Locust success enables Fun-N-Learning expansion

By Sandy Hatley

Publication: Locust Community Magazine Spring 2017

Fun-N-Learning Day Care Center now has two locations. In addition to its West Main Street facility in Locust, they recently opened a second facility in Mount Pleasant.

The family owned and operated business has been in operation for 22 years. Originally opened by Douglas and Carolyn Crayton, the four-star licensed facility is now operated by their oldest daughter, Crystal C. Wages.

Crystal started to work part-time at Fun-N-Learning in 1998. She became full-time in 2003 and the director in 2012. She credits the success of the facility to the dedicated staff at the center and the wonderful parents who support them.

“Our primary focus is to keep the children safe and make them feel loved while giving them an opportunity to explore,” the director explained.

Fun-N-Learning offers quality care and individual attention in a creative, safe and stimulating environment. The staff provides hands-on activities that promote emerging skills development while allowing the students to explore and play in a learning atmosphere.

The state-licensed child care facilities feature a developmentally appropriate and educationally-based curriculum for children.

Using Creative Curriculum, the state approved lessons allow teachers to tailor their lessons to meet individual needs.

“It’s hard to find people who will love your children like their own, and I feel like the staff at Fun-N-Learning truly loves them as much as I do,” said parent Laura Shadron. “This alleviates any stress and enables me to go to work without worrying about them because I know they’re safe and secure in a nurturing environment.”

Wages stressed she is a big proponent of teachable moments.

“The key is to make what the students are learning fun, so that they want to know more,” Wages said. “If we can pique the student’s curiosity, they are more inclined to retain the information presented to them.

The Locust site was renovated in 2008, adding two additional classrooms, larger foyer, teacher’s area and an inside play room, bringing the footage to 4,500 square feet.

The Mount Pleasant center, located at 4227 Mt. Pleasant Road South, was totally remodeled inside and out in 2016, giving the entire 4,450-square-foot facility an updated look and feel.

Both locations are open weekdays 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The day cares serve 6-week-olds up to 13-year-olds. Currently, the Locust center employs nine teachers and serves 70 children while the Mount Pleasant center has seven instructors and 30 children.

All the teachers have degrees in Early Childhood Education or are working toward obtaining their degree.

Both Fun-N-Learning sites have space available for new enrollees. For more information, call the Locust facility at (704) 888-
5683 or the Mount Pleasant facility at (704) 788-6611 or email [email protected].

“We look forward to assisting families in the area in nurturing the development of the next generation,” Wages said.

Traveling with Children – Winter Edition

A childcare center may not be the first thing you’d expect at a ski lodge. Small World Child Care center in Mammoth Lakes, California, is equipped with everything you’d find at any daycare facility. Managing the Christmas Excitement

As the big day approaches, parents pace may change from fast to frantic, the stores become ever crowded and the sheer noise of the season can become deafening. The child moves from bewilderment and excitement to being overwhelmed and scared. Rather than enjoying their child’s joy, parents may find themselves managing their child’s behaviour……

The Daily Walk

Many years ago I decided to add a daily walk around our neighborhood to our morning schedule. We started out small by walking around our long block. We clocked it in the car and found that it was six-tenth of a mile. That took about seventeen to twenty minutes depending on the skill set and age of the walkers…..

Transporting Daycare Kids

I know there are many types of agreements between parents and providers when it comes to having children in the provider’s vehicle. There are parents who want it for their kids and many who pay providers to transport their child to and from school and preschool. Some providers transport their own children to school and have field trips as a major selling point of their business…….

Edutainment – entertainment and education

Education and entertainment have a long but ambiguous relationship. At first glance, it may seem that education and entertainment have different goals, but in fact they have a lot in common.

Perhaps the main reason for this competitive tension is that education and entertainment have different goals. Education is aimed at fostering maturity, responsibility and gaining knowledge. What about entertainment? Designed for entertainment. But how then to connect them?

Education and entertainment often intersect, and then we can enjoy fun and effective learning. The clearest evidence of this can be found in educational toys.

A growing number of scientific studies confirm that some games can be not only educational, but also very nutritious!

Alphabet, numbers and words

Learning doesn’t have to be tedious and routine work – it can be very interesting and even nutritious. It can be difficult for toddlers to learn the alphabet and numbers by memorization.

Alphabet and number cookies solve this problem. During a snack, a mother can not only feed the baby, but also freely talk about letters and numbers. And even make words together with the baby.

The shaped cookies serve the same purpose. Vehicles, hearts, animals… It will be much easier for the baby to memorize the names in the exciting process of eating and learning.

Sports

In primary and secondary schools, physical education and sports can teach students all sorts of important lessons, such as teamwork, physical fitness, self-discipline, goal setting, body awareness, coordination, communication, and healthy self-esteem and hard work. And for many schoolchildren, playing sports is a good remedy for stress.

Young children love to learn by playing. It can be said that this is their most natural way of learning. Almost all public and private schools are already aware of the benefits of sports for education, and research confirms this. Schoolchildren who play sports have a better mood, less stress and better learning outcomes.

