in what unusual conditions children study

Photos: Depositphotos / Illustrations: Julia Zamzhitskaya

Thinking about the school, we imagine orderly rows of desks and teachers at the blackboard. But in the world there are many unusual educational institutions located in the strangest places. We talk about it in our selection.

Kenelaken nomadic school, Yakutia, Russia

Source: RIA Pobeda RF

Preserving the traditional way of life of the indigenous peoples of the North is an important task for Yakutia. To solve it, the authorities are creating nomadic schools for the children of reindeer herders.

As of 2021, there are 4.3 thousand children of school age in nomadic families. Previously, they were sent to boarding schools so as not to interfere with their parents grazing cattle. Today, thanks to the Kenalacan school and a dozen of its kind, children can stay with their parents, absorb family values without interrupting their studies.

Not only reindeer herders, but also school tents move from camp to camp. Six to eight people work in each tent, in the role of teachers – the parents themselves or other members of the community who have previously completed pedagogical courses. Schoolchildren receive homework and tests from teachers in a regular school, and then send them back thanks to satellite Internet.

Officially, the nomadic school is registered as a branch of the city’s secondary school. However, Kenalacan and other similar educational projects face bureaucratic difficulties. How can a school register a land plot, meet the requirements of fire safety and Rospotrebnadzor, if it literally moves on sledges and deer? These problems are being actively discussed at the regional and federal levels.

At the beginning of the 20th century, nomadic schools were already opened in Yakutia, but they did not work for long. Now the work of such schools is supported not only by local authorities, but also by UNESCO.

Floating schools, Bangladesh

Source: Plaid Zebra

Between one fifth and two thirds of Bangladesh is under water during the rainy season. Poor families that do not have their own boats are simply not able to send their children to school, and they are left without education.

Public figure Mohammed Rezvan decided to change the situation by launching a network of floating schools through the non-profit organization Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha.

“If a student doesn’t go to school, the school comes to him,” he says.

During the rainy season, boats collect children at home, then dock, and school begins. Today, the organization has more than 20 boats, each of which can accommodate 30 people. In the boat school you can find not only classes, but also a library, and even computers with Internet access. Solar panels provide access to electricity.

The first floating school appeared in Bangladesh in 2002. Mohammed’s example was followed by other countries with similar problems – floating schools today operate in Cambodia, Nigeria, the Philippines, Vietnam and Zambia.

Terraset Underground School, Reston, NV, USA

loads from overcrowded schools in the city of Reston. The school community sought to reduce its dependence on the oil market. This is how the project of the Terraset school with a large number of solar panels on the roof appeared. The building itself was built on a hill from which the top was cut off. A building was built in its place, and then it was covered with earth. This was supposed to reduce the heat loss of the school.

The school building stands on a hill from which the top was cut off. The walls are reinforced with earth mounds, and the roof of the school is covered with a network of solar panels.

Interestingly, the US authorities refused to finance $625,000 worth of solar panels – the project was supported by the Crown Prince, and later the fifth King of Saudi Arabia, Fahd ibn Abdulaziz Al Saud.

The opening of the school was a big event. It was attended by Crown Prince Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al Saud himself and US Energy Advisor James Schlesinger. The school attracted a lot of public attention, but did not fully meet expectations. The architecture of the building saved thousands of barrels of oil in heating costs, but the solar panels designed for the desert could not withstand temperature fluctuations and simply failed. Subsequently, the school refused them.

Even though Terraset is still one of the most energy efficient schools in the world, the project remains one of a kind.

Dongzhong Mid Cave School, c. Mao, Guizhou Province, China

Source: Bored Panda

What if you have students but no school in the area and no money to build a new one? In 1984, because of these problems, the Chinese people built a school in Dongzhong Cave.

The cave turned out to be quite spacious: its dimensions are comparable to an aircraft hangar. At some point, even wooden rooms were built inside, which actually formed a cave village.

At its peak, Dongzhong Mead School had 186 students and eight teachers. The cave school was ideal for studying geology and biology, because rocks and the life of bats could be studied without leaving the “desk”. It was also a great place for choral singing. The acoustics, as noted by local residents, are simply wonderful.

But in 2011 the school was closed by the decision of the authorities. The Chinese government was actively working to relocate villagers to a neighboring area with more developed infrastructure and hoped that without a school, residents would leave the village faster. This did not happen – the village is still in place, and the children attend a boarding school two hours away from their place of residence.

Abo Bomb School, Artesia, New Mexico, USA

Source: Flickr their safety in case of a nuclear explosion. With the exception of three buildings – in which, however, there were no windows either – it was located completely underground. Heavy steel doors, reinforced concrete walls and a 53 cm thick concrete roof were supposed to protect children from a nuclear strike.

The area of the underground part of the school is 3 km². In addition to classrooms, there is a freight elevator, a shower from radioactive particles, and even a mortuary. The school also always kept a supply of food for two weeks for 2,000 people.

