Eric Carle-style Hearts by Art with Jenny K

Textured Heart Art Projects for Valentine’s Day

There are three parts to this Valentine’s Day art lesson.

The first part of the lesson is how to make the textured pink paper. I teach my students about Eric Carle and we make “Eric Carle-style” textured paper. I will explain exactly how to make this paper–it’s a lot of fun!

Part two of this unit includes a video of how to make this paper. In case the photographs aren’t clear enough, I have made a video to explain it further. Also, my hope is that the video will help you when you teach this lesson so your students can watch the video and you won’t have to try and teach how to do this technique. In other words, let me do the teaching for you!

The third part of this lesson is using the Eric Carle-style textured pink paper to make puzzle hearts. The great part about this lesson is there is close to a 100% success rate for students. That, to me, is a great percentage for Valentine’s Day! We want everyone to feel good about their art, especially this time of year. Students are always so creative with this project.

I have lots of Valentine’s Day-themed art-infused activities that your kids will love:

  • Valentine’s Day Coloring Sheets + Writing Prompts

Eric Karl

Eric Karl

Beloved by millions of children, the author of The Seahorse and The Very Hungry Caterpillar grew up in Germany, but at age 23 he arrived in New York, the city of his dreams, with a folder full of drawings and $40 in his pocket. He was lucky: he was immediately hired as a designer by the prestigious New York Times, where he worked for many years in the advertising department, not at all interested in children’s books.

So his successful, but unremarkable career would have flowed, but one day, quite unexpectedly, a well-known children’s writer called him and asked him to draw illustrations for his book. It turned out that he liked the huge lobster, which Eric came up with to advertise a restaurant where the writer accidentally dined. This call launched the career of Eric Karl, a storyteller and illustrator. Suffice it to say that the same, first, book – “Bear, bear, what do you see?” – has been on the shelves of bookstores for 40 years.

Following her, Eric Karl began to create his own books, which almost instantly dispersed in huge editions. The reason for this success is not only the theme he chose – animals that all children love so much – but also a special technique invented by him. The artist works in the collage technique from tissue paper, which he folds into several layers and paints, giving it the desired shades and texture. Pictures made in this way are airy and very lively. Often in his books there are also “slotted illustrations”: through the hole on the page, a part of the next page is visible, after it – the next one – and so on until the very end. It turns out a little detective: what’s next? In some fairy tales there is even a “soundtrack”. All this adds a playful element to the book. It is no longer just a book, but a book to play with and a toy to read.

And yet these are not just toy books with magnificent illustrations. These are also tiny encyclopedias about the world of animals, insects and fish, from which even the smallest readers can draw a lot of interesting scientific information. Here is what the writer himself writes about this: “Most of my books are a bridge thrown from home to school. For me, the house is always warm, toys, the elder who holds your hand or shakes you in his arms. And school is such an unknown, strange and a little scary place for a child. Will it be good there? New people, teacher, comrades – will they like me?. . After all, the unknown often brings fear with it. With the help of a bridge built from my books, I try to fight this fear by offering the child something positive, entertaining. After all, there is so much creativity in children, they are naturally curious – and I want to show them that learning can be both interesting and fun.” We really hope that Eric Karl’s books will become such a bridge for your children: from home to school, from play to knowledge, from the incomprehensible and frightening to fascinating and kind.

Head to toe

Author: Erik Karl
Illustrator: Erik Karl
Translator: Shapiro Jan
Recommended age: 1 to 4 years old

We are used to the fact that books, especially books for the little ones, tell a story: animals come to life in a fairy tale, and good always triumphs over evil. And that’s great. But there are still such books, they are often called picture books, which do not seek to tell any special story, in them you will not find poems that you can recite on a walk or sing before going to bed, in these books the most important thing is illustrations: bright, colorful, unusual. These books seem to be created in order to simply introduce the child to the book. And at the same time, get involved in the game.
This is the book invented and made by the classic of American children’s literature Eric Karl.

Kids will especially like the fact that the web can be touched. And in the summer – to see how it looks in nature.

Once, it was already approaching the New Year, the farmer suddenly realized that the snow had not yet fallen. What is the New Year without snow? And no gifts? And no congratulations? And without Santa Claus? The wonderful American artist and author of many children’s books, Eric Karl, once again invented and drew a simple story that won and will win many children’s hearts. Seahorse

Author: Erik Karl
Illustrator: Erik Karl
Translator: Shapiro Jan
Recommended age: 2 to 5 years old

The Pink Giraffe publishing house has republished Eric Karl’s bestseller Seahorse. This time – in a cardboard version! Do you know how little fish are born? Mom-fish lays eggs, dad-fish fertilizes them – and that’s all, no one cares about future babies anymore. This is the case with most fish. But there are also surprising exceptions: sea horse, tilapia, curtus, catfish and some others. These fish take care of their eggs and carefully hatch them, and they do it – you won’t believe it! Not moms, but dads! About such dads, the writer Eric Carl wrote his fairy tale.
