Japan Foundation Los Angeles | Immersion Programs

Below is a list of schools we found in the United States that offer Japanese language immersion programs. A Japanese program is considered to be a full-immersion program when 100% of class activities in all subjects are conducted in Japanese. Partial immersion programs can consist of any percent of certain classes, or parts of a school day (or combination there of) being taught completely in Japanese. In all cases Japanese is considered the target language / second language. Immersion programs are considered to be the most effective road to fluency among young learners of a foreign language.

If you have any questions about a particular program, please contact the school directly and if you have information on a school not on the list, please contact [email protected].

A History of Japanese Americans in California:
HISTORIC SITES

Shonien
Los Angeles, Los Angeles County

Rokuichi Kusumoto established the Shonien (Japanese Children’s Home)
in 1914, when he realized that the Japanese community needed such an
institution to provide care and supervision for children whose parents
could not do so.

Several conditions necessitated that the Shonien be established. For
example, economic conditions required parents to work long hours, which
could result in young children lacking proper supervision, nutrition,
and care. Occasionally, a child would be born out of wedlock, with
neither parent willing to raise the youngster. Sometimes, difficulties
between parent and child required another home for the child. Because
the early Japanese community consisted only of immigrants and their
children, the traditional extended family system that could have
provided care for children did not exist. Another factor was that many
child care agencies in the larger community were closed to nisei
children because of their race.

The Shonien has had a 60-year history in Southern California. The
first Shonien was started at 1120 Alvarado Street with six infants, and
was moved to several locations over the years as it expanded. The
Shonien has been licensed to care for 20 to 50 children at different
times in its history. Difficulties experienced during its long history
included fund-raising, meeting standards of various child welfare
organizations, locating English-speaking personnel during the early
stages of operation, and providing adequate administration of the home,
particularly during Kusumoto’s illness.

During the World War II internment of Japanese Americans, children at
the Shonien were located at the Children’s Village in Manzanar. Two
other Japanese children’s homes, Maryknoll Home and the Salvation Army
Home, were also included in the Children’s Village. In April 1942, 93
children were located in the Children’s Village. By the time the camp at
Manzanar was closed in 1945, placement with Japanese American families
had been found for all children in the village.

After the internment, the Shonien building served as a hostel for
Japanese Americans returning to Los Angeles. By 1948, inquiries for
child care facilities were received by the Shonien organization, and a
residential out-of-home care program was begun in 1956.

The Shonien closed its out-of-home care program in 1963, and merged
with other community organizations such as the Japanese American
Community Services Inc. (JACS) and Japanese American Youth (JAY), to
meet the changing needs of the community. The new organization maintains
support through fund-raising, volunteer work, and participation by the
Board of Directors to develop several community service activities.
These include a drug abuse prevention program, draft counseling, a
senior citizens’ project, and day care for Japanese and other Asian
children.

The Shonien building is a one-story wooden house. Two columns support
the gabled front porch. Several girls lived in this structure when it
was used as the girls’ dormitory section of the Shonien. The building
has been altered slightly, and is now a private residence.

December 1, 2021 Princess Aiko — the daughter of the Emperor of Japan Naruhito and  Empress Masako celebrates her 20th birthday. From now on, the entire imperial family will be engaged in important state affairs. I would like to wish Aiko a happy coming of age and a happy life path. Twenty years ago, the birth of Aiko brought great happiness to the current Emperor Naruhito, his wife Empress Masako and the Japanese people. To celebrate Princess Aiko’s entrance into adulthood today, we remember memorable days for the entire imperial family. The current Empress of Japan, Masako, was born on 9 December 1963 in Tokyo. This happened a year before the first Japanese Olympic Games. In 1965, Masako’s father, who worked at the Japanese Foreign Ministry, was appointed First Secretary of the Japanese Embassy in Moscow, and the family moved to Russia (then the USSR). Masako at that time was about 1 year and 8 months.At the age of 66, she began to go to a city kindergarten in Moscow and began to spend a lot of time with Russian children. Masako’s parents say she literally “in the blink of an eye” got used to the garden and        environment. Moreover, she got used to & nbsp; this environment so much that sometimes it was difficult to say who she & nbsp; & mdash; Japanese or  Russian. Yumiko, Masako’s mother, later talked about that time. Masako got used to Russian in just three months, and gradually it came to the fact that she began to speak Russian in sleep . The kindergarten she went to was located in such a way that it was attended by both Russian children and children from families of foreign diplomats living in Moscow and other foreigners. And the kids from 8.30 am to 5 5 pm communicated in Russian, and did it with great pleasure. But after returning home, Masako spoke Japanese. After a while, I noticed that she became practically “bilingual” Russia, a country where there is a lot of snow Around this time, Masako learned to ski. According to Masako’s father, former diplomat Hisashi Owada, in Moscow, their family spent a lot of time together. On weekends, the whole family went to the dacha of the embassy in the suburbs of Moscow, where the ride skis, skates and sleds. In the summer we walked a lot and enjoyed the greenery in the vast parks of Moscow, and also traveled around the picturesque surroundings of the same embassy dacha. From that time, even as a child, Masako fell in love with the movement, which later helped her to turn into a very athletic girl. The happy life of the entire Owada family in Moscow lasted almost three years, more precisely two years and nine months. Upon completion of the business trip in Moscow, the head of the family was transferred to the post of First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Japan to the UN, and the family moved to New York. entertainment associated with snow is undoubtedly an important memory for the current empress. When Aiko was born, the family of then-Crown Prince Naruhito (now His Majesty the Emperor of Japan) also began to spend a lot of time in winter fun in the snow. And when Princess Aiko grew up, then with the whole family she began to go to ski resorts and love to ski skiing nowadays Princess Aiko is great at mountain skiing. These happy family moments become real for Princess Aiko value.________________________________________________________________________________ Midori Watanabe — well-known Japanese journalist and TV presenter. History of relocations. USA, Vietnam, Spain

We continue to tell the stories of gamedev specialists moving. In this article, you will learn about relocations to the USA, Vietnam, and Spain.

