How Much Should You Pay Movers Per Hour?

How much is too much to pay for movers? Every moving company is different, but knowing average costs will get you the most bang for your buck.

According to the most recent statistics, the costs of hiring full service movers can be in average $2300 for in-state movers , and $4900 for out of state movers.

What are the average hourly rates of movers?

When it comes to moving, there’s no one size fits all move cost. Everything about you, your current home, your new home, and the specifics of your move get taken into consideration.

When you finally decide to hire a moving company, price tags may get a little scary. You may not be able to budget the hourly rates of movers down to the dollar, but it helps to have a good general idea of what you might pay.

Home Size Average Price No. of Movers Ave Cost / Hr # Hours
Studio $278 – $ 599 2 movers $95/hr 2-4 hours
1 Bedroom $389 – $750 2 movers $95/hr 3-6 hours
2 Bedroom $750 – $1900 3 movers $125/hr 4-8 hours
3 Bedroom $1250– $3500 4 movers $165/hr 6-12 hours
4 Bedroom $1,400 – $5100 4 movers $165/hr 8-14 hours
5 Bedroom+ $2500 – $8000 5 movers $200/hr 10-16 hours

Of course, the longer the distance and the larger the number of household goods you’re moving, the more you can expect to pay. Professional movers will consider the weight of your load into the final cost, among other additional factors.

How much does full service moving cost?

If you want the most stress-free way to move, then you need a full-service move. This means that everything associated with your move is completed by the professionals. All you practically have to do is sit back, relax, and kick your feet up.

Even still, with a full-service move, the cost is still just an estimate because every move is just so different. You can expect to pay anywhere from $25 to $50 per hour for a full-service move.

This includes everything from packing to unpacking and everything in between. Moving a typical 4 bedroom house will usually take on average 10 hours to complete, or anywhere from 8 to 12 hours. That means you can estimate paying $900 or so.

Keep in mind that no matter what the sticker price, you’re definitely getting your money’s worth. A full-service move can take an average of 51 hours – and that’s for the professionals. Just imagine how much of your own time and effort you would likely spend if you had to do it all on your own.

For an out of state full-service move of a 3- bedroom house, you can count on a time estimate breakdown similar to this:

  • Planning time- 48 hours: This includes the time it takes to schedule an appointment and the actual quote which is assessed by an hour or so walkthrough of the home
  • Packing time- 2 to 3 hours: This includes everything, everything you want the movers to move, less a few valuables or essentials you might take with you, they will complete
  • Unloading- 1 hour: Ever feel like unloading takes you the whole day? Leave it to the professionals, they’ll get it done in an hour.
  • Total: 51 hours.

Is it cheaper to hire movers during the week?

The answer is yes, it is cheaper to move during the week than on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, so save some pennies where you can.

Like anything else, there are peak moving times, which are typically on the weekends and during the summer. If you can work it into your schedule, cross country moving companies will give you a better, cheaper rate if you can move during non-peak times; Monday through Thursday.

There are other benefits of moving during the week as well. For example:

  • Kids are in school: If you’re only moving locally, keeping the kids in school while you move is a huge plus. It’s simply much less stressful without them around.
  • Neighbors are at work: No need to feel bothered by nosy neighbors. If you move during the week, they’ll be at work. So, you can finally exchange meatloaf and cookies on your own terms.
  • Overall, everyone is busy: Everyone except you and the movers of course. Moving during the week means there is typically fewer people out and about, on the road, and less traffic.
  • You can look forward to the weekend: Don’t sacrifice your weekend moving. Instead of moving during the week gives you the whole week to unpack, organize, clean, and settle; while you can get to know the town and finally enjoy yourself on the weekend.

There are a few disadvantages of moving during the weekdays, though. For example, moving during the week means you most likely have to take time off work, and if you move long distance, you’ll have to pull the kids out of school.

Nonetheless, the amount of time and money you could save by moving anytime Monday through Thursday is definitely worth it.

What are the benefits of hiring professional movers?

In reality, you need more than just a moving truck to move. You need time, boxes, money, extra hands, and sanity for the entire process.

Professional movers might seem like an additional cost to your budget, but hiring them is well worth every cent.

Even for just a local move, professional movers can get the job done like you never could. These are just a few of the benefits of hiring professional movers:

  1. You don’t lift a finger.  This is of course the most obvious reason for hiring movers, in the first place, but it’s true. Would you rather do backbreaking work after working your regular 9:00 to 5:00 just to move and then work some more?
  1. You won’t get hurt. If you don’t lift a finger, you can’t get hurt. Injuries during moving and from not moving properly happen way too often. Don’t risk getting seriously hurt, just leave it to the professionals.
  1. Your move will be more efficient. You can admit it – you’re not the most organized person all the time, which is why moving is even more of a nightmare. By the time you get to your new location, you’re missing all the important stuff, including your left shoe. With professional movers, their only job is to be organized, and they’ll know exactly where that missing shoe is.
  1. Your valuables will be insured. The difference between professional movers and a crew of your best friends? Security. Professionals will have insurance and will be able to keep your belongings safe. That’s more than your friends can promise.
  1. All the packing materials are provided. Think it’s hard enough to find a box big enough to fit that awkwardly shaped vase your great aunt gave you? Or how much do you know about properly packing expensive China? Professional movers come with all the packing materials and they know exactly how to pack all the things you don’t.
  1. You can forget to make multiple trips. If you’re doing a long distance move, the last thing you want to do is make multiple trips. Professional movers are professional for a reason; they won’t leave stuff behind, forget anything, and they know exactly where they’re going.
  1. Your money will be cost-effective. Hiring professional movers does cost, but doesn’t necessarily cost more. In fact, by hiring professionals you get a better bang for your buck because they make your move safer and easier. Don’t risk the oops, uh-ohs, and mistakes of hiring your best friends or cheap, unlicensed movers. When you end up paying more to replace that item they broke, or worse, if they were in an accident while driving the moving truck and were uninsured – you don’t even want to consider those consequences.
  1. You save time. One average estimate is that a team of two movers can pick up a 3-bedroom house in as little as 2 to 3 hours. Since it takes you and your husband at least two weeks to pack up everything in your spare time, after work, and after putting the kids to sleep, 2 to 3 hours seems like a miracle. You don’t have time to spare; let the movers do it for you.

People in the United States move on average, 11 times in their life, so you’ll likely have a move coming up in your future. When you do, leave it to the professionals, you’ll thank us later.

In the table below you’ll find basic ballpark ranges for local and long distance mover pricing. Even the best movers don’t always get their estimates completely accurate. Use the moving estimate calculator form at the top of the page for a more specific breakdown of moving costs.

How much do long distance movers cost?

Long distance moving companies charge by the amount of household goods you’re moving and the distance being traveled. The approximate cost of moving a house long distance can range from $920 up to $15,000+ depending on the size and distance of the move. The best moving companies will give you a free estimate over the phone or through a virtual or in-home walkthrough.

A small one-bedroom will typically weigh around 2,000 pounds and cost anywhere from $900 for a few hundred miles to $3,500+ for a cross-country move. A 2-3 bedroom, 2,000 square foot home will typically weigh 5,000 pounds with approximate costs ranging from $1,900 to $9,000+ depending on the distance.

For example, the cost of moving a 2 bedroom from New York to Florida using a professional moving company will typically range $2,100 to $7,800 for the 1,200 mile move.

