About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:
The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio
Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.

My daughter is studying in the third grade of a regular Moscow school No. 2025

Author’s profile
Choosing a school
program 3 classes. I am very proud and admire her. How did it happen?
To begin with, my husband and I moved to the Western District of Moscow, to a completely new microdistrict in 2012. We haven’t had children yet (now there are three of them), but when choosing a new building, we very carefully studied the availability of schools and kindergartens nearby. By chance, we saw houses under construction and decided to go to the sales office. We were immediately impressed by the presence of our own school and garden right in the courtyard of the residential complex. Although the cost of the apartment was higher than we planned, we decided on a 2-room apartment.
When our first daughter was born in 2014. we immediately enrolled in our kindergarten in the yard and got into it when our daughter was 3 years old. At the same time, we have another child and I remain on maternity leave for another 3 years. While the younger one is sleeping, we are actively engaged in developmental activities with the older one, go to dances, gymnastics, English, and read. We understand that the daughter, as they say, is “smart beyond her years.”
A year and a half before school, we are looking for information about schools in our district and nearby, we go to open days. As a result, we make a list of 4 schools:
1. School 1329. Included in the top 10 schools in Moscow in 2021, many additional classes, swimming pool, good reviews, the main building is new and very modern. But the school is 15 minutes away by car (it would be necessary to somehow solve the issue of logistics) and the classes are overcrowded (35-40 people each!).
2. School 1317. In classes of 25 people, good reviews, I liked it very much at the open day, the equipment was at the highest level, a very cozy impression was created. But also – a 15-minute drive from home.
3. School 1589. There are no more than 20-25 people in classes, there are classes with subjects in English from grade 1, good reviews, a “strong” school. Of the minuses – transport accessibility (only by car 7 min.)
4. School 2025. Located in our yard (2 min walk), new and well equipped, automatically get by registration. True, this is a simple school, without in-depth study of anything, there are few circles.
You cannot get into all schools, except for the courtyard one, without a residence permit, or on additional lists if there are free places (risk). By the time of the determination, we have a third baby and we understand that a school in the yard is the only thing that suits us in such conditions. In addition, we find out that an accelerated training class is being recruited in our school (an effective elementary school or ENS) and it is being taken by a teacher who was recommended to us. You can get into it by passing the selection (testing). Without particularly preparing for it, my daughter passes with the highest score! We make a decision and send her to class 1-3 (3 years of primary school instead of 4). In the first year of study, such classes go through the 1st and 2nd grade program. Then 3rd and 4th grades as usual.
I will tell about teachers separately. I agree that the high rating of the school, the success of graduates and other indicators of the school do not guarantee that the child will be happy in such a school. Therefore, if there is a choice of a school, then you can focus on such indicators. Inside the school itself, you already need to look for a teacher for your particular child. To do this, be sure to attend open days, meetings for parents of future first-graders, master classes, tried to talk personally with the teacher, talk with the parents of the graduates of this teacher.
How we chose a teacher. Initially, 2 classes were recruited in our building (mathematical and humanitarian), then they announced that they would recruit the third class according to the 1-3 program. At the meeting of future first-graders, 3 teachers were introduced to us, they made a presentation about each. There was no opportunity to talk in person, since covid was in full swing and all meetings were held online.
I read information about each teacher, found reviews on the school website, and talked to the parents of graduates. After that, I already decided for sure that the ENS teacher is exactly right for us. Everything coincided: the ideal teacher for us and the chosen program.
Enrollment
Now all over Moscow there is a single system with electronic filing of applications and enrollment in schools and kindergartens. This makes it easier to get into school. We automatically got to the school by registration. There are no tests or interviews. Only a questionnaire is filled out, where the parent indicates which class he would like to send the child to (humanitarian, mathematical, general, ENSH). Based on these preferences, children are divided into classes. For those who have chosen ENSh, testing is carried out. There are no entrance fees at the school.
