traditional media such as newspapers, radio or television is a very rare commodity. However, be aware that even if you do come across an ad, the recruitment process can take several months.

That is why most expatriates in Bali prefer to browse through specialized online job boards. For example, you can check our list of available jobs in Bali. Other websites that post jobs for English-speaking professionals include Glassdoor, JobStreet, LinkedIn, oneworld 365 and concordservices, to name a few.

If you do not have time to do your job search yourself or if you feel lost in the administrative paperwork required beforehand, you can choose to hire an immigration agent. They will take care of all the paperwork for you and should generally be able to provide you with a list of potential jobs that match your professional skills, salary expectations and requirements.

Sectors that are recruiting in Bali

Around 80% of Bali’s economy is based on tourism. The island has one of the highest densities of spas in the world (about 1,200), which makes it easier for foreigners to find jobs in this sector, usually in high-level positions (hotel management, executive chefs, etc.). Several agencies offer such services in Bali, such as letsmoveindonesia.com or permitindo.com. This will cost you more, of course, but you will save yourself a lot of administrative hassle compared to those who do it themselves.

You can also work as an English teacher without necessarily stepping on the toes of local teachers. Applicants for this type of job are welcome in kindergartens, high schools and universities. Salaries can vary depending on the qualifications of the job seeker and the hiring institution. For example, an international school will pay more than a foreign language center.

Bali is undoubtedly one of the best expatriation destinations to teach yoga, scuba diving and surfing, especially if you have the necessary qualifications and skills. Ubud, the spiritual wellness capital of Bali, is the ideal place to be an instructor, while Nusa Lembongan and its wild beaches are perfect for surfing professionals. With Bali being considered the surfing capital of the world, there are many surfcamps across the island. These establishments offer room and board to tourists who want to learn to surf, as well as lessons for different levels and transportation to the many local surf spots.

If you’re a model, photographer, musician or dancer, there are also plenty of opportunities thanks to the many events, festivals, films and commercials organized and filmed locally. Live entertainment, discos, bars and nightclubs also abound in Bali, feeding the need for DJs and musicians. Otherwise, bartenders, restaurant and bar managers, and waiters are among the most required professionals in Bali.

Some of the most popular jobs for foreigners in Bali are:

  • scuba diving instructor
  • foreign language teachers
  • various restaurant and hotel jobs
  • construction managers
  • yoga instructor
  • various jobs in the art sector
  • entrepreneurship (with start-up founders).

Important:

As a job applicant, always ensure that your potential employer applies for the work visa that which you are qualified for.

The fastest and safest way to obtain a work visa is to start your own business in Bali, which allows you to sponsor your work visa. Many expats choose this route by opening a restaurant or an import-export business. In return, be prepared to invest a lot of time and money. If possible, enter a local partnership or get help from the Balinese people, as this should make things much easier, especially in terms of administrative tasks. However, be sure to partner up or use people you trust.

If you are a digital nomad, there comes the good news. Bali is also riding the new technology and start-up wave. As a result, many coworking spaces have sprung up there and offer good service. However, many of these spaces have closed their doors following the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic in Indonesia. It’s best to check online before you go looking for a space that will suit you.

However, there are some conditions attached to being a digital nomad in Indonesia. For example, you will not be allowed to work for local companies or receive commissions from companies related to Indonesia. Your clients must be from other countries and have no interest or investment in Bali. That’s why only freelancers who have a good international network before emigrating and are already well established financially can live well in Bali. If you want to start from Bali, make sure you secure a solid client base that will provide you with a regular and decent income before you start.

How to find a job in Bali?

Bali is a relatively small destination, perfect for networking and taking action quickly. Be active by registering on expat job boards, join communities and forums specific to your field on social networks, such as Facebook or LinkedIn. Remember to read our article on Bali’s networking etiquette. Balinese customs and traditions are sometimes very particular, and you might offend some people without meaning to if you are not familiar with some local practices.

In addition, reach out to festival and event organizers and start making contacts in your chosen industry. For example, if you are a yoga teacher, go to the Bali Spirit Festival and attend the event, or email the organizers to learn more about the local yoga scene.

Once on the island, do not hesitate to submit your CV directly to companies or upload it to job websites in Bali.

Also, note that many international hotel chains tend to hire internally. If you are in the industry and work for a chain that has business in Bali, why not request an in-house transfer? Many expatriates in Bali work for international chains such as Club Med, Radisson Blu, Intercontinental and others, Most of them have applied for a transfer to work for a few years on the island of the Gods.

