My son studies at a paid Moscow school in the correspondence department.

We decided to take this step due to bullying by the class teacher and students in a regular school. The son was not a straight A student or even a shock student, he did not participate in olympiads, so he had no chance to study for free in a private school.

I chose an economical option for studying under the Federal State Educational Standard – this is a standard general education program for all schools in Russia. But many paid schools also prepare children for the International Baccalaureate, or IB program – it is focused on entering universities abroad. Usually you have to pay extra for this program.

In order to decide on a school for my son, I compiled a list of Moscow schools that treat children with respect and achieve high results when passing the Unified State Examination: I learned about all this from published data on school websites and parents’ reviews. In some of them, motivated children can study for free or at a discount.

School of the Center for Pedagogical Excellence

Features of the program. The school was created by the Center for Pedagogical Excellence, which coordinates both certain stages of the All-Russian Olympiad for schoolchildren and some list Olympiads of the Ministry of Education, and also prepares participants for the final stage of the All-Russia.

There are two directions in the school: developing classes and profile classes. In developing classes, children do not choose a narrow profile of education and pass all the subjects according to the GEF program, but they can supplement the curriculum with such subjects as financial literacy, time management or public speaking.

In the profile, the student chooses one of five routes: mathematical-informational, physical, socio-economic, social-humanitarian, natural-science. At the same time, profile training does not reduce the focus on compulsory subjects according to the Federal State Educational Standard, but deepens the student’s level of knowledge in specific subject areas.

Parental rights at the school

Students from other regions of the country can live on campus on school grounds. The cost of accommodation and three meals a day is paid separately – it costs 1100 R per day.

In addition to the classical full-time education, the school has a part-time department. Lessons are held in the format of online seminars: in addition to school teachers, they are taught by Olympiad coaches. Each student is assigned a tutor who monitors academic progress, answers parents’ questions and organizes extracurricular activities if several students live in the same city.

What to do. To enter the developmental department, you will need to pass a test with tasks in the Russian language, mathematics and general erudition. If the student has chosen a profile class, one more test will be added – in the chosen direction. And parents are invited to an interview with the school administration.

Exams are held remotely. The enrollment takes place in several waves: it starts in March and continues until August. If you didn’t manage to do it the first time, you can try your hand at the next wave. Winners and prize-winners of the regional and final stages of the All-Russian Olympiad for schoolchildren can enter the school without exams.

Children eligible for the Social Mobility program can study at school free of charge – these are the children of those who died in the line of military duty or became disabled of the first and second groups of parents, large and low-income families who have a Moscow residence permit.

Features of the program. The main goal of the “New School” is to teach children to be independent and not be afraid to make decisions in adult life. Teachers and tutors from elementary school develop in children the ability to learn, invent and complete their projects, make informed choices and interact with other people.

High school does not use the profiles of a standard school: before the 10th grade, students independently determine the subjects, special courses and levels of their assimilation. You can refuse optional subjects according to the Federal State Educational Standard.

Children study in subject and curatorial groups. At individual meetings, the tutor helps the student to form an educational request, highlight strengths and weaknesses, and also determine the skills that need to be developed.

What to do. Entrance tests are divided into several stages, which depend on the class. Upon admission, parents are first invited to an open day – this is a mandatory stage for newcomers.

How to transfer a child to another school

They also conduct subject diagnostics – an internal stage at which the school checks basic tests in mathematics and the Russian language.

At the end of the test, interviews are held with the parents and the child. Group meetings are held with children with a psychologist. And in a conversation with adults, the administration will understand whether the views of the family and the school on upbringing and education generally coincide. Both parents must be present at the meeting.

Families in a difficult financial situation can apply for a scholarship from the “Dar” fund: how much to allocate and for how long, the fund decides on an individual basis. The maximum scholarship will reduce the tuition fee to 13,000 R per month.

European Gymnasium

Features of the program. Education from the 1st grade combines two programs: the Russian Federal State Educational Standard and the International Baccalaureate program.

In elementary school, the emphasis is on the formation of interdisciplinary connections: the European Gymnasium believes that at this stage it is important to teach children to organize themselves, explore the world and interact with each other. In secondary school, students themselves choose a bias: scientific or language – in this case, classes will be in English.

After the 9th grade, students receive two documents: a high school diploma and an IB certificate, and in the 10th and 11th grades they already choose which exams they will prepare for – the USE or international ones, which will help them enter foreign universities.

Once a week, the child visits the tutor and together with him makes a plan for the next school days.
