Preparing, Painting and Sealing — Art is Fun

How to prepare a wall before painting a mural

Before you begin painting, you need to check the wall and prepare your workspace.

Clean the wall

First, make sure that the wall is clean and not suffering from any moisture damage or structural problems, such as cracks. If you notice cracks, spackle them, but be aware that there may be an underlying structural issue that could eventually cause cracks across your mural. Examine the wall closely for signs of mold, dirt, wax, oil or grease. If you find any, clean it off thoroughly, and be aware that mold or mildew may return unless the underlying cause has been rectified. Even if the wall looks clean, it’s a good idea to wash it anyway with a mild soapy solution, such as T.S.P. Cleaner (trisodium phosphate), to ensure that you are starting with as clean a slate as possible.

Next Step: Priming the Wall

Priming the wall is an important step in creating a mural, because the primer will help the paint stick to the wall more easily.

In some cases you can apply the primer directly over the pre-existing paint on the wall, and the mural will be fine. It depends on how much elbow work you want to put into it and also on how long you want the mural to last. If you are really concerned about the longevity of the mural, then you should take some additional preparatory measures before you start painting.

To get the most permanence and best adherence of acrylic paints onto the wall, strip the existing paint off the wall by sanding it with a sanding block. To reduce the amount of dust caused by dry sanding, prepare a mild soapy solution by mixing TSP or dishwashing liquid with in a bucket of water. Dip the sanding block in the bucket of cleaning solution, squeeze out the excess water and sand the wall thoroughly. Allow the wall to dry.

After the wall has thoroughly dried, apply a coat of acrylic primer over the entire wall. You don’t want to buy regular acrylic primer (such as gesso) that you would use for a painting because it’s expensive when used in large quantities. Instead, buy something like Ronan Prime-All (this links to Blick Art Materials, and if you make a purchase I get a small commission that helps support this site). You can also get acrylic primer from a home improvement / DIY store in a gallon can, which will get you better bang for your buck.

Now, you have three choices:

  • You can start painting directly onto the wall. This is what most people will want to do at this point. If you’re ready to paint, skip ahead to the next section.
  • You can add texture to the wall (for example, by applying plaster). This can create an interesting surface, but be aware of how it will affect the final painting. Will it add to the look or would it be an unnecessary distraction?
  • If you prefer to paint on canvas, you can adhere a large piece of pre-primed unstretched canvas to the wall, similar to the way you would hang wallpaper, using an adhesive like Jade glue, Unibond, or wallpaper paste. However, don’t attempt to glue up a finished painting on unstretched canvas, because it will be really difficult to get it to adhere correctly.

Okay now…Ready to paint?

Mural Techniques

To get started, you’ll need to transfer your image onto the wall. By now you should have a sketch of what your mural will look like, so you’ll need to enlarge the image into the wall using either one of these mural techniques: the grid method or an art projector. Use a pencil to trace the image onto your wall.

If you make a purchase via the links below I receive a small commission, which helps support this site.

Now that you have your pencil outline, you can start the underpainting. The underpainting consists of large blocks of color, over which you will paint more detail later. Depending on the colors in your image, you can use interior household paint for large areas of color (blue skies, green fields, etc), or you can mix your artist-quality acrylic paints with a Liquitex Ultra Matte Gel or Matte Gel Medium by using a 1:1 ratio.

From here on out, most mural techniques are similar to the painting techniques that you would use when painting with acrylics on canvas. Here are some of the many different mural techniques at your disposal:

Sponging

Sponging is a good way to create the sense of texture in a mural, such as clouds in the sky or leaves on a tree. You can also sponge a color on top of another color to create more of a sense of depth and interest, rather than leaving an area as a flat, single block of color.

Sponging is also one of the handy mural techniques for quickly filling in large areas with color.

To sponge, first wet your sponge and squeeze out the excess water. Dip your damp sponge lightly into your paint, then lightly blot the sponge on some paper towels. You don’t want your sponge to be too loaded with paint, or it will ruin the effect.

Stippling

Stippling is one of the popular mural techniques for creating detail without worrying about smooth blending. For instance, if you’re painting a green field, you can bring it to life by stippling other colors into the green. Here’s how to do it:

Apply a green underpainting, then after it is dry, paint a thin coat of a different color over top of it (for example, a yellow-green or a darker green).

While the paint is still wet, dab the wet paint with a dry stippling brush and dab the new color around until the new layer is all stippled. If done correctly, the new color will no longer looked “brushed on” and some of the underpainting will show through. You can repeat this mural technique as many times as you need (with as many colors as you want) until your desired area is covered.

