About the Provider
Hugs Kollege Inc – Bronx NY School-Age Child Care
Description: Freedom Montessori School in Chantilly, Virginia was founded in 2010 to bring a personal and traditional montessori educational method to children between the ages of 2 to 6 years old. And second we offer flexible programming to meet the unusual and hectic schedules of parents as they juggle work, family, commuting, and various other commitments. Please contact us to schedule a time to visit our school and meet our lead primary teachers, Ms. Lindsey and Ms. Suzanne along with our lead toddler teacher, Ms. Ruth.

Quite often we hear: “Montessori? Oh no! It doesn’t suit us. There, the child is given complete freedom.
How can a child choose his own field of activity? But what about control, rigid organization, detailed planning of the lesson? Doesn’t this notorious freedom lead to chaos, permissiveness, lack of results?
Probably, such thoughts come to the mind of many people who first hear about the pedagogy of Maria Montessori. If that were the case, her system would not have produced the phenomenal results that are legendary. Children in Montessori classes demonstrate good reading and writing skills even before the onset of the school period, they are organized, accurate, respect the work of other children, and, most importantly, maintain a love of learning in the course of classes. How is this possible with a free upbringing?
In recent years, Montessori centers have been rapidly developing in Russia. More and more parents are getting acquainted with the unique method of the Italian teacher and scientist Maria Montessori, who offered a new look at raising a child. The uniqueness of her system, first of all, lies in the fact that the child chooses his own path of development, and the teacher is not a dictator for him, but an assistant and adviser.
Such a view, representing a new system of open education, differs significantly from the traditional methods that we are used to in Russian kindergartens and schools of the Soviet and post-Soviet periods.
Every parent will agree that their child is unique. How can he express his uniqueness, what should be the environment of education, which would take into account the peculiarities of the development of the personality of each child? The Montessori system forms a special prepared environment that stands on three pillars:
attitude towards the child as a self-developing unique personality;
special didactic materials with the possibility of self-control, when the child himself sees his mistakes;
teaching assistant, mentor, observer.
Coming to the classroom, the child himself chooses the material for work. What does it give? Freedom of choice, personal motivation leads to interest, enthusiasm, immersion in the process of mastering the material. In the independent choice of activity, the child manifests his will, and does not suppress it, obeying the requirements of an authoritarian teacher, as is the case in the system of classical education. The child does not need to be forced, he himself decided, he himself became interested. As a result, the process of mastering the material occurs naturally. Thus, freedom is understood here not as chaos, but as a path for creative self-development.
E. Fromm divided the concept of “freedom” into “freedom from” and “freedom for”. The first leads to destruction and anarchy, the second involves creative creative activity. Ultimately, Montessori is more about freedom for – to choose one’s own unique path of development and self-improvement of the individual.
What other freedoms does the Montessori system provide besides the freedom to choose activities?
freedom of movement. This is an open space, both in the house and on the street, in which you can move around completely freely;
freedom for cognitive activity. The environment should contain such objects that the child could freely take with his hands and manipulate them without the help of adults;
freedom of repetition. Their number depends on the needs of the child. Repeating as often as he needs, the child gets acquainted with the subject, studies, masters it, developing concentration, concentration of attention;
freedom to express feelings and build social contacts. The child is free to decide for himself with whom and at what moment he should build communication, whether it be a teacher or another child (children) in the group. He is given the opportunity to solve his own problems, which leads to independence, independence of thinking.
How does freedom go hand in hand with discipline? What framework is necessary for the organization of labor in a children’s group, and what should these frameworks be in order not to restrict the freedom of the child, but, on the contrary, to create a favorable environment for its implementation?
Once the famous Russian historian V. N. Tatishchev said: “My freedom to wave my arms ends where the nose of another person begins.” This, perhaps, is the main disciplinary task of Montessori pedagogy – to teach a child to respect another person, to his work, without losing his own freedoms. Therefore, everything is possible that does not interfere with others and does not harm one’s own safety. Discipline is understood here not as pressure, coercion on the part of an adult, but as a kind of internal ability, the ability to find a balance between what is good for oneself and what is good for others. “Discipline and freedom are two sides of the same coin, and this must be learned,” M. Montessori wrote. Reasonable rules and restrictions must be introduced into the life of the child clearly and consistently. They must be appropriate and flexible so that the child can accept and follow them with ease, both parents need to agree on these rules and offer the child to strictly comply. Such rules help the child to feel confident in relationships with others and in the environment.
Young children grow and develop very quickly, so parents must balance their rules and requirements with the changing needs of the child. Introducing certain rules, leave room for freedom of action. The Montessori method allows you to reasonably correlate the concept of freedom and discipline, which forms a clear structure specifically designed for the child.
Summarizing the above, it is worth noting once again that freedom, which is understood by many as chaos and permissiveness, in Montessori pedagogy is understood as a naturally developed inner ability to choose the best for oneself and for others. This is independence from outside support and help. According to Maria Montessori, “only freedom and one’s own experience of mastering the surrounding world allow a person to develop.” Our task is to give the child mental and sensory tools for independent knowledge of the world. Then, in most cases, the baby can do without adult care and control.

Thank you for your contribution to our children. Thank you for revealing every child. You are not just a school “Ladder”, you are fairies and sorceresses. You are Zhanna, Galya, Natalya, Sitora. It still remains a mystery to me how you remember the names of all the kids without a badge. How do you keep the room and toys clean that our children stay healthy. And we went to you from October to August. Thank you for simple yet important rituals: washing hands, blowing out candles. With you, my child learned to count and recognize numbers, learned the first letters with you, learned to get acquainted, share, turn to any person with a request. And what a wonderful New Year was, parents must buy a video, my husband and I laughed so hard when we watched the manifestation of our son at the holiday. Thanks to Jeanne for the opportunity to work out time off on favorable terms for parents. Be healthy and happy, prosperity to you. Dima went to kindergarten and it so happened that in his incomplete four years he goes to a group with children from 6 to 7 years old (it turns out the Montesori system, in the group there are children of different ages).
