The salary of a scavenger in New York is ten times higher than the salary of the President of Ukraine

When Noel Molina sniffs garbage, it smells like money to him, big money. Noel and his colleague Tony Saknar have been collecting garbage in New York for 10 years, but their income can be envied by a graduate of a prestigious college, states CNN.

Working as a scavenger is certainly not easy. Colleagues saw many very unpleasant things in this life: rotten fish, huge rats, dead pigs and cows, and once Senkar even saw a human leg in a basket. At the same time, they work on the night shift, from 7 pm to 3 am, and in any weather: in rain and severe cold, garbage must be removed from the streets of the city.

And yet, they love their job. One of the reasons is their decent wages. “Your trash is my money,” says Molina, 32, with a childish grin on his face. His income as a garbage truck driver last year was $112,000, Sancar earned $100,000 as an assistant. At the same time, their salaries grew 8 out of 9recent years.

CNN notes that not many graduates of prestigious universities can boast of such income, because at the initial stage their income is on average 30 thousand a year.

At the same time, finding suitable workers for the job of a scavenger is not as easy as it seems. After all, employees need great physical strength and endurance, the ability to work with various mechanisms and endure the constant stench.

It is worth noting that 100 thousand dollars at the current rate is about 2.5 million hryvnias. For comparison, the salary of the President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, is about 112,000 hryvnias per year, and the salary of Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk is about 82,000 hryvnias. Andriy Kobolev manages the state company Naftogaz, whose turnover is more than UAH 100 billion a year. His salary is just over 300 thousand hryvnia per month. Slightly taller than a garbage man in New York. In connection with the low salaries of Ukrainian officials, a discussion has begun in the country about the need to increase them.

Scavengers in New York earn $88,000. And they can go for $ 200 thousand

It is generally accepted that cleaning the streets is not a noble occupation and even somewhat shameful. Russian schoolchildren are even often scared: “If you don’t study, you’ll go to work as a janitor!”

But one view of New York’s scavengers shatters these stereotypes to smithereens.

YouTube

Employees of the New York Street Cleaning Department have their own uniform, which is somewhat reminiscent of the police: badges, white gloves, shoulder straps and caps are indispensable attributes of scavenger uniforms. And the name of the highest command position is very spectacular – “General Superintendent of the fifth level.”

The New York City Street Cleaning Department is the largest street cleaning department in the world. This is not surprising, since New York also ranks first in the amount of waste generated. The Department employs 9,245 workers, with 298 wheel loaders, 2,500 garbage trucks, 689 road salters, 450 sweepers and 2,360 auxiliary technical devices. Every day, the employees of the Department take out and process about 12 tons of garbage.

New York scavengers earn $33,746 a year, rising to $88,616 after five years of service. Teachers, parking lot workers, and subway workers receive less than that amount. The Department Commissioner and Level 5 Superintendent General have the highest salaries. Their earnings are about $ 200 thousand a year (by the way, the chief of the New York police receives the same amount). The Street Cleaning Department also has its own union. And scavengers can retire after 25 years of work experience.

Getting a job as a scavenger is not easy. A couple of years ago, more than 96,000 applicants applied for 500 vacancies. This is even more than applicants for admission to Harvard. An employee of the employment department comments on such a difficult selection:

“We take the selection of employees very seriously. After all, scavengers are people whose services are used by all residents, without exception. If not for their daily work, life in the big city would freeze once and for all.

YouTube/Trashman242

Applicants for the position of scavenger must have strength, stamina and a willingness to learn how to work with professional equipment.

The work of a scavenger is not only highly paid and in demand. Thanks to street cleaners, many crimes are solved every year. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistic, scavenging is the fifth most dangerous occupation in North America. For example, Edgar Brito, a cleaner from Massachusetts, opened a bag while collecting garbage and found parts of a human body in uncured cement. Edgar figured out the tenant who owned the package and ran into the house, where he saw traces of blood everywhere. Edgar Brito independently detained the owner of the apartment, who was just packing his bags to fly out of the country and hide.

YouTube/Trashman242

But the danger of work also lies in the number of deaths at work. In the California city of Stockton, someone threw a gun into the trash, which, under pressure, began to shoot. One of the bullets hit the driver of the garbage truck, the gas tank was also shot through, as a result of which the garbage truck exploded. There were two other cleaners in the car.
