Las Vegas Attractions (USA). Photo and description. Tourist Overview

Las Vegas is the “Sin City”, “Entertainment Capital of the World”, “City of Lights”. And also, as many say: “Everything that was in Vegas, stays in Vegas.” This is a city of eternal celebration, gambling, lights, luxury and extravagance. There are also many wedding chapels.

    Las Vegas

More than 35 million guests annually visit Las Vegas, the gambling capital in the heart of the Mojave Desert, Nevada. nine0005

So many attractions, shops and entertainment in one square meter you will not find anywhere else in the world. This city is especially recommended for those who are drawn into the routine – Las Vegas will give you a holiday and instantly cure both apathy and depression.

In 1865, the United States Army built Fort Baker on the site of today’s Las Vegas. Due to the presence of water sources on these lands, in Spanish “vegas”, which gave the name to the city, the core of the settlement quickly formed around. Soon the new fort became an important transit point for the development of new lands. However, it took a long time before the village around Fort Baker became a city. The increase in population required at 1905, the expansion of the territory and the development of new sites, which led on May 15 of the same year to the unification with Las Vegas itself. Construction in the 1930s Hoover Dam on the Colorado River provided the young city with cheap electricity. The blue waters of Lake Mead, which arose at the dam right in the middle of a waterless desert, leave a fantastic impression, like the enchanting lights of Las Vegas itself.

Caesar’s Palace is one of the few classic buildings in Las Vegas

Las Vegas began to develop rapidly after gambling was officially allowed in the state of Nevada after the repeal of Prohibition. At 1940s the leader of the local mafia, Bugsy Siegel, built the first hotel in Las Vegas, which operated a casino. Soon a second, a third appeared behind him, and an avalanche of new buildings fell on the city, which continues to this day.

Still, the casino is the main attraction of the city. This is clearly shown by a walk along the main Las Vegas boulevard, known as the Strip (strip). Here, hotels with indispensable casinos rise everywhere, shaped like a giant pyramid topped with a sphinx, the Eiffel Tower, a knight’s castle or a miniature copy of New York. And all these miracles are flooded with a sea of lights and the glow of neon advertising. nine0005

    Roulette table

The Grand Canyon is 800 km from Las Vegas and a trip there will be a pleasure. If you think the Grand Canyon is too far away, check out the nearby Red Rocks Canyon National Wildlife Refuge. Its bizarre rock formations of fantastic red color have served as the backdrop for countless Hollywood Westerns. The bizarre play of light reflected on the walls of the canyon at sunrise and sunset is beyond description. No less famous is the Fire Valley nature reserve, located 35 km north of Las Vegas. For 150 million years, time, winds and weather have turned these huge sandstone massifs into sculptures of the most bizarre shapes and sizes, endowed with fantastic names. One of the largest natural “sculptures” is the “Elephant” rock. nine0005

Whether you go to a grocery store, a restaurant for lunch with your family, a gas station, a coffee shop or a souvenir shop, you will still find yourself in a casino. And even if there is no table for playing roulette, there will be a “one-armed bandit” for sure.

    Worth seeing

Bellagio Hotel, Caesar’s Palace, Death Valley, Excalibur Hotel, Hoover Dam, Luxor Hotel, Mirage Hotel, New York-New York Hotel, Paris Las Hotel Vegas, Red Rocks Canyon and Treasure Island. nine0005

    How to get there

There are no direct flights from Russia to Las Vegas, in any case, you need to fly with a connection through New York, Los Angeles or another city, including a European one.

    Best time to go

It’s better to go in spring or autumn, it’s not so hot. But in general, this place is year-round.

The very first Arizona club was opened for the amusement of railroad workers who loved to have a bright time. The craving for the forbidden has always attracted the inhabitants of America, so soon a beautiful stone building with the first gaming halls appeared on the site of the barracks. Casinos began to be built one after another. At the entrance to the city there is a luminous sign with the inscription “Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas” – this city never sleeps. nine0005

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign

The Las Vegas Strip overlooks numerous hotels and entertainment venues on both sides, most of which look like famous world attractions. There is the Eiffel Tower, the Sphinx, the Brooklyn Bridge, medieval castles. One of the main attractions of the street is Bellagio Hotel-Casino with the famous musical fountain. The hotel also houses a conservatory and a botanical garden of the same name. nine0005

Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Garden. Plants trimmed in the form of various animals give the place a fabulous look and leave an unforgettable experience.