The cost of moving a 2 bedroom from New York to California using a professional moving company will typically range $3,200 to $9,700 for the 2,900 mile move.

Other fees like shuttle trucks, specialty packing, crating fragile items, bulky items (pool table), and more can add significant amounts to a moving quote. Moving in or out of less populated areas like Montana or the Dakotas will typically cost more since fewer movers travel to these areas. Popular moving routes will be more competitively priced.

How do I estimate moving costs?

To calculate the cost of a local move, you’ll need to take the Number of Hours estimated to complete the move and multiply that by the Hourly Rate the moving company charges. You may also have to add on additional charges for things like Travel Time, Packing Materials, and Tips for the movers if you so choose.

Estimating the cost of moving long distance to a new home is harder to calculate. We recommend using the moving calculator at the top of the page as a starting point. Here are some major cost factors for intersate moves.

  • Move size – larger moves are more expensive
  • Distance – the longer the distance the more the move will cost
  • Do-it-yourself vs Professional Mover – DIY moving services are usually cheaper but involve more work and stress
  • Time of year – summer pricing is higher because it’s peak season and movers are busy
  • Moving date – moving prices tend to be more affordable middle of the week and middle of the month

Additional moving costs and fees to consider

Moving companies have a lot of additional fees that can come up depending on the details of your move. Below is a list of the biggest costs to consider when estimating the cost of a move.

  • Specialty items – pianos, pool tables, hot tubs, motorcycles, safes, and other bulky items are expensive to move and will add to your overall cost. Companies will usually charge a few hundred dollars additional to haul these “bulky items.”
  • Packing supplies – if a mover has to use bubble wrap, mattress covers, TV boxes, packing paper, or any other packing supplies they will charge you for the supplies. It’s a good idea to coordinate with the moving company ahead of time on which supplies will be needed.
  • Long carry fees – if the mover can’t park their truck within 100-150 feet of your front door they may charge a long carry fee. Depending on the size of the move, long carry fees can add up to several hundred dollars.
  • Stair carry fees – if you have several long staircases to get to your items the moving company may charge a stair carry fee for each additional staircase beyond the first one. Depending on the size of the move, stair carry fees can add up to several hundred dollars.
  • Elevator fees – some movers will charge an elevator fee if your residence is located on a floor that requires a lengthy elevator ride or if your building has a narrow elevator requiring a lot of trips.
  • Unpacking Service – although it’s rarely purchased, you can pay a moving company to unpack all your boxes and put everything away for you. This will typically cost a few hundred dollars for a one-bedroom apartment up to a few thousand dollars for a larger home.
  • Shuttle service – if the moving company has to use a smaller truck to park close to your property, the company will usually charge a shuttle fee to “shuttle” items from the smaller truck to the tractor-trailer. Shuttle fees can be significant.
  • Storage – most moving companies offer the option to store your items. For short term storage, moving companies are a good option. For longer term storage, moving companies are more expensive than storing your items at a local personal storage facility.
  • Extra Stops – need the movers to stop by a local storage unit or your in-law’s house? Movers will typically charge a fee for additional stops beyond the primary residence.
  • Expedited delivery – for an additional cost, movers will agree to expedite your delivery and have your items delivered on or before a specific date.
  • Tipping – moving is a tough job and many customers give their movers tip for the hard work. The amount you should tip movers can vary depending on the move.

How to save money during a move

  • Sell, donate, or trash: downsizing is one of the easiest and most impactful ways to reduce moving costs. The less you move, the less you’ll pay. Take time to consider which items are actually worth moving. Sell, donate, or trash anything not worth moving.
  • Adjust your move date: moving companies charge more during popular times to move. If you can, avoid moving around holidays or near the end of the month. The summer months can also be 20-30% more expensive so if you can avoid a summer move, do it.
  • Get multiple quotes: it’s not unusual for moving company estimates to differ by thousands of dollars, especially if you’re moving long distance. Get at least 3 estimates to ensure you’re getting a fair price on your move.
  • Flexible pickup & delivery: moving is a tough business and movers often face unexpected delays like weather or traffic issues. Customers with flexible move dates enable moving companies to build some cushion into their schedule. Often times resulting in a better price for you.
  • Book early: book your mover 30-60 days in advance. Moving companies will increase prices for moves booked last minute or worst case they may not have any availability at all. If you plan on moving during the summer or around a holiday consider booking 90 days in advance to be safe.
  • Consider DIY moving services: moving companies take a lot of the work out of moving but they also are expensive. “Do-it-yourself” moving options like rental trucks and moving containers can be significantly more affordable if you’re willing to do some of the heavy lifting yourself. If you’re unable to do the heavy lifting that comes with moving, or simply don’t want to, you can always hire labor only moving helpers to assist with the loading and unloading.
  • Ask for price matching: the moving industry is competitive and most companies will have some kind of price matching policy to try and win your business. Don’t be afraid to ask for a price match if you’ve found a cheaper quote elsewhere.
  • Get free packing supplies: when budgeting for a move people frequently overlook the cost of packing supplies. Boxes, packing paper, and tape can all add up to hundreds of dollars of expense. Thing is, a lot of this stuff can be found for free online from people who just finished moving. Check out our article on finding free boxes for a lot more options.
  • Insurance coverage: check with your existing homeowners or renters insurance to see if moving is covered under your policy. If moving is covered you can avoid spending money insuring your items through a moving company.
  • Weight equals money: consider selling or giving away heavy items like fitness equipment and book collections. If you have old appliances moving may be a good time to get rid of them.
  • Cancel services: transfer or cancel all your utilities one to two days after your move date to avoid paying any unnecessary bills.

Yes, you can definitely negotiate with moving companies. Moving companies usually have some discounts or options to lower your quote. You can also bring them quotes from competitors to see if they’ll outbid other companies or offer price matching. How much does insurance cost for a moving company?

The cost of moving insurance will depend on which type of insurance you elect to get and how valuable you declare your items to be. The cost to insure a one bedroom apartment at Full Value Protection will typically cost around $500 to $700 depending on how valuable the items being moved are.

What is the cheapest moving company?

Moving companies are expensive. If budget is your primary concern then you’ll want to consider some alternative options to full-service movers. Luckily, we have an article that lists a ton of cheap ways to move out of state. To give you a few ideas:

  • Moving containers
  • Rental trucks
  • Shipment marketplaces
  • Ship by bus or train
  • Tow behind trailer

Will a moving company move one piece of furniture?

If you’re trying to ship a single piece of furniture like a couch or mattress moving companies will not be your best option. Most moving companies have weight minimums and won’t be interested in shipments this small. Better options for shipping single items include LTL carriers or shipment marketplaces. Check out our list of the best moving companies for single item moves.

How much does it cost to store furniture with a moving company?

Storing your furniture with a moving company is a great way to avoid the hassle of moving everything in and out of storage. The monthly cost to store with a mover will depend on the size of your move. The typical one bedroom apartment move will cost around $90 to $150 a month to store with a moving company. A 3 or 4 bedroom house will cost anywhere from $300 to $700 per month for storage.

Keep in mind, moving companies will store the items in their warehouse so you won’t have access to any items while stored.

How much does it cost to have a moving company pack you?

Full packing services on average cost $900 to $1,500. Packing costs are calculated based on the size of the move. Specialty items like chandeliers or expensive art can significantly increase packing costs.

For example, full packing for a one bedroom apartment will range from $250 to $500. The cost of packing for a 3 bedroom home will range from $1,000 to $1,800 depending on how much is being packed.

