      Glenwood Springs

      Hot Springs Pool

Among the many attractions in Glenwood Springs, the oldest and most famous is the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool. This world’s largest pool of mineral water from geothermal springs is 100 meters long and filled with water at a temperature of 34 °C. This is an ideal place for those who love active holidays and sports holidays: games, swimming or ski jumping. The second smaller pool with hot (40°C) water is equipped with benches and jacuzzi chairs installed under water, allowing you to completely relax. In spring, 4,400,000 cubic meters of hot mineral water flows into the pool from the Yampa spring every day! The Glenwood Hot Springs Pool is a must-visit attraction at any time of the year for those who are attracted to a vacation in the USA.

Glenwood Springs Resort has another geothermal marvel: the Yampah Spa and Vapor Steam Caves. Located east of Glenwood Hot Springs, the Steam Caverns are a rare natural phenomenon found in only a few other places in the world.

“Steam caves” were formed after the limestone layer was flooded by the waters of the Colorado River. Slightly acidic and sulphurous waters washed out large passages in porous rock. When the water receded, it left behind caves. Hot water from the Yampa spring flows through channels in the floor of the cave, creating natural underground steam baths.

Guests descend the stairs to experience the beneficial effects of mineral water vapor in a rocky, dimly lit chamber with marble benches. Nearby is a cold water faucet, which allows you to cool off if it gets very hot.

      The splendor of geological formations

Like the Steam Caverns, 550 million years of mountain building and erosion have left their mark on the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park.

Tours of the park’s caves are available at any time of the year and are great for people of all ages who choose to be active in the USA. The guide takes visitors underground, where stalagmites, stalactites and crystalline formations enchant and awe guests. The main “highlights” of the tour are a visit to the “Barn”, a five-story hall, and the “King’s Rows”, a long cave adorned with hundreds of sparkling geological formations.

Of course, holidays in the US are a roller coaster. Visitors to the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, home to the Rock Climber roller coaster, the tallest roller coaster ride in North America, are in for an even greater thrill! Cliffs passing before your eyes, breathtaking falls bring smiles on the faces of children and adults, but young at heart. Other attractions in the western-style park include Colorado’s longest alpine slide and giant canyon swings.

      Outdoor sports

Glenwood Springs has two rivers. The Colorado River flows through Glenwood Canyon, and the fast, deep waters of its tributary Roaring Fork descend from Aspen. Several companies specializing in sports recreation provide visitors with all the necessary equipment for safe rafting on the river.

The long stretch of Colorado Gold Medal Water is part of the Roaring Fork tributary. This section of the river from Glenwood Springs to Carbondale is famous for its large rainbow and brook trout, which average 30 to 46 centimeters in length. For advice, lessons and help with the tour, you can hire an experienced guide.

One of the best ways for visitors to explore Glenwood Springs is by bike. Thanks to the many bike paths, cycling is an active holiday, an easy way to stretch and see the sights at the same time. The best time for cycling is during the summer and autumn months when the air humidity is low and there is plenty of sun. Several companies offer bike rentals and routes for visitors to choose from.

Hanging Lake is the terminus of one of the many hiking trails in Glenwood. The pristine waters of the waterfall flow into the lake located in Glenwood Canyon. The lake was declared a National Natural Landmark in 2011. The trail climbs steeply to 274 meters in less than 2 kilometers, but hikers who enjoy the outdoors can take a break in one of the many shady spots along the trail.

History of Glenwood – Wild West

The most infamous resident of Glenwood Springs was the dentist turned gambler John Holliday “Doc”. This shooter came to prominence after a shootout off the O.K. corral. He came to Glenwood Springs for the same reason many other people do: the hot springs. But unlike most other people, Holliday suffered from tuberculosis, which could not be cured. He is buried in Linwood Cemetery with Harvey Logan, aka “Kid Curry”, the most violent member of Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch gang. Learn more about Glenwood Springs’ rich past at the Frontier Historical Museum.
