Inside the houses of three local “second moms. “

Breakfast at Debbie Mazur’s home day care.

The profession brings the daunting responsibility of child care for a number of preschool children each day—plus long hours, and wear and tear on your home. But these Woodbury home daycare providers wouldn’t have it any other way, providing a second, loving home to their daycare kids.

Theresa Hollembeak

6 daycare children, ages 8 months to 5 years

Five years ago when her employer, State Farm Insurance, announced it was relocating out-of-state, Theresa Hollembeak (who was expecting her third child at the time) decided that opening a home daycare would be a great option for her to stay home and raise her daughter. Hollembeak’s bright and cheery home welcomes six little ones for 10 hours each day. “My bedrooms are used for naptime, my kitchen for all snacks and lunch, the front room as a play area while I prepare meals, and our entire basement is dedicated to my profession,” says Hollembeak. “Really, the only part of my house that’s not used is our family room.”

While Hollembeak pulls chicken nuggets out of the oven to add to a row of plates filled with green beans, fruit, and bread and butter, her daughter Briannah, 5, and Emma Heuer, 4, proudly show me around. The colorful basement playroom, adorned with letters of the alphabet on the walls, is a child’s dream: there’s a neat two-level playhouse (custom made by Hollembeak’s husband, Todd) with a large slide, dress-up clothes, a huge assortment of reading and coloring books, computer games, and even a separate, darling doll room.

“The best part of my job is watching the children grow up through their different stages,” says Hollembeak. “They can be so funny at times, and when they hug me and tell me they love me—there’s nothing as special as that. It brings a smile to my face when I hear the parents tell their children, ‘You’re going to your second Mom’s house today.’”

That’s not to say that the job doesn’t have its “challenges. ” “One time I went into the room to get one of my toddlers up from a nap to discover she’d taken off her ‘full’ diaper, not number one mind you, yes number two!” Hollembeak says. “It was all over her, my walls and the pack-and-play. That didn’t seem so funny at the time, but I can laugh about it now.”

At holiday time, Hollembeak’s daycare children make their parents a gift, and with that, she gives the parents a night out. “I come to their homes and watch the kids while the parents go on a date,” she says. “That’s something the parents really enjoy, but the kiddos think it’s very cool. I get to see their rooms and can better relate to them.”

Debbie Mazur

9 daycare children, ages 4 months to 9 years

It’s “table time” at Debbie Mazur’s, and on this cold winter morning, an enthusiastic group of little ones is nestled around the kitchen table, crayons in hand, working intently on pictures. Three boys are in high chairs, one nodding off, and one definitely flirting with me with his killer smile. “Can I please have another picture Debbie?” “I’m taking this one home for my mom and dad.” “Debbie, I need a blue crayon, please.” There’s lots of happy chatter as Mazur, a home daycare providers for 11 years, keeps a watching, loving eye on her brood.

“I was working for a mortgage company every other day from home which got to be a lot with my two children, trucking stuff back and forth from the office,” says Mazur. “We knew we wanted a third child, and it was actually our tax advisor who mentioned the daycare profession, pointing out the tax benefits. I’ve always enjoyed being around children. So I quit my job and took on one family to see how I’d do. I totally enjoyed it.”

Mazur’s days are full and structured: the children start arriving at 7 a.m.; there’s free play time in the toy room and kids are being served breakfast before 9 a.m. table time, with crafts, puzzles, coloring or games; then outside time which includes either a walk to one of three nearby parks or backyard play. Following lunch, it’s a half-hour of Sesame Street before naptime, with the children sleeping in various rooms throughout the house. “Then we have snacks and go outside again until pickup (3-5 p.m.),” says Mazur. “At 5 p.m., my second job begins with my own kids (Brandon, 15; Josh, 12; and Adam, 9). I don’t ever really have a spare moment, but that’s okay. I’m totally happy being a mom.”

Leslie and Marc Johnson’s son, Coleman, 11, was Mazur’s very first daycare child; she’s also taken care of his siblings Nicholas, 9, and Nathan, 7. “I have said many times how blessed we feel to have found Debbie,” says Leslie. “Our kids grew up with Debbie and love her. They were there until they started school full time and still for drop-in care after school as needed.

“What I’ve appreciated the most is that Debbie has an interest in developing the complete child, instilling the same values in her daycare kids as she does with her own sons—good manners, cleaning up, helping out. Anyone who’s met her sons sees this; she’s raising three wonderful young men who are so good with her daycare kids. ”

Lorayne Tobin

5 daycare children, ages 1 year to 5 years

Walking through the baby gate into Lorayne Tobin’s kitchen, I spot three cute kids. There’s James, 1, finishing lunch in his high chair; Chloe, 5, preparing to catch the bus for an afternoon preschool session; and Chase, 3, playing with a bucket full of dinosaurs at the island.

I also notice a large basket on the counter, chocked full of stickers, markers, paper and other art supplies. Tobin shows me booklets the kids are working on for their parents, letters they’ve written to soldiers through Operation Happy Note, and potholders with the children’s handprints. “It’s fun to come up with ideas and honestly, that’s one of the things that’s kept me going in daycare, the projects,” says Tobin with a laugh.

After 38 years as a home daycare provider, Lorayne Tobin is retiring. Friday, June 10 will be her last day of leading art projects, wiping noses and giving hugs to the five children currently under her watch. “I thought I’d quit doing this when my own kids went to school, but I like being home,” she says. “I’ve had wonderful families over the years that are really appreciative of me, and many of the kids come back to visit.”

“Lorayne’s house really felt like a second home for our kids,” says Pam Gotz. “They became very close with the other children, and we also got to know the parents as well as Lorayne hosted parties at her home to provide us with this opportunity. She offered a variety of activities for the kids and encouraged them to try new things; they still talk about her fabulous egg drop soup. I think she helped spark my son Ben’s interest in theater; she taught the kids various songs and dances, then had them put on a show for the parents. Very fun!”

Tobin says she never planned to be a daycare provider and with two young children, and her master’s degree in education, was just starting to look for a job when a neighbor called. “I had taken care of her daughter as a backup, and she asked me if I would consider doing daycare full time,” says Tobin. “Right away another family called; I got licensed and have been doing this nearly 40 years.”

When she finally closes the door for the last time in June, what will Tobin miss the most? “All the little stories I hear all day, they’re so cute,” she says. “They tell me their daddy likes to drive fast, or that their cat jumped into the washing machine and almost went through the load of wash. Then there are the activities we do and funny things that happen, like the pirate game. One day at naptime I hid the treasure chest in the yard; the kids followed yarn out to the chest to find the gold coin chocolates were all melted. I told them that pirates apparently didn’t know how hot it gets in the summer.”

What’s ahead for Tobin and her husband, Jim, who retired in January? “We’re taking a trip to China, and I want to spend time volunteering and gardening,” she says. “Our big project will be replacing our floors and furniture, and remodeling our entire kitchen. The baby gates will finally come down after all these years. ”
