Furthermore, we provide continuous internal professional development opportunities to ensure our staff is constantly acquiring new skills and methods of encouraging growth and learning.

Individualized Attention

We recognize that each child has their own unique set of needs and their own pace at which they adjust to new activities and environments. We provide plenty of individualized attention for each child at our Chicago daycare center, offering enriching opportunities for all children no matter where they are on their developmental path.

Thoughtful Programming

Every aspect of our Chicago daycare program is carefully considered to nurture a specific, age-appropriate developmental skill or set of skills, a holistic approach that will lay a foundation for a lifelong love of growing and learning. From early exposure to music and languages to activities that promote socialization, creativity, and physical development, we are constantly refining our programs to provide the most well-rounded experience possible.

Safe and Supportive Environment

A child must feel secure in order to thrive, which is why we create an environment that protects both the physical and emotional well-being of each child. Under the watchful guidance of our highly trained, deeply committed and caring staff, your child will have the security and support they need to explore their world, try new things, and develop the social skills that will continue to serve them throughout their lives.

Commitment to Nutrition

Proper nutrition is an important part of childhood development. All children, ages 15 months and up, participate in our food plan. Our caterer Healthy Organic Kids provides healthy, nutritionally complete meals and snacks that will keep your child well-nourished throughout the day, while also establishing a foundation of healthy eating that will continue to serve them well as they grow.

We Take Safety Seriously!

At LadyBug and Friends your child’s safety is our top priority, and we understand that with COVID-19 you likely have questions about what procedures and protocols we have put in place to keep your child protected. We wanted to address the measures we are taking to provide a safe environment for your children, your family members, and our staff.

About LadyBug and Friends Chicago

At Ladybug and Friends we make it our mission to provide a holistic approach to early education, giving each child a safe environment to explore, learn, and grow in a manner that recognizes their unique qualities as they build a foundation for their future.

Our curriculum is designed to meet the specific developmental needs at each stage of early childhood, fostering qualities such as positive self-identity, emotional well-being, social skills, language, reasoning, creativity, physical development and respect for diversity and community.

We strive to ensure that these developmental goals are met through joyful and engaging activities that encourage development while nonetheless providing a sense of play and personal autonomy. I was sent to prison for leaving a seven-year-old child at home alone for two hours

My name is Tatyana. I live in Chicago (Illinois). I live with my daughter and recently with my husband.

I brought Sonya to the USA to save

I adopted Sonya as a very tiny baby in Ukraine in 2010. In August 2011, I brought her to the USA, to Chicago, to have an operation. Without her, she would have died.
After the operation, we lived with her in America for almost five more months – it took her so long to be able to recover and gain strength sufficient for the flight. In January 2012 we returned home.

We were paid for treatment and accommodation in the USA by a sponsor. There was a rich man who simply gave money to save the life of a child.

In Ukraine, Sonya was on a high dose of warfarin, a blood thinner, and was covered in bruises from head to toe. If bleeding had happened then, she would hardly have been saved. Again, in Ukraine, it is believed that warfarin should not be given to a baby, and even in such a dose.

In general, because of Sonya’s health, we again returned to America. Sonya went to a kindergarten with a Montessori program, where she was not just looked after, but they knew about her health problems, about the operation. The same sponsor helped pay for the kindergarten and rent an apartment. I also had to pay a lot for the fact that Sonya was under the supervision of doctors: every week I had to donate blood, every three months to do an ultrasound of the liver, every six months MRI. I then had a student visa, I studied. We used to live in Chicago. Every six months I flew with her to Ukraine, because my older children lived there.
In 2015, I was offered a job – to teach at my own educational institution the material that I had already passed to other students. Sonya went to kindergarten, I worked, I sent money to children in Ukraine.
If something had happened to the baby then, she would have been operated on immediately. So she was in good hands.

In 2016, the sponsor who helped us all this time found himself in a difficult situation. He even had to flee with his family to the Baltic States. He could no longer help us…
My student visa expired back in 2015, and all my savings too. There was nothing to live on. I could not teach without a visa. I was scared to go back – Sonino’s health especially did not allow this, I am a doctor by training and I know what I’m talking about.
I was desperately trying to survive, to find cheaper housing, at least some work. .. Sasha helped me a lot then. At that moment he was my friend. He paid for housing, and I was looking for work – after all, it was necessary to continue sending money to children in Ukraine, they lived only on them. Their father, my now ex-husband, did not work.

At some point, I just went to clean other people’s houses. On the day when I left Sonya at home alone, I was just supposed to meet with another employer.
I left her an iPad and some food and said that I would be gone for three hours at the most. That as soon as I return, we will immediately go for a walk in the park – it is a five-minute walk from us. True, in order to get to it, you have to cross a not very busy road twice, and once, with a traffic light, a busy one.