One major benefit of having a mover pack all your items for you is insurance. If you pack your boxes they are not covered under the mover’s insurance. But if the mover packs the boxes for you, then the mover will be liable for any damages.

How much should you tip movers?

Many people forget to include the cost of tipping your movers when calculating their move budget. The general rule is to tip movers about five dollars per person for every hour the move takes. So if your move takes five hours, each worker should get a $25 tip at the end.

Tipping certainly isn’t required. And if the movers do a bad job by all means do not tip. But keep in mind how hard lifting furniture all day can be. If the movers do a good job you should tip them.

Do movers charge by weight or volume?

Moving companies can charge by weight or volume but as a general rule of thumb if you haven’t worked with the mover before then it’s best to avoid volume (cubic footage) based estimates. We recommend weight-based, binding estimates because they can be verified by the Department of Transportation. Most of the national van line moving companies like Mayflower Transit charge by weight. For more info, we’ve also written a full article on weight vs cubic footage estimates.

How do I get the best deal on movers?

The best way to ensure you’re getting a good price on your move is to get at least 3-4 estimates from reputable moving companies with years of experience in the industry. Similar to airlines, moving company pricing can vary drastically from company to company and prices are always changing.

In order to compare estimates fairly, you’ll also want to make sure every company lists the same details. The item list, weight, volume, packing requirements, and any other details should be listed on every quote so you can be sure you’re making an apples-to-apples comparison.

How much does international moving cost?

International move pricing is complicated and prices can range from $1,000 to $20,000 depending on the countries involved, the size of the move, and whether you ship by land, sea, or air.

For example, moving a one bed apartment from New York City to Paris by sea shipping will cost $5,400 to $7,400. Moving a one bedroom from New York City to Sydney will cost $6,700 to $9,100.

For accurate international move pricing, we recommend getting a free quote from the companies on our best international movers list.

Can you expense moving costs?

Short answer, no. The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act made moving expenses no longer tax-deductible except for active military members. Depending on the state you live in, moving costs may still be deductible on your state tax return.

How much should I budget for moving expenses?

The average person will spend roughly $10,000 on moving related expenses during a move. This includes things like hiring a mover, buying packing supplies, replacing furniture, paying security and utility deposits, and the million other expenses that come up while moving.

Obviously, the amount you need to budget for moving really depends on your situation. If you’re moving a big house long distance, your moving budget may be way higher than $10,000. If you’re moving a studio apartment across town, you may be able to get away with only spending a couple of hundred bucks to move.

What is the average cost of a “do-it-yourself” move?

If you’re willing to do all the heavy lifting and driving you can usually save yourself a good chunk of change on the total cost of the move. You’ll also have more control over the moving process which some people prefer.

The two main DIY options are rental trucks and moving containers. Let’s take a quick look at the estimated costs for each option.

How much does it cost to rent a portable storage container?

Moving containers are like a portable storage unit that can be delivered to your house, loaded, and then shipped or stored locally or long distance. This “DIY move” option does not include labor or any packing services. Although, you can hire local movers to help with the loading as an additional service.

The average total cost to move within 50 miles with a portable moving container is typically around $400 to $700 for one container. For local moves, most companies charge a fee every time you move the container. The typical move involves 3 container charges: a drop-off fee, a transfer fee, and a pick-up fee. If you plan on moving the container more than 3 times, costs can add up quickly.

For interstate moves, average moving container prices can range from $900 to $4500+ depending on the distance and size of the move. Generally, the longer the distance, the more expensive things get. If the company doesn’t have a nearby location at your destination, that can also ramp up the price. Ideally, find a company that has nearby locations on both ends of your move.

Most portable storage companies, such as PODS, offer 30 days of free storage included in PODS pricing. Container sizes range from 7 feet long up to 20 feet. Larger containers will cost more to rent and move. If you’re moving to a large home, it’s likely you’ll need more than one container which can add significantly to your overall cost.

Moving containers are a good option for moves requiring storage. Check out our list of the best moving container companies to get price quotes.

How much do moving truck rentals cost?

The average price for a local moving truck rental can range anywhere from $30 to $500 Depending on the size of the truck and the duration of the rental. For instance, Budget Truck Rental typically charges $20-$60 per day as their base rate to rent a truck.

The average price for a one-way moving truck rental can range from $200-$300 if you’re moving a few hundred miles to $2,000 – $4,000+ if you’re moving cross-country. Long distance move truck rental rates are based on the distance between locations and the size of the rental truck you need. Rates typically include a set number of allowable miles and days.

For instance, if you’re moving long distance from New York to California, the rental truck rate would most likely include around 3,200 miles for driving and 6-8 days rental time. Additional rental days and mileage can be purchased for a fee.

Another, major cost you’ll want to calculate ahead of time is fuel. Moving rental trucks typically get on average 8-12 miles per gallon depending on the size of the truck and whether it’s full or empty with home goods. For example, a fully loaded 26-foot rental truck is likely to get no more than 7 or 8 miles per gallon, while an empty 10-foot truck will get closer to 12 to 15 MPG. Fuel costs can easily add up to hundreds of dollars.

How much do long-distance movers cost?

\n

If you need to move farther than across town, long-distance moving companies can help. Many long-distance movers can drive your belongings across the state or country for you. These moves are often priced per cubic foot, with total mileage affecting the cost.

\n

Long-distance moving costs:

\n

\n

\n

\n

\n

\n

\n

National average cost $100/hour
Low-end cost range $75-$95/hour
High-end cost range $105-$150/hour

More variables can affect your moving costs when you’re trekking from coast to coast instead of from town to town. In addition to the size of the move, distance plays a major role in long-distance moving costs, as companies must account for fuel costs and driving time of their workers.

Office moving costs

\n

For office moves, the average total cost is $290 and reaches as high as $850. On an hourly basis, office movers charge $75 to $149.

\n

Piano moving costs

\n

Piano moving costs range from $300-$400. The cost of moving a piano will vary depending on your location and any obstacles such as stairs. The pro piano movers should set it back up and tune it to your liking in your new location.

\n

Pool table moving costs

\n

National pool table moving costs can range between $200 and $600, but you’re more likely to end up with a perfectly reassembled table that’s completely level.

\n

For example, Beck’s Billiards of Glendale, Arizona, charges $239 to move a 7-foot table, $249 for an 8-foot table and $299 for a 9-foot table. Mileage and stairs may incur extra fees.

\n

Hot tub moving costs

\n

Moving a hot tub costs an average of $350-$450. Hot tub movers charge an hourly rate of $200/hour.

\n

Moving a hot tub can be a pain. Fortunately, there are movers who know how to dismantle and move hot tubs from place to place.

\n

Exclusive direct transport vs.

consolidated moves

\n

How you want your belongings moved will also affect your long-distance moving costs. The two main types of long-distance moves are consolidated moves and exclusive direct transport moves. Consolidated moves are more affordable; exclusive moves, as their name implies, are more expensive.

\n

In a consolidated move, your belongings will be picked up and transported with the goods of other clients of that moving company. Typically, consolidated moving costs are calculated per cubic foot. Using cubic feet allows the moving companies to determine the amount of room your belongings take up in their moving trucks and charge you accordingly. When you opt for a consolidated move, your belongings will be scheduled to arrive anywhere from a few days to two weeks. In one example of consolidated long-distance moving costs, Brooklyn-based Simply Moving & Storage estimates a fee of approximately $2,000 for a consolidated move of a standard one- or two-bedroom house on the East Coast.