“Abo” functioned as a public elementary school. It also served as a tourist attraction: signs were installed throughout the city in the direction of an unusual school. The school was closed in 1995 due to high maintenance costs and severe overheating of the concrete structure. A new elementary school, Yeso, was opened nearby, while Abo remained a historic site.

Railway Schools, Odisha State, India

Source: Ruchik Foundation website

Hundreds of thousands of children from Indian slums continue to engage in criminal activities and take illegal substances due to their complete lack of education and desire for it. Inderjit Khurana, a teacher and founder of the Ruchika Social Service Organization (RSSO), was able to change this situation for the better.

In 1985, she opened the first free “Platform School” at the Bhubaneswar railway station for homeless children from poor families. Today, railway schools educate more than 4,000 children. The most talented are transferred to ordinary Indian educational organizations – a few dozen people a year receive a ticket to a brighter future.

In addition to four hours of instruction a day, meals and medical care are provided to students and their families. The main task of the school is to increase literacy among the poor and give children at least minimal knowledge. There are no usual desks in railway schools, but there are songs, games and, most importantly, caring adults.

In addition to railroad schools, the RSSO supports 63 elementary schools in the slum through private donations. The organization believes that every child has the right to education.

What should a school be like? Most of us are accustomed to the traditional model – a building with several floors, classrooms, sports and assembly halls, a dining room, sometimes a pool. What if the school is a floating island? Sounds fantastic? This is not the case in today’s world!

Children spend most of their time in the school building. It would be superfluous to say that the organization of space, the interior and equipment of the educational institution are very important. Undoubtedly, the environment influences the development of the child and in one way or another participates in the formation of his personality. So, in our list:

  • School on the water. Kompong Luong (Kombodia)
  • Busan International Foreign School (South Korea)

The island is a small and completely autonomous settlement – there is a school, several shops and residential buildings. Kompong Luong attracts many foreign tourists, allowing you to replenish the budget of the islanders. A number of orphans live in the floating village, whose parents died while fishing, and the income from the reception of excursion groups makes it possible to support the children left without a family.

Busan International Foreign School (South Korea)

Busan International Foreign School (South Korea) Busan International Foreign School is designed as a school for expatriates. Children whose parents moved to Korea permanently or work here on a long-term contract need to adapt quickly, so the program at Busan International Foreign School is very intensive. In ordinary Korean schools, it would be difficult for beginners – ignorance of local traditions often becomes a reason for bullying. The Common Language Search School allows children to integrate into Korean society and receive an international education. The school operates according to the IB International Baccalaureate system, most children study three foreign languages at once – Korean, English and Spanish. Teachers provide additional support to children – most subject teachers also have a psychological education.

Nomadic school (Russia)

In the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), a significant part of the local population is engaged in reindeer herding and leads a nomadic lifestyle. If until recently the children of nomads had to live in boarding schools in order to get an education, now the situation has changed! There are more than 10 nomadic schools and mobile tents in the region, equipped with everything necessary for studying in the field. Children of reindeer herders can lead a normal life and stay with their parents. The schedule of the nomadic school is different from the usual one, and the children receive assignments via the Internet via satellite!

Watershed School of Adventures (USA)

The American Watershed School believes that the world around us is the classroom. Most lessons are not held in classrooms, but in nature. Biology classes are held at a nearby farm, and new geography topics are best learned during a canoe trip! Pupils carry out numerous projects, much attention is paid to the development of social responsibility and volunteering. The school has a Farm to Table program, participation in which allows you to master the skills of farming and cattle breeding. The teachers at Watershed School are also unusual, they are not only teachers and mentors, but, above all, assistants with whom you can prepare for a school concert or annual performance.

Mountain Mahogany Community School (USA)

Another unusual American school. Studying here is an incredible fortune! Orestad Gymnasium in Copenhagen is a unique school of its kind, there are no classes, no division into classrooms. The school is built on the principle of open space, open space. The project and implementation belong to the well-known architectural bureau 3XN ROLE. In 2007, the building of the gymnasium was recognized as the best building in Denmark, because the school is incredibly beautiful! A steep spiral staircase in the center, cozy round islands where children and teachers gather, comfortable recreation areas made in bright colors – you don’t want to go home after school! Terraset Underground School, Reston, Virginia, USA

Do you think underground schools exist only in fairy tale worlds? Wrong! Magic happens in modern life too! Vivid proof is the Terracet School in Virginia. During the energy crisis, when the issue of heating schools was acute, a unique project was implemented in the town of Reston – an underground school. In order to start construction, it was necessary to level the hill, on the site of which the building was erected. Subsequently, it was covered with earth, thanks to which it was possible to keep warm for a long time. The school is heated by solar panels. Terraset is rightfully considered the most energy-efficient school in the United States and is of interest as a tourist attraction.