  • Relocation history. Ireland, Germany, Sweden
  • Relocation in game development. Referrals, salaries, relocation packages
  • Relocation histories. Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Poland
  • In the next articles in this series, we will talk about the island of Cyprus, which is important for the Russian-speaking game development, and about what it is like to change three countries in a few years. Don’t switch, as they say.
“The sky’s the limit!”

I was offered to move to Los Angeles for work in 2015. But the process with the documents was long and it turned out to arrive only after two years. We left with my wife, then our daughter was born here. I made the decision to move within five seconds: we both speak English well, we know the culture.

I did not study or find out anything. Before, I came to Los Angeles a couple of times, talked with colleagues who lived there. They were very open and kind to me.

Housing in Los Angeles takes about 30% of the salary. Kindergarten – $ 1100 per month, parking – $ 10 per day. You can read a book for $20 or go to a Michelin-starred restaurant from $500 to several thousand. The sky’s the limit!

I wanted something new and absolutely got it. It is warm, beautiful, there are mountains, an ocean, a huge network of national parks. Of course, there are disadvantages: the high cost of real estate, long distances. The film “La La Land” perfectly describes my relationship with the city.

Tips and observations

Don’t drive blindly. If you are thinking of moving, then first look at how life works there. Communication with another culture has not made anyone poorer. Be open to new experiences and don’t be afraid.

Los Angeles is the 146th city in the world in terms of quality of life (according to Numbeo 2021 statistics).

Kaliningrad – Ho Chi Minh City – Kaliningrad

“The quality of life has collapsed into the abyss”

After ten years of work in Russia, I left for Vietnam to work as a game producer at Gameloft. At that time, a quarter of all employees worked there. I have long wanted to try my hand at a large international corporation, work in a different language environment, compare my skills and knowledge with new requirements. In addition, I plan to live in various parts of the world, so relocation to Asia seemed like a very good idea.

The offer caught me on a trip, I received a call in the middle of a shopping mall. The recruiter refused to wait and asked me to call at all costs. Walking around the evening Gdansk, I once again weighed all the pros and cons and the next day I accepted the offer. We moved together with my girlfriend. We first left our cat in Russia, planning to pick her up after we settled down in a new place.

Ho Chi Minh City (or Saigon) is a non-tourist city. Therefore, information about tourist Vietnam was not useful. I had to collect data bit by bit, Vinsky’s forum helped the most. As it turned out later, there is very little information about life in Vietnam in Runet. It is better to look for it on English-language resources. Therefore, we moved, not at all imagining what and how much it would cost there. I understood that it would be inexpensive there, and savings allowed me not to worry about the financial side of the move.

When I moved to another company, I was preparing for a super challenge. I thought that I would have to try hard to fit into the new rules. However, the working adaptation took just a couple of weeks: he quickly began to bring benefits and established relationships with the team.

My apartment in Ho Chi Minh City (two bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen-living room, furniture and appliances) cost $500 per month. Utilities and internet came out another $100. Ho Chi Minh has Vietnamese, Chinese, tourist areas and an area where expats live. My house was part of a residential complex built by the Japanese. The territory was closed with its own park by the lake, a fitness center, a Japanese shopping center.

Adaptation to everyday life was painful.

Cheap food is easy to find, but it will be Vietnamese and low quality. For a couple of weeks in Vietnam, we switched to imported products. They bought meat products and beer from Japan, sauces and wine from America, German yoghurts, milk from Australia and France, cheese and butter from Holland, Thai noodles and sweets. From the local bought only meat, herbs, fruits and fish. $600 was spent on groceries. If you do not buy imported, spending would be reduced by three times. In local restaurants you can eat for $10-20 without alcohol, in foreign restaurants in Vietnamese areas – for $30-40.

Everyone in Ho Chi Minh City rides motorbikes. This option didn’t work for me. Therefore, I had to travel to the office and back exclusively on Uber. Taxi cost $150 per month. A ticket to Singapore and back cost $100, to Seoul – $200.

With the move, the quality of life has collapsed into the abyss, unfortunately. Dozens of things I used to have disappeared from my life. Ho Chi Minh City offered a completely different way of life, which I could not get used to.

Tips and observations:
  1. Be prepared that it will not be possible to recreate the usual comfortable world. The new place will require a mental overhaul, otherwise you will build your own Brighton Beach.
  2. Try to find local expat communities on social media. So you can see the real situation of life in the new city.
  3. Remember that relocation is not a one-way ticket. This is a new and interesting experience. If you do not like a new job or country, you can return home with the acquired knowledge, impressions and acquaintances.

