Account manager and other managers: what is the difference

The position of account manager is often confused with sales, PM and other specialists who work closely with the client. Unlike a sales manager, an account is put into operation after the deal is closed and, as a rule, is not engaged in searching for customers and cold calling. There are companies where these specialists combine several roles at once, but in this case, attention is scattered, which leads to problems in their core activities.

Account is distinguished by the fact that they are involved in communication with the client at all stages of the project, but they do not manage the project itself – this is handled by the project manager.

The account manager is responsible for the final result of the advertising campaign. The main task of an account manager is to help the client and build relationships between him and the digital agency specialists.

In addition, account manager:

  • presents the company’s services and advises on them;
  • organizes the work process: from concluding a deal with a client to monitoring the implementation of the project by other specialists;
  • provides the client with the necessary information;
  • plans a scope of work with the client and coordinates with the team;
  • analyzes the results of work;
  • prepares reports for the company.

The account provides communication between the client and technical specialists. At the same time, he often encounters the solution of such issues as problematic negotiations, conflict situations and misunderstandings. It is important to be able to adapt to the client’s work style and understand how to convey the necessary information in such a way as to satisfy the customer’s request.

What I did not like was the aggression and misunderstanding on the part of the client. Sometimes you talk with a client about the same thing, but he does not understand you. I had to point fingers. On the one hand it is difficult, on the other hand it is fun.

An account manager builds communication with a client based on a win-win strategy:

  • discusses possible risks with the client before starting work;
  • notifies about changes in work promptly;
  • fulfills the promise on time;
  • is looking for alternative solutions in case of disputes.

These rules should be kept in mind when working not only with new clients, but also with old ones. When a new person contacts the company for cooperation, they try to interest and convince him at any cost. And they forget about the clients with whom they have already done business. The fact that they do not need to be “warmed up” is an erroneous assumption. The account should report on the process of work and new achievements, talk about additional services.

To build relationships within the team, the account manager must clearly and concisely formulate his thoughts in writing and orally, hear the opinions of the participants and be ready for changes. You will need the ability to extract the necessary information from communication (written, telephone, personal) with the client and agency staff.

The account manager of a digital agency controls the process of creating an advertising campaign from the stage of conception to completion:

  • finds out the tasks, goals and problems of the client, which can be solved with the help of an advertising campaign;
  • draws up a brief for the customer;
  • compares future advertising concepts with the idea;
  • receives from the client the information necessary for the team to work;
  • sets tasks for digital agency employees;
  • analyzes feedback from all participants;
  • organizes and conducts internal meetings of coordination groups;
  • monitors and corrects existing tasks;
  • presents a turnkey solution.

All questions that arise in the course of work should go through the account, since it is he who knows what the client needs and what capabilities the digital agency has to implement the plan. And it is he who understands who and when exactly needs to be involved in solving the problem.

The position involves a high degree of responsibility, as the work is often associated with large budgets. Pedantry and scrupulousness, both at the initial stage when drawing up a brief, and in preparation for the launch of an advertising campaign, help not to make mistakes and complete the order in accordance with the wishes of the client.

Going from the simple (can happen to anyone) to the complex (a danger to even the most professional advertisers).

The main principle: the site checks not only your ads themselves, but also where they lead (page, site), and you as an advertiser. Blocking usually occurs due to several actions, but in case of serious violations, one is enough.