\n

If you choose an exclusive direct transport move, the total cost will be higher. However, you’ll have control over the arrival date, and yours will be the only belongings in the moving truck. Exclusive moves cost more because you’re paying the entirety of the fuel and labor costs, instead of those costs being divided among the other clients whose belongings are on the same truck. Simply Moving & Storage, which is based on the East Coast, says that a recent exclusive move they did from New York to Florida cost $5,500, while another exclusive move they did from New York to California cost $16,000.

\n

Choosing an exclusive move can be a good idea if you have high-value items that need special attention, or if you just need to have your items by a specific date.

\n

What services do moving companies offer?

\n

Both local moving and long-distance moving companies provide a range of services to make your life much easier during what is a notoriously stressful time. Which service level you choose will depend on your budget and how much assistance you need.

\n

For example, simple moving services might just include helping someone unload a truck full of items into a storage unit. Or, you can hire a company to pack boxes for you if you need a few extra sets of hands.

\n

Meanwhile, a full-service move can include boxing or packing up a home, loading, moving, unloading and unpacking. Full-service movers cost more, but it saves you time — which for many people equals money. So, spending more on a full-service move might save you money by freeing up precious spare time for work, family or much-needed rest.

\n

Here’s a closer look at the different types of moving services and some examples of how much each service can cost.

\n

\n

Packing services

\n

The national average cost of packing and unpacking is $404. When movers are hired for only packing, loading and unpacking, the costs will be less than if a moving truck is also requested. Moving companies may charge for packing by the hour or by the box. The cost of packing can vary by geographic region and by the type of moving boxes you need.

\n

Moving companies often have various prices for different types of boxes. For example, china or glassware could be an average of $18 per box, linens $10 per box and books $5 per box. Specialty moving boxes, such as \”wardrobe\” boxes with a hanging rod inside, will also cost more.

\n

For example, Elite Moving San Diego Inc. charges $3 for a small moving box, $4 for a medium-sized moving box, $5 for a large moving box and $8 for a dish-pack moving box. Packing labor costs are not included in any of those box prices. Simply Moving & Storage in Brooklyn, New York, charges $5 per book box, $10 per linen box and $18 per glassware box, including the cost of labor for packing the box.

\n

Local moving companies may be able to provide ballpark estimates of how much it will cost to pack your home. Here’s a past rough estimate for packing charges based on Elite Moving San Diego Inc. ‘s experience with previous customers:

\n

Standard vs. full-service movers cost

\n

Hiring a full-service moving company might be your best option if you’re too busy or need extra help with your move. Full-service moving typically includes:

\n

  • A moving truck and moving boxes
  • \n

  • Labor for packing household items into boxes
  • \n

  • Loading boxes into the moving truck
  • \n

  • Driving boxes and furniture to the new location
  • \n

  • Unloading boxes into the new home
  • \n

Unpacking items from boxes in your new home is generally not included but may be available for an additional cost.

\n

Full-service moving companies typically request that you be present the day of packing and moving, although other arrangements can sometimes be made for people who are traveling.

\n

The cost of local full-service moving is greater than for standard moving services, but the payoff comes in the free time you have not spent packing up all your possessions.

\n

Cost to move a 3-bedroom house:

\n

\n

\n

\n

\n

Standard moving service cost \n

$500-$1,000

\n

Full-service movers cost \n

$1,000-$1,500

\n

With a standard move, your boxes are packed and ready to go the day the movers come. When they arrive, you can step back and let them do the heavy lifting. They’ll also drive your belongings across town and unload them for you in your new place.

\n

Standard local moves are attractive for the price savings they offer, as well as providing more control for people who want their items packed in a specific way.

\n

Here are examples of average costs for a standard move and a full-service move from Texas Elite Moving:

\n

A full-service move for a three-bedroom house: $500-$1,000. This cost includes three people packing for approximately four hours and five or six hours of loading, moving and unloading time.

\n

Standard moving service for a three-bedroom house: $1,000-$1,500. This cost includes three people and five or six hours of loading, moving and unloading time.

\n

Specialty moving

\n

Delicate and oversize items, like your pool table or baby grand piano, require special handling. There may be an additional charge for moving these items, as technical expertise is important for safely transporting them without damage.

\n

If you have lots of unusual items, you may require special assistance in moving them to ensure their safety and want a moving quote that covers those items. Specifically, if you have a pool table or baby grand piano, improper moving can do real damage to their delicate components. Unless your local moving company is specially trained to move pool tables or baby grand pianos, it may be wise to hire a specialist.

\n

In addition to specialty items, some companies may have additional charges (beyond their hourly rate) for disassembling and reassembling furniture or moving extremely heavy items. Communicate clearly with your movers beforehand, and let them know what needs to be moved to prevent any confusion on move-out/move-in day. Keep in mind that auxiliary tasks that require extra work may increase costs and ask for these to be itemized in your moving estimate.

\n

[CTA4]

\n

Storage

\n

If you choose to store your belongings with a self-storage company, your costs might be cheaper or more expensive than storing your items with a moving company. However, your moving company may offer storage at reduced rates if you bundle their storage services and moving services at the same time.

\n

What factors affect moving costs?

\n

Before hiring a mover, keep these moving cost factors in mind — they could affect how much you’ll pay for movers.

\n

Hourly rates vs. flat-rates

\n

Most often, movers charge by the hour. However, you might find flat-rate movers in your area. It’s often recommended that you hire flat-rate movers if:

\n

  • You’re moving long distance
  • \n

  • Your home is big and you have a lot of items to move
  • \n

  • There’s a lot of traffic between your old home and new home
  • \n

If you decide to hire a flat-rate movers, it’s important to ask if the rate is truly flat — or if you will have to pay additional fees for things like moving furniture up the stairs or transporting specialty items (e.g. piano, pool table, packing, assembling furniture, etc.).

\n

\n

Number of movers

\n

The cost to hire professional local movers is often calculated on an hourly rate, which can increase as more movers or moving trucks are needed. Your geographic location will also affect your hourly rate.

\n

Often, cities with a higher cost of living have higher local moving rates than smaller cities with a lower cost of living, which accounts for higher costs of doing business, such as workers’ comp, insurance and labor. For example, Elite Moving San Diego, Inc. charges an hourly rate that increases with each additional mover you require. Two movers are $105 per hour, three movers are $135 per hour and four movers are $155 per hour.

\n

Texas Elite Moving, based in Dripping Springs, Texas, has estimated hourly rates that vary based on the number of movers and trucks. Its hourly rates also account for furniture assembly and disassembly as needed. The company’s trucks arrive with premium quilted moving pads and shrink-wrap to protect items, and the movers use equipment and dollies to maximize efficiency.

\n

Individual job prices will always depend on your circumstances, so for exact quotes, it’s important to communicate directly with the moving company you plan to hire. Here are the  average estimated base hourly moving rates for Texas Elite Moving:

\n

\n

\n

\n

\n

\n

\n

\n

\n

2 movers, 1 truck $100/hour
3 movers, 1 truck $145/hour
4 movers, 1 truck $190/hour
4 movers, 2 truck $200/hour

Also, keep in mind that service fees may apply when booking a company’s moving services.

\n

Number of rooms in your home

\n

In general, the larger the house, the higher the moving cost. Seasoned movers often can provide a ballpark number for moving costs based on the number and type of rooms in a house. However, your home might be different, and that’s why most moving companies will need to do a site visit to provide you with a true estimate for services.

\n

Home size is not always an indicator of how many belongings a person has. For example, you and your partner may have more items in your two-bedroom apartment than a single person has in a three-bedroom home.

\n

Stairs and other obstacles

\n

Other factors that may affect your hourly rate are logistical challenges such as stairs or steep driveways, or having many fragile items that require extremely delicate handling.

\n

Anything that makes the move take longer or that demands more physical exertion on the part of the movers can increase the cost. Stairs at the initial move site or the new destination can increase moving costs because they require more work for movers and present more risk of injury or damage. Narrow passageways, steep driveways, lack of parking out front, and the presence or absence of elevators are other factors that can influence your local moving costs.

\n

How movers charge for obstacles may depend on the company. Some moving companies have set rates for stairs, such as $50 to $70 per flight of stairs. If you live on a top floor and the moving company has to transport all of your belongings down in the elevator, they may have a one-time fee, such as $75 to $100.

\n

During your initial call with the movers, it’s important to provide as many details as possible. This allows them to provide you with the most accurate estimate and to ensure the safest and most efficient move for your belongings. They’ll be able to bring any special necessary equipment needed to navigate the obstacles or maneuver furniture in tight places.

\n

Distance of your move

\n

Travel may affect the price of local moving costs. Some companies don’t charge mileage unless the distance is over 50 miles, while others do.

\n

For example, Texas Elite Moving’s base local moving fee is $100 per hour, and the company does not charge for mileage if the distance covered is under 50 miles. Beyond 50 miles, however, a mileage fee applies. Your moving date could also affect travel costs with moves over the holidays or during peak season (typically summer in most areas) costing more.

\n

Companies have to take distance into account to ensure they’re meeting their costs for the time that driving can require, the cost of fuel for large moving trucks, and the cost of upkeep on their moving trucks. Confirm how distance is handled in the contract before signing.

\n

How do you calculate how much it will cost to move?

\n

You’ll need to determine the following in order to calculate your moving costs:

\n

  • The distance of your move. Write down the total mileage to estimate gas costs and truck rental rates if you’re DIY-ing your move. If you’re moving locally (within a 50 mile radius or so) and want to hire a professional, your costs may be determined by the time it takes to get to point A to point B instead of your total load size. But if you’re moving long distance or across the country, you may be charged by load size. Generally, local moves will cost less than long-distance moves.
  • \n

  • Load and size. Find out how much your items might weigh. The more goods you have to move, the heavier your load, the more movers you’ll need to hire, the longer it will take to pack and load your truck — and the higher your moving costs will be.
  • \n

  • Cost of moving and packing supplies. Make a list of the supplies you’ll need (moving boxes, rental truck, packing tape, dollies, bubble wrap, etc.), and get a rough estimate of how much it will cost to buy these items online or at stores near you.
  • \n

  • Extra moving and packing services. Identify whether you’ll need professional packing assistance, storage, a moving container or freight trailer, car shipping services and more. Get cost estimates for each additional service.
  • \n

  • Get professional estimates. Once you’ve identified the information above, reach out to at least three moving companies and services in your area. Give them the information about your move so that they can calculate prices and give you an accurate quote.
  • \n

How much should you tip full service movers?

\n

An easy rule of thumb for local moves is to tip your movers 5 to 10 percent of the total bill. Tipping 5 percent is reasonable for standard local moves where the pros are in and out in a half-day. Tipping 10 percent can be appropriate when the movers are also packing your boxes and had a long workday.

\n

Tips can be split up among all the movers, but many companies recommend you give the tip directly to each worker — not only to recognize their effort but also to ensure that each one receives their share.

\n

However, you’re not required to provide a tip. But remember: it is a much-appreciated gesture for a job well done.

\n

\n

How to save money when moving

\n

Packing all boxes ahead of time is a big cost saver. Having all your boxes well organized and labeled (on all sides of the box) also make packing and unpacking easier. And if you’re paying by the hour, this saves you cash.

\n

When gathering boxes to pack for your move, be sure to find ones strong enough for the task. Moving boxes provided by moving companies have double walls that can support the weight of other boxes and furniture stacked on top of them. If you use single-wall boxes, the sides could crumble, damaging your goods inside.

\n

Disassembling furniture is another way to save money. Pro movers will usually disassemble furniture for you, but if you’re able to take things apart yourself, it can cut back on the number of labor hours you pay for.

\n

\n

Moving mistakes to avoid

\n

Moving can be stressful, and it’s easy to make mistakes. Unfortunately, these mistakes can end up costing you money or wasting your precious time.

\n

The experts at Texas Elite Moving have tips for you to have the most successful move possible. They’ve moved thousands of families, and these are the most common mistakes they encounter:

\n

  • Not downsizing before the move. Going through your belongings before you pack them allows you to donate or sell items you don’t want. Otherwise, you’re paying someone to pack and move unwanted stuff for you.
  • \n

  • Only partially packing boxes. If your moving boxes aren’t filled to the top, you lose out on moving space and risk damaging items inside when they get bounced around.
  • \n

  • Using the wrong sized boxes. Don’t fill large boxes with books or other heavy items. The movers, and your belongings, are more likely to get hurt when improper packing occurs.
  • \n

  • Not being ready when the movers arrive. If you’re paying for standard moving services, you’re likely paying by the hour. If you don’t pack and organize your belongings, that means more work for the movers — and more money you have to pay. Make sure you’re packed and ready to go on moving day.
  • \n

  • Unlabeled boxes. Label each side of each box with a description of the box’s contents. At a minimum, label one end and one side of each box. This protects your more delicate belongings during the move and helps you find things when you unpack.
  • \n

  • No room labels on the boxes. On each side of each box, mark which room you want that box to go in the new home. This helps the movers unload the boxes into the right rooms, making your life far easier when it’s time to unpack.
  • \n

  • Mixing up boxes. If you’re putting some items in storage and some items in your new home, label each box very clearly. Use flag tape (from any big-box store) in two separate colors to indicate which furniture and boxes go to your home and the storage facility.
  • \n

How to hire movers

Hiring a trustworthy team that will get the job done safely and efficiently is no easy task. But if you follow these steps, you’ll likely have an easier time finding a reputable moving company:

\n

  1. Start by reading customer reviews. Look for clues as to the company’s punctuality, safety and successful completion of jobs.
  2. \n

  3. Ask for quotes from a few local movers to find a reliable company with a price you can afford. Be wary of any company that offers you a price that seems too good to be true.
  4. \n

  5. Verify that the mover or moving company is licensed and insured in the state where you hire them to avoid financial loss in the long run. You can verify their license number with your state’s regulating body. Shane Harris of Texas Elite Moving explains that licensing and insurance hold the company accountable for damages or losses. He also recommends that you be clear on the damage policy before signing a contract. Homeowners and renters insurance usually does not cover your belongings while they are in transit for a move. This is why it’s critical to hire a local moving company that has an insurance and liability policy that will cover you in case of any accidents.
  6. \n

  7. Ask about the moving company’s hiring process, including whether they perform background checks on their employees and whether they hire day laborers or have full-time, trained moving staff.
  8. \n

  9. Be wary of movers who ask for a full fee upfront. When you hire movers, you may pay a deposit to secure a date and time. But, it’s a red flag if a company requests payment in full before they’ve rendered services.
  10. \n

Be sure you have a written contract and a non-binding estimate before hiring movers. Joy Hall of Joyful Movers in Cary, North Carolina explains that you’ll fill out a bill of lading (BOL) before the move takes place, which will outline all the charges and fees associated with your move and the valuation of your belongings on the BOL. If there is any uncertainty about pricing, clarify before signing the BOL.