Program
Having studied for a year and a half on the ESS program, I can say that it really is not suitable for all children. No wonder there are minimum requirements for a child upon admission. It was perfect for my oldest daughter. This year, the middle daughter will go to grade 1, and for her, I don’t even consider the ES option, only the full 4 years of elementary school with a reinforced program in mathematics or a foreign language.
What, in my opinion, is important when choosing this program:
1. The child really needs to be prepared in terms of knowledge. For this, many were helped by preparatory students, where the children completed the 1st grade program.
2. The child must be diligent (almost immediately you have to sit through a full 40 minutes of a lesson, withstand 5-6 lessons a day). In the usual first grades, the lessons are shorter and the number of lessons increases gradually.
3. The child must be quite independent, attentive, grasp quickly, do everything at a pace.
4. Parents should be nearby, ready to help. The first year is the most difficult, as the baby abruptly turns from a preschooler into a second grader. This pace requires patience and a lot of attention from parents.
5. Good health is also very important! Having missed a week or two in this class, it is very difficult to catch up with the guys. Well, serious classes (school sports) will also have to be postponed, although some manage to combine them.
Advantages of the school
The main advantage of our school is that it is right under the windows. I try to see off and meet the child after school, but if it suddenly doesn’t work out, then the daughter perfectly reaches the house herself in a couple of minutes. Almost all the guys are yard friends, neighbors, former kindergarten classmates.
The school has an art school and a music school. This is a huge plus! The guys after the lessons, having a snack, immediately go to a music or art school without leaving the territory. It is incredibly convenient for children and parents in particular.
I realized that ratings and olympiads are not important for elementary school. The main thing is that the child loves his teacher and runs to class with pleasure!
Disadvantages of the school
Of course, there are disadvantages in the school. For now, I’m only talking about the initial link.
Food. School food is a sore subject for us. The daughter complains that many dishes are not tasty. Although sometimes she will eat something and with pleasure. The school is trying to solve the problem by changing suppliers, but so far none of them has pleased the children.
Mugs. I think that additional education in our school is not developed as we would like. The choice is usually no more than 4 circles.
Overcrowding. Our district is being actively built up by human settlements and the school has switched to 2 shifts. Now in the 3rd grade my daughter studies from 12.30 to 18.00. I had to abandon the evening sections, rebuild the daily routine and the working regime of the whole family. In classes of 30-32 people on average (not ideal, but quite comfortable). I’m afraid that in the next couple of years there will be 40 classes and possibly 3 shifts.
Tuition fees
Our school is an ordinary Moscow school. Basic school-related expenses per child:
Meals. Since we are a large family, lunches are free for us. Hot breakfasts are free for all Moscow schoolchildren. You can also bring your own food.
School mugs. My daughter studies chess at school for free 2 times a week and robotics 3 times a week. For a circle of robotics I pay about 2-3 thousand rubles a month.
Parents’ Committee. We buy gifts and treats for the holidays for children ourselves. The school does not collect any money. Almost always new textbooks are issued every year, manuals too, all supplies for creativity (glue, scissors, paper, paints …) are purchased by the school. The teacher prints out all additional materials in the classroom.
Tours, theaters. The school provides a school bus for free, we pay for the excursions themselves. We were with a class in the circus (1800 rubles per ticket), theater (1650 rubles), Father Frost’s estate (1900 rubles with a gift), in 2 museums for free.
School affairs spend 5000 R per year on the parent committee, about 6000 R for excursions and a circle for the year 6000 R. Total per YEAR is not more than 18 thousand rubles, I think it is very budgetary.
Plans for the future
Since now all three of our children attend schools and kindergartens, a second car has appeared in the family, we are considering the possibility of moving to the strong mathematical 5th grade of some gymnasium after the beginning. My daughter is an excellent student, she wins Olympiads, she is passionate about mathematics, so in the summer we will make a list of suitable schools and prepare for admission in the 4th grade.