Caesar’s Palace. The building in the style of an ancient Roman castle opened on the Las Vegas Strip in 1966. Famous world stars performed in it. In 2003, a local “Coliseum” was built here for concerts.

Sculpture of Caesar in the palace

Dancing fountains of Bellagio. Fountains – one of the main attractions of Las Vegas, were installed in 1998. They can play up to 29 pieces of music, jets of water reach a height of 70 m, and 4500 lamps are used for illumination.

Ferris wheel. You can leave a holistic impression of the city by taking a ride on the largest Ferris wheel in the world. Its height is 170 m. The wheel makes a full rotation in 30 minutes.

Every year up to 100,000 couples come to Las Vegas to get married. There are many small chapels in the city.

For those interested in deadly weapons, there is an unusual museum not far from the city. nine0003 The National Nuclear Testing Museum was founded in 2005 and is dedicated to the Nevada Test Site , where nuclear tests were carried out. The atmosphere of the museum allows you to immerse yourself in the study of the development of the deadliest weapon in the world.

Nevada is also known for its natural attractions. In clear weather, the red colored mountains are visible from Las Vegas Strip . In 1968, Red Rock Canyon National Wildlife Refuge. The natural park of the same name is famous for its cliffs and extraordinary scenery. There are many hiking trails of varying difficulty in the park.

Red Rock Canyon Preserve. The beauty of nature and the tranquility that reigns in this place will allow you to take a break from the noisy Las Vegas.

Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. The arch dam, 221 m high, was built in 1936 in the lower reaches of the Colorado River. The architect Gordon Kaufman worked on the project, the building is made in the Art Deco style. On the upper part of the dam there are turrets with clocks showing mountain and North American time. Lake Mead, which was formed as a result of the construction, has become a recreational area where you can swim, boat and fish. nine0005

    Entertainment at every turn

Las Vegas Avenue (Las Vegas Boulevard) is better known as the Strip to all visitors to the city. This is a seven-kilometer boulevard, completely built up with hotels and casinos, whose neon lights invite, call and beckon. Fremont Street is the second main street in Las Vegas. Although it is located in the historical center of the city, this did not prevent it from becoming the main party street of the city.

The hotel-casino “Venice” has an entire interior made in Venetian motifs, life-size gondolas glide along the channels arranged right on the floor

Fremont is a long pedestrian area covered by a huge arched domed movie screen. On the sides of the street are the main casinos and hotels of the city, as well as a huge number of restaurants, bars and bar counters, cafes and shops. Music booms from every corner, and the sky, which is replaced by a huge display here, draws unique abstract images.

    The Music of Water

The musical fountains of the Bellagio Hotel are considered to be the most beautiful attraction of Las Vegas. At the end of the 10-minute performance, their jets soar to the height of the eighth floor. They look especially impressive against the backdrop of a copy of the Eiffel Tower shining with lights near the Paris Hotel on the other side of the street. Here you can also see the Statue of Liberty, the skyscrapers of Manhattan, the Sphinx next to the Egyptian pyramid – the Luxor Hotel, which contains an exact copy of Tutankhamun’s tomb. nine0005

Las Vegas is still the only place in the US where you can get married instantly. Every year, 100 thousand weddings take place here. But the main occupation of tourists is still a game – for every taste, with any stakes, from one cent to hundreds of thousands of dollars. By the way, in this world of grandiose fakes, there is an opportunity to admire the originals: in the same “Bellagio” paintings by El Greco and Goya, Degas and Monet, Van Gogh and Picasso are exhibited. nine0005

    Fremont Street

Although almost all major hotels have their own malls, Fremont Street is the main destination for shoppers. Guests can walk along the pedestrian area under a huge canopy that protects the shop windows from the scorching rays. And at night, more than 2 million light bulbs are lit here, creating a fantastic spectacle.

Inside the hotel-casino “Paris” is the entrance to the exposition of the Eiffel Tower. From a height of 140 m, the panoramic platform offers a breathtaking view of Las Vegas

A hotel unusual for this area

The colossal Excalibur Hotel opened in 1990 with 4,000 rooms. Its unusualness lies in the fact that this quaint medieval “castle” is the only area in the entire city that is not associated with gambling. The fact is that several floors of the hotel were given over to entertainment for children. Court jesters perform in its premises, and a jousting tournament is held every evening in a separate hall, as if at the court of King Arthur.