It needs to be stressed out that the tourism sector has been strongly impacted by the economic crisis related to Covid-19. But since the end of 2021, things have kept improving. For example, as of March 7, 2022, sanitary measures have been eased out, and new arrivals are no longer required to undergo quarantine before being allowed to travel to the island, provided that their vaccinations are up to date and that they undergo regular tests. While the COVID crisis had triggered a 9.5% drop in tourist arrivals to the country between 2019 and 2021, Indonesia is pushing hard to welcome 3.6 million targeted foreign tourists by 2022.

If you are a teacher, contact international schools in Bali. And if you’re interested in teaching English as a foreign language, sign up on teaching forums such as Dave’s ESL Cafe, or apply to language schools such as English First.

Jobs for Russians in Indonesia (popular jobs and reviews)

We live in a world of open opportunities. What seemed like a fantasy to past generations is turning into reality with us. The indelible impression of visiting Indonesia makes me think: what if working in Bali is my future? After thinking about it once, many take the next step.

Advertising

How to find a job in the country

It happens that a job finds a traveler by itself: assistance in translation for tourist groups, consultations, acquaintance with those involved in the selection of personnel. After all, the islanders are extremely sociable and friendly, open to everything new, to cooperation.

But more often than not, finding jobs in Bali takes effort. Monitoring of professional sites and communities, appeals to personnel organizations, even inquiries to institutions and institutions of Indonesia that interest you will help you find a job and realize yourself, earning a decent life in Bali.

Recruitment agencies

What do recruiters offer to our citizens who want to resettle on the islands? First of all, the applicant will be advised that work in Indonesia for Russians implies a high expert level of knowledge and skills necessary in the country, including language skills. You can’t find a decent place without confident English.

As a rule, Russians are offered jobs in the following areas:

  • medicine;
  • tourism;
  • computer technology;
  • biochemistry;
  • management;
  • less often – goods and services.

Let’s make a reservation right away: Russians cannot get legally unskilled labor with an official position here. Foreigners are glad to see as valuable workers where their competent staff is only growing up.

If the proposed places are interesting, then by filling out the questionnaire, providing copies of documents and making an advance payment (or agreeing to a one-time deduction from the first salary to the agency), the potential employee signs an agreement and waits for a call. This process does not take more than a month.

Websites

Advertising

There are chances to save money, not pay anyone and find a job on your own. Browsing web pages with ads can give the desired result. A number of Russian forums allow you to get settled among our emigrants on the island – personal assistants, nannies, nurses in Russian families are sometimes in great demand. However, there are few such vacancies and not all of them are well paid. Rather, it is a chance to live free in the tropics.

Professional job boards for the query “who can work in Bali” give at least a hundred vacancies. This includes construction, tourism, entertainment, and the modeling business. The last two are especially relevant for girls, so it is recommended to evaluate these vacancies carefully and carefully.

Other

Highly competitive job seekers can get jobs by contacting the Russian embassy or the Indonesian authorities. These are prestigious and paid places, but vacancies are rare and competition is high.

In order to get a job by applying directly to an institution, a company, the applicant must meet a number of requirements of local laws. An applicant with a higher education, five years of experience in the specialty, who speaks English (or French, German) will be in demand.

It is advisable to start learning Indonesian.

Demanded and highly paid professions in 2021

In Indonesia, service personnel do not always speak Russian. Therefore, there is a demand for interpreters accompanying groups of tourists from the Russian Federation. For university students, vacationers or even freelancers who have settled on the island, working as a guide in Bali is suitable as a main or additional job.

Professions in which our specialists are in demand are:

  • programmer;
  • designer;
  • medical personnel;
  • coach;
  • teacher;
  • biologist.

Due to the fact that Internet is inexpensive here, remote work in Bali is another option to lead a comfortable life in this beautiful and comfortable place. Employees of the advertising industry, IT companies, photographers, authors, animation creators and video operators are the layer of freelance artists that are always on the islands. Their employers, as a rule, are not residents of Indonesia and belong to companies in the United States, Britain, and other European powers.

Salary

This island nation belongs to the group of developing countries. Growth rates are quite high, although the Singapore economic miracle is far away. Therefore, salaries in Indonesia in 2021 are uneven: they range from $150 to $3,000 depending on the field of employment.

Average salary in 2021

The minimum rate for Jakarta, the capital of the country, is IDR 3,200,000, or about $240 at the exchange rate at the beginning of last year. In a number of peripheral areas, locals work for 93-95$. As a rule, these are residents of villages similar to slums, who eat mainly rice with vegetables or noodles.

The maximum earnings recorded in the state this year amounted to $6977.14. As for statistics, the average salary in Bali is $ 1,155 or 16,599,080 rupees – this is received by pharmacists, accountants, teachers, business analysts, engineers.

Legal employment

To work in the territory of this state officially – you need to open a work visa or KITAS with index 312 – an analogue of a residence permit with the right to work. Without this, the activity is considered illegal and may result in a fine. Despite the fact that many of our compatriots work here without the relevant documents, it is not recommended to experiment.

