Q&A with Mr. Gabriel

Tell us about your experience working with young children?

I started working with children as a child care professional in my home 15 years ago, and I have been caring for children ever since. Opening my own child care program in my home gave me the opportunity to create the nurturing, happy environment that I think is so important. I especially love to take children outside to explore and play, but the truth is that so many parts of the day and the week bring me a lot of joy. Through it all, I focus on exploration and imagination.
One of the best parts of working with children is watching them explore and discover. The work is incredibly rewarding, especially when I think about how I’ve prepared children for pre-K. It’s such a gift to guide the children in my program as they grow.

What are the key areas of focus at your daycare?

Having a small group of children in my home-based program is great because I want them all to receive lots of individual attention, and this setting makes that possible. I use my knowledge and prior experiences to tailor programming to individual children’s needs, and I focus on allowing children to express themselves. We follow a daily routine that can vary according to child age and interest. Beginning with drop-off and free play, most days include curriculum-based lessons and activities, dramatic play, music and movement, outdoor play, and arts and crafts. My favorite time is outdoor play. I love to see their personalities and interests develop and shine through.
I want parents to know that I treat all the children as if they were my own. We’re all one big family here, and that includes the parents of the children in my program.

Can you tell us a bit about your home environment?

I have dedicated the finished basement of my Mattapan home to my program. The space is inviting and comforting because I know this becomes like a second home to many children. The organization of the space facilitates our daily schedule, and there are special areas for dramatic play, outdoor play, free play, circle time, and reading. We also spend lots of time outside playing in my fenced-in yard and walking together through the quiet neighborhood.

Let’s find a really good daycare for you

Get your own recommendations based on your preferences, daily routine, and what matters most to you.

Your family is unique to you, but some of your questions might not be. 😉 Here’s what most parents want to know when starting out.

What is NeighborSchools?

Hey there, nice to meet you 👋 We’re a new-ish startup that helps new-ish parents find daycare.

We know how hard finding good child care can be – especially for first-time parents. But really good care is what gives you the peace of mind to go back to work and feel confident that your child is getting the stimulation, socialization, and support they need to learn and grow.

So we created NeighborSchools to make this piece of parenthood a whole lot easier. We say “easier” because, let’s be honest, it’s still a big thing to figure out, but working together we can help you find some good options, understand the whole process, and choose a program you’ll feel really good about.

How’s it work?

Most first-time parents don’t know exactly what they’re looking for, so we created a simple survey that will ask you questions about your lifestyle, your daily routines, and your preferences for child care. We’ll then share 3 personalized recommendations that we think might be a good fit. We’ll also give you a timeline that maps out when we would suggest you start touring programs, choose a daycare, and pay a deposit to secure a spot. Your timeline is based on when you want to start care – so you set the pace, and you decide when you’ve found the right match.

Is there a cost?

Nope. Our daycare recommendation service is free for parents. The other half of our business is helping these small-scale daycares with software and services that handle all their administrative tasks, like online contracting, payment processing, and licensing requirements. Before NeighborSchools, services like these were only designed for large corporate child care centers, and part of our mission is to level the playing field for small, independent child care programs. That’s why we picked the name NeighborSchools – we’re all about making child care more personal, more human, and more equitable for the incredible individuals who do this work and care for our children.

How do I know if I’m ready to take the survey?

Generally, if you’re here, you’re ready. The survey lets us give you 3 recommendations to consider, but it’ll also help you better understand what factors to consider, and what questions to be asking right now. It’s simple things like where you live, your child’s date of birth, when you want to start care, and if you have any preferences around program philosophy or language of instruction. If you’re planning 6+ months ahead, it’s a great way to get started, and if you’re hoping to start daycare in the next 2-4 months, it’s definitely time to get started. Click here to start the survey.

How do I know if a daycare has openings?

Each program has a limited number of spots for each age range, so we need to know your schedule and child’s age before we can share availability. The survey covers these basics, as well as factors like drop-off and pick-up times to make sure that recommended programs fit your daily routine. Once we know your child’s age and schedule we can share rates and costs as well.

More questions? Text or email – we’re here to help.

We’re online Monday – Friday from 8am to 6pm Eastern.

Garcia Marquez, Gabriel – PERSONA TASS

Born March 6, 1927 Gabriel Garcia Marquez (Spanish Gabriel García Márquez, full name – Gabriel José de la Concordia Garcia Marquez) was born March 6, 1927 in the city of Aracataca in the Department of Magdalena in northern Colombia. In 1929 his parents left in search of work in the neighboring department of Sucre, while he remained in Aracataca with his maternal grandparents. Subsequently, many of the writer’s works were based on stories told by his grandfather, a retired colonel and a veteran of the civil Thousand Days War 1899-1902, as well as the legends and myths that his grandmother knew. In 1936, after the death of his grandfather, he began to live with his parents.

Education and the beginning of literary activity
Garcia Marquez studied at the Jesuit College “San José” (municipality of Barranquilla), in 1940 he entered the National College of Zipaquira (near the Colombian capital of Bogota).