    The most popular character

It turns out that the most common actor on the streets of Las Vegas is the king of rock and roll Elvis Presley. Elvises invite to the casino, marry couples in love, distribute booklets, conduct city tours, perform in clubs. Although the king of rock and roll never lived in Las Vegas, this popularity is due to the fact that he often performed here with concerts, and his song “Viva Las Vegas” became the unofficial anthem of the city. nine0005

The style of the Hard Rock Hotel matches the lifestyle of rock stars. It offers a 12,000 m outdoor swimming pool 2 , which hosts incendiary parties every day

One of the reasons to visit here

Numerous casinos, comfortable hotels, daily concerts and shows attract tourists from all over the world. By the way, the huge “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign located here is the main place for a selfie, so be prepared for the fact that you have to stand in a long queue in order to take a picture. nine0005

The other side of the “fertile valley” | “Unity”

Most of the road from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, as California crosses into Nevada, lies through the Mojave Desert. Hundreds of kilometers outside the window are mountains and cacti – creeping along the sandstone and looking up – as tall as a tree. As you approach the city, on the right side – the first one-story casino, a little further, at the entrance to the city itself – the huge Mandalay Bay complex, “famous” in October last year for shooting festival participants from the room of this very hotel. nine0005

    Las Vegas we don’t know
“Well, yes, this is Las Vegas,” the pious reader will say. Well, yes, if you don’t know that the first casinos appeared in the city thanks to a certain Mr. Tobin, a respectable resident of Nevada, who never played in a casino. With this money, he said, many new schools could be built. It was 1931. The fate of Las Vegas changed dramatically when gambling was allowed in Nevada on May 19th. Now this type of business is considered one of the main sources of income for Las Vegas. nine0126
The history of Vegas began with a mistake: in 1829, a merchant caravan heading to Los Angeles from Texas lost its way and almost died of thirst under the scorching sun. One of the volunteers who went in search of a well found an oasis with artesian water. This area and the city, built in the desert in just 20 years, were given a name, translated from Spanish, meaning “fertile valleys.”
What is called the “gambling capital” of the United States is only two streets away. Historically, casinos in Las Vegas were allowed only in the city center on Fremont Street, which forced entrepreneurs to open their establishments outside its administrative boundary – on the Las Vegas Strip. On this street there are now more than a hundred thematic complexes that combine a hotel, a shopping center, a casino, concert halls, amusement parks, some of which repeat world attractions: the Egyptian pyramids, the Venetian Grand Canal, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the skyscrapers of New York . nine0126
For those who prefer cultural recreation, there are museums in the city, world stars perform in numerous concert halls, and exhibition centers bring expositions of the largest artists. Many world-famous companies choose Las Vegas for their presentations.
Many Russian speakers live in Las Vegas. At first, it was acrobats and other circus performers who came here to work. Someone extended the contract, others stayed here for permanent residence. Families came to visit. Now there is an influx of migrants from other states of the country, which is facilitated by a favorable economic situation in the city: many parks, residential buildings are being built here, infrastructure is expanding. nine0126
Something bright and unusual happens in Las Vegas every day, but there are events that are difficult to even foresee. So we went to Las Vegas not for entertainment, but for spiritual strengthening – to pray, and then deliver the myrrh-streaming image of the Mother of God “Softener of Evil Hearts” from the capital of the “gambling business” to San Diego, California. Before the start of Lent, the miraculous Muscovite icon, together with its keeper Sergei Fomin, had already visited California, Arizona, Nevada — Russian, American, Greek, Romanian, Antioch churches and monasteries. Through prayers before the myrrh-streaming image, only in recent years, in six families that had not had children for a long time, three boys and three girls were born – moreover, the girls were born in Russia, the boys – in foreign countries visited by the holy image. nine0005