Young children need to be taught a love for sports from childhood. Our Sport Mini Cookies allow kids to explore sports and choose their favorite activity for the future.

Logic

Timeless and suitable for most ages, the puzzles contain an intriguing problem to solve. It is very beneficial for the development of children.

Puzzles are an educational toy for toddlers (average age 3-5) because they help to train dexterity and logical thinking. But puzzles are also useful for older children (and adults) as a therapeutic form of brain training that engages memory, fine motor skills, and concentration.

An excellent solution for confectionery brands is the combination of the development of logic, play and nutrition. The baby not only develops, but also receives the necessary nutrients. Our novelty – animal puzzles – perfectly cope with this task.

Cookie sorters are also a great “task” for kids. The kid needs to correctly correlate the shape of the cookie with the hole in the box. So the kid begins to distinguish between shapes and develops his logical skills. And of course don’t forget to enjoy delicious cookies!

A good example is a sorter toy:

Edutainment –
education or entertainment?

Edutainment
on entertainment and the formation of primary interest in the subject with obtaining
enjoyment of the learning process and a strong interest in the learning process.

In the context of the development of modern
technologies, especially the Internet, the concept of
“continuing education”, or “lifelong education”. continuous
education assumes that a person throughout his life
improves his knowledge and skills. In this regard, new
technological solutions that help a person in the implementation of this
concept, one of these technologies can be considered edutainment. So edutainment is a blend from
two words ‘education’ and ‘entertainment’. If we combine these two
words / process, we get education with elements of entertainment or entertainment in
basis of education. The Cambridge dictionary defines
‘edutainment’ as ‘the process of entertaining people at the
same time as you are teaching them something’, suggesting the process of teaching someone through the process of having fun. While the technology itself is not new
approach to learning, but it is the development of the digital environment that allows you to see
at it from a different angle. What is new is that
technological advances have created an entirely new category of tools and
programs for learning that are associated with a new interest in the use
educational technologies to improve teaching and learning.

Main target
edutainment – increase motivation for learning, make the process of assimilation
knowledge more exciting, diverse, accessible. Psychologists say that
in the form of a game, information is easier to digest and remember. Education
becomes a game in which to win is to learn something. Any victory
brings pleasure, and when the gain is knowledge, then it is also useful.

Thanks
modern innovative and interactive technologies in almost any
situation, any process or mechanism can be modeled in educational
purposes. Engaging students in an environment that mimics the area of interest to them
knowledge is one of the most important advantages of edutainment.

As part of the edutainment technology
there were several approaches . According to one of them edutainment
is interpreted as an educational practice with the involvement of multimedia
technologies and entertainment practices. The second approach defines the analyzed
technology as a form of educational material, the purpose of which is
draw attention to socially important issues. Another approach to learning
topics – focusing on the virtual environment itself edutainment than, according to
in essence, are digital educational projects.

This strategy takes various forms in
according to what is being taught and the different interests of the children’s groups. AT
Primarily, edutainment includes combinations of audio and video in the classroom or outside the classroom.
events. Other important elements of this approach include games as part of
learning or toys, radio and podcasts, movies and television, or visiting
museums.

Considered
that edutainment absorbed the best of such areas as pedagogy,
psychology, computer science. Edutainment as an independent educational technology
based on the following principles :

The principle of connection between theory and practice, because
properly organized training and education flows from life itself and
is inextricably linked to it.

The principle of succession, since
a person has information and knowledge only when he has a clear understanding of the system
interrelated concepts, the sequence of which is determined by the internal
the logic of the educational material and the cognitive abilities of the students themselves

The principle of accessibility of education is determined
age and individual characteristics of students, organization of educational
process, applied teaching methods.

Below is
Classification of EDUTIENCE tools:

I would like to note the advantages
in the process of teaching children:

• Active learning: Edutainment helps
teachers to involve children in the learning process. Instead of holding them
attention and busyness over time, the alternative may be more
productive short period of time. Students have access to more
the amount of information in the shortest time. Homework will be very
fun for kids if you watch videos or play a fun game. Apart from
basic education, children can also develop certain skills in early
age. However, the teacher must provide timely assistance in the guidance
and help students choose the right set of tools such as videos,
games and apps.

• Real World Exploration: Children
biologically programmed to create their own innovations. Education
through the game satisfies their basic interests, gives them more opportunities for
learning and understanding the world around. Make training sessions better
possible by spending time imaginative play through which they learn more about themselves and
other things going on around. For example, instead of limiting them
within the four walls of the classroom, transform learning time for real-world research
the world with the help of trips on excursions to the studied places.

• Experiential education: This is
kind of experiential learning in which students will actively play while learning
new ideas or concepts. Instead of studying in the classroom, children would like to study in
children’s museums or visit theaters or parks to explore nature.
Adventure education and outdoor learning are key
forms of learning in edutainment, which makes learning more exciting.