In 1947 he became a law student at Columbia National University (Bogotá) and at the same time began working as a correspondent for the capital’s newspaper Espectador. It was there that his first stories were published (“The Third Humility” in 1947 and “Eve inside her cat” in 1948). In 1948 he continued his legal education at the University of Cartagena. He wrote articles for the Cartagena newspaper “Universal”. In 1950 he decided to quit his studies and focus on journalism. In 1950-1952 worked in the newspaper “Eraldo” in Barranquilla, published under the pseudonym Septimus. He was an active member of the Barranquilla Group, an association of local writers and journalists.
In 1954 he returned to Bogota and became a member of the editorial board of the newspaper “Espektador”. At first he wrote critical notes on feature films, then he became famous as a reporter.
In 1955, when his story “Falling Leaves” was published (the first work from the cycle about the magical town of Macondo), Garcia Márquez declared himself as a serious prose writer. His next work – a series of chronicles based on real events “The Tale of a Man Who Did Not Drown at Sea” (1955) – was censored by the government of the military dictator Gustavo Rojas Pinilla (1953-1957) due to the unfavorable presentation of the Colombian authorities (it was not fully published until 1970). G.).
Life abroad
To avoid government disapproval, the Espectador sent Marquez as its own correspondent to Europe, where he spent three years. He traveled to Italy, Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and finally settled in Paris. Subsequently, he also worked in Venezuela. After the victory of the Cuban Revolution on January 1, 1959, for some time he headed the new Latin American news agency Prensa Latina in Havana, and in 1961 he was a correspondent for Prensa Latina in New York.
Then spent several years in Mexico. It was there that he wrote his famous epic novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude” – the story of the emergence, flourishing and decline of the Buendia family in the town of Macondo.
In 1967-1975 lived in Barcelona. One of his neighbors was the Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa (they were friends until a quarrel in 1976, after which they did not communicate for more than 30 years). During these years, Garcia Marquez showed himself as a supporter of socialist and revolutionary ideas – he supported the socialist president Salvador Allende in Chile, the Sandinista revolution in Nicaragua, and the struggle for the liberation of Angola. In 1974 he founded the left-wing political magazine “Alternativa”, which was published in Bogota (lasted until 1980), actively participated in the “Russell Tribunal for the Investigation of War Crimes Committed in Vietnam” (founded by philosophers Bertrand Russell and Jean-Paul Sartre). Since 1975 he lived in Mexico. Returning to Colombia in 1981, the writer resumed his collaboration with the Espectador newspaper. A year later, he was accused of having links with the guerrillas of the left “April 19 Movement” and was forced to once again leave for Mexico.
Nobel Prize and later life
In October 1982, Gabriel Garcia Márquez was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature “for his novels and short stories in which fantasy and reality, combined, reflect the life and conflicts of an entire continent.” While receiving the award, he gave the famous speech “The Loneliness of Latin America”, in which he pointed out the uniqueness of the historical, political and social development of the region, which makes Latin America unlike the rest of the world.
After presenting this award, Colombian President Belisario Betancur allowed Garcia Márquez to return to his homeland, guaranteeing his safety and security. In 1983, the writer arrived in Colombia, but did not stay there for long. In subsequent years, he traveled a lot, continued to write scripts, novels, and memoirs. He has repeatedly mediated peace negotiations between the government of Colombia and representatives of various rebel groups, including the April 19 Movement, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). He began to live permanently in Colombia only at the beginning of the 1990s
In 1994, he founded the New Latin American Journalism Foundation in Cartagena (Colombia), the purpose of which is to promote democracy and quality independent journalism in the region. In 2013, the Foundation established the International Prize for Journalism. Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
Back in 1992, Garcia Marquez had an operation to remove a lung tumor. In 1999, he was diagnosed with lymphoma (blood cancer). He underwent several operations in the US and Mexico and a long course of treatment. The writer spent the last years of his life in Mexico. At the end of March 2014, he was hospitalized due to a lung infection and dehydration. He died on April 17, 2014 at his home in Mexico City at the age of 88. In accordance with the will of Garcia Marquez, his ashes were transported from Mexico City to Cartagena.

Awards
In addition to the Nobel Prize, Garcia Marquez was awarded the Esso Prize (for the novel The Bad Hour, Colombia, 1961), the International Literary Prize. Romulo Gallegos (for “One Hundred Years of Solitude”, 1972) and others. He had insignia from different countries: the Order of the Legion of Honor (France, 1981), the Order of the Aztec Eagle (Mexico, 1982), the Order of Honor (Russia, 2012) for his contribution to strengthening friendship between the peoples of the Russian Federation and Latin America.
In 2010, the house-museum of Gabriel Garcia Marquez was opened in his hometown of Aracataca.

Creativity
Gabriel Garcia Marquez is one of the most prominent representatives of magical realism – a trend in literature (mainly Latin American), which combines elements of reality and fiction, everyday and fabulous in order to more fully convey the originality of Latin American history and culture. The central theme of his books is loneliness, alienation from other people, overcoming injustice. In his works, he organically combined Colombian myths, psychologism and everyday details of everyday life. Among the most famous works of the writer (in addition to those mentioned) is the story “No one writes to the Colonel” (1961), Chronicle of the Declared Death (1981), novels The Bad Hour and Autumn of the Patriarch (1975), Love in the Time of Cholera (1984), The General in His Labyrinth (1989), autobiography Live, to talk about life” (2002). The last published book is the story “Remembering my sad whores” (2004).

Family
Married to Mercedes Barcha Pardo since 1958; father of two sons (Rodrigo and Gonzalo).