This is a nice mural technique for creating the illusion of a field alive with shades of green, dappled in yellow sunlight.

Stenciling

Stenciling is a popular mural technique because it is fairly simple and anyone can do it – you don’t need any special art skills. You can buy stencils in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, from alphabet letters to farm animals to wildlife, trees, planets, you name it!

To stencil, use a painter’s tape to adhere the stencil to the wall. With one hand, hold the stencil in place and with your other hand, paint in the color. You need to be cautious around the edges, because you don’t want too much paint build-up on the edges when you lift the stencil away. Use a sweeping, circular motion when applying paint near the edges to avoid build up.

You can also use a stencil as an outline, and paint in details later. For example, you can follow the mural technique described above to stencil the image of an alligator in a solid shade of green. Then remove the stencil and paint in details, such as eyes, teeth, and bumpy skin.

Antiquing

Do you want to make your mural look old, emanating a sense of history into the room? You can achieve this by antiquing, which is one of the easiest mural techniques. To antique a wall, mix your desired color (usually siena or umber to create an aged look) with an acrylic glazing medium, using the ratio of 4 to 5 parts glaze to 1 part paint. Brush the mixture onto your wall and quickly – while the paint is still wet – run a clean rag or cheesecloth over the paint to spread it around. For an added effect, you can use this technique to add even darker color to the corners and edges of the wall.

Glazing

To create acrylic glazes on a wall, mix the acrylic paint with an acrylic medium Golden Glazing Liquid. This will thin and “stretch” the paint, making it more translucent. When you paint a glaze on the wall, the color underneath will show through. This is a handy mural technique for adding dimension and shading to your mural.

How to finish and seal a painted wall mural

Congratulations! You’ve gotten this far – your mural is finished. Now you need to protect it to ensure that it stays vibrant and beautiful for a long time to come.

The final step to finishing your painted wall mural is to seal it. This means applying an isolation coat and a varnish. Use a clear, non-yellowing archival varnish in a matte or satin sheen. (Glossy varnish would be too reflective for a wall mural, and probably look weird under interior lighting conditions.) Choose a varnish that is removable, in case you need to get underneath the varnish for conservation purposes. (Who knows, they might take out your wall and put it in a museum someday!)

To apply the varnish, refer to the back of the bottle for the correct ratio of varnish to water. Start in a corner, using a wide paintbrush to brush on the varnish, going in a cross-hatching manner (little x’s) across the wall. This varnish mural technique will help the varnish look more even. Voila! Your fabulous wall mural is complete!

Mural Painting Tips

Follow these mural painting tips to ensure a smooth mural painting process!

  • Use an acrylic matte medium or glazing liquid to thin your paints. This is very important! When painting on canvas at an easel, you are more likely to use water to thin your paints – but if you are painting on a wall, there is more chance that the watery paint will trickle down the wall and streak paint on whatever you’ve already painted. So be sure to use an acrylic medium instead of water, although you can use a bit of water to help keep your brush moist and to keep your paints from drying out.

  • At every step of the way, take a moment to step back and look at your mural from a distance. It is important to keep in touch with the bigger picture. By stepping back regularly, you can immediately tell if something is wonky, and correct it. It is important that the mural looks good from up-close and also from far away, so constantly check to make sure that it looks good from all possible angles and distances.

Choosing A Design

First, you have to decide if black and white is the style you are going for. If you want more color, then you can consider designing with painter’s tape or geometric shapes first and then adding hand-drawn elements to your painted wall patterns.

Modern Style

Before we decide to just draw on the wall, we were looking at different black and white hand-drawn wallpapers at places like Etsy and Pottery Barn.

Things To Consider When Planning Your Wall

  • Do you want an abstract design, nature-inspired or a combination for your DIY accent wall design?
  • Do you want a variety of lines where some are thicker and some are thinner?
  • What else will go on the wall? Will the space be broken up with things hanging on the wall like a shelf or mirror?
  • If designing a more traditional faux wallpaper, are you going to repeat the same pattern over and over? If do this you will probably want to consider making a template like we did when making this painted geometric wall idea.

Our Plan

We knew that we wanted a natural look to the lines and even a sketchy quality. This faux wallpaper would be more random instead of completely repeated.

By not worrying too much about the repetition you are able to just have fun drawing a bathroom wall mural.

Best Markers For Drawing On Walls

This is one of the most important parts of creating a hand-drawn wall. You can use a variety of different types of permanent markers, however, we recommend using these water-based paint markers.