I’m currently marketing for Voicemod, a gaming company targeted at gamers and influencers. Prior to that, I worked in marketing and brand marketing in game development studios for over five years.

Every relocation was easy. Every time I went for an interesting project, for me this is one of the main motivational factors. Information, like everyone else, was looking for on Numbeo. Everything matched, except for the rent when I moved to Brno. Then there was an explosion in the real estate rental market, and prices crept up sharply.

In Valencia, rent and utilities cost 1200 €. My apartment is huge: three bedrooms and a living room. A loan for a luxury-class car, gasoline and extended insurance take about 550 €. Food, delivery restaurants – 600-800 € for two. Due to the coronavirus, we almost always use free outdoor activities.

In Moscow, I liked the fast life, the feeling of a big city. Brno is a small town with a more rural lifestyle. There everything is in order with activity and social life, but shopping is scarce. Valencia has a wonderful climate. The city itself is medium in size and the food here is great. Here I had difficulties with socialization: because of the crown and the language barrier.

    Tips and observations:
    1. Pay attention to the prospects of the labor market. It is worth playing it safe and understanding what other interesting companies you have in the place of your possible relocation. It is better to have alternatives so that there is plenty to choose from, and not go where they will take you.
    2. Look closely at your employer. Find reviews on Glassdoor and similar sites. If you have an international relocation, many countries have a requirement for a minimum tenure with the company.

Valencia is ranked 55th in the ranking of cities in the world in terms of quality of life (according to Numbeo website statistics for 2021).

  6. Avenue of Stars

Sidewalks 18 blocks on both sides of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street – the location of the Avenue of Stars, the most famous movie stars , television and politics.

The first 8 stars “lit up” on Hollywood Boulevard in 1960. Actress Joan Woodward, who was on the list, took the risk of being the first to agree to the memorialization ceremony. Every year the collection of granite stars on concrete is replenished, more and more bright, honored people of cinema, theater, radio, television and music leave an eternal memory of themselves for future generations. The bright star is the name of the brilliant creator of entertainment for children, the creator of magnificent cartoons and attractions, Walt Disney.

Unsurpassed comedian and tragedian of all times and peoples Charlie Chaplin is immortalized here with two stars. The legendary musicians of the English quartet, the brilliant Audrey Hebpern, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Elvis Presley. It is impossible to count all the names of the 2,500 thousand celebrities, among which even now the well-known name of the extraordinary billionaire politician Donald Trump. But not only real personalities are “lit” here, the fictional characters of Mickey Mouse, Shrek, Donald Duck and others also have their own “stars”.

Before being honored to be reflected on the Walk of Fame, each applicant is selected by a specially created committee. Any person who is willing to pay $30,000 to install a memorial sign can choose a candidate for placement in the Alley. How strict the selection is can be judged by the fact that every year out of 200 proposed personalities only 20 to 30 pass. One of the selection conditions is at least 5 years of active creative activity of the applicant in his field. Not everyone agrees to perpetuate themselves: Julia Roberts, Clint Eastwood refused. When laying a star, the personal presence of the owner is required, but Barbara Streisand and J. Clooney ignored the ceremony of laying their star.

    Dolby Theater

The huge (3400 people) hall of the Dolby Theater hosts the annual ceremony of awarding filmmakers with the Oscar award. A grand upgrade of the theatre’s technical capabilities and the installation of state-of-the-art equipment made it possible for the famous circus troupe “Du Saley” to perform on its stage with its incredible tricks and large-scale props.

During the Oscars, the luxurious hall of the theater turns into an arena for demonstrating dazzling smiles, chic outfits, the triumph of beauty and grandeur of Hollywood celestials. Elise shone on the stage in different years. In front of the façade of an outwardly unremarkable building, there is an expressive sculpture of Oscar. In addition to the awards ceremony for Hollywood filmmakers, Dolby hosts various gala meetings, anniversaries, concerts and even celebrity weddings.

    Getty Center

Initiated and funded by California’s wealthiest oil tycoon, J. Guetta, the museum complex is a series of magnificent buildings that blend into an artificial landscape of scenic sculpture gardens and natural natural sites. It is located on two ridge elevations connected to the foot by funiculars. An avid collector interested in art, Getty collected a large number of exhibits, for which a villa was first built to house them.

With the increase in the number of works of art, there was a need for more space. The oil tycoon purchased a 250-hectare site in the Santa Monica Mountains, and since 1984, grandiose construction has begun here under the guidance of an experienced architect Meyer. Instead of the planned 4 years, construction lasted more than 10 and was completed in 1997, for which Getty spent $1. 3 billion. What happened as a result, the world recognized as the eighth wonder of the world – the landscaped territory of the Center is so beautiful, the architectural masterpieces are magnificent!

Today it is one of the most visited places where you can see enough of the beauty of the garden infrastructure, admire the paintings of recognized masters of painting, see antique sculptures. Getty left huge funds to his Foundation, with which employees now have the opportunity to acquire more and more new works of art in different directions. An extraordinary personality, a successful businessman and pragmatist, Getty, a romantic and dreamy person at heart, left a wonderful memory of himself.

    Rodeo Drive

The iconic Hollywood movie Pretty Woman features one of the shortest and most glamorous streets of Beverly Hills’ fashionable Rodeo Drive: a luxury hotel and the same boutiques where Roberts’ character goes to dress up. Therefore, even those who have not been here have an idea about the level of purpose of local buildings. Three blocks of Rodeo Drive, intersecting with Santa Monica, Wilshire and Crescent Drive boulevards, are part of the Golden Triangle – the focus of luxury and special chic style.