Video transcript: How much do movers cost?

\n

\”The typical price range for hiring movers just depends on what type of service that you’re looking to get. Perhaps you’re looking to get load and unload, [which] will typically run you somewhere between $80 to $120 an hour for two movers and moving truck. If you’re looking for labor-only assistance, that could run you somewhere between $40 to $100 an hour.

\n

So, we determine the hourly rate based off of the size of the home [and] how many boxes that they’re looking to move.

\n

Things that do cost extra when hiring movers [are] covers for your beds — that often won’t occur an extra cost — as well as boxes. If you require boxes for your move and packing services, we often ask individuals to purchase those things just because they’ll save them a lot more money.

\n

We’ve done enough moves to understand how long a move will typically take … If you have a five- or seven-bedroom home, you’ll save more money and time — mostly time — going with more movers than less movers. Because two movers to move a five-bedroom house will take probably two days, whereas if you had a six- or seven-man crew — very solid crew, enough equipment and trucks — you can have them knocked out in one day within five to eight hours.\”

Additional Moving Costs

Though the majority of expenses are determined by the size of the move, distance traveled, and hours needed to finish the job, there are other factors that will affect the cost of moving you should consider. Some of these include:

Travel Expenses

No matter how far you’re going, expect to pay travel expenses. This includes fuel costs, food and water on the road and lodging during a long-distance move. Depending on your move, you may also need temporary pet boarding or car shipping services.

Moving Add-Ons

When you hire professional movers, keep in mind that add-ons like furniture assembly services and moving insurance, will cost more. Another common add-on is specialty item moving, like for pianos, pool tables and safes. You can find experienced movers ready to load and unload all of your oversized items with Moving Help® – Powered by U-Haul.

Self-Storage

It’s common for downsizing families to use self-storage after their move. This allows you to keep unused furniture, clothing and other belongings safely stored while not in use. If you’re interested in storage, some U-Haul locations offer one free month of storage with the reservation of a one-way truck or trailer.

Moving Supplies

Cardboard boxes, packing tape, stretch wrap, etc. These may be small, but they add up quickly. You may be able to score some used boxes from friends and family, but other items may need purchasing. Check U-Haul® Customer Connect for free or low-cost supplies, and use the U-Haul® Moving Supply Calculator to get an approximate supply list.

Move-Out Fees

If renting, check your lease agreement to see if you’re responsible for any move-out fees. This may include carpet cleaning charges or early lease termination fees (if applicable). You may also want to check if you will be getting your security deposit back. It will come in handy! Find a Moving Help Service Provider who also offers home cleaning services, to get your moving and cleaning needs taken care of all in one reservation.

Extra Bills

Cancellation and activation fees for your utilities, internet, cable and other services can quickly pile up. Try to find out what you’re responsible for well ahead of time so you can budget accordingly.

Professional Packing

Professional movers typically offer packing services in additional to loading and unloading. This can be especially useful for with fragile items you might worry about in transit. Moving Help Service Providers who offer packing can ensure that every inch of your U-Haul rental truck is packed securely, leaving no wasted space.

Tipping

Don’t forget to tip! Although it’s not mandatory, professional movers are service industry pros and appreciate being tipped after a job well done. For a smaller job, 10-15% is common, while larger jobs call for a tip closer to 15-20%.

How Much Does It Cost to Hire Movers in 2022?

How much does it cost to hire local movers?

Local movers charge by the hour, so based on average local moving costs, hiring 2 men and a truck will cost you between $90 and $120 per hour. When moving in town, moving labor only (without the moving truck) will cost about $60 to $80 per hour.

Every single dollar counts regardless of whether you’re moving locally or across the country.

Depending on where you live – state and metro area – moving rates and overall local moving costs will vary.

You will be charged an hourly rate for the time movers spent working on your move. This hourly rate applies regardless of whether the movers are wrapping, loading, or driving from point A to point B.

Travel fees may also apply depending on the pickup location. In many cases, this fee could be negotiated between the moving company and the client depending on the travel distance to the customer moving location.

You may also be charged for packing materials. Make sure you keep this in mind when you ask your mover to estimate your moving costs. You can use our local moving cost calculator form on the top of the page to calculate the cost of the entire move.

Of course, the size of your home does matter when calculating the cost of local moving. Taking into account the average charge of around $60 per hour per mover, here are the approximate costs when hiring local movers:

  • Studio apartment: $480 / 4 hours. Moving out of a studio apartment with the help of 2 local movers will cost you around $480 if the entire loading, transportation, and unloading operations are completed within 4 hours.
  • 1-bedroom: $480 / 4 hours. Moving locally from a 1-bedroom apartment should cost around $480 if 2 movers complete the move in approximately 4 hours.
  • 2-bedroom: $1,080 / 6 hours. Moving out of a 2-bedroom apartment or house (approximately 1,000 square feet) should cost you approximately $1,080 if 3 local movers complete the local relocation job in 6 hours.
  • 3-bedroom: $1,680 / 7 hours. If you’re moving out of a 3-bedroom apartment or house (roughly 2,000 square feet), expect to pay around $1,680 for a local moving crew of 4 members who manage to finish the local move in about 7 hours.
  • 4-bedroom: $2,160 / 9 hours. When moving out of a 4-bedroom home, you should expect to pay approximately $2,160 for a team of 4 local movers working on your move for 9 hours.

If your home is larger than the above examples, then the moving price can go up significantly. Still, your best option to get a better idea of how much local movers cost is to use the local cost calculation tool we offer so that you can set your moving budget accordingly.

Speaking of your moving budget, let’s not forget the additional local moving costs which you should be ready to cover:

In most cases, be ready to pay an extra $60 for each additional professional helper you hire.

Most local moving companies will gladly offer you the extra service of packing and unpacking of your household items. If you decide to take advantage of that offer, expect to be charged around $60 per hour for the additional service. In the majority of cases, you won’t need to pay extra for the packing materials as they are usually pre-included in the price.

If you’re happy with the way your local movers handled your move, you may as well reward their efforts by offering them appropriate tips. Tipping movers is always appreciated and is a good way of saying, Great job, guys!

As a rule of thumb, tipping for local moving goes around $5 per mover per hour. Of course, you can always tip your local movers more if you’re really satisfied with their job.

Just don’t ever commit the rookie mistake of giving the lump sum to one person (usually the foreman) – instead, hand each crew member their share.

Complete Guide to Hiring Local Movers

How much does it cost to hire long-distance movers?

The shipment weight, the distance to your home, and any extra services will form the long-distance moving cost. Expect to pay an average of $0.70 to have 1 pound of household goods moved to a place located 1,000 miles away. This approximate price does NOT include additional services.

In order to provide more accurate price estimation, most professional movers will do an in-house inspection to calculate the costs and assess the risks.

Yes, long-distance costs are calculated by weight or in some rare relocation cases – by the cubic foot of the items for transportation.

Most cross-country moving companies will charge you based on the weight of your shipment and the distance to your new home but will most likely charge you for a number of additional services and various fees as well – see below for more information.

