This is a review for middle schools & high schools in Richardson, TX:

“I came here one afternoon to work with their cheerleaders before a competition. They have a sports training facility across the street from the school with a weight room and 9 full panel mats for a cheer team. Most schools only have 1-3 mats and barely have space to practice. The facility was older but kept in very good condition from what I could see. The coaches I came across while here were incredibly friendly. The athletes were just as friendly and respectful. From what I can tell, this is a school that values all of their sports/athletes and weighs heavy on kindness and respect. I was very impressed.”

School in America | Semitsvet

Learning is light, and ignorance is darkness

I lived in the USA for several years, and during this time I had to face the concept of What is School and school life in America.

America is an international country. Everyone living here is required to get a secondary education. And children of different nationalities study in the same schools. Schools are private and public. Most children study in public schools, where tuition fees are free. But in the US there are no schools where children study from the beginning to the end of the educational process if they want to complete their school education.

School-gymnasium named after. DD Pierce

All schools are divided into 3 categories: elementary, middle and senior (or higher) schools. In elementary schools, children study from grades 1 to 4, in secondary schools from grades 5 to 8, and in higher grades from grades 9 to 12. That is, training is twelve-year , and children are accepted to school from the age of 6.

I work at one of the high schools in Richardson adjacent to Dallas ; it is higher school named after. D.D. Pearce (J.J. Pearce High School) . I do not work as a teacher, but I will talk about this in one of my next articles. I am not involved in the educational process, so I tell about everything as an eyewitness-observer.

What a height! That’s the width!

Mascot-emblem of the Higher School. D.D. Pierce – Mustang

I went to school a long time ago. Our schools were cozy and small by today’s standards, with narrow staircases and corridors, tiny foyers, cramped locker rooms, and a tiny teacher’s room. Now in Russia, it seems to me, they are building in a completely different way. And this school at Richardson – Very large: School has over 2000 students . Everything here is new and state of the art. The school is a complex of interconnected buildings. The central one looks very nice, with a glass superstructure, outwardly similar to a business office. Here are the administration and the library. The whole complex of buildings in 2 floors occupies a very decent area. Inside: high ceilings, a lot of air and light, corridors as wide as the carriageway of the street (sometimes enough for two-way, two-lane traffic), gentle staircases with wide steps, and, of course, an elevator. Cafeteria with two large halls; in each hall there is one distribution and one buffet. Here, children have breakfast and lunch, have an afternoon snack during lunch.

For security reasons entrance to the school is strictly by passes . Each student has a pass card, which he uses when entering the building, as well as when paying in the cafeteria. All buildings have doors that can only be passed through by scanning a pass.
All doors to the school close automatically, after the bell rings for the first lesson, free entry is only through the doors in the central building: there is a duty officer sitting at the entrance and checking the documents of all visitors who do not have a pass. Visitors are issued one-time passes.

1.

Business days are holidays for us.

The start of the school year in the US is not a national holiday. Our Russian “September 1” is not here, and the day the school starts can vary . Basically, the academic year begins in the last week of August. I think children are given a week to get back into the process after the summer euphoria. And there our First of September is coming, and everyone is unanimously taken to study.

Information at the booth: The schedule of classes can be obtained from 8.30 to 15.30:

In addition, children can be asked to write a short test in order to find out: they managed to forget everything over the summer, or something still remains in their heads. After the test, students are given homework to complete by the next day. A very intense program. From floor to floor, from one building to another, a tornado of urgent matters and questions hanging in the air chaotically moves. As they say: “The process has begun.” The hustle and bustle continues for about a week until ALL students get new passes and everything they need. Then there is some calm.

2. “Me, you, he, she… Together we make a whole country!”

Such different children. Appearance: mostly fair-haired – white-skinned; and dark-skinned and dark-skinned with black hair, most of which are Hispanic children. But in general, there are representatives of many nationalities . The same can be said about teachers. Everyone speaks English and everyone speaks their native language. Therefore, a school during breaks, in the opinion of a Russian person, is like an international airport: everyone is babbling and running somewhere with things.
Hairstyles – from haircuts “under zero” to hard-rock-punk.

At school, little people-people grow up, gain mind-reason. And they behave and grow up in the same way and at the same time everything is different. Both as individuals and as representatives of various nationalities. I express my point of view: black children among the general mass of students are louder, more mobile, cocky, sharp, emotional, attracting attention. Of course, not all of them – one can never generalize. But the discipline in the school is not bad. In all the time I’ve been working here, I haven’t heard of a single incident. And small blunders happen to everyone – that’s what school is for.

Interesting fact! Mail Online’s “Double Trouble” article (January 2011) states: D.D. Pierce, Richardson

3. School or Fashion House.

Children in public schools do not wear uniforms unless they are required to. The issue of school uniforms is decided at the school-parent level. In order for children to wear school uniforms, both parties must want it. But parents are not eager to spend money on uniforms, and children do not want to look standard: it is more convenient and interesting for them to wear their home clothes in order to feel more confident.
Each student has a personal book, where there is a section on the clothes and appearance of the student . You can’t wear short blouses and shirts that do not cover the body, leggings can be worn only with medium-length T-shirts, it’s mandatory to come to school in shoes, etc. Students often make mistakes.
Here, for example, is an incomplete list of outfits that serve as school uniforms for high school students:

1) Jeans, whole and torn in some places – according to the latest fashion.

2) Many girls wear tights instead of a skirt. The color can be the most diverse: from black to white, throughout the palette. By the way, black ones look more acceptable.

