Formerly Gingerbread Day School, Gingerbread Christian Academy now has new owners and a brand new look. Please call for more information or feel free to stop by to see us. We do participate in the Early Learning Coalition program.

Annotation

The article is devoted to the study of the existence of the Tver gingerbread tradition and is based on historical, folklore and ethnographic materials. The first mention of the Tver gingerbread tradition dates back to the 1620s. In the following centuries, an active growth of gingerbread production was noted. By the end of the XIX century. Tver gingerbread was known not only in Russia, but also abroad. Tver printed gingerbread won at international fairs, in London and Paris, Tver merchants kept shops selling printed gingerbread. Changes in the political system of the country at the beginning of the 20th century. led to the decline of the Tver gingerbread tradition. Now there is no trace left of the former greatness of the Tver printed gingerbread. However, we still have at our disposal evidence of the widespread use of the printed gingerbread in calendar and family rituals, as well as in the secular life of a person. Gingerbread entered a wide circle of the human life cycle and became a symbolic equivalent of the ancient ritual bread attribute: grains, pancakes, pies, and loaves. Along with archaic ritual baking, it marks almost all sacred actions in a person’s life, accompanies him at all stages of his life path. The participation of printed gingerbread in wedding rituals is most fully represented in Tver folklore and ethnographic materials. It seems that the study of the printed gingerbread from different cultural positions will allow us to restore another lost page in the history of our traditional culture.
