San Souci Academy is a K3 and K4 preschool. At Sans Souci Academy, we believe young children learn through play! The classroom has centers (such as House, Block, and Art Center, etc.) which provide learning opportunities for social experiences, imaginative play and fosters creativity.  The students have daily opportunities for gross motor play on the playground or gym activities.  Small Groups are a time when Math and Literacy is the focus, but activities are presented in an age appropriate and fun, exciting way.

One of the most important things San Souci Academy focuses on is social/emotional goals such as sharing, taking turns, and cooperatively playing.  Once children have mastered most social/emotional, age-appropriate goals, then they are able to really focus on academic success—whether that’s now or later.

We can’t wait to partner with you to help your child grow!

Benefits of Half and Full Day Preschool From Paradigm

A big question currently in debate is whether half-day or full-day preschool is best for children. Both have their own advantages but it is not a one size fits all phenomenon. Which scheduled preschool is best differs from child to child. Here is some information to help you determine which scheduled preschool will be the best for your child!

Half-Day Preschool

Half-day preschool and kindergarten are very popular in families with younger kids. If your children are just starting school, a half-day can be less stressful for them when getting used to going to school. The less stressful it is, the more fun your child will have and the more they will enjoy it in the upcoming years as their schooling continues.

Also, if you choose to place your children in half-day preschool, you have more time to spend time with your child! During this time, you can play and enjoy the time together. It is well-known that the early childhood years are the most important in the growth and development of a person’s character so, by spending extra time with your child, you are ensuring that your child grows up and develops a strong character!

Full-Day Preschool

Full-day preschool is the most preferred schedule for working parents. While the parents are at work, the preschool functions as a daycare system that will care for the child. Furthermore, the child can socialize with other children and learn new things. There are many benefits to full-day preschool. One is the advantage when kindergarten starts. Children who are enrolled in full-day preschool are well-prepared for full-day kindergarten when it starts. Most elementary schools nowadays implement full-day kindergarten classes that children can struggle to adjust to without previous experience with it.

Usually, full-day preschool programs are more relaxed than half-day programs. This is typically because there is more time to complete all of the allotted time activities. So, children who thrive in a creative and social environment are urged to go to full-day preschool. With lots of activities and fun things to do during the day, children can learn and have fun with other kids.

Overall, there are no significant academic performance differences observed between children who go to half-day or full-day preschool. Both the children who go to half-day and those who go to full-day preschool score the same on academic tests and generally gain the same knowledge before the time they start kindergarten.

Schools around the world

Today we will analyze Singapore’s education system. Let’s start with pre-school education, look at kindergartens and finish with schools in Singapore.

Nurseries in Singapore

Early childhood education in Singapore starts at age 3 and lasts for 3 years: nursery, year one and year two (K1 and K2).

Kindergartens are everywhere in Singapore. They can occupy several rooms in a shopping center or a separate house in a prestigious residential area. However, a kindergarten, even in a separate building, is not a guarantee of having its own playground on the street, which is due to the high cost of land in Singapore.

Therefore, kindergarten children spend most of their time indoors. This disadvantage is fully compensated by the abundance of playgrounds in residential areas and parks, and since parents have to walk with their children, such a kindergarten encourages parents to spend time with their child in the fresh air, which, by and large, only benefits both.

There are no public kindergartens in Singapore. The device of preschool institutions is given to public organizations and private business. Therefore, in Singapore, a kindergarten is not uncommon, for example, at a Christian church, a mosque or a Hindu temple. But the largest network is established by the public foundation of the ruling People’s Action Party.

In kindergartens, children from the age of three learn to speak at least two languages, one of which is English. English is the main language of instruction in the vast majority of kindergartens in Singapore. The exception is kindergartens at some international schools, where the main languages of instruction are German, French, etc., and English is studied as a second language.

The standard program of kindergartens is teaching reading, counting, music and singing, modeling and drawing. Swimming and acting lessons, for example, may be offered for an additional fee. The quality of education is at a good level in all kindergartens and does not depend on the cost of education, which ranges from 100 Singapore dollars per month for half a day in a “party” kindergarten to almost 1800 for a full day in the prestigious EtonHouse.

The duration of a child’s stay in kindergarten, depending on the program, can be half a day or a full day. A “half day” is four or four and a half hours of study and play in the morning or afternoon. A full day in kindergarten lasts from 8 to 12 hours, from 7 am to 7 pm.

Schools in Singapore

The school year in Singapore coincides with the calendar year. It starts on January 2 and consists of four quarters of 10 weeks each. Between each quarter there are holidays. After the first and third quarters, the duration of the holidays is 10 days, after the second quarter (middle of the year) – four weeks, after the fourth (end of the school year) – almost a month and a half.

During the holidays, educational centers can offer intensive courses lasting 1-3 weeks, so even taking a break from the main activities, children can spend time usefully.

Children go to school at the age of 6. Education at the school is divided into three levels – primary (primary school), secondary (secondary school) and pre-university (pre-university education). This separation is also physical – institutions of different levels exist separately from each other.

Primary education in Singapore is compulsory. The program lasts 6 years and is divided into 2 parts: the first – fundamental – lasting 4 years, the second – orientation – lasting two years.

The overall aim of the elementary school is to provide a strong foundation in English, mother tongue and mathematics. At the end of elementary school, an exam is taken, which is called the “Primary School Leaving Examination” (PSLE).

All elementary schools follow the same program, perhaps with some additions, based on the capabilities of the school, for example: aesthetic education, physical education and sports, education of gifted children.

Secondary school follows. Based on the results of passing the exam, students are divided into courses: special (4-6 years), express (4 years), normal (academic) (5 years), normal (technical) (4 years), pre-professional (1-4 years). The best secondary school students can, without passing this exam, continue their preparation for the next level exam – GCE “A” (“advanced”) – as part of a comprehensive program of the Ministry of Education.

GCE Qualification “A” gives the right to enter the university. Thus, a comprehensive program links together secondary and pre-university education. Another way to get a GCE “A” qualification is to take a two-year course at a junior college or a three-year course at a polytechnics / centralized institute. All those who have completed the course of pre-university education are issued a School Leaving Certificate.

Performance is assessed on a combined alphanumeric scale: A1/A2 – Excellent, B3/B4 – Good, C5/C6 – Pass, D7 – Minimum Pass or Fail, E8/F9- unsatisfactory.

Academic achievement is assessed as follows: the points obtained are summed up according to the L1R5 system, where L1 is the first language, English or native language, and R5 is 5 subjects, which necessarily include one discipline from the exact sciences, as well as one humanitarian discipline (except for religious studies, native language or additional classes in circles).

The highest mark in any subject – A1 – is equal to 1 point, A2 – 2 points, and so on. The fewer points a student gets, the better. The optimal score is 6 – one point for the native language and each of the 5 disciplines. To enter an incomplete college, you must score no more than 20 points.