3) Shoes. But this is a very interesting topic. Let me first quote an excerpt from the story “Girls” by Boris Bedny: “Shoes, boots, high-heeled shoes, belated sandals and premature felt boots flashed on the feet of the dancers.” If you add to this list slippers, slates of all styles and sizes, sports shoes, cowboy and rubber boots, it will be just right. All these types of shoes are used by children almost all year round. Some children can wear winter boots even in May if it was cool in the morning.
Very often you can see students in high heels and with a heavy satchel behind their backs. It’s like going hiking in high heels.

In hot weather, of course, open shoes prevail.

4) Length of skirts: from mini to maxi.

5) Both girls and especially boys are very popular with breeches and shorts of all colors and styles. Even in the winter when it’s cold (and it can be cool in Texas).

6) Girls like open blouses and dresses. Right after the school day, you can hit the road to a party – very convenient.

7) Sweeping wide t-shirts.

Children, both boys and girls, are probably already accustomed to such freedom in clothing, and this practically does not distract them from the school process. I hope.

4. My police protect me.

The presence of teachers on duty is mandatory in the corridors and halls of the cafeteria. In addition to everything, a security representative is on duty in the cafeteria every day – a policeman with all his attributes (in uniform and with weapons). This is good, because there is never insurance against the unexpected. Yes, and a lot of small people.

One of the posts on duty is located near the gym on the ground floor. So the physical education teacher, when her turn comes, usually sits on this table in the lotus position and reads something. And the director can pass by – and everything is OK. Sometimes children sit on this table. Why not? If the teacher can do it, then so can they. I’m already used to such liberties, I don’t pay attention.

5. Road to school.

School bus

Getting to school is a problem and not a problem at the same time. You can walk (if the school is close), go by public or private transport, by school bus.

1) The traffic in the morning is rather intense. For example, past the school named after D.D. Pierce there are uninterrupted streams of cars in both directions. It is necessary to carefully and correctly cross the road – strictly at the signal of a traffic light, and the children run across the street without looking at it. All over the world it’s the same.

2) There is public transportation, but the bus routes do not cover all the cities and streets of the Dallas area.

School parking lot

3) High school students who already have a license come by car and leave it in the school parking lot. Under the law, rights can be obtained at the age of 15. Around the school, several parking lots are organized for parking cars: for schoolchildren, school employees, visitors. Sometimes children drive to school from a neighboring city, and this is a long distance and a greater risk of getting into trouble on the roadway.
But mostly children are brought to school by their parents (on their way to work) or relatives.

4) Each city has its own fleet of school buses, which scurry through the city streets in the morning and at the end of the school day. Probably everyone will remember at least one American film, which featured a bright yellow “bus”. Parents pay for this service.

Parking lots at school – gymnasium named after. D.D. Pierce

6. “That means tomorrow at the same place, at the same hour.”

Academic hour in Russia is 45 minutes – this is the length of the lesson. At the school. D.D. The pier length of the lessons is determined by something else, it can be: 28, 30, 40, 45, 62, 65 minutes. I do not know the timetable, but most likely the duration of the lesson depends on the subject.

There are some moments that bribe me unconditionally

1. “We’ll have a little rest…”

One bench, two benches…

Imagine that you are walking tired after the last lesson – your legs are not moving, and the nearest bench is in the corridor on the first floor. It makes you want to sit on the floor and rest. I often had such a desire in my time, but this was strictly forbidden by the rules of good behavior. Here IT is possible. Please! He sat on the floor right in the corridor, even lay down, read, and went on. And you can walk on the lawn.
Concept “discipline and good behavior” is human.

2. Az, Buki, Vedi, Verb, Good…

In the USA children with a reduced level of development can study in the same school as normal children . There is one school for everyone. Of course, there are special schools for especially seriously ill children, and private schools, and individual lessons with each child – but this is another way to solve the problem of teaching children with mental disabilities. I can’t say anything about it. But in public schools, including the school. D.D. Pierce, there are classes for children with disabilities. It seemed to me that there are not many children in one class. Almost every child has their own mentor. These kids dine in the same room as everyone else. Children are helped to choose food, pay for lunch. Some children are unable to move on their own and are transported in wheelchairs or strollers. The whole school – both students and teachers – knows sick children by name. They greet, talk on equal terms. Daily communication with each other unites all children, they better understand each other’s problems: no one laughs at anyone, no one mocks. All are equal, all are one, all are disciples.

3. “I would like to become a pilot, let them teach me”.

From a conversation with a friend whose son graduated from high school six years ago, I realized that American schools allow you to learn what you like; What do you think might be useful in your future adult life. You can choose a few core subjects – taking into account the mandatory requirements – and work on them. Thus, narrow specialization and in-depth study of the material begins already at school. It helps with college admissions.

4. Higher, further, more precise.

Much attention is paid to sports. In high schools, children do not engage in physical education as such. They engage in a sport of their choice. In the first fall semester, there may be one sport, and in the spring, another. According to the plan, one year out of four is sports – credit.

Students-athletes of one of the previous graduates of the Higher School named after. D.D. Pierce enrolled in various US universities to play sports further and possibly become professionals in a particular sport.

5. Musical life.

Music education at the school is also at a high level. Music comes as a minor, optional subject, but opportunities to study music at school are simply unlimited . If you decide to devote your life to creativity, to become a singer or musician, then you should start it in childhood. In the morning before and after classes, children play musical instruments, play in an orchestra, in ensembles, and sing in a choir. And all this without leaving the school.

In this article I have shown my view of the outside of the American high school (high school). In the next article I will continue the school topic: I will talk a little about the nutrition of children. As my grandmother said: “The middle is full – and the tips play.” That is, on an empty stomach and do not want to do anything, especially to sit in the classroom. So, what and how children eat between lessons – we’ll talk about this next time.

I wish all students excellent grades, and parents (if possible) a trouble-free school life.