Be careful, because these markers can also come in oil-based. If you ever want to change the room decor, it will be easier for you to paint over your wall mural if you draw with water-based markers instead of oil-based ones.

How To Use Paint Markers

Paint markers take a little bit of getting used to. We recommend practicing your drawing on paper before just jumping right into the white wall. This will help you get the feel and how much pressure to apply.

Get Your Marker Started

First, you have to follow the instructions to get your paint marker started.

  1. Open the package.
  2. Keep the paint pen upright and press the tip down into the canister.
  3. Recap and shake the marker.
  4. Press the tip of the paper to fully saturate the tip.

Recommended Supplies

  • Water-based Paint Markers With Medium Tip: Buy at least the 3-pack so you can change out markers when the lines are not as bold as you would like.
  • Pencil with a great eraser: As crazy as it sounds, we love Ticonderoga pencils, and having a box around is always a great idea.
  • New Wall Paint Color: We used Samplize peel-and-stick paint samples to help us decide on which white paint was best for our small space.

Want Bolder Lines? This broader tip paint marker is also a great option and comes in a variety of colors.

No matter what design you choose, you can follow our basic steps. If free-hand drawing a mural isn’t really your thing, consider making a stencil out of cardboard that you could easily repeat.

Before You Begin

  • You should have practiced drawing with paint pens and markers.
  • You also need to start with a clean and dry painted surface. We painted our walls with SW Pure White before beginning this drawing process.
  • Tape any areas where your lines may hit the other walls and counters. Small pieces of tape will work just fine.

You can see what this half-bathroom looked like before.

Do you need help deciding what color of paint to use?

We recently just tried Samplize and it totally beats having to buy individual paint samples. These 9″ x 14.75″ samples will get shipped directly to you and save the hassle of clean-up (we loved that).

Promos: Use code “FIRSTFIVE” to get $5 off your first purchase.

How To Draw With Markers On Your Wall

Step 1: Create A Sketch Of Your Design On Paper

Sketching your design on paper is very important. Your design will naturally change once you start, but it is good to help get your ideas on paper first.

Step 2: Sketch Very Lightly With Pencil On The Wall

As lightly as you can, draw on the wall. If you think you can just go for it with the marker, it will save some eraser time in the end.

Since we were free-hand drawing this mural, we found pencil sketching was the best way to go for our design.

Pro Tip: Step away from the wall periodically and look at the sketch from a distance. When looking up close for a while it is hard to see what it really will feel like in the space.

Step 3: Begin Tracing With Paint Pen

Use the paint marker to go over your designs. It is easiest to do the thin lines first and then go back to thicken the lines that did not turn out as well.

Pro Tip: When drawing on the wall, hold the paint marker at as much of a 90-degree angle as possible. This will help the paint flow out of the tip and give you the smoothest and bold line.

Step 4: Continue To Look At Your Mural From A Distance

Step back and look for areas that could use more details, thicker lines, or ones that should be left alone. Like most artmaking, it can be hard to decide when to stop. Just remember, sometimes less is more.

Here is the start of the lines that were continually made thicker.

Step 5: Let The Paint Marker Fully Dry

These markers dry surprisingly fast on drywall. Just give extra time before erasing as you do not want to smudge all your hard work.

Lines still have a sketchy quality but have been made bolder.

Step 6: Erase Visible Pencil Lines

On our Pure White wall, we were nervous about eraser marks and smudges. The pink eraser on a good-quality pencil worked the best for us with the texture of our wall. You can experiment with other erasers, but some seemed to smudge more than others.

Take your time when erasing on your paint pen wall.

Optional: Use A Foam Brush For Touch-Ups

If have any areas that you don’t like or that smudge, you can use a small foam brush with your wall color to try to clean those areas up. Just be careful you don’t overdo it and make an area worse.

Tips For Success

  • Before beginning, test that you are able to erase pencil lines on your wall without smudging or looking horrible. You need to be to lightly draw and find the right eraser for your space.
  • Paint markers or pens will give you a smoother and bolder line than regular permanent markers.
  • Plan your faux wallpaper ahead of time. If repeating a pattern, make a stencil or tape out guidelines.
  • You can use an overhead projector to project design on the wall. We were unable to do this due to this half bath being such a small space.

Before and After Small Bathroom Makeover

This “before and after” half-bathroom makeover was done with very limited demo.

We love this budget-friendly gold mirror we added to the accent wall.