It’s important to know that long-distance moves are calculated on a case-by-case basis because the moving price depends on too many factors. To learn your moving cost beforehand, you need to request an in-house estimate. Then, a company representative will visit your home, assess the move-related situation carefully, and then give you an accurate moving estimate.

There’s no better way to have your long-distance moving costs estimated than to contact a few top-rated cross-country movers and ask them for on-site estimates. Having a binding estimate will guarantee to some extent that the final long-distance moving cost will not exceed the estimated amount.

Rule out any moving company that will not give you a visual estimate, and insist on binding or not-to-exceed estimates.

CAUTION: Should you happen to receive a price estimate that is way lower than the rest, proceed with caution as that could be a sign of moving fraud. Read our Moving Fraud Prevention Guide to stay out of trouble.

Now, take a look at these approximate moving costs to get an idea about the cost of your cross-country move:

  • Studio / 1-bedroom: $1,500 – $3,200. Moving out of a studio apartment or a 1-bedroom home (approximate weight of goods: 1,800-3,200 lbs., distance to the new home: 1,000 miles) should cost between $1,500 and $3,200.
  • 2-bedroom: $3,500 – $5,200. Moving out of a 2-bedroom home (approximate weight of goods: 5,000-6,000 lbs., distance to the new home: 1,000 miles) should cost somewhere in the range of $3,500 – $5,200.
  • 3-bedroom: $6,300 – $7,800. Moving out of a 3-bedroom home (approximate weight of goods: 9,000 lbs., distance to the new home: 1,000 miles) should cost around $6,300 – $7,800.
  • 4-bedroom: $8,000+. Moving out of a 4-bedroom home to a place that’s located approximately 1,000 miles away should cost you around $8,000 and more depending on other factors as well.

Remember that all these example prices are only approximate. To learn how much you will have to pay for the professional moving services you hire, your best bet is to request on-site surveys from reputable movers, followed by the issuance of accurate price estimates.

Let’s summarize the above-mentioned average moving costs according to the size of your house or apartment so that you get a clearer picture of how much movers cost in your case.

Hire Movers or Do It Yourself: 10 Questions to Help You Decide

How much does it cost to hire movers for a one-bedroom apartment?

How much will your move cost?

Local movers charge around $60 per hour per mover. It should take 2 movers roughly 4 hours to move a 1-bedroom apartment locally, so about $480 for labor only.

When moving long distance, the price can jump to $1,500 – $3,200 for an average weight of 3,000 lbs.

The household items in 1-bedroom apartments weigh approximately 2,200 lbs. to 3,200 lbs., but the things you decide to move out from your 1-bedroom apartment may weigh much less or much more than the specified average weight.

To save big money from the upcoming transportation costs, you must inventory your entire home and reduce the number of your possessions only to the absolute minimum.

Downsize! Every additional item you choose to take with you will cost you extra money.

What’s the price to hire movers for a two-bedroom apartment?

Local moving companies charge around $60 per hour per mover. It should take 3 movers roughly 6 hours to move a 2-bedroom apartment locally, so about $1,080 for labor alone.

When moving long distance, the price can reach $3,500 – $5,200 for an average weight of 5,000 lbs.

The household items in 2-bedroom apartments weigh somewhere between 5,000 lbs. and 6,000 lbs., but a single specialty item may tilt the scales one way or another – for example, having to move a piano.

To avoid finding yourself with too little time to react accordingly, you must start packing up your home as early as possible. Start with the rooms that are the hardest ones to sort out and pack (storage areas, kitchen), and then work your way towards the easiest rooms to pack (bathroom, bedroom).

How much does it cost to hire movers for a 3-bedroom house?

Short-distance movers charge around $60 per hour per mover. It should take 4 movers roughly 7 hours to move a 3-bedroom house locally, which is about $1,680 for labor alone.

When moving cross country, the cost can go around $6,300 – $7,800 for an average weight of 9,000 lbs.

Please note that your belongings may weigh more or less than the above estimates. It’s a good idea to ask the moving company to be present when the moving truck is being weighed on a certified scale. Household goods in 3-bedroom houses can easily amount to up to 9,000 pounds in weight.

As mentioned above, save money by purging your home of any items which you no longer want and will not need in the foreseeable future. If you haven’t used an item in more than a year, then get rid of it right then and there.

How Much Does It Cost to Move an Apartment?

It’s really hard to calculate the exact relocation cost when you hire a professional moving company for your local or interstate move. And yet, it’s very useful to have a good idea of how your moving budget will be affected by this life-changing event.

Here are the most important additional costs you may incur when you hire a professional mover:

Packing

Packing on your own can save you a good amount of money. However, specialty items can easily prove too much for you.

How much does it cost to hire movers to pack for you?

Local movers charge about $60 per hour for the extra service of packing up your home. For long-distance moves, full-service movers and packers will quote you a fixed price depending on the size of your home, and the number and nature of the items you want to move.

To save money, you are advised to pack whatever you can by yourself or to ask a bunch of good friends to help you pack your stuff. To save even more money, you should seriously consider finding free moving boxes and, whenever possible, using alternative materials to packing paper and bubble wrap.

That’s right – packing on your own will let you lower the moving costs but make sure you assess the situation properly because specialty items or extra fragile or expensive possessions should be left for experienced professional packers.

How much does it cost to hire packers?

Extra fees and charges

Movers are known to charge their customers for a variety of special circumstances that may be presented in a move. For example, if you have too many heavy or bulky items for moving, your moving company can charge you extra for their laborious handling.

Also, you are expected to pay a long carry fee if the distance between your front door and the moving truck is greater, or even an elevator fee if your hired laborers are forced to go up and down many flights of stairs due to the lack of an elevator (or a non-operational one).

Want to have an extra pick-up along the route to your new home? It’s called an extra stop charge.

Need to have your items placed in storage before they are delivered to your new place? Here’s a storage fee for your delayed delivery. Depending on your specific requirements and needs, be mentally and financially ready to pay extra for each additional service you request from your movers.

Hidden Moving Costs and Expenses When Hiring Movers

Moving insurance

Research well your insurance options when getting ready to move out of your home.

You will receive basic protection for your household goods the minute you sign your moving contract. The good news is that you don’t have to pay for the so-called Basic Limited Liability Protection. The bad news is that its coverage of 60 cents per pound per article is, in most cases, simply unacceptable.

Discuss with your mover other reasonable options of coverage for your items, including purchasing proper moving insurance through them. Alternatively, you can contact a third-party insurance company and arrange adequate insurance for your valuable possessions.

Major factors that affect the cost to hire a moving company

Fancy cutting down your moving costs the way you like it?

As you already know, the price to hire movers will depend on several major factors. The thing is that the better you understand the principal factors that influence the moving cost, the more control you will have over the price of moving.

In other words, you’ll be able to cut your moving costs and expenses.

