90,000 Capture of Acre 1291. Great battles. 100 battles that changed the course of history

Taking Acre

1291

After Ain Jalut, the almost continuous Mongol offensive in the Middle East was stopped. The new Sultan of Egypt and Syria, Baybars, turned against the ancient enemies of Islam – the Crusaders. He dealt methodical and increasingly powerful blows to Christian cities and fortresses. In 1265, Arzuf and Caesarea fell under his onslaught, and the Templar stronghold of Safed was taken the following year. The year 1268 brought the crusaders of the Levant the heaviest losses. First, Jaffa, the main port of pilgrims, fell, and then Antioch, the city of crusading glory and the capital of northern Syria, was taken by storm. New crusading preparations of the French king Louis IX the Saint briefly interrupted this onslaught, but the complete failure of the campaign and the death of the king himself in Tunisia completely untied Baybars’ hands. He took several more important castles covering Acre and Tripoli – the two main cities that still remained under the rule of the crusaders. nine0003

The unexpected death of Baibars, who died in 1277 either from illness or poisoning, gave the crusaders a break, as a war for power broke out among the Mamluks. However, this last opportunity to gain a foothold was not used. The last years of the existence of the crusader states were, as before, filled with the internecine struggle of various national and clan groups. Meanwhile, the power in Egypt was seized by the new Sultan Calaun. By 1285, he already felt strong enough to launch the first serious attack on the Crusaders, and took the powerful Markib fortress. And in 1289It was Tripoli’s turn. Only now the terrible danger finally stopped the continuous strife among the Christians, but it was already too late. The miracles of courage shown by the Johnites and the Templars could not help against the ten times superior enemy forces. The city was taken by Calaun and burned, and the captured inhabitants were sold into slavery. The Crusaders had only the powerful fortress of Acre – all that was left of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. But her fate was actually a foregone conclusion.

Acre was in those days one of the most beautiful and flourishing cities in the Levant. The lively trade of the West and the East brought huge wealth to the city. The news of the warlike intentions of the Sultan of Calaun, who, after the capture of Tripoli, swore to crush this last stronghold of the crusaders, greatly frightened the inhabitants of Acre, for the most part merchants and artisans. But after the speech of Patriarch Nicholas of Jerusalem, the townspeople unanimously decided to defend “the magnificent city of Akkon, the gate to the Holy Places of the Promised Land” to the last drop of blood. A request for help was sent to Europe. Spiritual knightly orders received some reinforcement from the West: several military detachments from Cyprus also came to the rescue. Together with the small detachments that had been kept in the Holy Land for many years by the kings of France and England, they finally amounted to a fairly serious military force of twenty thousand people. By its size, this army was able to defend a strong fortress for a long time. However, there was no unity of command in the fortress. The young king Henry II of Cyprus did not enjoy authority, and subsequently remained in Cyprus until the end of the siege of Acre. A plan for the defense of the city was drawn up in advance, but the Templars and Hospitallers, Pisans and Venetians, the knights of Syria and Cyprus, England and France did only what they themselves considered necessary. The crusader army suffered from its usual disease – the lack of unity, and this in the face of a vastly superior enemy. nine0003

Guillaume de Clermont defends the walls of Acre. D. Papeti. 19th century

The unexpected death of Calaun in November 1290 did not change anything for the crusaders. His son and heir al-Ashraf Khalil, with the support of the Ulama, was able to retain power and vowed to complete the work begun by his father. In the spring of 1291, a Muslim army of nearly 100,000 men laid siege to Acre. The siege was well prepared. The Mamluks had large food supplies, had seventy-two assault guns. Nevertheless, the crusaders decided to fight to the end. They managed to repel several heavy assaults, and on May 16 they even defeated a large detachment of Muslims that broke into the city. In these last days for Acre, the Templars covered themselves with special glory, who, with their frantic struggle, seemed to be trying to wash away the sins of the numerous mistakes and crimes of the order with blood. nine0003

On May 18, the decisive assault began. The Muslims managed to break into the city, but they had to go literally over the corpses, and the battle was for every house. This desperate resistance could no longer save Acre, but at least allowed some of the inhabitants to flee to the ships. The battle continued for several more days, but in the end, the last citadel fell, and its defenders were killed.

