How to set up a family payment method for Google Family Link without an Android phone?

How to set up a “family payment method” for Google Family Link without Android phone, in practise either web/computer or iPhone?

I have a following Google Family Link setup:

  • My Google account working as an family manager
  • Google Family Link (parent application) installed to my iPhone
  • Children’s Google accounts tied to the family as family members

I’d like to set up a family payment method so that we can buy some Google Play app from Play store.

I found for some instructions at e.g. Use a family payment method on Google Play / Add a family payment method but so far everything seems to assume that I would have Google Play app on Android.

I couldn’t find anything related to family at Google Play (web) / Payments and subscriptions.

When trying to add a payment method on my kid’s Play store, I get an error (“This isn’t available for this kind of account”).

I tried also buying a Play store gift card and using it at kid’s Play store but that wasn’t allowed, I got some message about using a family payment method instead.

UPDATE: I worked this around by getting an Android device to use temporarily and setting up the family payment method with that. If you have some other solution, please share here for others.

It seems like you have to enable the Google Play Family Library from the family settings.

Go to https://myaccount.google.com/family/details

And activate the Google Play Store Family Library
(might work with directly navigating to https://play.google.com/store/family/create)

In the process of activating the library you can select a payment method.

After that is done, a new link “Change family payment method” / “Familienzahlungsmethode ändern” appears under the Play Store Payment Methods:

Google Play adding new family pay option with Purchase Requests

The Play Store already lets parents approve or decline purchases made by kids in their family, and Google is now adding “Purchase Requests” for accounts without a family payment method.

It involves a child account making the Purchase Request “directly to the family manager,” which then receives “important information about the app or in-app purchase” on their device. These notifications are sent in real-time, “but you can also view it in an approval request queue to decide later” from within Google Play.

Requests can be made for paid apps and in-app purchases (IAPs), but not Play Books, Google TV, or subscription purchases.

If approved, “you can use your own stored payment methods, including Google Play gift cards” to fund the purchase. Google says “transactions completed via Purchase Requests will all be available in your Order History.” Both parties will get a purchase confirmation email.

Purchase approval settings, including purchase confirmation emails, apply to purchases made through Google Play’s billing system.

Other nuances to Google Play Purchase Requests include:

  • Purchase approvals without a family payment method will not be available for family groups who have a family payment method added.
  • Children will not have the ability to view or use the family manager’s payment method without permission from the family manager.
  • Purchase approvals without a family payment method will be available for family groups where the family manager has an Android phone.

Sharing purchases with family members

One adult member of the family group, the Family Sharing Organizer, pays for everyone else’s purchases. You can share apps, music, books and more.

What is shopping sharing?

When shopping sharing is turned on, all family group members have access to the apps, music, movies, TV shows, and books purchased by family group members. All purchases made by family members are covered by the family organizer. nine0003

Some content cannot be shared. Find out what types of content can’t be shared.

Turn on purchase sharing on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Set up Family Sharing if you haven’t already.
  2. Open the Settings app.
  3. Click Family. If you don’t see Family, tap your name and then tap Family Sharing.
  4. Click General Purchases.
  5. Click Continue and follow the instructions on the screen. nine0014
  6. To see which payment method will be used, click Shared Purchases again and view the payment method details for shared purchases.

Turn on shopping sharing on a Mac

On macOS Ventura and later:

  1. Set up Family Sharing if you haven’t already.
  2. Go to Apple menu  > System Preferences and click Family.
  3. Click General Purchases. nine0014
  4. Tap your name, then turn on Share Purchases.
  5. To find out which payment method will be used, see information about common payment methods.

For earlier versions of macOS:

  1. Set up Family Sharing if you haven’t already.
  2. On a Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences.
  3. Click Family Sharing.
  4. Click “General Purchases” in the sidebar. nine0014
  5. Click “Set up shared purchases” and follow the prompts on the screen.
  6. To see which payment method will be used, see the details of the general payment method.

Turn off Purchase Sharing

  1. View your Purchase Share settings in the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad, or System Preferences on your Mac.
  2. Disabling the Shared Purchases feature:
    • Tap Turn Off Shared Purchases on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
    • On a Mac, click Turn Off, then click Turn Off Shared Purchases.

What payment method is used to pay for purchases made by family members?

When Shared Purchases is enabled, all purchases are paid for using the family organizer’s payment method.* If there are issues with the payment method, the family organizer can update the payment method or add a new one. nine0003

If you’re a family organizer and don’t want to share your payment method with family members, turn off Shared Purchases. After you turn it off, you can continue to share subscriptions such as Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade. If Shared Purchases is disabled, everyone will need to use their own payment method.

The user who created the group becomes its administrator.

Creating a family group

You can create a family group when:

An error occurred while creating the family group

Age Limit

You must be of legal age to manage a family group.

If you have not reached this age, you can become a member of the group by invitation of its administrator.

You are already a member of a family group

You cannot be a member of more than one family group at the same time. Before creating a new group, you must delete the one you are a member of.

Account not supported

You cannot create a family group using a Google Account from your organization or school. nine0003

Failed to create a family group

You can move from one group to another no more than once every 12 months. It must take 12 months before you can join another group or create a new one.

Country or family group not supported

Make sure the family group admin and members have the same country in Google Play settings.

When sending invitations, you are asked to enter a security code (CVN)

If you are using a shared payment method, you may be asked to verify your CVN when you invite new members to your family group.

Please note that a verification payment may appear on your card statement.

This is how we check if your card is valid. This is not a real payment, funds are not debited from the card.

Requests may appear on your account statement for up to 14 business days. If more than two weeks have passed and the request has not disappeared, contact your bank. nine0003

Family group member roles

Family group administrator

The user who created the family group becomes the family group administrator.

Only a family group admin can:

Any adult in a family group can subscribe to Google One and become a Google One subscription admin (not just a family group admin).

Parent

A member of a family group designated as a parent by an administrator must be an adult. nine0003

Parents can:

  • approve purchases from the Play Store;
  • change purchase approval and parental control settings;
  • Set up parental controls for children’s accounts using Family Link.

Family group member

You can join a family group by invitation of the administrator.

Google Family Services

After creating a family group, you will be able to:

  • Use the shared payment method for the whole family to buy content on the Play Store.
  • Use family services such as Google One, Family Library on Google Play, or Google Play Music and YouTube TV family subscriptions. For a complete list of all available services, visit families.google.com.

    Here’s what happens if you delete a child’s account:
