“Aluminum burned like paper” 50 years ago, a military plane crashed into a kindergarten.
How did they try to hide the death of 24 children in the USSR? . The An-24 military transport aircraft, which was making an inspection flight, crashed into a tree and fell on a kindergarten. The pilots themselves, educators and 24 children were killed. The official version says that in conditions of poor visibility, the crew of the aircraft made a mistake in determining the flight altitude. According to another, the pilots were drunk. The tragedy shocked quiet Svetlogorsk. The local authorities tried to cynically hide the information about the disaster – in the morning of the next day, a square was laid out on the site of the kindergarten. During the years of secrecy, the incident was overgrown with rumors and speculation. What actually happened in the Kaliningrad region exactly half a century ago – in the material “Lenta.ru”.
***
Tuesday, the high sky over the Baltic is tightly covered with leaden clouds. Kindergarten pupils in Svetlogorsk are finishing their walk and rushing back to the premises – there will be lunch soon. Usually you can’t drive them, but on this day, many guys want to get off the street as soon as possible. It is cold and damp there: on May 16, 1972, the Kaliningrad Hydrometeorological Bureau promised cloudy weather with clearings, fog, variable winds and air temperatures of five to ten degrees.
The town they live in is a real pearl by the sea. It blooms and fragrant, majestically towering sprawling pines. Since the time when Prussia was still here and the city was called Rauschen, this is a popular resort.
Kindergarten on Lenin Street seems to be not simple, but very prestigious. Many parents seek to place their children here. Among the pupils, for example, the daughter of the local Komsomol leader Yevgeny Zhavoronkov, children of other influential people in the city and region.
At about a quarter to one, everything in the kindergarten cafeteria is ready for dinner. The cook Tamara Yankovskaya sets the table, after the meal the kids have a quiet hour.

At the same time, an An-24 military aircraft takes off from the Khrabrovo airfield. On board are six crew members and two inspectors who will check the radio equipment of the airfield of the Baltic Fleet Air Force in the village of Kosa.
It is planned to fly at an altitude of 500 meters, but once above the sea, the commander of the ship Vilor Gutnik reports to the base about the continuation of the flight at an altitude of 150 meters. The task before the crew is not difficult, however, after Zelenogradsk, An-24s are lost on the ground.
At the 15th minute of the flight, the aircraft enters the fog at an unacceptably low altitude. Only 42 meters to the ground, and the board crashes into the tops of pines. An-24 loses part of the wing from the impact. After flying another 200 meters, it falls on the kindergarten building. The plane is destroyed and burns down along with the building. The crew, inspectors, 24 children and a cook perish in this fire. Two educators from the received wounds will die later.
“The military quickly removed everything”
Almost simultaneously, firefighters, servicemen of the Baltic Fleet and cadets of the police school arrived at the crash site. A state of emergency was declared in Svetlogorsk for a day, the city was cordoned off, telephone communications were cut off. While the rubble was being sorted out and the bodies of the victims of the disaster were being searched, the KGB officers worked with the population, trying with all their might to prevent publicity. Electric trains from Kaliningrad were canceled, highways were blocked. Fragments of the fuselage, fragments of the building and the remains of the dead were loaded onto dump trucks and immediately taken away.
After the crash of the An-24 all over Svetlogorsk, electricity was cut off. People were forbidden not only to leave the city, but also to leave their homes. They sat intimidated, not understanding what was happening.
Someone could be identified by fragments of clothing. For example, Tanya Zhavoronkova – a piece of a blue dress. It was said that her father had a heart attack after the news of the tragedy. Six-year-old Andrei Shabashov, whose body was the last to be pulled out from the rubble, died almost by accident. He did not go to kindergarten because of an ear infection. In the morning, the grandmother took the boy to the doctor, and walked back past the kindergarten. The mother of the child worked there as a teacher. Noticing his mother, Andrei ran to her, and at that moment the An-24 crashed into the building.
Seven-year-old Olya Korobova was more fortunate. The girl, who had a sore throat, had already recovered and was supposed to go to the garden on Tuesday, but her mother had a day off on May 16, and she allowed her daughter to spend one more day at home. A similar story happened with Ira Golushko.

Of course, despite the efforts of the authorities and special services, every resident of Svetlogorsk knew about the tragedy. Professional fisherman Vyacheslav Simonov has lived there since 1960. During a plane crash, he was catching squid off the coast of Argentina.