Elegant boutiques sell only haute couture items from around the world: Dolce and Gabbana, Lacoste, Chanel, Tiffany and others. Not so long ago, a very pretentious row of boutiques a la France appeared on Rodeo Drive, decorated with bizarre fountains, arches and other bells and whistles. Persons (including Hollywood stars) come to them, who are served by special shopping consultants.

You should not enter here in jeans and T-shirts, following the elegant dress code rules. At night, Rodeo Drive, flooded with neon lights of advertising, gives the impression of a celebration of wealth. And on Christmas days, here is a real fairy tale, created by magical patterns of illumination. It is enough just to walk along the street, contemplating what fabulous money is spent on, and get your aesthetic pleasure.

    Rancho La Brea

In the center there is an amazing place that does not correspond to luxury and fashion at all – one of the bituminous lakes of California, called Rancho La Brea. These are natural formations formed as a result of long-term decay of the remains of extinct animals: mastodons, short-faced bears, ancient bison, saber-toothed cats, giant sloths.

Skeletons and bones of these prehistoric representatives of the fauna are still found in the areas of bituminous lakes, which are placed in the expositions of the Museum. Among them there are specimens whose age is about 400 thousand years. Many sculptures of exotic animals have been created at Rancho La Brea: mammoths, elephants, a “terrible” wolf, a bear; certain species of rare flora are presented. This place is of great interest to tourists and locals.

    Wilshire Boulevard

This is another Golden Triangle street that rivals Rodeo Drive in terms of the number of expensive shops, high-end restaurants and nightclubs. On a stretch of the boulevard (2.4 km), called the “Golden Mile”, a real paradise for shopaholics. In luxury boutiques, they are offered exclusive clothes, shoes, hats from famous manufacturers.

Amateur theatre-goers have the opportunity to attend a performance in any of the several theaters located here. The same can be said about fans of museums, there are two of them on the boulevard: Artistic and Paleontological. In this area, skyscrapers are not inferior to New York in their majestic height, and the number of respectable executive class cars is off scale. Wilshire Boulevard is the center of luxury, wealth and vanity.

    Universal Film Studio

The oldest film studio in the United States was established in 1912 and successfully produced silent films. Over the past century, the company has acquired the status of a powerful film factory with a high technological and artistic level of production. The emblem is the well-known image of the globe with rings revolving around it, on which the proud name Uniwersal (Universe).

The legendary Hitchcock, actors Cary Grant and Lana Turner and other movie stars worked here for many years. The famous “Jaws”, the popular “Desperate Housewives” were filmed here. Now the film studio organizes interesting tours of the themed zones “Universal” with exciting stunts and adventures. During the voyage through the pavilions, a predatory shark may be waiting for the participants, trying to attack; or a very tangible “earthquake” (8.3 points) and other amazing surprises. On an area of 1.7 sq. km you can literally travel around the world.

From an ancient Egyptian square with majestic temples you get into an untidy, colorful Mexican town with all its attributes; you find yourself in England of the era of Queen Victoria; and then – on the street with wooden houses of the Wild West, etc. In the film studios, tests like a terrible fire or a crazy water element await. Here it is possible to penetrate the secrets of many horror films with “werewolves”, “ghosts” and other horror stories. A lot of exciting rides connected with movie plots make those present squeal with fear and delight. The sea of the most vivid impressions leaves a visit to the famous film studio of the world.

    Warner Brothers Film Studio

Anyone who has watched the American movie hits Harry Potter, The Matrix, The Devil’s Advocate and dozens of other popular films is familiar with the image of the symbolic golden shield with the WB logo against the bright blue of the sky. The two capital letters represent the surname of the Warner brothers. In 1903, the 4 enterprising Warner brothers rented an empty funeral hall in a small mining town in Pennsylvania and staged a paid demonstration of films in it.

With the proceeds, they bought the property of the Cascade Theater, which launched the career of the Warner Brothers film studio, opened in 1918 on Sunset Boulevard. More recently, Warner Bros bought out New Line Cinema, boosting the film industry’s production capacity. The company’s film library contains real film masterpieces: Ocean’s 13, The Green Mile, The Lord of the Rings, 300 Spartans and other wonderful films.

Tours of the studio pavilions are accompanied by a guide who tells in detail about the secrets of making films, stunts, special effects. On the territory there is a Museum, which contains the details for the movie “Harry Potter”. An interesting object is the Museum of Scenery, where scenery for cult films is collected.

    Arboretum

A wonderful corner of nature, a picturesque oasis located in the Champs Elysees – the Chavez Ravine arboretum, equipped on the initiative of the city authorities as a natural air purifier of the metropolis. Almost 1000 species of trees, representatives of different parts of the world, are planted in it.

Here you can not only breathe clean air, admire the outlandish flora, but also have a good rest, walking along the alleys and sitting on benches in the shade of trees. The blooming Australian Tristania iaurina is pleasing to the eye, all covered with bright yellow clusters of inflorescences. In Russian, it sounds like “laurel tristania” and grows up to 20 meters.