Employment Permit

An Indonesian company must have a permit for the employment of foreign personnel issued by the Ministry of Labor Reserves of the state. Based on it, the General Directorate of Immigration in Jakarta gives the go-ahead for a work visa applicant (IMTA or KITAS). It is extremely difficult to obtain such permission on your own.

Each working foreigner costs the company an additional tax of $100 per month. In addition, a visa will cost $1,200, a permit for 6 months will cost $115, and a permit for a year will cost $150.

Required documents

The list of papers, without which one cannot officially get settled on any of the many islands of Indonesia, includes:

  1. Passport with a photocopy of all its pages.
  2. Annual insurance policy.
  3. CV in English or Indonesian.
  4. Resume with links to recent jobs and experience gained.
  5. Certified copies of diplomas and certificates of education, allowing you to apply for the desired position.
  6. 18 color photographs on a red background:
  • 16 – 4×6 cm;
  • 5 – 2×3 cm;
  • 4 – 3×4 cm.

All listed papers are duplicated in English and notarized.

Employment contract

To conclude a contract, a similar package of documents is prepared by a potential employer. Both copies are sent for consideration to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On the basis of all permits, a contract or an employment contract is formed.

Before signing a standard agreement with a company, we recommend that you carefully study it in order to assess the obligations of the parties and responsibilities, without being surprised later on by fines or dismissal by decision of the management. When drawing up an individual contract, it is also better to contact lawyers.

How to start a business in the country

The Indonesian authorities do not impose strict financial requirements for foreign enterprises. You can open a business here with any starting capital, but 25% of it must be deposited into the account on the day the company is founded. For non-residents of the country, a partner from among the citizens is needed, who will receive control of the controlling stake.

It is possible to register a business for Russians in Bali under the same conditions as for citizens of other countries. Registration permission can be obtained from the Indonesia Capital Investment Coordination Council.

The would-be entrepreneur acts like this:

  1. Submits a completed standard form.
  2. Draws up constituent documents with a notary.
  3. Receives permission to register his company name, having previously checked it for uniqueness and loyalty in relation to insulting the feelings and rights of others.
  4. Pays a State Treasury (PNBP) fee of IDR 200,000.
  5. Applies to the Ministry of Labor and Human Resources for permission to form a company.

It is accompanied by bank account opening information, copies of the receipt for payment of fees and 25% of the authorized funds, tax registration number (NPWP), certificate of receipt of the legal address of the company.

Treatments last up to two months. The application must be submitted within 60 days from the date of approval of the company’s constituent documents.

Punishment for illegal work

Penalties for the developing Indonesian society are the same type of replenishment of the state budget as taxes. Therefore, visitors are carefully monitored here. Those who violated the visa regime – pay 300,000 IDR for each day of delay.

Punishment for non-compliance with labor legalization requirements under Indonesian law is $2,700. Any manipulation of documents, whether it is a falsification of a work permit or a fictitious visa, entails penalties in the amount of up to 500,000,000 IDR.

For these non-criminal offenses, if state sanctions are not paid, the perpetrator faces a five-year prison term.

Deportation

Advertisement

Regardless of whether the violator served the prescribed period or paid the full amount of the administrative penalty, he will be deported from the country at his own expense. Entry restrictions are then imposed for 2 years.

The main trouble is that this data is not updated automatically. That is, even if two years have already passed, and the official has not manually entered information about the removal of restrictive sanctions from the former violator, it will be impossible to enter the country.

Reviews

The Russians who worked in Bali, as is often the case with foreigners, are divided into two camps. Some are convinced that it is worth living and working here, others are sure that Bali can offer nothing but a pleasant climate and good-natured natives. Here are just a few opinions:

“I came to rest. Liked. Then he worked as a dive instructor. There are many foreigners, knowledge of English was very useful. It worked out great until one of the locals snitched. I had to pay a fine. I won’t go again – it’s simply unprofitable to register legally.

“This is a great experience for both work and communication. There are not enough good doctors in clinics. I advise young people not to yawn, gain experience, learn English. Having five years of work experience, a young specialist can easily get a job there in a prestigious clinic. Excellent conditions and high salary. Well, the place of residence, you understand, is paradise.

“I worked as a nanny in a Russian family. The agency did the paperwork. The child was caught with character – it’s good that she left. Even nature was not happy. But, I think, if you could find an obedient and good-natured baby, even with a low salary, it’s worth going.

“I came on a tour after graduating from the university to have a rest. In parallel, she worked as a guide-translator for our and foreign groups. I left for a month and moved in again – all summer long. I liked it very much – the ticket paid off, I arranged pocket expenses for myself. But for permanent residence, you need to look for a cool job, more than 2 thousand dollars. Otherwise, it makes no sense.”