“When I returned from fishing to the base, the guys already knew everything, discussed the trouble,” he told Lente.ru. – There was an explosion from fuel, it burned for a long time. But the military quickly removed everything. When I got there, there were no traces left. Some parents of the dead children left Svetlogorsk, others stayed here to live. I read that adults massively committed suicide. This, of course, is nonsense. There were rumors that someone died of grief, that women had seizures. For a long time, emotional wounds did not let go. But time heals, after half a century it no longer affects the psyche so much.
I remember not agreeing with an article by a war correspondent. He wrote very one-sidedly: once, they say, the plane crashed into a kindergarten. But that doesn’t happen either!
“I didn’t see the ground and thought I had 100 more meters in reserve”
One of the foreign radio stations reported about the tragedy in the USSR. The day after the incident, on May 17, this fact was discussed at a meeting of the local leadership. As one of the leaders of the Svetlogorsk party organization, later chairman of the Union of Former Juvenile Prisoners of Fascist Concentration Camps, Eduard Trushchenkov, recalled, the comrades were perplexed – how did they learn about the incident so quickly abroad? It was even suspected that there were agents in Svetlogorsk working for enemy intelligence. A KGB representative present at the meeting reluctantly admitted that the foreigners were able to intercept the negotiations.
Soviet newspapers did not write anything about the incident. The information was passed from mouth to mouth: people knew that the plane had crashed on a kindergarten and the children had died. A little later, there was also a rumor that a flower bed was broken on the site of the burned-out kindergarten. There was no other information; the causes of the disaster were openly discussed only in the early 1990s.
This is how myths began to appear that the crew was inexperienced, and the plane was out of order. One bike did say that the An-24 pilots stared at the nudists resting on the beach. According to another version, the crew members drank before the flight.
For 50 years, experts have been discussing the actions of aircraft commander Vilor Gutnik in the last moments before the crash. It is believed that a few seconds were not enough for him to prevent a catastrophe. When the plane emerged from the fog, the captain understood the situation and pulled the steering wheel towards himself. However, the maneuverability of the An-24 is not like that of a fighter, and Gutnik did not have time to correct the situation.
This officer’s flight time at the time of the tragedy was about 5,000 hours. Gutnik was considered one of the best pilots in his regiment. “Vilor Ilyich was a pilot of the highest class. Competent, disciplined, very scrupulous in everything. Yes, and the whole crew was his strongest, ”said Air Force veteran Vladimir Pisarenko.
As Vladimir Biryukov, an honored test pilot of Russia, IAC expert on disaster investigations, told Lente.ru, there were usually no problems with the An-24 either – it is considered very durable and easy to fly. Graduates of military or civil aviation schools usually begin to fly on this machine. The expert noted that the An-24 turboprop engines have shown excellent performance over decades of operation – they are good and reliable. But something went wrong.
“Typically, the flight takes place at a standard pressure of 760 millimeters of mercury (the pressure is set to determine the flight altitude – approx. “Lenty.ru” ), and when landing, they use the so-called pressure relative to the airfield – QNH, Biryukov explained. “They either set the pressure incorrectly or didn’t set it at all.”
The War Department, then as it is now, conducts investigations on its own and rarely reports the results to the public. IAC specialists are involved in individual cases

Vladimir Voronov, a native of the Kaliningrad region, a local historian and author of a book about the history of Svetlogorsk, an air navigation specialist, agrees with this version. He told Lente.ru that the plane has two altimeters – a radio altimeter and a barometric one, which calculates the altitude depending on the air atmosphere. If one device does not work, another will determine the height. Atmospheric pressure in the airfield area, apparently, was set inaccurately.
“While collecting material for my book, I picked up all the documents and studied the aviation accident log,” says Voronov. – The aircraft was performing a training flight to test the radio system. When the plane was flying over the sea at an altitude of, say, 100 meters, visibility was poor and the pilot could not see the shore. In this case, an incorrectly set altimeter showed the wrong height. The pilot was guided by it, believing that he was flying at an altitude of more than 100 meters. The height of the cliff is about 50 meters, the height of the pine tree is about the same. What happens? Not seeing the ground and thinking that he has another 100 meters in reserve, the pilot flies up to the shore, a pine tree suddenly appears in front of him, and he clings to it. An error in installing the barometric sensor led to a disaster.”
The experiments carried out during the investigation made it possible to establish that Gutnik’s crew received data with an error of up to 60-70 meters. According to the stories of local residents, the An-24 only miraculously did not touch the Ferris wheel with its wing, flying a few meters from it. If he had, there would have been even more victims.
They did not open a criminal case, the conclusions of the investigation were not made public, although about 40 military personnel lost their posts by order of the Ministry of Defense.