• Improves positivity: There are many
positive characters in videos and online games that children can easily
contact. These video characters that promote hard work
purposefulness, humanity and teamwork tend to be
part of the study sessions. This will gradually lead to positivity in children, and
most of them consider special characters as models for
imitations that really inspire how they grow up.

• Intellectual stimulation: Instead of
boring classroom learning and memorization, children give a more favorable response
for gaming and video content. This educational strategy can be successful
and help improve their intellectual stimulation with gamification directed
on enhancing their thinking ability, problem solving.

• Educational games: There are sufficient
a selection of games that encourage different types of learning among children. Games with
movement control is a great motivation for them to engage in physical and
educational activities. While some games promote
skills development among students, other games are designed to encourage
constructive thinking and creating curiosity. There are special applications
that take them through a world of puzzles, rhymes and stories. The way children learn
about different subjects, depends a lot on the games they play. Such
elements like images, sounds and animation can easily affect
feelings of the child and win his interest in learning.

• Increased Attention: Get the student’s attention
can be a tough job and that goes a long way when it comes to
teaching. This shorter form of learning strategy is a good one.
solution to win attention and give you the opportunity to get more
information.

• Portable learning: learning becomes
possible, regardless of where the student is located. Thus, learning is not
limited to classroom activities, and teachers may try to use
learning opportunities in your spare time at home or outside. Children can
watch these videos when they are at home or when they are in transport,
or even while traveling. Currently, there are many web series,
videos aimed at engaging children on the road while improving their
knowledge base.

• Improving social skills: This
child-friendly strategy aims to expand social
interaction, which, in turn, plays a good role in increasing their
social skills, which is vital for their development and
growth in society. This kind of open learning helps children grow up with many
extracurricular skills and set your goals for many achievements.

Children always want to play more,
as they love the world of fun and entertainment. This innovative educational
strategy is designed to get the best of their interests for
the enjoyment of productive learning. Today’s education is full
experiments, which makes the learning process more effective and
productive. The idea of edutainment always motivates children to learn new things without
loss of fun.

Pros and cons
using edutainment technology in the classroom.

Skepticism about the use
learning tools and content includes the idea that learners
so accustomed to flashy, polished entertainment products that we
we run the risk of forcing them to rely on such models for learning.

Other criticisms of

• Device use can be distracting
some students from learning.

• Not all students will have equal
access to technology in or out of the classroom.

• Strong reliance on technology and gamification
can lead to a decrease in human interpersonal communication between students.

• Or even the belief that education is not
should be “fun”.

But, on the other hand, in addition to helping
students in developing “media literacy” skills that are absolutely
necessary for success in the digital age, learning methods can also improve
learning in many other ways. For example:

• Students can study anywhere as
as mobile technology.

• Entertainment during training can
help children really participate and interact in the learning process

• Carefully selected online portals provide
students access to endless information.

• Practical training attracts
students and inspires young imaginations.

How edutainment products can be used
in a foreign language class?

Quests –
arrange your lessons in the format of a quest, where students need to get
clues, find out the truth, find a hidden treasure, get out of somewhere and so
Further.

Embody
digital objects to life using augmented reality (AR). AR tools
enable you to create digital objects in a space where you
interact every day.

Use Youtube channels as a resource for lesson materials (for example, Dinasaur
Gogo, Magic English, Muzzy in Gondoland, Dora the Explorer, The Cat in the
hat).

Organize
virtual tours. You can always visit a new city using Google Maps or, using interactive technology, visit almost any
peace museum. You can always make a travel itinerary, find specific
places in the city, such as a store, a library.

role-playing
Games are the perfect chance to not only practice dialogue, but also boost your creativity.
Ask students to create a formal/informal conversation (which is not based
in the given examples). Students can use household items.
Play mini scenes using, improvised or pre-prepared
material.

Usage
interactive materials (clickable). Clickability has already become part of our
life. Today’s students find it difficult to imagine reality without
smartphones. QR codes for memes, watching vlogs and blogs, and
using social media will be a great way to get their attention.
Applications and web resources play a huge role. These can be Quizziz.com, Kahoot, Learning.apps that allow you to test,
involving children in the learning process, as well as adding a competitive aspect.
Tasks can have an infinite number of options, be limited in
time. Also, tests can be used at home, as self-monitoring.
or to repeat material.

View
instructional videos such as TED talks or Live worksheets, viewing assignments
movie or cartoon. Listening and playing songs.

Edutainment is
not just education and entertainment, it is attraction, education, entertainment and
passion with the help of various means of education and taking into account certain
psychological needs of students. Now there are many ways to organize classes with
using edutainment technology, it is impossible to describe them within the framework of one
articles. In this regard, I would like to note that the choice of technology by each
by a particular teacher is based on an analysis of the pedagogical situation,
taking into account the amount of time, the levels of preparedness of students, technical
the equipment of the class and students, the level of preparedness of the teacher himself.

Despite their
popularity, an important issue is the balance between education and entertainment, because
do not forget that the learning process is primarily
education(education).
