Carp inhabits the waters of the basins of the Mediterranean, Black, Azov, Caspian Seas. It is found in the rivers Danube, Dnieper, Don, Kuban, Ural, Kura and Volga. Distributed in the basins of the Amur and some rivers in China.

The female carp can sweep up to 1.5-2.0 million eggs. Spawning starts when the water temperature reaches 17-200C. At less favorable temperatures, spawning lasts 4-7 days. Caviar is deposited on soft underwater vegetation, to which it sticks.
The incubation period of eggs at a temperature of 150C lasts 15 days, at a temperature of 200C about a week.
The juvenile carp feeds for some time on small rotifers and crustaceans, and when it reaches a length of 18 mm, it switches to feeding on benthic invertebrates.
An adult carp has an average length of 30-40 cm, weight up to 20 kg.
In the Azov-Black Sea basin, three reproduction enterprises are engaged in the artificial reproduction of carp in the Rostov region: FSUE Aksai-Donskoy fish hatchery, FSUE Rogozhkinsky fish hatchery, FSUE Azov Research Institute of Fisheries, which performs work at the production facilities of the Vzmorye Fish Breeding Plant.
