Our Approach

Every week, we will center group discussions and activities around various topics that inspire awareness of ourselves, others, and the world around us. These concepts can be explored through art, mindfulness, group discussions, experiments, reading, hands on learning, investigation, and so much more!

EXPLORATION OF OURSELVES

  • Discovery and understanding of our bodies, interest, moods, and feelings.

  • Embracing responsibility and safety.

  • Identifying growth, abilities/talents, changes, and challenges.

  • Developing self-concept, self-confidence, self-compassion, and self-awareness.

EXPLORATION OF OTHERS

  • Discovery and understanding of family units, friends, classmates, neighbors, friendships/relationships, diversity, abilities, cultures, traditions/holidays, and animals.

  • Embracing and valuing diversity in all forms.

EXPLORATION OF ENVIRONMENT

  • Discovery and understanding of community (classroom, neighborhood, country, world).

  • Relationships and our connections to each other.

  • Exploring of our connection to nature and all that surrounds us.

  • Impermanence and changes in seasons, life cycles, weather, etc.

  • Awareness of the space we occupy.

When we say “Mindfulness” we are really saying “creating awareness”. More specifically, the awareness of what is happening inside and outside our bodies and accepting it as it is. When we implement this practice in a child’s day to day, we are giving them the tools for self-expression, self-help, confidence, and communication.

Some ways we practice Mindfulness in class:

  • Daily check-ins to access our current feelings.

  • Exploring ourselves, others, and the world around us through hands-on observation, group discussions, art, and creative play.

  • Observing the natural changes that occur around us.

Reconnection ● Observation ● Openness ● Thankfulness ● Stewardship

We are so lucky to have Fauntleroy Park in our backyard and the beaches of Lincoln Park just minutes away!

Although we get to be outside daily, for once a week our students will spend their whole morning out of the classroom and in nature! We will have nature based lessons and activities, mindfulness practices, games, and so much exploring!

The program aims to promote a connection to the natural world, a love and appreciation for our parks and beaches, and inspire a sense of stewardship and responsibility for our environment.

*Our younger classes participate as well, but at shorter times due to age and toileting needs.

Hazelwood Roy

Hazelwood Roy
(Robert Roy Hazelwood) (born 1938) –
famous American specialist in
field of criminal psychology.
Vice President of the Academic Group,
Uniting Veterans Division
FBI Behavioral Sciences.

He is considered the best specialist in
areas of investigation into abductions and
sexual crimes.
For thirty years of work in the police
authorities and the FBI, he revealed more
two hundred complicated cases related to
pedophilia and kidnapping.

R. Hazelwood is one of the “pioneers”
criminal profiling. My
activities in this direction
started in the 70s when the FBI was
established the Department of Behavioral Sciences.

In 1980 Hazelwood developed
typology of serial killers. This
the concept is widely used
law enforcement agencies for
search and arrest of criminals.
She classifies serial killers into
two categories: organized
non-social criminal and
disorganized antisocial
criminal.

At
recognition of typological
accessories of the installed
serial killer is important to consider
that the behavior of organized
criminals compared to
disorganized in place
incidents has significant
differences. Organized (by style)
life) a person, organized and
crime style. And vice versa,
disorganization in life
manifests itself in disorganization
crimes.

Organized non-social
the offender carefully prepares his
crime, he attaches great
the importance of erasing traces
crimes. For these purposes,
for example, committing a murder in one
place, he can move the corpse to
another place. Unlike him
disorganized criminal
attacks the victim suddenly, not
planning ahead or very poorly
planning a crime. Spontaneity
and the suddenness of the attack leads to
that at the crime scene
many traces remain.

Hazelwood designed and
appropriate interrogation tactics
criminals depending on their
typologies.

Large
attention in his works Hazelwood
focused on prevention and
disclosure of sexual crimes.
They were offered psychological
classification of types of rapists,
studied psychological characteristics
and behavioral styles of serial
rapists.

Im also
symptoms have been described
autoerotic fatalities,
that can help the investigator
recognize and describe such cases
even when someone tries
“disguise” circumstances
of death.