The decoration of the arboretum is evergreen species of trees and shrubs, palm trees of various species, exotic shrubs with fragrant flowers. There is a large library on the territory of the garden, where a huge number of books about plants are collected, courses and master classes are open. There are several cultural and historical monuments, the Peacock cafe with a corresponding interior. Here you can hold a wedding, corporate parties, family celebrations and photo shoots.

    Museum of Modern Art

Not far from Rancho La Brea is one of the best art museums – the LACMA Museum of Contemporary Art, which collects works of modern painting, graphics, sculpture, applied art of representatives of different nations living in the city. There are permanent exhibitions and temporary exhibitions presenting new names and original works of art. Some of them (exhibitions) become a sensation in the cultural life of the city and even the United States.

The number of exhibits is constantly growing, so the Museum is gradually expanding its holdings and already now occupies 3 buildings, which showcase works of avant-garde, expressionism, pop art, visualism, photography. There are almost 100,000 items in the museum’s storerooms. The Museum’s library organizes lectures, educational conferences and seminars on the history of art, on acquaintance with the latest achievements in various types of contemporary art.

    Peterson Car Museum

The car, which has become an integral part of our lives, has been a constant companion of man for more than a hundred years. From the first clumsy and bulky, ugly and sluggish models, cars have “grown up” to bright, luxurious, impetuous suites that make many people longingly dream of buying this or that car as the most cherished acquisition. It is no coincidence that there are car museums in many major capitals of the world.

Los Angeles, which is called the Peterson Automobile Museum, which opened at 1994 and now included in the top ten museums in the world in its category. Literally the entire history of the automotive industry is presented in the largest car collection in the world, where 150 cars, trucks and motorcycles are located on 3 floors. The first floor represents the history of the creation of cars in the world, clearly confirmed by samples from the oldest models (1904) to the latest, produced in different countries in different years.

The 2nd floor introduces exclusive cars of Hollywood celestials: the magnificent Clark Gable’s Mercedes Benz, Crawford’s Cadillac, Mainesfield’s Lincoln, Batman’s Batmobile, rare cars from The Great Race movie and other interesting specimens . On the 3rd floor is a paradise for children who are interested in all models of children’s vehicles created over 100 years. The 4th floor consists of a conference room and a restaurant. About 1 million people visit the museum every year.

    Union Station

When you first see the only railway station, you immediately feel the Spanish flavor in its architecture, complemented by a row of thin trunks of palm trees growing nearby. The exotic building was designed by architects

Parkinson, father and son. The station can be seen in several Hollywood films such as Catch Me If You Can, Blade Runner, Pearl Harbor and others. As a major transportation hub in California, Union Station carries nearly 60,000 passengers per day. International and regional trains and commuter trains (Metrolink) depart from the station.

In addition, several metro lines pass under the station – the final stop of the “purple” and “red” metro lines, there is a stop of the “gold” line. From above runs the route of the high-speed tram. Residents do not use railway transport often due to the high cost of tickets.

    Griffith Park

This wonderful place breaks all the stereotypes about the metropolis as a bustling city in which there is no place for greenery. In the very center of the city, a colossal area of 1,700 hectares is set aside for a magnificent park. Its history is interesting. At the end of the 19th century, a certain Colonel Griffith bought an old run-down ranch on the banks of the river. There he decided to make an ostrich farm. This business turned out to be so profitable that Griffith donated 1,200 hectares belonging to him to the city. It was at this place that the most popular place for recreation was created.

The territory of the park is very well-groomed, walking among the picturesque landscapes is a pleasure. The observation deck is especially attractive. This is one of the iconic places in the city. Santa Monica is a small cozy satellite town. Extensive sandy beaches, picturesque sunrises and sunsets attract many tourists here. Particular attention should be paid to the pier. This wooden structure was built 100 years ago. Now the pier resembles a small amusement park. There will be activities for both children and adults. The pier goes into the waters of the ocean for 300 meters. The children’s attraction “Hippodrome” is very interesting.

Children rode 44 wooden horses a hundred years ago. Equally attractive is the Ferris wheel. Riding on it, you can admire the surroundings from a height of 40 meters. On the one hand, a view of the metropolis opens, and on the other, the boundless ocean. This is the only such attraction in the world that runs on solar energy. An annual landmark event is associated with this pier – the famous circus du Soleil pitches its tent next to it.

    Dodger Stadium

The United States is unthinkable without baseball. Everyone from young to old is fond of this sport, and outstanding players are considered common favorites. One of the most important baseball teams in the country is the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 1962, a huge stadium was built in the city, which immediately became their home arena. By age, the Dodger Stadium ranks third in the country after Boston and Chicago, and in terms of capacity it is the first.

It is interesting that the money for the construction of such a large-scale sports facility was allocated from private sources. This sports arena hosted the All-Star Game, which took place at 1980 year. A huge number of fans gathered here when the World Series games were played. Eight times baseball stars have gathered here for a series of decisive games. In 1984, this arena hosted team meetings during the Olympic Games. TCL Chinese Theater

Tourists walking around the city are always attracted by the exotic Chinese-style building. The starting point of its history is 1927. At that time, the famous impresario Grauman was in the city, who had already built more than one building. He dreamed of creating a unique Chinese pavilion in which premiere shows could be held. The construction was completed in a year and a half, and the grand opening of the theater amazed the townspeople.

