Fredericksburg learning center: Salem Fields Leaning Center | More Than A Daycare
Learning Center, Fredericksburg, VA
Dear Parent,
I always knew that I wanted to be a special education teacher. In college, I was taught that students with learning disabilities would always have them. “That’s how they are. That’s how they will always be. They will have to learn how to deal with it.”
We didn’t learn how to “fix” the disabilities. We just learned how to accommodate and modify. For example, if they couldn’t read, we would read it to them. And so on.
When I taught at the elementary school level, I believed that when my students went to middle school, their teachers would continue to work on fixing their weaknesses. I had no idea that where they were in their reading level when they left me in 5th grade was where they would still be when they graduated high school. It was heartbreaking.
In my last year of teaching, I taught 6th grade. I had 17 students with learning disabilities that were reading between a kindergarten and a 4th-grade level. I had 45 minutes per day to teach them to read. The focus was on getting them prepared to pass the state test. They were allowed to have their tests read to them. No one really cared if they could read, just that they could pass the test. My students were bright and could pass the test as long as it was read to them.
The weight of knowing I wasn’t going to be with them when they went to take their driver’s test or fill out a job application was overwhelming. Who cared if they could pass the test if they didn’t have the critical skill of reading? I came home crying almost every night. There had to be something more that I could do.
I began searching for ways to help my students and found a website that talked about how they were different than a typical tutoring center or school. Their work was based on how the brain processes information. With the right training, the brain can be strengthened to get rid of whatever is actually causing a learning disability in the first place.
This was so different than what I had ever heard before, but it made so much sense to me. For the first time, I felt a sense of hope that I would be able to help all of my students.
I attended the training and was so excited to use these strategies with my students. I spoke to the administration and the special education supervisor and was told that it wasn’t possible to use these strategies in the school. It didn’t matter how effective they were. (After all, while it’s not the schools’ fault, the way they measure success is the number of students who pass the SOLs.)
I was so frustrated! My hands were tied. I had the knowledge, but I wasn’t able to use it. I couldn’t take it anymore so I opened our learning center in March 2003. There was such a need for our specialized work that we grew quickly. I stopped teaching full time so I could focus on running the Learning Enhancement Centers.
We have helped thousands of students since that time. People call every day with stories of their children’s struggles. It’s the most exciting feeling to know that we can offer hope to families like yours.

Campus: open student space | Portal “Europulse”
The modern approach to university education is not only the wide use of Internet technologies and other advantages of the digital era in the educational process, but also a convenient, up-to-date and high-tech infrastructure of the university itself. The new campuses of European universities completely break the stereotypes about the familiar environment of a student “hostel”, a dusty library or a noisy, uncomfortable audience where you have to “nibble on the granite of science”. Modern university buildings are immediately tuned in the right way: you want to feel like a student and envy those who still have this experience ahead.
Student field
For the first time the word “campus” (English campus) in relation to the university was used in the XVIII century to refer to the territory of Princeton University (USA). Its meaning goes back to the Latin roots of the concept of “field”, “open space”. The word has taken root, and today campuses are called university campuses, university building complexes – auditoriums and research institutes, dormitories and libraries, gyms and cafeterias. As a rule, universities strive to have all the necessary infrastructure as compact and close as possible so that students do not have to spend extra time moving around the city. After all, it is better to spend it on reading a book or an interesting experiment.
Modern educational buildings, as a rule, are designed according to the principle of the so-called open educational spaces (co-learning space), because one of the most important areas of higher education in European universities is self-learning. Of course, you can pile on textbooks and “dig in” knowledge at your own desk in a dorm room, however, as practice shows, self-education is much more effective, productive and fun if a well-thought-out, fully equipped, comfortable space is provided for this.
Six buildings of the University of Vienna
One of the most striking examples of such ultra-modern, purpose-built campuses in Europe built in recent years is the campus of the Vienna University of Economics and Business. The university received a new residence permit on the outskirts of the Austrian capital in October 2013. In old buildings, it has long been crowded, uncomfortable (cold in winter, hot in summer), Internet networks were malfunctioning. According to University Rector Christoph Badelt, the new campus cost the university almost 500 million euros, but today it is perhaps the largest and most modern campus in the European Union. The team of architects selected the highest qualification: Zaha Hadid (Zaha Hadid Architects), Hitoshi Abe (Atelier Hitoshi Abe), experts from well-known and successful bureaus NO. MAD Arquitectos, CRAB studio and other firms. As a result, they built six buildings with a total area of more than 10,000 sq.m. on an area of almost 9ha. Zaha Hadid, in particular, designed the central building of the university, which housed the library and learning center. The building is located at an angle of 25-33 degrees, it is unusually beautiful: a spacious atrium has become the highlight of the building. Of course, it is “stuffed” with eco-technologies: light and motion sensors help save electricity, 60% of which is generated right there thanks to the use of groundwater.
The classrooms are also full of high-tech: smartboards allow teachers to write with a stylus on a laptop screen, and the notes are displayed on a large board; instant feedback system allows students with the help of special devices with buttons to instantly give answers to the questions asked by the lecturer (the teacher sees how the students have learned the material and can correct the course).
Turin campus under the “hood”
The new campus of the University of Turin, built a year and a half ago, was erected on the south bank of the Dora Riparia River, on the site of an abandoned industrial zone. However, now there is no trace of the industrial past – so modern, original, cozy and completely green space has turned out. The move of the University of Turin to new buildings lasted for decades, and the final “accord” of the megaproject was the construction of the Luigi Einaudi complex, designed by the bureau of the world-famous British architect Norman Foster, laureate of the Imperial and Pritzker Prizes. The new complex, designed for 5,000 students, is named after the economist, politician and one of the presidents of Italy, Luigi Einaudi, a graduate and teacher of the University of Turin.
All buildings of the campus are placed by the architect under a kind of “hood” (the membrane texture of the roof resembles fabric), under which one can see a single geometric structure with a round pedestrian area inside. A 4-storey library is located along the northern border of the site on the river embankment, next to it are educational buildings. Lectures, auditoriums, public spaces, cafes, places for recreation and creativity – all these necessary elements are taken into account and designed as logically and flexibly as possible: for example, the largest auditorium, designed for 500 listeners, is easily divided into two separate halls with 250 seats. There is a cozy garden on the roof of the Faculty of Political Science. Students call it “a place of philosophical reflection.” There is also a “philosopher’s path” on campus – a walking trail with a network of footpaths that connect campus elements with urban infrastructure, public transport stops, etc.
Challenge: “the best campus”
The new campus of the Copenhagen Business School has yet to be built – last year the tender for the development of an architectural concept for a complex of educational and residential buildings, which was won by C. F. Møller, was only summed up. The terms of reference were simple, but ambitious, as the Danes love: to build the best campus in the world. After all, the main business university in Denmark, which has over 20 thousand students, deserves it, right? Construction dates have not yet been determined: the university and the city are looking for funding.
C. F. Møller has taken a win-win path in its project: the campus will be located in one of the most modern, environmentally friendly and developed cities, which means that it needs to be correctly “fitted” into the urban landscape, in other words, “intertwine” the lives of students and ordinary citizens, transforming the infrastructure of both university and adjacent territories of the Frederiksberg district, the scientific center of the Danish capital.