The fall of Acre marked the end of Christian dominance in the Levant. Within a month, the crusaders voluntarily abandoned their last fortresses – Beirut, Tire and Sidon. Almost two centuries of crusading epic ended for the Christians with a complete defeat. nine0003

nine0000 Charm read online by Clifford Simak (Page 25)

“I think there is such a name here,” he said. “Dal, did you say?”

is John H. Dahl, Hopkins specified.

— That’s right, three weeks ago I rented a house in Lucky Acres to John H. Dahl. Do you think it’s him?

– Tall, swarthy man. Forty three years. Pretty nervous.

Homer shook his head:

— I don’t remember him. I had a lot of visitors.

– Do you have Benny August on your lists?

Homer turned a few pages:

– B. J. August. He came the day after Mr. Dahl.

– And I’m also interested in a man named Drake.

Drake was also on the list. Hopkins rubbed his hands contentedly:

– How do I get into Happy Acres?

Overwhelmed by longing, Homer told Hopkins how to get there.

Grabbing a bag of fish, he left the office with Hopkins. The policeman got into the car and drove off, and Homer looked after him for a long time. Don’t get caught by Hopkins when he gets back. He just hoped the cop wouldn’t look for him. nine0003

After closing the office, Homer went to a cafe to buy a newspaper. He opened the latest issue and immediately caught sight of the catchy headline:

WANTED THREE CRIMINALS OF THE STOCK SCAM

Below were three photographs. He read the names. Dal. August. Drake. Carefully folding the newspaper, Homer tucked it under his arm and felt sweat trickling down his back.

He knew very well that Hopkins would never find these people. They’ll be safe at Happy Acres. It was only then that Homer realized what an ideal place Happy Acres would be for those who wanted to hide. nine0003

I wonder how many tenants the police are looking for? It’s no wonder that word of Happy Acres has spread so rapidly, and his office is crowded with people who have bought new cars.

So what’s going on anyway? How is the scam set up? Who is behind Happy Acres? And why was he, Homer Jackson, drawn into this mysterious story?

Elaine gave him an appraising look as soon as he crossed the threshold.

“You are excited,” she said sternly. nine0003

Homer lied nobly:

— Not at all. Just a little tired.

“Scared to death” would be much closer to the truth.

The next morning at nine o’clock in the morning, Homer drove up to the Happy Acres. He entered Steen’s office without knocking and only then noticed that he had a visitor. The man who was talking to Steen turned quickly towards the door.

“Ah, it’s you,” he said.

Homer saw that this man was Hopkins. Steen smiled tiredly:

– Mr. Hopkins thinks we’re obstructing justice.

— I don’t understand how Mr. Hopkins could come up with such an idea? Homer was surprised.

Hopkins could hardly contain his rage:

— Where are all these people? What did you do with them?

— I told you, Mr. Hopkins, we only rent houses. We are not responsible for our tenants. We have a variety of people renting accommodation.

– You hid them!

– How can we hide them, Mr. Hopkins? And where? You can visit any of our houses. Search to your heart’s content. nine0003

“I don’t understand what’s going on here,” Hopkins said angrily. But I will definitely find out. And I strongly advise both of you to give reasonable explanations.

“I think,” Steen said thoughtfully, “that Mr. Hopkins’ commitment to duty is admirable. Do you agree with me, Mr. Jackson?

“Without a doubt,” replied Homer, who didn’t know what else to say.

“You will choke on your own words,” Hopkins promised them.

And he ran out of the office, slamming the door deafeningly. nine0003

“What an unpleasant person,” Steen remarked quite calmly.