Now it is a small complex, which includes the theater itself and a small courtyard, closed by 12-meter walls. Beautiful copper domes and graceful fountains, reminiscent of lotus flowers, give this place an amazing flavor. In front of the theater there are slabs decorated with hand and foot prints of famous actors. The interior of the theater is also very good. It fully reproduces the magnificent national Chinese style. There are group tours, which are very easy to get on. Another group leaves for inspection every 15 minutes. The theater is still active today. There are not only premieres, but also regular sessions.

Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels

The city is unique in every way. Even the most popular religious building has unusual architectural forms. It is a cathedral belonging to the Roman Catholic Church. Previously, the dominant role was played by the Cathedral of St. Viviana. It was destroyed in a powerful earthquake in 1994. The diocese decided to build a new cathedral. The author of the project was the well-known Spanish architect Jose Moneo Valdez. He was inspired by postmodernism and designed the building without right angles.

Above the massive bronze doors leading to the cathedral is a radiant statue of the Virgin Mary. About three thousand people can be in this grandiose church at the same time. The interior is strict and ascetic. The decoration of the cathedral is considered to be a huge organ, the height of which is 18 meters. Under the church there is a mausoleum where anyone can buy a burial place. From the ancient Cathedral of St. Viviana, stained-glass windows have been preserved, which have found their rightful place in the new church.

    Venice Beach

Venice Beach is a must-visit. Once this area was supposed to be a kind of Venice for wealthy people. But the idea failed during the Great Depression. The area was occupied by representatives of Bohemia, who firmly settled here. Many artists, musicians and other talented people have drawn inspiration from this place. It was here that the famous Jim Morrison lived. On the beach, one could often see the young bodybuilder Schwarzenegger.

As time went on, the crisis was over and the area was again flooded with money. But this no longer affected the free uninhibited spirit that reigns here. Now vacationers have access to any entertainment. You can admire a variety of street shows, buy a variety of souvenirs, look at bodybuilders lifting weights, try Mexican fast food.

Of course, America’s favorite pastime, surfing, thrives here. You can rent a board and take express courses. Here is the realm of youth. It is a pleasure to admire the dexterous movements of surfers who fearlessly conquer the ocean waves. In the evening, there are a great many bars that are everywhere here, music sounds over the coast.

Five gates lead to Runyon Canyon, located on different sides. Admission is free and around the clock.

    Bradbury Building

There are sights that you must see with your own eyes, otherwise the impression of visiting the city will be incomplete. This category includes a unique building located in the heart of the city. Hollywood movie buffs will immediately recognize many of the interiors, and famous photographers have taken their best photographs on the famous staircase.

This building was built by millionaire Lewis Bradbury, who set himself the goal of creating the most beautiful structure. At 1893 year it adorned the city. Surprisingly, the appearance of the building does not even hint at what splendor awaits visitors inside. Victorian hall, Italian marble stairs, floor tiles from Mexico, openwork French railings – all this can be viewed for hours. The gaze involuntarily stops at every detail.

Of course, this mixture of styles was not only admired, many critics called the building and its interior an architectural nightmare. Nevertheless, this attraction deserves attention, without seeing it, the impression of the city will be incomplete. This building is currently in operation. The police department is located there, but the lobby can be viewed by any tourist. Of course, there are also guided tours.

There is even an organ here, and recognizable melodies from Disney films are played on it before each session. Of course, you can buy souvenirs here. The ground floor often attracts visitors with unusual costume displays.

    Grammy Museum

The history of this place is not very many years old. The first visitors entered the museum in 2008. At this time, the fiftieth anniversary of the prestigious award was celebrated. The opening year is also infamous for the global financial crisis. This fact nearly jeopardized the opening of the museum. Musical celebrities have helped in this difficult situation by donating money.

The exposition occupies four floors. Colorful decoration emphasizes musical and historical artifacts. A variety of styles and directions coexist peacefully here. One of the floors is a special vault containing music recordings.

The museum also plays an educational role. Conferences, seminars, performances by famous musicians are regularly held here. You can visit an interactive exhibition and even record your own track on professional equipment.

    Huntington Library

This is another attraction that owes its appearance to the millionaire. In one of the suburbs, the railroad magnate Huntington bought himself a villa. In the first quarter of the 20th century, he laid the foundation for an amazing collection of works of art. His wife played a big role in this. The exposition boasts masterpieces by Gainsborough, Lawrence, Rogier van der Weyden.

In addition, the Huntingtons were fond of collecting rare books. It houses the unique Gutenberg Bible, the first edition of Hamlet, letters and personal documents of celebrities (Washington, Lincoln and others). The collection contains many autographs of great figures. Now it is not just a library, but a whole research center, to which the University of Southern California is directly related.

    Barnsdell Art Park

The combination of natural beauty and art is another unique attraction. This is a territory of beauty and harmony, an ideal place for self-expression. Shady alleys, beautiful statues and magnificent flower beds provide inspiration, while the panoramic observation deck pleases with stunning views of this dynamic city.

The contribution of the art park to the cultural life of not only the city, but also the world cannot be overestimated.

    Norton Simon Museum

Businessman Norton Simon has invested huge sums of money to amass a magnificent collection of masterpieces. The collection is appreciated all over the world, and this is not surprising. Here are brilliant works, ranging from the Renaissance to contemporary art.

