There are two long distance trains in Australia. The first of them, the route of which is shown on the map in red, is called the Indian Pacific. Last time I told about the trip on it . The second train, with a “yellow” route, is called The Ghan.

Where did the name The Ghan come from? In the century before last, Afghan camel drivers rendered great assistance in the development of the center of Australia. So when the railway line was built from Port Augusta to Alice Springs in 1929, the train connecting these cities was called the “Afghan Express”. In colloquial speech, the name was shortened to Afghan, and then to Ghan. And this word, Ghan, took root so much that it was decided to give this name to the train officially.

For seventy-five years, the Gun ran between Adelaide and Alice Springs until the rail line was finally extended north to Darwin in 2004. Now the train crosses the whole country from north to south, and is one of the hallmarks of Australia.

The Ghan runs once a week, year-round, with a break during the hottest period from mid-December to mid-January. Well, let’s go!..

                          January 17, 2018

Darwin train station is a little busy. The first train after a month break to Alice Springs and Adelaide, the famous The Ghan, is boarding. People are photographed against the background of the locomotive. Drones fly over the train. It consists of forty-two wagons, and its length is a whole kilometer. Therefore, passengers are transported along the platform by bus.

The Ghana cars are the same as those on the Indian Pacific train. Most of the compartments are double bunk with shower and toilet.

10.00 – let’s go. While the “red center” and does not smell. Here, in the north of Australia, the hot tropics.

Every three or four cars have their own lounge car with a bar and a dining car. The train is, as it were, divided into several sections, each of which has its own team led by a restaurant manager. This person is responsible not only for the restaurant, but also for all other activities of his wards – from cleaning the compartment to signing up for excursions.

Imagine my surprise when the restaurant manager of our “car group” turned out to be Rosaleen, whom we met two weeks ago on the Indian Pacific train! Rosalyn was no less surprised than I was at the new meeting. In general, people working on long-distance Australian trains always do their job with full dedication. But even against their background, Rosalyn is fantastic. She knows all the passengers of her cars by name, knows how to predict the desire of everyone and find her own good joke for everyone. This cannot be learned; this is an innate and very outstanding talent.

Three meals a day in the restaurant, as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, are included in the ticket price. The food is very tasty, although sometimes exotic for a foreigner. Last time we ate camel meat, and this time we were served kangaroo meat and crocodile cutlets. For Australians, these dishes are quite common, and – yes, in this country they eat kangaroo meat like pork in our country, and they don’t worry about it.

First stop – Katherine. Excursions in this town, as well as in Alice Springs, are included in the ticket. The most popular excursion is a cruise along the almost mountain river Katherine. And the most unusual excursion, provided for a surcharge, is a flight over this river and its surroundings by plane.

I choose the plane. And here we are flying in a four-seat Cessna with pilot Josh over the Katherine River, and pleasure boats with my railroad companions go along it.

The places here are beautiful – waterfalls, rapids, gorges… There are also dry rivers. Being on the ground in forty-degree heat is quite difficult, but looking at this beauty from an airplane is the very thing.

Flying north over Nitmilek and Kakadu National Parks, almost half way to Darwin, where we started this morning.

Rain wall ahead. Well, says Josh, why not wash the plane.

In general, it was wonderful, and the hour and a half of the flight flew by very quickly. I have been thinking about getting a pilot’s license for a long time in order to fly wherever I want … If I do this, I will definitely go behind the helm of the Cessna on a round-the-world flight.

And on the train – evening, dinner, bar and pleasant conversationalists. In such trains, you quickly converge with various interesting people from different parts of the world. This time we even formed our own friendly company, in which Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Russia were represented.

                          January 18, 2018

                          Morning. We’re approaching Alice Springs.

Alice Springs is a city of 25,000 people located almost in the very center of Australia. It began in the 19th century as a small village at the telegraph station in the center of the caravan route. It is very hot and dry here, and it would seem that there are no conditions for life. But there is a never-ending spring nearby, which once became the reason for choosing this place to create a settlement.

Until 2004, Alice Springs was the terminus. Trains came here from the south, from Adelaide.

In Alice Springs, you can choose to tour the city or even hike in nature, but again I chose flying. We’ll fly over the outskirts of Alice Springs. At the airport of this place remote from the world, a Boeing-777, which had gone bankrupt from Vim-Avia, arrived here for storage.

Another four-seater Cessna, in which we will fly with pilot Rev over the desert center of Australia.

Flying over Alice Springs, we admire our long, long train. Try to find it in the photo:

There is a steppe fire ahead. We fly up to him very close, and the unpressurized cabin of the Cessna is filled with the smell of burning.

An hour and a half flight passes over deserted, lifeless, but still beautiful places: hills, gorges and ancient dry rivers. This is the center of Australia, which seemed almost unattainable and uninhabitable two centuries ago.

We return to the train. The second part of the journey, from Alice Springs to Adelaide, is the historic Ghana route. Another stop is planned for the evening – in Manguri, for a walk under the stars along the desert steppe.

Pretty beautiful cliffs begin within the city. Sometimes the train “crawls” into narrow gorges.

We have lunch, spend time with interesting conversations, admire the beautiful steppe-desert. Black Russian and White Russian cocktails contain vodka, and everyone wants to drink this drink with me (when else will you drink vodka with a Russian?). Not much vodka in the cocktail. Fellow travelers say they saw a dingo dog through the train window.

The rivers here are unique: they are the oldest in the world, and… completely without water.

We pass the playful Iron Man monument erected in 1980 by the road builders in honor of the laying of the millionth sleeper. Why in 1980 if the road was built in 1929? The fact is that half a century after the opening, the old road was dismantled and a new one was built, with a different gauge and passing away from the old one.

We stop at the junction. This is a common thing here – the whole road is single-track, and sometimes you have to stop and wait for oncoming trains. But this parking is delayed for a long time: due to a breakdown of the locomotive, the oncoming freight train is moving at low speed. And for two hours we observe such a picture from one side …

… and the same on the other:

Due to delay, parking in Manguri was canceled.
