the story of Georgia Tann, who kidnapped five thousand children

Georgia was born to a judge and a teacher. The father dreamed that his daughter would become a famous pianist, and from the age of five he gave her piano lessons. Georgia even graduated from college with a degree in music, but she always wanted to be like her father – to practice law.

The girl passed the state exam for a lawyer, but her overbearing father did not allow her to practice law, because he believed that this profession was not suitable for women.

In an effort to get rid of parental care and be independent, Georgia found the only socially approved profession where a young single woman could prove herself – a social worker.

Tann took a job at the Mississippi Orphanage Society, from which she was soon fired for “questionable placement practices.”

After leaving, she and her friend Ann Atwood packed up and moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where Tann became executive secretary of the Tennessee Children’s Home Society chapter.

Educated Georgia immediately realized that there were a number of legal holes in the adoption system that would allow them to make good money.

Georgia sincerely believed that children should not be brought up in poverty, but should be brought up in wealthy families.

She decided that her mission was to have as many children as possible raised in wealthy families, no matter what the cost. In addition, it turned out that rich people are ready to pay any money so that they are given the opportunity to become parents.

The scheme was simple: Georgia found single mothers in difficult life situations and persuaded them to send their children to an orphanage to heal them, while the mother could get her affairs back on track. Many children really needed medical care, which young mothers had no money for, and they agreed. If they did not agree, then threats of deprivation of parental rights were used.

By the way, working in the Tennessee Orphanage Society helped the “entrepreneur” to acquire useful connections: judges, lawyers, bribed doctors and nurses, and a whole network of people looking for suitable children.

When mothers came to the shelter for a child, they were told that the baby had died. In fact, the child had already been adopted by wealthy people from another state, and all data about his past life was destroyed.

There were many buyers. Everyone had their own reasons: some of the potential adoptive parents did not pass the age limit in the state of residence, someone was not given children for other reasons. Either way, the opportunity to have a baby through the Tennessee Orphanage Society was perceived as the last hope.

Over time, it turned out that there were not so many “suitable” children from single-parent families, Georgia needed a “commodity”.

Sometimes children were taken away from the street, sometimes they were taken directly from the maternity hospital, informing their parents about an illness incompatible with life. Babies were abducted from their mothers from psychiatric clinics and prisons, and documents were forged.

The deceit concerned not only the parents deprived of their children, but also the adoptive parents. No one suspected theft and forgery of documents. Thanks to the support of bribed judges, police and doctors, everything looked legal.

If the lie was somehow revealed, Tann threatened to sue and deprive the adoptive parents of the child’s rights. People who spent so much effort and money on adoption (an adopted child was estimated at about $ 700, excluding transportation costs. For this money in 1929 you could buy two Ford cars), were not ready to lose long-awaited children and simply kept silent.

The business grew so much that the children even had a guarantee. Here’s what it looked like in the docs:

“The intended adoptive couple is given full custody and control of the child for one year, may subject the child to any physical or mental examination, and take any steps to ensure that they have a healthy and normal child. If it’s not, the Tennessee Orphanage takes it in, no questions asked.”

Georgia also turned out to be a talented marketer – to attract potential buyers, she placed in newspapers a photo of cute children with the inscription: “Do you want a real, live Christmas present?”.

The campaign worked even better than Tann could have imagined.

Georgia Tann’s activities were reported in the newspapers and on the radio as a good deed. She was talked about as a woman who changed the perception of adoption in the United States. Her clients were famous stars, businessmen and even the governor of New York.

Georgia was idolized as a pioneer of the new social work while the work was destroying lives.

In 1943, a businessman even gave Tann a mansion to house an orphanage.

This continued until the statistics showed an incredible jump in infant mortality in Tennessee.

Tann’s priority was blue-eyed, blond children who were adopted as quickly as possible into wealthy families.

Those who stayed at the shelter were beaten, sedated and denied medical treatment. Children died in the orphanage from banal diarrhea simply because their complaints were ignored.

If a child was away from his family for a long time, he was starved, allowing him to die of malnutrition.

Some children were sold as free labor to farms. Barbara Raymond’s book says that Georgia herself raped girls, sold children to pedophiles and killed them.

No one has been able to calculate the exact number of dead children. During the twenty-five years of Georgia Tann’s activity, about five hundred children are believed to have died or gone missing.

The death of 19 children was officially confirmed, whom Tann buried in a four-square-meter plot without names or dates. The cemetery looked like a list of nineteen names: “Baby Estelle” or “Baby Joseph” for example. In 2015, caring people at this place erected a monument in memory of all the children who died at the hands of the Tennessee Children’s Homes Society.

It was not until the 1940s that the city administration began to have some suspicions about Tann’s activities, although they concerned money laundering.

During the investigation, it turned out that the pious front for finding families for the homeless was actually just a business of kidnapping and selling children, from which Tann earned about a million dollars and ruined thousands of lives.

During Georgia Tann’s activities, about five thousand children were abducted, most of them could not find their biological parents.

Georgia Tann died of uterine cancer three days before her indictment and received no punishment for her actions.

Despite her atrocities, Tann made adoption an acceptable part of American society. And her desire to place her children in affluent families led to adoption being associated with the upper class. Adoption literally became fashionable and socially approved, which was not the case before.

The scandal involving the concealment and destruction of data on adopted children has led to a significant tightening of legislation in the field of adoption in the United States.