  • Size of your move. The more things you wish to move to the new home, the more money you’ll pay for their transportation. Moving out of a studio is very different from moving out of a 3-bedroom apartment in terms of the sheer number of household items.
Save money by moving only the things you really love and will need in the future.
  • Special items. Your choice to move any specialty items between will increase the moving cost, sometimes by a lot. If you wish to move a piano to the new home, you’re going to have to hire the services of experienced piano movers.
Hire specialty movers when you’re also moving antique furniture, a pool table, a hot tub, a heavy safe, a grandfather clock, and so on.
  • Move distance. The greater the distance between the two locations, the costlier your move will be.
  • Extra services. Each add-on service that you request from your moving company will cost you extra money. As you can guess, packing is the most frequent additional moving service and the good news is that you can and should pack most of your things by yourself to save money when moving.
  • Packing supplies. If you choose to pack up your things by yourself, then you should know that the cost of the necessary packing materials can inflate substantially the final moving cost.
Get free moving boxes to reduce the packing costs.
  • Move date. The date of your move can influence the cost to hire a moving company. How? In general, moving during the peak moving season (May – September) is more expensive than moving during the off-peak season when fewer people want to move house due to winter.
  • Insurance. When moving valuable items, do consider purchasing adequate coverage for your prized possessions. Speak with your moving company about your viable insurance options.
  • Extra fees and charges. Discuss with your movers what extra fees you’re likely to get charged when you hire their services. All of those extra charges must be included in the cost estimate you receive.

How Much Does It Cost to Move a Piano?

how much do they earn in America on average from unloading and moving work

America

Zagraninfo

When moving overseas and looking for work, everyone pursues their own goals. For some, this is an opportunity to earn money and return to their homeland, while others are thinking about how to stay there and gain a foothold. Despite the fact that the salary of a loader in the United States is not so high in comparison with other specialties, and this work can hardly be classified as prestigious, many of our compatriots are looking for just such vacancies. What earnings should be expected and what conditions should be taken into account when looking for a job?

Responsibilities and how to get a job

Before talking about how to become a loader, it should be noted that there are many different options within this profession. As part of the performance of his duties, the loader may use manual machinery or heavy equipment to move cargo between transport storage facilities or vehicles. At the same time, it is necessary to observe all safety regulations when loading and unloading.

It will be your responsibility to check the time of arrival and departure of goods, as well as enter the relevant information from the documents into the computer system. For example, you examine a bill of lading to determine if all the contents of a shipment are present and create detailed inventory lists. Other duties may include packing, labeling and shipping outbound shipments.

To become a US warehouse mover, you are required to have:

  • a high school diploma or GED certificate;
  • sufficient physical strength to lift and move goods and other loads during your shift;
  • Sometimes it is also necessary to pass a background check.

Often the salary of a loader in America depends on additional skills and ability to handle loading equipment.

If you work in a warehouse, you often get a promotion by being certified to operate a forklift or other heavy equipment. Jobs involving heavier equipment, such as a crane to load a shipping container onto a ship, often require several years of experience in the warehousing industry. However, employers usually provide on-the-job training.

What types of work are there for porters?

Warehouse movers are the most common position in the industry. You can use hand trucks or forklifts to move crates in or out of a vehicle for transport or storage. More complex loading operations involve the use of bulk loaders that load goods such as sand, coal or grain onto rail cars.

The work of loaders is not limited to civilian industry: they are also in demand in the armed forces. For any work with a forklift, you need to have advanced visual and spatial recognition skills to determine if it is safe to transport a load.

Income level

As of May 2021, the average salary for a loader in the US is $33,386 per year. The amount is given before taxes. This is equivalent to approximately $16.05 per hour, $642 per week or per month.

Job site ZipRecruiter lists an average annual salary of $18,500 to $51,500. Most of the salaries of American movers currently range from $25,500 to $36,000. The top 10% of employees earn $45,500 a year. The average pay range for a forklift varies greatly. This suggests that there are quite a few opportunities for career advancement and higher incomes, depending on the skill level, years of experience and place of residence.

This becomes especially clear when we compare the salary of an American loader with incomes in some other professions, including pharmacists, architects and lawyers.

worked as a loader for a long time, well, I did not work out with other works and other works and other works and other works everyone is here. And I need money, so I went as a loader. The work is hard, especially in the early days, until you get used to it, you come home and fall off your feet, but a person gets used to everything, as you know. The only big minus if you work on your own, and not in a company, then you can be deceived with a salary. But the plus is that the payments are immediately in hand.
    Dmitry, Moscow

Got a job as a loader last month. They got me in quickly and sent me to work right away. I chose night shifts, as during the day there is the main work. The conditions are the most common. In the brigade people are completely different. Someone works all the time, someone like me earns extra money at night or during the day. Honey book is being prepared. Of the minuses: there was a case that they did not calculate my salary for several shifts, so I had to write to the control service. Understood quickly.
    Evgeny, Ufa

It’s hard, at first it hurts, I broke my back… Then you get used to it! Temporary job, money urgently needed.

If you choose to use a full service moving company, , in most cases this will be the most expensive option for moving your belongings. If you are moving from one state to another, then the cost of moving your property will depend on the distance between the old and new location, weight and, accordingly, on the number of things that you own.

For example, if you’re moving from Chicago to Boston, Massachusetts (1,600 miles) and live in a 4-bedroom home, your average moving cost with a full-service moving company could be in excess of $10,000. But if you move within 100 miles of your old location, this cost will be based on an hourly rate of and will vary from company to company.

Average cost of moving per hour (local moves)
If you happen to be moving around the city or locally, it is important to understand how moving price is formed. Here are 3 things you should keep in mind throughout your local move so you don’t get a nasty surprise when it comes time to cover the costs.

      • 1) Local travel costs can vary greatly depending on your exact location (state and city). However, our average moving cost example will give you a good idea of how much money you should be willing to pay at the end of your short move.
      • 2) As a rule, local movers charge hourly, regardless of the type of activity they are currently doing. That is, the hourly rate remains the same regardless of whether whether they pack your household items by taking them outside your home, loading the same household items into a moving car, driving to a destination, unloading your items, or carrying all your furniture, appliances, and cardboard boxes across your new apartment’s doorstep, or at home.
      • 3) If you have no idea what the term “fare” means, you will probably find out soon enough. What is the average cost of a local move?

Average moving price for local moves is $25 per hour per move. However, this price may be higher depending on your location within the country. Therefore,

      • One-room apartment: 2 professional movers working for 3-5 hours at an average of $25 each per hour = $150 – $250 for all moving work.
      • 2-room apartment: 3 local movers work 5-7 hours at an average of $25 each hour = $375-$525 to get the job done.
      • 3 bedroom house: 4 professional local movers work 7-10 hours for an average of $25 each per hour = $700 – $1000 to complete the house move.
      • Large Homes: Estimated Local Relocation Costs for Large Homes (5,000 sq. ft. and above) increase sharply and can reach values around $1500-$2000 and even more.

To clarify the average moving cost for a 4 bedroom house, a reputable moving company charges based on the number of movers and trucks used during your move, so the cost of a 4 bedroom house would be around $150-170 per an hour for 4 experienced movers and a large van that can fit all your belongings. In addition to these shipping costs, most shipping companies do not include any additional packaging costs.

If you like to pack all your belongings yourself (including heavy things like mirrors, refrigerators, etc.), your average moving bill will be much lower than if you had professional movers do the packing for you. The cost of packing can be similar to the cost of moving. A 4 bedroom house can take over 12 hours to move from one city to another. In this case, your average moving cost would be around $1800 – $2500 excluding packaging.

      • Of course, additional costs depend on the complexity of your local move. An excessive flight of stairs, a long distance to the vehicle, or an excess of bulky and heavy items can make the final price higher. Discuss additional costs with your local transport company in advance.
      • Usually money is prepared in cash, if you are very satisfied with the performance of your movings and want to reward their efforts with a tip . And if so, the average cost of moving services will increase by 10-15% of the total cost of moving. Remember that tips to local movers are optional, but they are always appreciated by every hardworking crew member.