Tutorial FAQs

Do the water-based paint markers smear?

When using the marker, you need to be careful not to rub your hand against the wet paint. Once the paint marker dries, it appears to be very permanent. The lines did not smudge when erasing the pencil and also when water was rubbed a little on the wall.

Can you use paint pens on walls?

Paint pens or markers are the perfect way to draw a fun mural or create faux wallpaper easily.

What is the difference between paint pens and paint markers?

Paint pens usually refer to a smaller tip on the end such as ultra-fine or fine and paint markers generally have a broader or chisel tip. You can use any-sized paint pen or marker for your mural. It just depends on what you are comfortable with and the details you are drawing.

Can you only use black markers for walls?

No, you are able to find water-based paint pens and markers in a variety of colors. If you don’t want white walls with black then you could always try to black or gray walls with white paint pens. for a fun and modern mural in your home.

How many markers did we use for our paint pen wall?

This accent wall has a lot of drawings and bold lines and we did not use 3 full markers. To keep the lines fresh and bold we switched between a 3-pack of water-based medium-tipped paint markers. We still have some paint left in all 3 markers.

Another popular solution is to draw a map (world, city or abstract). It is very important here to be able to draw straight lines and make even coloring (drawing areas with an even, dense color).

Many at least once came up with the idea to radically change their home. Make an unusual interior, add notes of exclusivity. Transform housing in such a way as to be completely sure that none of your friends and acquaintances has such a design. What can be presented as an individual style? Wallpaper, panels, any paint compositions – all this has long been familiar to everyone and, in fact, has already become boring. Refresh the atmosphere will help …… a drawing on the wall!

Who didn’t draw on the walls as a child? All without exception. So maybe it’s worth remembering this golden time? Just do everything correctly and most importantly – beautifully.

What will be the main instrument?

Regular brushes can be used as a tool. Attention should be paid to the fact that they should be different. It is necessary to stock up on at least three types of brushes with different pile thicknesses. If there are concerns that, instead of transforming the walls, they will be spoiled due to a lack of talent in the field of drawing, you can use a stencil. In this case, a foam roller or sponge is required to apply the paint. For some craftsmen, cans of paint will suffice. Graffiti art continues to be an original, fashionable way of painting and why not take it from the street to the apartment. This will undoubtedly give the interior brightness and personality.

Choosing colors

When choosing colors, there are certain rules that can rather be referred to as recommendations:

  1. Any colors are chosen. Ordinary gouache or acrylic will do. You can use tempera paints.
  2. It is best that the paint composition has moisture resistance. Then the drawings will acquire the quality of durability.
  3. Paint density should be of medium quality. If they are made too liquid, they will run off the wall. Too much density will make it difficult to move the brush.
  4. It is not recommended for beginners to start “creating” by choosing a large number of shades for drawings. In particular, the initial number of colors should not exceed three shades. This will greatly facilitate the task of decorating the background of the picture. Proper use of selected colors will add elegance to the pattern.
  5. One color is often enough for an “artist”. And black. Despite its gloom, this paint is very popular because it creates beautiful abstract paintings.

Drawing always draws on a clean and smooth surface. Therefore, when deciding how to make drawings on the wall in an apartment, they first of all think about the state of the foundation itself.

The preparation period is divided into several stages:

  • all irregularities must be removed. In some areas, plaster the depressions, somewhere knock down the influxes with a hammer;
  • prime and putty the surface;
  • make sanding;
  • apply a covering coat of paint. The composition must be durable and waterproof.

Preparation will take time and effort, but the result will be a smooth surface that is pleasant to work with.

If the walls are too uneven, it is recommended to sheathe them with gypsum boards. Sheathing is made on a metal frame. The main vertical profile guides and racks are fixed with self-tapping screws on the floor and ceiling. The step of the racks is 0.6 m. To strengthen the rigidity of the frame, use the transverse profile of the plank installed inside the racks at a distance of 1 meter from each other in height. GKL sheets can be fixed both in one layer and in two. depending on the quality of the material. Joints are leveled with putty on sickle. A primer and a full surface putty are carried out. The layer should not be thick. It is enough that the subsequent painting of the wall surface simply does not create gaps.

Finding a place to work

As for the choice of a place for the manifestation of one’s talent, this choice can fall on any room. This can be done in the kitchen or decorate the wall in the hallway. And of course, in the first place, such work is carried out in the living room. At the same time, young parents often use this type of design in the children’s room. Less common, but still quite common, this type of interior design in the bedroom. If we recall such a type of layout as a studio apartment, then the drawing will undoubtedly show off in the hall.