“I’m out of business,” Homer said. I have pockets full of cash and checks. As soon as I return them, my participation in your enterprise will be ended. Look for someone else – let him do the dirty work for you.

— I am very sorry to hear this. And at the very moment when things are going so well for you. You can earn tons of money.

– It’s too risky.

– Yes, it seems so, but in reality you are not risking anything. Guys like Hopkins kick up a lot of dust, but what can they do? Nothing threatens us. nine0003

— We rent the same houses.

“Yes, of course,” Steen did not argue. “How else can I find enough customers for our mall?” You yourself said that fifty families would not be enough. And you are right, of course. But if you rent out our houses ten times, you get five hundred families… By the way, Mr. Jackson, by the time we rent our houses for the hundredth time, you will have earned twenty-five million dollars – not bad for a few years of work. And whatever you may think of me, Mr. Jackson,” Steen concluded, “I am being absolutely honest. You are selling a real product. After all, I said that I’m not interested in the money from the sale of houses, I’m only concerned with the profits of the mall. nine0003

Homer pretended not to be impressed by Steen’s words. He began to take money and checks out of his pockets. Steen began signing the checks, then neatly folded the cash.

“I hope you change your mind, Mr. Jackson,” he continued to urge. “I need a man like you. Your work completely satisfies me. I ask you to stay.

“Then be completely honest with me,” Homer suggested. “And I will stay. Tell us how it all works and what are your plans. nine0003

Steen put his finger to his lips:

— Shh! You don’t understand what you are asking.

— In other words, you are saying that we are not in serious trouble?

– Well, in the worst case, we will be pestered by unpleasant types, nothing more.

– But we can be brought to trial if they can prove that we help criminals hide.

Steen sighed heavily:

— Mr. Jackson, how many escaped criminals have you sheltered in the last six weeks? nine0003

“None,” Homer answered decisively.

— Me too. Steen spread his arms wide. “Then we have nothing to fear. We don’t break laws. In any case,” he clarified, “the police have no evidence.

He collected cash and checks and handed them to Homer.

“Here,” he said. You can take them to the bank. This is your money.

Homer took a stack of banknotes and checks and stood up. He thought about what Steen had said. “We don’t break laws.” Perhaps Steen is right and Homer was scared for nothing. What can the police tell him? Ad Fraud? There were no promises made that were not fulfilled. nine0003

Are tenants required to buy new cars? Yes, such an option is possible, but Homer did not say that the purchase of a car is a prerequisite for a deal. He only mentioned that it would be a good idea to buy a car from a company that represents Happy Acres.

Can he really be sued for selling houses for less than their cost? Hardly, because it will be very difficult to prove that the lease is tantamount to a sale. In addition, selling or renting houses at prices below cost is not a crime. nine0003

Finally, could he have been arrested for renting the same houses several times? Of course not – as long as someone is not hurt, but how to prove it?

For disappearances? But you can talk to them on the phone, besides, they regularly leave the gates of the complex. And everyone is happy and even happy.

“Perhaps,” Steen said softly, “you will agree to stay with us.

“Perhaps,” Homer answered.

And went to the bank. The building made an impression. The foyer was finished with spectacular reddish metal and glittering mirrors. Birds sat in graceful cages, some of them singing. nine0003

There were no customers in the bank, but perfect cleanliness was maintained everywhere. The handsome vice-president was seated at a polished desk with no papers on the surface. Beside a narrow window, the cashier was bored.

Homer went to the window and slipped cash and checks inside. Then he took out a bank passbook from his wallet and handed it to the cashier. The cashier looked through the book and said:

– I’m sorry, Mr. Jackson, but you don’t have an account with our bank. nine0003

– No account! cried Homer. “But I have a quarter of a million on my account!”

His heart sank and almost broke on the floor. If Steen had been around, he would have been in trouble.

“No,” the cashier said calmly, “you made a mistake. That’s all.

— Error! Homer breathed, he had to cling to the window to keep from falling.