    Temple
From the temple came exclamations in Church Slavonic. And singing is in English. This is the Church of All Saints under the jurisdiction of the Russian Church Abroad. From the outside it looks like a ranch. And the interior of the temple is finished “under the Russian birch.” And it is somewhat reminiscent of Alaska, from where its current rector, Bishop Nikolai (Soraich), returned. By nationality, the Bishop is a Serb. By a secular profession, he was a psychologist, who, already in the priesthood, continued to work as a child psychologist and worked with children who had committed crimes or found themselves in difficult life circumstances. nine0126
“We celebrated the first Liturgy in this church on February 1 last year,” says Bishop Nikolai. – Now about 150 people regularly come to the temple. There is always someone new behind every divine service, almost all of them are Russians; there are also Serbs, Romanians, Bulgarians, Americans, one Greek.”
For the first time about Nikolai came to Las Vegas in 1979, built a Serbian church in the name of St. Simeon. In 1988, he also built an American church here in honor of the Apostle Paul.
“Many people cannot believe that people in Las Vegas are praying,” continues Bishop Nicholas. “But the temple, when the myrrh-streaming icon of the Mother of God “Softener of Evil Hearts” arrived, was full to overflowing.” nine0126
However, they could not believe that a church was needed here, even in the office of the Orthodox Church in America, when Vladyka, then still a priest, was going to build his second church in Las Vegas. “They made fun of me, they said: “You only have slot machines there.”
And then he wrote a letter to the diocesan office, explaining the need for Orthodox life in Las Vegas: “I wrote that casinos in Las Vegas are no different from steel mills in Pittsburgh or copper mines in Montana. Ordinary people do not visit these enterprises. Likewise here. Casinos are part of the region’s economy, and not the daily life of the city’s population. It is important for us and our children to have a place where we can come and grow in faith.” nine0126
After returning from Alaska, in 2012, Bishop Nikolai was going to build a Russian Orthodox church in Las Vegas. At first, 10-12 people came to the services. Gradually, a parish was formed. In the first year, only one baptism was performed, and last year Vladyka baptized 52 people.
“First, we rented a room and gathered for prayer,” says parishioner Irina Foskaris. Irina, together with her Greek husband and daughters, has been living in Las Vegas for 14 years and has been a parishioner of the Church of All Saints for 4 years. — Vladyka Nikolay immediately said that divine services should be held regularly: on Sundays — liturgy, all-night vigil — on the eve of Saturday evening and service in the middle of the week. For several years we prayed in the building of the former Mexican cafe, then in the funeral home – the only room where we were given the opportunity to serve for free. nine0126
During this time, the parish collected donations and a year ago acquired its current premises – a complex of buildings of the former sheriff’s ranch, which was converted into the current temple building. There is a place for worship, Sunday classes and a meal. Next to it is a former barn building, which the congregation converted into a space for cultural events, but to this day is still called the “barn”.
Here they gave a Christmas performance and a concert of local talents for the current Maslenitsa. They want to organize more solid festivals soon. Like the Greeks, for example. But their cathedral in Las Vegas – in the name of St. John the Baptist – for 45 years! An example of the fact that wherever Russians (and Greeks too!) come, first of all they arrange a temple. Only if the first immigrants from traditional Orthodox countries built churches on the coasts of America, then our contemporaries are mastering the Center, South, continental West of the country. nine0005

    Community
There is no organized Russian community in Las Vegas like there is in San Francisco or Los Angeles. So far, the center of communication for the majority of the Russian-speaking population of the city is the Russian church. As for the first immigrants on the east and west coasts. History repeats itself. But today, Russians communicate a lot thanks to the Internet and hope to open a Russian center at the temple with classes in the study of the Russian language, with a children’s Sunday school (adults are already studying at the temple). nine0126
Irina Foskaris, like many Russian-speakers, works in the administrative division of the casino and does not consider it an indecent occupation: “All of us, clerical and technical employees of the complexes, work at our workplace and do not even step directly onto the territory of the casino,” explains Irina. – But all of us – lawyers, office and technical workers, circus performers – have one thing in common – the desire to pray in the Russian Orthodox Church. There are seven Orthodox churches in Las Vegas in total. In addition to ours and Greek, there is the Antioch Michael-Arkhangelsk, the already mentioned Serbian and two Romanian – in honor of St. George and St. Mary.” nine0126
On the current territory of the church complex there is a place for a real Russian cathedral – majestic, with domes. And the artistic and architectural project is ready. The author of the project is the architect Roman Verkhovsky, who is now a deceased representative of an old Kostroma noble family, the author of two, perhaps, the most famous Russian churches in the United States – the Trinity Church in Jordanville and the St. Vladimir Memorial Church in Jackson (New Jersey), built by 1000- anniversary of the Baptism of Rus’.
The cathedral according to this project was supposed to be built in Los Angeles, but was never built. Now another place has been found for it – in Las Vegas, and when asked when construction can begin, Bishop Nikolai replies that it all depends on how soon the necessary amount is collected. And she hopes that the Most Holy Theotokos, who visited the temple in Her image “Softener of Evil Hearts”, will strengthen and help. nine0126
By the way, by the time of the current arrival on the West Coast of the USA, copies of the myrrh-streaming icon with chasubles – thanks to the efforts of one benefactor – were written and are now in all three Russian churches in Los Angeles: in two – under the omophorion of ROCOR, and one – of the Orthodox Church in America .