The names of the artists whose works can be seen here would do honor to any European museum – Raphael, Rembrandt, Goya, Botticelli and many others. The main treasure is a collection of masterpieces painted by the Impressionists. Monet, Pissarro, Degas, Renoir – their works are side by side in this exposition. The building itself is surrounded by a picturesque park, a walk through which will be an excellent preface before meeting with the world of beauty.

    Japanese Garden

Life in a modern metropolis is very bright, dynamic and full of impressions. But even the most active people sometimes want to relax and be alone with nature. The Japanese garden provides an opportunity for quiet walks, contemplation of perfect landscapes and philosophical reflections.

The estates of the feudal lords of Japan served as a model for creating a garden. Visitors can get a change of scenery by walking around the three zones. There is a stone garden where huge boulders symbolize the elements of nature. A small embankment, murmuring streams and small ponds showcase peaceful and poetic landscapes.

Then the guests move to a special garden for tea ceremonies. Here, each element has its own symbolism. Nothing distracts from the contemplation of nature, everything is surprisingly harmonious and thoughtful. This is truly a great place for relaxation and meditation. To take away the memory of this unique sight with you, you can go to the souvenir shop before leaving.

The National Guard is called to kindergarten – Newspaper Kommersant No. 79 (7280) dated 05/06/2022

The government of the Ulyanovsk region intends to propose to the federal government to establish mandatory protection by the troops of the Russian Guard in all schools and kindergartens. This decision was made following the analysis of the causes of the Veshkaim tragedy – when a resident of the region killed a kindergarten teacher and two children. However, the Russian Guard points out that the implementation of this proposal will require an increase in the staff of the service by 600,000 people.

On Thursday, Ulyanovsk Region Governor Alexei Russkikh presented the public with the first conclusions from the Veshkaim tragedy. Recall that on April 26, a resident of the village of Veshkayma, Ruslan Akhtyamov, killed a neighbor, took his gun and came to the Ryabinka kindergarten. There he shot the teacher and two small children, after which he committed suicide. At the same time, there was no security guard in the kindergarten – only an alarm button. The Minister of Education of the Ulyanovsk Region, Natalya Semenova, explained to Kommersant that there was no violation of the law in this. The fact is that the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 1006 of August 2, 2019year divides educational institutions into various “categories of anti-terrorist protection”, with the main criterion being the number of students. “Ryabinka” belonged to the fourth category – “objects with a population of less than 100 people”, where there is no requirement for a security guard. At the same time, an interlocutor in the administration of the governor of the Ulyanovsk region, in an interview with Kommersant, called these conditions strange – “because in the fourth category there are the same children who also need to be protected. ” “We intend to revise the categorization of educational institutions according to the level of danger in order to increase their protection,” said Alexei Russkikh at a meeting of the headquarters. He instructed the regional government to go to the federal center with the initiative to transfer all schools and kindergartens without exception under the protection of the National Guard forces. “Because, as a rule, the security guards of private security companies today are people of retirement age, they are not armed, they only have a panic button at hand,” the governor said. “This is a problem for all regions of Russia.”

It should be noted that proposals to transfer the function of guarding schools and colleges to the National Guard or the police were made after each attack on an educational institution.

For the first time this topic began to be seriously discussed after the shooting at a Moscow school (2014, one person died). After that, there was an incident in Ivanteevka (2017, four people were injured), an attack on a school in Ulan-Ude (2017, four people were injured), a shooting and an explosion in a Kerch college (2018, 21 victims), executions in a Kazan gymnasium ( 2021, nine dead) and Perm State University (2021, six people died). The response of the law enforcement agencies to this demand was the same every time; after the Veshkaim tragedy, it was repeated by the deputy head of the National Guard, Oleg Plokhoy. “This will entail serious financial costs, for which we have not yet found sources of financing,” he explained. human”.

At yesterday’s meeting, Governor Aleksey Russkikh noted that “an armed mentally ill person cannot be stopped by any guard.” According to Mr. Russkikh, “new algorithms are needed to control and work with people who are on psychiatric records.” “It is necessary to amend the law on mental health care to provide surveillance not only for patients with aggressive behavior, but also for patients who may have such behavior,” the governor said.

Vice-Governor Alexander Korobko said that it is necessary to correct the legislation and “return compulsory treatment of people with mental illness if they themselves do not want to be treated.”

Recall that Ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova stated that Ruslan Akhtyamov “was registered as mentally ill.

Aleksey Preobrazhensky, head of the state-legal department of the governor’s administration, told Kommersant that a working group would be set up as early as Friday to work out the region’s initiatives – “and proposals will be prepared during May.” However, Alexei Kurinny, deputy chairman of the State Duma Health Committee, First Secretary of the Ulyanovsk Regional Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, doubts that the proposal to amend the law on psychiatric care will be accepted: “Now a new version of this law has been prepared in the zero reading, but nothing is provided for strengthening supervision. The treatment and advisory group of mentally ill people is much larger than the group that is under observation. And to cover them all, to assign some insignia or to supply some information about inadequacy, from the point of view of modern psychiatry, is wrong. I see no prospects for preventing such tragedies in changing this legislation.” According to Mr. Kurinny, instead, the outpatient link should be strengthened: “It, being on the regional budget on a residual basis, is far from being in the best condition today. Meanwhile, it is at this level that it is possible to monitor the condition of patients and identify deviations.”

Great place. Next time I will have to visit 🙂 Thank you for the story

Please) It is very beautiful there, but you need to go for at least half a day, and better for the whole day. To not rush.