Techniques for painting walls

In addition to being able to use the wall as an art canvas, there is a wide range of options for marking the design on the wall. Each of them is interesting in its own way. In general, they represent a variety of techniques for creating drawings on the walls with their own hands. The following methods are known:

1. Pencil drawing. Reception is considered difficult and lends itself only to people with the appropriate skills. The sketch must be perfect, without distortion. It is necessary to observe the proportions of the elements present in the picture and correctly reflect the direction of the lines. In addition to the main tool – a pencil, you need to use an eraser and a soft cloth to remove the remnants of the stylus.

2. Drawing with paints. There should be no amateurs here. Especially if the plans are to create something beautiful and amazing. More often, experienced artists take on such work. To begin with, they determine the base tone. It can consist of several colors, which will be applied to the contours of the central and most large-scale details of the picture. Then choose the central element of the composition. All other elements in the picture will be somehow interconnected with it. Any three-dimensional image is chosen as the basis. It can be a tree with a spreading crown or a ship sailing on the waves.

3. Using stencils. This method can be called the simplest. It is mainly chosen by those who like the symmetry and clarity of the image. Here the pattern is formed as an ornament. The main thing is to place it on the wall in such a way that an overall beautiful composition is created. To do this, you need to accurately select the points for applying paint, apply, if necessary, the lines along which the ornament will pass.

A ready-made stencil can be bought at the market or shop. Sometimes they take several types at once. This creates the versatility of the image. To form an individual look, stencils are prepared independently. Manufacturing technology is simple. A picture or patterns is selected and output to the printer. Then glued onto cardboard. With a sharp paint knife, excess elements are cut out. Everything is quite easy and accessible to everyone. The stencil is certainly one of the most successful inventions. It will not only help those who do not have drawing skills, but mainly create a clear composition. The paint is applied with a roller with a foam coat or sponge. Make sure it doesn’t drip. To do this, first, roll out the roller on the grid.

4. Transfer pattern by squares. Somewhat more difficult than using a stencil, although in a sense the fact of working with a pre-prepared sample is also traced here. A drawing is created on a sheet of paper or, using a ready-made picture, it is divided into squares. This is the source material. Next, the image is transferred to the wall. It, like a sheet, is drawn into squares, but already on an enlarged, individually accepted scale. Carefully, calmly, following the source code, lines are drawn in large wall cells, which, connecting with each other, as a result form the very picture depicted on the sheet. To some extent, this method can be called a kind of pencil drawing due to the similarity of some technological details.

5. Draw a pattern using shadow. This technique has little practice. Not many are in a hurry to use it in such creativity as do-it-yourself wall painting. Despite the fact that this method is quite easy. The main thing is to set the right lighting. Then the shadow from the object is projected onto the wall on an enlarged scale. It remains only to mark the shadow contours with a pencil. As a blank for a wall picture, you can use a pattern cut out of cardboard or some beautiful detail (branch, silhouette, human profile, and so on). The scale is selected by approaching or moving away from the wall.

Shading will be done with a projector or a powerful lamp. Next, they act with the usual pencil and eraser.

6. Three-dimensional drawing on the wall. This technique of decorating wall surfaces and reproducing relief drawings is original and very interesting. There is also work with a stencil, but in this case it must be very dense, have a certain thickness. Suitable plywood or a piece of rolled insulation. The stages of work are as follows:

  • pattern cut out;
  • the stencil is applied to the wall and fixed with masking tape;
  • prepare a special gypsum-based plaster mixture with good adhesion;
  • fill the cutouts in the stencil with the finished mixture. The remains of the mixture are carefully cleaned with a spatula;
  • after 10-15 minutes, after the gypsum has hardened, the form is removed and a wet relief blank of a three-dimensional pattern remains;
  • with a stack and a small amount of solution induced, the element is brought to the required state. Small influxes are removed, recesses are leveled;
  • with a brush dipped in water, sharp edges are smoothed out;
  • then carry out the primer of the entire wall and wait until it dries;
  • the resulting surface is covered with paint. This process is usually carried out up to three times;
  • after the paint has dried, the induced, darker color is covered with relief elements. To make everything look beautiful, you need to decide in advance on the color contrast. Colors can differ dramatically from each other, but at the same time look very harmonious.

To all of the above, we can add that this technique is best used in rooms with low traffic and not crowded with plenty of furniture. It is completely unsuitable in the corridor, where the increased traffic flow and the pattern can be deformed.