“The plane began to chop everything in its path”
In 2012, military pensioner Mikhail Slobodchikov came to the editorial office of the Kaliningrad newspaper Novye Kolyolas. He claimed that in 1972 he served in the 263rd Aviation Regiment and was a member of the crew of the same An-24. Slobodchikov said that he was supposed to be on board at the time of the tragedy, but shortly before departure he was replaced by another flight mechanic, Nikolai Gavrilyuk, who was preparing to go on vacation in a week. According to Slobodchikov, an accident saved him from death: the regiment commander hit his Volga against a tree and instructed him to repair the car.

According to Slobodchikov, he was banned from talking about the tragedy for 30 years. After this period, he considered himself free from obligations and presented his own version of what happened in Svetlogorsk. He claimed that after a whole series of unauthorized arrivals of small aircraft from abroad into the USSR, the command decided to check all the radar stations of the coastal tracking system and find out how foreign pilots violate the Soviet border. Therefore, the crew, led by Captain Gutnik, did not refuse to take off due to bad weather. It was necessary to check whether the aircraft was visible at extremely low altitude.
“An-24 is very heavy, it weighs 21 tons,” he said. – When you pull the steering wheel sharply towards you, it sags a little at first. At high altitude, he imperceptibly sank and went up. And then … He began to cut down everything in his path – trees, bushes … He hooked the ground with his tail. The wings broke off. The fuselage crashed into the garden, demolished the second floor, filled up everything there. Kerosene spilled out… The plane burned down completely. The aluminum burned like paper.”
Slobodchikov confirmed the rumors that alcohol was found in the blood of five crew members during the autopsy. The military pensioner believes that the results of the examination were deliberately concealed so that the relatives of the victims would receive compensation, and the authorities would avoid too harsh consequences.
But the interlocutors of Lenta.ru believe that the Soviet pilots could not get on the plane drunk. However, Vladimir Biryukov admits that they could drink the day before.
“The question does not have an unambiguous answer,” the expert noted. “It all depends on the conscience of the investigators. I admit that traces of alcohol could be found in the blood. For many [car drivers] it happens that they have drunk, and the next day they have to drive. There is still alcohol in the blood, but you already feel normal, a normal reaction. And the fact that they drank immediately before the flight and flew drunk is extremely unlikely, like a fire during a flood, when the wife is also cheating. It may well be that in official documents [the fact of the presence of alcohol in the blood] was hidden or not noted. But, I repeat, drinking a day ago could not affect the condition of the pilots. Before each flight [pilots] undergo medical control. Not in terms of the definition of alcohol, but in general.
Biryukov also added that in those days military pilots flew six days a week, knew and understood their job well, and did not neglect safety precautions.
In turn, local historian Voronov, in a conversation with Lenta.ru, called the version about checking the reasons for violating the USSR border nonsense, since such facts are not reflected in official documents.
***
Parents were given marked coffins, forbidden to open them. The dead children and teachers were buried in a mass grave at the Svetlogorsk cemetery. It was not allowed to film the funeral ceremony.
Frame: MORSKIYA / YouTube
The pilots rested in the city cemetery of Kaliningrad. It seems that the relatives of the dead preschool children were categorically opposed to the military, whom they considered guilty, were buried next to the children.
Apparently, relatives were left without any compensation. Trushchenkov hinted at this in his interview: “Although I then hinted at the regional committee. Say, maybe we will give families at least a food package? The answer was rude and categorical … ”It is no longer possible to clarify this information from the former secretary of the city committee himself. As Lenta.ru found out, Truschenkov died in 2021.
In the 2000s, the Svetlogorsk tragedy was actively discussed in LiveJournal. Eyewitnesses of the events also came to the comments, today many of them are no longer alive.
In 2010, Ensign Gavrilyuk’s daughter Elena came to a commentary on one of the posts about the An-24 crash. The woman admitted that her mother, the widow of a flight engineer, lived the rest of her life alone, crying into her pillow at night.
“My childhood has turned from a happy one into an unhappy one, but how can one tell about everything… Since childhood, I have been waiting for the truth that was hidden. Now I can show articles about that ill-fated day to my children. Let no one know such horrors, and God forbid anyone to experience such grief, ”she wrote.
Twenty-two years after the plane crash, in 1994, a memorial church was consecrated at the site of the tragedy, built with donations from the people. It is decorated with a built-in bell tower with a tent, and a commemorative plaque is attached to the wall at the entrance. Inside there are photographs of the dead, and a candle is always lit.