Remote work in Bali: how a front-end developer lives

Begmuhommet, front-end developer at Neti. Stack: Typescript, React.js, Mobx, Material UI. Originally from Turkmenistan, recently moved from Turkey to Indonesia. Likes to learn new technologies and write code. He told how he works remotely, why it is more comfortable not to go to the office, and why he changed Istanbul to Bali.

1. How I ended up in Turkey

2. Went to the ocean

3. Got a job at Neti to work remotely

4. What my day looks like remotely

How I ended up in Turkey

I come from Turkmenistan, studied there 10 classes, then served in the army and went to Turkey to study, where he lived for 7 years, including the time of study. He entered the university as an electronic engineer, graduated in 2019 and stayed to live and work in Istanbul. After studying, he first worked as a freelancer for 1.5 years, and then got a job in an office in a software development company.

I liked living in Turkey: it is a very developed country with good internet, huge opportunities and excellent universities. But for 7 years I was tired of living in one place and I wanted to change it.

Left for the ocean

One of the reasons why I left Turkey was the desire to learn English: without this language it is impossible for a developer to grow professionally. In Turkey, I knew Turkish as a native language, but I didn’t have to use English in colloquial speech there. I understood: I would not leave my comfort zone and change my environment – I would not force myself to learn the language. It was necessary to urgently change the country.

I chose Indonesia as my new location. A friend called me to come and I caught fire: the islands are right in the ocean, and it’s also very warm and beautiful here.

I planned my trip for half a year, because of the pandemic it became more difficult to leave. It was necessary to get vaccinated, pass tests for COVID-19, apply for a visa, buy tickets, insure life and find housing in order to indicate the address in the documents for the visa.

This is how a visa to Indonesia looks like

I needed about 2 thousand dollars for a visa, insurance, housing and a plane. A ticket costs from $500, and a visa is about $400. You need to take a PCR test when you get a visa – just before leaving.

To get a visa, you need to find a so-called sponsor – a citizen or a company that will vouch for you. That is, they guarantee that you will stay in the country only for the period allowed by the visa and that you have money for accommodation and a return ticket.

A special agency can act as a guarantor. I contacted them and they helped me complete the necessary paperwork.

I travel a lot in Indonesia – today I’m in Bali and tomorrow on another island. Therefore, of the things with me, only a computer and summer clothes. It all fits in two backpacks, and it is much more convenient to move around.

Daily spending is now cheaper than in Turkey due to the exchange rate difference. Of the minuses – it is very hot without air conditioning and few people speak English well, but at the same time everyone is very hospitable and friendly, always ready to help.

Got a job at Neti to work remotely

I prefer working in a company to freelancing. In commercial development, clear tasks are set, you can always clarify the input from the designer or analyst and quickly resolve the issue. There is no such thing in freelancing: if the customer does not know something, then the problem may turn out to be unsolvable and slow down the work.

The next stage of my life was working in commercial development at a distance, including I worked for about four months in a startup of three developers and one project manager. I liked building my own work schedule and wanted to find a job in a company with similar conditions.

A few months ago, Neti made me an offer. A friend recommended me to go there. He considered that my experience and skills would be suitable for the job and described the conditions. I considered many options, but the priority was offers of remote work – I was already used to this format and could not return to the office. It suits me better when I can control my time myself, for example, schedule an English lesson at a convenient time. And remote work allows me to focus more on work – I’m alone at home and nothing bothers me, and there is much more noise and distractions in the office.

Neti offered just a remote format – all projects are divided into tasks and lead to Jira – this is understandable and convenient work planning. I became interested and allowed to transfer my contact to an HR specialist.

A few days later I received a call asking for a technical interview. During the interview, they asked about synchronous Javascript, React and MobX frameworks. They also gave me a test task – I had to make a small website on React. I made it in 2 days and they told me that they were ready to cooperate with me.

At first I was engaged in an educational project – I created a website for learning the Tatar language, then they began to entrust me with larger projects. For example, now I am doing a website project on the verses of the Holy Scriptures for the Jews – Tanakh. On the site you can read books and save poems, see what your friends are saving, and soon you will be able to discuss what has been written with them. That is, it is such a thematic site with elements of a social network.

What my day looks like remotely

I usually work from morning to evening and study English at the end of the day. It’s more convenient for me because I like to focus on one thing so that no one interferes.

My workplace at home

The team leader sets the number of hours for each task, he also distributes tasks in the team. I see the assigned tasks in Jira – this is convenient for me, since I understand the priority and the amount of time allotted for them. If I do not have time to turn in the task on time, I can write to the manager and discuss it. And if I have time, I give the code for review and move on to the next project.

In order to focus on work and be less distracted, I prepare my meals for the whole day in the morning.