Sonya sat at home for nothing and decided to go to the park on her own, especially since her classmate from the first class lived in a walking block from the park and walked there all the time….

She left the house, crossed all these roads and reached the park. The friend was not there. She went to his house and then went back home. No one would have noticed this, and perhaps I would not even have known that she was alone like this for a walk. But it was summer outside, at that time the children from the summer camp were resting in the park. By the way, I couldn’t send Sonya to the camp, because then she was taking Kumadin, an anticoagulant. Because of this, she didn’t even go to the zero grade, her health was a priority. So I went straight to first grade. In the summer, she was just supposed to rest well and safely.

The first thing the policeman took her to was McDonald’s

Todd Kent/ Unsplash

Anyway, one of the teachers who was with the children from the summer camp, when she saw my girl, immediately called the police. A patrol car immediately arrived – they drive around the area all the time. Sonya walked home with a confident gait when the police stopped near her. First of all, she was asked where her mother was and whether she had eaten today.
Sonya answered that she was hungry, and the policeman took her to McDonald’s (!!!). And only then to our house, Sonya left the back door open there and it was possible to enter.

The policeman entered our apartment with her, found some of our documents, they contained a phone number and called me. At that time I was already on the train home.

I was told to go to the police station, they said I would be arrested, and my daughter was transferred to foster care, such as a temporary orphanage.

Sonya was asked about her friends, she told about that same classmate. The policeman asked his mother to accompany them to the station. And when I arrived there, I was allowed to look through the door at the frolicking Sonya. She ran and laughed with the policeman and the boy’s mother. They played hide and seek. The child paid no attention to me at all. And this is understandable. She had a lot of fun – she did not understand what she had done, drove around in a police car, ate at McDonald’s (although I fed her before leaving) and played hide and seek.

I was immediately told to tell everything and confess everything. And I, like the last fool, told the truth – yes, I left one of my seven-year-old daughters for a maximum of three hours. The policeman then told me verbatim:
For such a crime, you face 6 months in prison, deportation, and the child will go to a foster family, and then, most likely, will be given up for adoption.
– Still, – then I thought, – A nice little blonde with blue eyes, of course, there are a lot of people who want her …

Out loud, I said that I went looking for a job as a cleaner, that I was trying to survive, that I was a single immigrant mother. They asked me something about my education and visa, that’s all.

If you find yourself in this or any other situation involving the police, SILENT.

You have every right to remain silent and this will not be used against you in any way, but your words will! Remember the fifth amendment and Miranda rights law and keep quiet!

Then they would have nothing to say to me, but I was horrified and told them literally everything! I was interrogated by two women and one male detective. And so he told me in the end that my life was ruined, ended, even before it had even begun, that my education could be sent to the trash can, I would never become anyone in this country, but would be deported, and by that time Sonya would be found parents better than me.

Then I was stripped almost naked. I was wearing a T-shirt and knee-length leggings, on top was a T-shirt and a short denim skirt (it all happened on July 10th). I was ordered to take off my T-shirt and leggings, I was left with a T-shirt and a short skirt on an iron couch in an ice chamber.

There was not even drinking water there, just a dirty floor and a rusty toilet bowl. No toilet paper or tissues, nothing. An iron couch and a kind of plaid, in fact, a piece of synthetic fabric, which I disdained to touch, and sat there, dead from the cold. Very quickly I lost track of time because there were no windows.

True, I was allowed to call once, and I called Sasha. He quit his job, took time off from his boss, and rushed to the station where I was. He immediately said that he was the father and took Sonya, who, apparently tired of playing, ran to him with all her agility. If he had been a little late, then this boy’s mother would have taken her, and Sonya would have gone to a foster family from her – such is the procedure.

Sasha took Sonya away and began to insist that I be released on bail. He was told in response that I was a criminal and put a small child in mortal danger, that I could not be released on bail, tomorrow morning I would be taken to court. Then he said:
– Ok. Then I’m going to the consul of Ukraine now and I’ll bring him here. You don’t know who was arrested. She is a very respected person in her country, and now you are just getting into a diplomatic row.

Sasha served in the US Navy, so he thought and added that he would also contact his superiors and tell him that they did not want to release his fiancee on bail for a common misdemeanor, that is, a minor criminal offense, that what I did, They are framed not as an endangerment – exposure to danger, but as a conscious child neglect – a very serious crime.

In general, from two o’clock in the afternoon he tried to get me out of there, and in the end they let me out at night. And they gave me a subpoena to appear in two weeks.