First
half of the 80s, Hazelwood became
the first FBI officer who openly
called pedophiles criminals, not
sick people. “Today this
hard to believe, but another 20 years
back thousands of american
human rights defenders sought the right to
treatment for men accused of
rape of young children
remembers Hazelwood. – I was not afraid
openly say that pedophiles
should be sentenced to death
execution, for which I repeatedly
called an executioner and even a fascist.”

Exactly to Hazelwood
belongs to the catchphrase,
transformed over time into
popular aphorism: “In our
society has no cure
pedophiles and sex maniacs.
Even if you find it, it
will be called either gas
camera or electric chair.

After leaving in 1993 for
resignation, R. Hazelwood continued
deal with the problems of
sexual crimes, closely
cooperating with the FBI and others
law enforcement
various countries of the world, advising
cases to investigate such
crimes.

At the end
90s he leads
capture task force
serial killer Dennis Rader
nickname BTK (from the words bind, torture
and kill, that is, “tie, torture,
kill”). This maniac and a half
decades terrified the inhabitants
Kansas town of Wichita. He was catching
attractive girls chained
them to the bed, after which he poked
victims’ eyes, pulled out nails,
raped and killed. one of his
Raider victims tortured throughout
two long months.

“That was the most
complex investigation in my
career,” Hazelwood recalls. –
Many of my colleagues could not stand
that psychological stress
which was required to calculate
maniac. In total we
arrested several hundred
suspects, but subsequently
each of them was recognized
innocent. At times I wanted
cordon off the whole city and check
every adult male
lie detector.

According to the official
version, Dennis Rader killed ten
women, but the investigation believes
that the total number of victims of a maniac –
at least thirty. And the first
the offender committed the murder
way back in 1974.

Hazelwood could not
catch the Raider yourself,
however, it was he who prepared the mass
documents and collected evidence that
helped in 2005 to disarm
maniac. “After retirement
I began to suffer terrible headaches
pain and insomnia,” Roy admits.
– I felt guilty about
that he didn’t catch the serial killer.
Every day I waited for a message from
colleagues that the number of victims
increased in Wichita. I am so
closed in on himself that he began to see
maniac in every person who
met me on the street.

The raider was detained in February 2005
years, and Roy Hazelwood found out about it
one of the first. He personally called
FBI Director Robert Mueller. “It was
the happiest day of my life,
Roy admits. – When I heard
that VTK was arrested, he closed his eyes and
I thought that now I can
die with a clear conscience…

His research papers in psychology
sadists and pedophiles are in demand and
used to train young
FBI agents

Australia: CFMEU secures fair transition for workers at Hazelwood power plant

In November 2016, multinational energy company Engie announced that the coal-fired power plant and adjacent mine will be closed on 31 March 2017 and hundreds of jobs will be made redundant . The CFMEU entered into discussions with the Latrobe Valley power plant management and the Victorian government, which resulted in a partnership-based transfer scheme for Latrobe Valley workers.

The agreement contains commitments to minimize job losses and retrain workers, as well as a provision for an early retirement system that will free up jobs for those who want to continue working in the industry.

Older workers who work at the Loi Yang power plant and mine located in the same area will be asked to retire early. This will create jobs for young workers at the Hazelwood power plant. ” This will keep families, jobs and, by extension, money in Latrobe Valley. Employment support will be provided to at least 150 Hazelwood workers.

CFMEU National President and IndustriALL Global Union Executive Committee member Tony Maher called the scheme, which includes commitment from Latrobe Valley power management, unions and the Victorian government, a “breakthrough in best practice”.

“This partnership provides support to workers, their families and the wider Latrobe Valley community as the Hazelwood power plant closes,” he said.

“It guarantees a fair transition for workers, their families and local residents. Tonight, hundreds of workers who will be directly affected by the power plant closure will breathe a sigh of relief at the commitment made to the future of their families.”

The Hazelwood power plant and mine are located in Latrobe Valley, Victoria, 150 km east of Melbourne. The property is jointly owned by Engie (72%) and Mitsui (28%). The French company Engie, formerly known as GDF Suez, entered into a global framework agreement in 2012 with IndustriALL and the international federations PSI and BWI.
