PASCAL English School | Secondary education

School characteristics

PASCAL English School is a private international co-educational English-taught school for children aged 3-18 located in Cyprus. It is a structural division of the country’s largest educational organization PASCAL Education. PASCAL Education was founded in 1978 with the aim of teaching English as a foreign language and preparing students for A-Level exams in mathematics and other subjects. The organization developed rapidly, and today it is a whole network of institutions in which 1,800 students are educated and 300 teachers work. It includes 3 kindergartens, 3 primary schools, 2 Greek-taught secondary schools and 3 English-taught secondary schools: in Limassol, Larnaca and Nicosia.

Full board accommodation is currently offered only in Nicosia for high school students aged 12-18. A truly international environment has developed in the capital’s school, children from France, Belgium, Iran, China, as well as Russia and Ukraine come to study here.

The institution is fully recognized by the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture. Its graduates receive the Apolytirion (national high school diploma). At the same time, teaching is conducted in English according to the British curriculum with the IGCSE and A-level exams. The PASCAL English School in Nicosia is also accredited as an International Baccalaureate school.

Location . The PASCAL English School campus is located in Lakatamia, a suburb of the capital of Cyprus, Nicosia. The population of Lakatamia is about 40,000 people. The largest buildings in the area are an amphitheater, an art gallery, a modern stadium, a swimming pool and a medical center. Nicosia itself is the capital of two states at once: Cyprus and Northern Cyprus. This is a city with a population of 276,000 people, surrounded by fortified walls with powerful bastions. There are many temples and monuments of medieval architecture, modern shopping centers and entertainment complexes, and several universities. The nearest airport is in Larnaca, 50 kilometers away.

The climate in Cyprus is Mediterranean, very comfortable, with many sunny days, hot dry summers and mild winters. There are beautiful beaches, clear sea, ample opportunities for diving and travel.

During the training, students can see both the sights of the capital itself (Venetian fortress, caravanserai, temples, mosques, the archbishop’s palace), as well as the surrounding villages and interesting places throughout the island: the ancient cities of Soli and Tamassos, the Royal Tombs near Paphos, the ruins of the ancient Kourion with an ancient theater and a medieval castle in which the King of England Richard the Lionheart was married, in Limassol, Larnaca Castle and much more.

Features of admission. First year admission to PASCAL is required to pass a math entrance exam and an English language diagnostic test. Children who have previously studied at PASCAL elementary school are exempted from exams (and admitted first). If there are places, you can enter the institution in the second to sixth years of study. To do this, the school may ask for a report card from the last year, and / or take an exam in mathematics and English, and / or pass an interview.

Academic training

School PASCAL follows the British curriculum and includes 3 schools: preparatory, primary and secondary (high) school.

Kindergarten (Pre-Reception 3-4 years and Reception 5-7 years). Children can enter the Pre-Reception Pre-Reception class at the age of 3-4 years, followed by the Reception stage for 4-5 years. Children learn through play and exploration, being active, creative and critical thinking both in and out of the classroom. In a preparatory school, there are 6 areas of learning and development that form the educational program. All areas of learning and development are important and interrelated, especially for developing the ability to learn, form relationships and develop. Education includes: communication and language, physical education, mathematics, literacy, word comprehension and art.

Primary Years Program (PYP, ages 6-12): Primary Years 1-6. Pascal follows the British Cambridge Primary Curriculum in three core subjects: English, Mathematics and Science. The school also follows the program of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus, where it is possible to study the Greek language. The Foundation’s training program also includes the following subjects: ecology, geography, history, art and design, music, physical education, design and technology, household economics, ICT, world confessions.

Senior school 12-18 years old . The high school program is a 6-year program, that is, students graduate after graduating from the 12th grade. Pupils of 1-3 years of study master 14 compulsory subjects, students of 4-6 years of study master 6 compulsory disciplines and 3-5 elective subjects.

Years 1-3 (corresponding to years 7-9 of the British program): English, Greek, French, mathematics, history, science (biology, chemistry, physics), geography, art, music, drama, physical education, computer technology , classics, religious studies. All subjects are taught in English, with the exception of Greek, Religious Studies and Classics, which are only available to Greek-speaking students. Foreign students can choose to study Greek as a foreign language, the history of Greece, religious studies or attend additional English lessons.

Years 4-6 (corresponds to the 10-12th year of study in the British program): the course consists of compulsory disciplines and 3-5 electives. They are offered at various levels of study and lead to the Apolytirion High School Diploma, which is recognized by the Cypriot Ministry of Education and Culture, as well as by British and other European universities. Compulsory subjects: English, computer technology, physical education. For native speakers of the Greek language, the Greek language, the history of Greece, and religious studies are also obligatory. Foreign students master them at will or replace them with additional English lessons. Elective disciplines: mathematics, ICT, physics, chemistry, biology, economics, accounting, history, art, psychology, English literature, French and German. At the end of the 4th grade, students can take IGCSE exams in selected subjects, in the 5th-6th grade – AS / A-level exams.

IB Program. Students have the opportunity to earn both an IB diploma and certificates in selected IB courses. To receive an International Baccalaureate diploma, students must study a total of six subjects over 2 years: 3 at the standard level and 3 at the advanced level. The list of disciplines offered includes: English, Greek or any other native language, foreign language, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, economics, history, art and ITGS (Information Technology in a Global Society). Students are also required to write a 4,000-word research paper on a chosen topic (extended essay), take a course in Critical Thinking Theory (CIT), and complete the CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) program.

Specialization of the school. Lessons are held from 7.45 to 13.55. After lunch, the work of the so-called All Day School is organized – additional classes in mathematics, English, science, examination subjects, which take place until 15.45. The purpose of these classes is to help students master the material, prepare for tests and exams, in-depth study of subjects for strong students – all this is facilitated by small groups.

School graduates enter the best universities in the world, including Cambridge, the London School of Economics, the Royal, Imperial and University Colleges of London, universities in Bath, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Durham, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Liverpool, Leeds, Warwick and York University in Britain, Munich University in Germany, Charles University in the Czech Republic, Rutgers University in the USA, University of Toronto in Canada and others.