I can point you to another wonderful place. Lake Shrine is called. I went there for an hour, but you can walk there endlessly 🙂 http://logra.livejournal.com/271303.html

Hello! Thanks for the tip. This park near Pacific Polisades is well known to us as it has a well-known surf spot for beginners. The only drawback is that the park is small, you can only walk around the lake, and the road, unfortunately, does not close in a circle. And yes, it is very beautiful there.

Not closing? And we walked around 🙂

Yes, it’s strange… I was there a year ago, and at the end of the circle there was such a dead end or something. .. a construction site, now it’s hard to remember. Maybe tomorrow we’ll go for a drive and look there. On June 21st, 2014 01:38 pm (UTC), oregonez commented:

    – Descanso gardens

Singer Lena Katina does not hide the fact that in her youth she had many complexes, but now the star does not want anything in me. How she managed to achieve harmony with herself, Lena told in an interview with AiF magazine. PRO Health.

“I don’t like to limit myself in something”

Anna Kurtanidze, “AiF. PRO Health”: — Lena, how was your summer? Did you manage to arrange a vacation, a honeymoon trip? By the way, congratulations on your marriage!

Lena Katina: – Thank you very much! We combined a vacation with a honeymoon trip and flew to Turkey with a large company. Everything went well: they recovered, swam and received a dose of vitamin D.

    — Many girls are hard at work preparing for the holidays: they go on diets, arrange fasting days. Is this your topic?

    – Let’s put it this way: there is always a desire to prepare for a vacation, but it never works out. (Laughs) Before traveling, I usually have a busy tour schedule, so my entire interval diet goes to hell. But I seem to be in good shape anyway.

With my beloved husband Dmitry and on an unforgettable journey, and on the red carpet of the music award. Photo: From the personal archive

    – Maybe you have a secret how not to gain weight on vacation?

    – You need to swim more in the sea, because calories are burned faster in open water, and lightly lean on the buffet. Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to do the last thing this time, so upon returning home, I sat down on a hard “interval”.

    — How long have you been practicing intermittent fasting?

    – In principle, I always adhered to it, it’s just that it used to be called “not eating after 6”. For me, this diet worked and continues to work. Maybe, of course, not as effective as before, because age and childbirth certainly leave their mark, but still … I don’t like to limit myself in something, so the scheme according to which you eat whatever you want at certain hours of the day, I am completely satisfied.

Lena Katina. Photo: From the personal archive / Artyom Klimakov

    – In one of the interviews, you somehow mentioned that while working in the Tatu group, you ruined your body. How did it happen?

    — At 14, I decided to go on a diet and couldn’t think of anything better than eating nothing. I had hungry faints, my stomach hurt, and then a stone grew in my gallbladder, which at the age of 20 was removed along with my gallbladder. As soon as I realized that my health was in danger, I grabbed my head and started eating normally. Fortunately, I did not have an eating disorder.

    “Red hair suits me”

    — Do you teach your son to a healthy lifestyle?

    – Absolutely! Sports are always on the schedule. Sasha recently finished doing gymnastics, but left taekwondo. As for nutrition, I watch what he eats: be sure to have soup for lunch, meat, fresh or prepared vegetables. Sometimes I make indulgences in favor of dry cereal for breakfast or some sweet treats.

Mom cannot refuse sweet treats to her little son Sasha. Photo: From personal archive

    – Are you a strict mother?

    – I don’t think so. But I always defend some fundamental points to the end. Sometimes, like any mother, my patience bursts, and, for example, I deprive my son of the phone. In addition, I limit the time of using gadgets, because if this is not done, the child will sit in them for days.

I didn’t hesitate for a long time – I immediately said “yes”! Photo: From the personal archive

    – You look like your son’s older sister! How do you take care of yourself? Do you go to a beautician?

    — I have practically no time left for a beautician. I use care cosmetics at home, I practically do not make up to give my skin a rest. And most importantly, I try to get as much sleep as possible. That’s all my secrets!

    – Red hair has already become your brand. Ever wanted to change color?

    – No, I like myself the way I am. Red suits me, it doesn’t look artificial on me. I think the color and length of the hair is completely suitable for my character and style.

“It is important to be alone with yourself”

    — How did you achieve such confidence, love for yourself?

    – I’ve been working on this for a very long time. In adolescence, I had the wildest complexes. My nose, hair, buttocks pissed me off… But fame and people’s love came to me early, which helped me to love myself. When strangers, especially men, often tell you that you are beautiful, it raises your self-esteem. I also worked through all the problems with self-acceptance with a psychotherapist. I think that you should not be afraid to seek help from specialists and pull out your childhood and youthful traumas. Unfortunately, even after years they can cause damage to our lives.

Photo: From the personal archive/ Artyom Klimakov

    — Now people have begun to pay more attention to mental health.

    – Yes, and that’s great. My child has been going to a psychologist for 3 years now. After my divorce with my ex-husband, I did not doubt the correctness of this decision for a second.

    – You manage to work, raise your son, and take care of the house. Do you find time for rest?

    – In fact, I devote little time to myself, and for this I get both from the psychotherapist and from relatives. But I’m trying! When I have free hours, I like to go for a massage or just lie down at home in the bath with a mask on my face. It is important for me to be alone with myself and do what I want at the moment: read books, sleep, or cook something delicious.