I came home and couldn’t sleep or eat… I was simply shackled by fear. The next day I found a lawyer – Yevgeny Meltser. He listened to me and said that it was bad, because I told everything, but I had to be silent. The good thing is that Sasha took Sonya, that is, he let them know that I was not a defenseless single immigrant mother on an expired student visa, but his fiancee. But he is still a citizen of the country, a veteran. And it’s good that Sonya ran to him as if she were her own. These are pluses.

But there were a lot of minuses… We were expecting a serious visit from the guardianship of children, they need to prove that ideal conditions have been created for the child at home. Plus, I have to sign up right now and start going to parenting classes, parenting class. Before the first hearing in court, you must have time to attend at least one class and bring confirmation of this.

And thirdly, it’s bad that information about my immigration status came up. It’s even very bad.

I immediately started attending those same courses. At the first hearing, we showed the judge that I both repented and realized that I had acted badly, and I am actively trying to improve. But the prosecutor opposed me, saying that she was illegally looking for a job, we need to involve the immigration police (ICE) and deport this negligent mother.

After the first hearing, Meltzer said:
Bullet with Sasha at the registry office. If by the second hearing you will already be a husband and wife, then the immigration issue will be removed completely.

I just got divorced from my husband in Ukraine, and Sasha was going to propose to me even without this story. In general, on August 5 we got married. The three of us went to the City Hall, and at the next hearing I was already the wife of a US citizen.
But the prosecutor continued to insist on punishment, although guardianship visited us and issued a document that the child can stay in the family, the conditions for her are good.

Then there was another meeting, where the prosecutor did not appear and the hearing was postponed. The next and final one took place on 31 October. There was a new judge and a new prosecutor. My lawyer gave a brief summary of the matter, the prosecutor didn’t say anything at all, the judge called me over and asked:

– Did you understand that you did wrong and violated state law?
I replied:
– Yes, your honor.
The judge turned to the prosecutor and said:
– Why has this woman been going to court for 3 months? I think the case should be closed.
Then he turned back to me:
– Go and never do that again.
The secretary printed out a special “Case Closed” document for me.

The case is closed, but the stain remains…

I’m really lucky. So, the lawyer agreed to charge me only a flat rate or a lump sum of $750. Friends and acquaintances from the church helped raise money for it. I was lucky that the judge and the prosecutor changed at the final meeting, that the lawyer was wise. Everything could easily have turned out quite differently – I was in prison for six months, then deportation … And Sonya? Who knows, perhaps she would have remained in America in a foster family.

Jon Flobrant/ Unsplash

Sonya is almost ten now. And she never understood that she couldn’t do that. She has an attachment disorder, and this has manifested itself before this situation. Sometimes, like many children, she also composes … At the beginning of the second grade, she rode a scooter without knee pads (she refused to put them on), fell and hit her leg to a bruise. At school, when she was asked where she was from, she said that it was her mother who threw knives and forks at her and hit her…

The school urgently called the guardianship (CPS) to our home. A woman came and examined everything, including the refrigerator. Interrogated me and my husband in turn, then together. After that the case was closed. But at that time, in the same department of guardianship, the case that I had left her alone had not yet been closed against me … We were just lucky that we got an adequate social worker.

Sonya was eventually referred to a social worker at the school, then to a psychiatrist, who once again confirmed her syndrome: fetal alcohol syndrome, ADHD, attachment disorder. This often happens in children of alcoholics… I was given a certificate with her diagnosis, which, if anything, can protect me from false accusations on her part.

By the way, when I asked Sonya why she lied about knives and forks, she answered:
– I thought a policeman would come and we would go to McDonald’s in his cool car.
Great, don’t say anything. By the way, what if my child is on a diet and he can’t eat at McDonald’s?

Despite the fact that my daughter is almost ten, we either take her to work with us, or someone sits with her at home. We are very afraid to leave one even for a short period of time, because she still does not understand what she is doing and what it can result in.

I still can’t get rid of the fact of my arrest, and it doesn’t allow me to find the job I want. I received a green card and now I am clearing my history (expungement) or erasing my arrest record. I hope everything will be resolved before the new year, and I can finally find a normal job. Right now I am a waitress in a restaurant. And I really want to get a residency in a hospital … But recruiters don’t want to work with me, and the lawyer (another one, no longer Meltzer) told me so:
– Yes, the history of the arrest is visible to everyone, and this is an ugly stigma that you need to get rid of, the sooner the better.

I tried to challenge the results of a Custody Investigation (CPS) that found me guilty of endangering a child and placed a ban on working with children (any work where there may be children) for five (!) years.