Nanyang Primary School. Nanchang, Singapore

Singapore’s Nanyang Primary School students in Nanchang never get bored! The joyful multi-colored design is pleasing to the eye and does not allow you to feel sad – the school is like a giant lollipop! Schoolchildren move along the curved passages of the building, in the center of which there is a central staircase that provides access to the classrooms. Properly designed use of the landscape determined the location of sports fields – they were built on the site of a ravine, thanks to canopies they provide protection from cold and rain. It is interesting that, according to the idea of the author of the project, in the classrooms, instead of bright colors, calm shades prevail in the interior, which allows children to better concentrate on their studies and improves discipline.

Carpe Diem School (Aiken, South Carolina, USA)

American Carpe Diem School in South Carolina is one of the amazing schools in the world. Here they believe that each child needs to find an individual approach, so each has a separate office in the open space hall. In fact, the school is more like a huge office with 300 single study places, each of which is equipped with a personal computer. Such a non-standard approach to education is bearing fruit – Carpe Diem School has been demonstrating the best academic performance in the region for several years in a row. In addition, school students read three times more than their peers on average in the country.

School Under the Bridge, Delhi

In India, most of the population can only dream of high schools and gymnasiums. Children’s education is often limited to begging skills. Volunteers tried to improve the sad situation in education by organizing a free school under the bridge. Children from poor families who are striving for enlightenment study here. You can get only the most basic knowledge, you won’t be able to go to the middle classes. There are no famous graduates in the “school under the bridge” yet, but who knows, maybe someday they will appear and, of course, will contribute to the school reform in India, making education accessible to everyone.

Resume

Absolutely amazing list of schools, in my opinion! What strange forms modern education does not take! But the main thing is the desire to learn! Here’s my advice to you: think big (think big) and strive for knowledge, no matter where you are and what opportunities you have!

Always yours,
Mr. Great

The Most Unusual Schools in the World – Tutors Association Blog

Yes, you remember how it was in our schools: a standard set of subjects, breaks, a canteen. Even the form until a certain time was the same for everyone. What’s there – school supplies and those like a carbon copy. I remember that in the fifth grade they brought me felt-tip pens from abroad, Polish, I think. O sweet burden of glory! It fell upon my fragile childish psyche, and for a week I was the epicenter of the colorful events of the whole class. Then a classmate was given a cooler thing – a calculator – and, of course, the role of a superhero passed to him. Then for the first time I realized how short-lived the love of fans is, but, sorry, I got carried away, the report is not about that.

My last call is long gone. And I can’t say that I was somehow very nostalgic for naval combat tasks in a notebook until I found out about the existence of other schools. Completely different. So different that while I was reading and looking at the photographs, a mean man’s tear welled up in my eyes. Well, why, why didn’t I study in these crazy schools?! Time machine, please invent immediately! I want to go back to my childhood and not eleven, but twenty years to go to one of the schools, the story of which you can read below. Each of them is unique either in form or in content.

Terraset Underground School. City of Reston, Virginia, USA.

Five points to such a “mineral”!

Dungeon. Raw dark word. Exhausted children with a calcareous complexion from a chronic lack of sun appear. Nothing like this. Quite rosy-cheeked, healthy and cheerful students. Not only they are proud of their school, but all the inhabitants of Reston. Periodically they even arrange excursions for compatriots and foreigners.

The educational institution appeared in the mid-1970s, and was driven underground by the energy crisis that was then raging in North America. The regime of the most severe energy savings was introduced in the country: the lighting was modest, the heat was weak. The town of Reston, however, needed a new school. Do not wait for the crisis to end, the local authorities thought. Brilliant designers were invited and they came up with a miracle school. They leveled the hill, erected a building, and then covered it with earth. Again, this is brilliant! Natural earth cover warms up the walls. And in order, on the contrary, to cool the room, solar collectors were installed above the hill.

Today, Terracet is the most energy efficient and “biological” school in the US and the main attraction of Reston. Probably, the best wish for a schoolboy sounds there – “so that you fall into the ground!”.

Transport school ” De Kleine kapitein ” from industrial containers. City of Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Caring giant parents could give their baby such a set of multi-colored cubes. Photo source

The school was built in 2009 as a temporary and forced by circumstances. A new microdistrict was built up, and a room for students was urgently needed. So they built a barrack-type institution. Like, it’s better that way than nothing. And when time and money were found for the construction of a fundamental building, the residents unanimously spoke in favor of leaving the school. And what is fun, pleasing to the eye. Yes, and economically profitable: suddenly they decide to build another house, so the containers can be easily and quickly transported. And you don’t need to spend money on a global repair, I refreshed the colors and order.

If I, an adult, are delighted by these colorful cubes, what can I say about children. Amsterdam schoolchildren, I confess, I envy you in many colors. I would go to such a container school not only for lessons, but also for all electives, circles, and even, instead of parents, to meetings.

Kenelaken nomadic school. Oleneksky Evenki national region, Yakutia, Russia.

It happens – parallel worlds intersect: the ancient custom of nomadism and modern satellite Internet. Photo source

Also a mobile school. Only, unlike Amsterdam, soft and fluffy – felt. Children of nomadic reindeer herders study there. Previously, they had to settle somewhere in one city, and live for many months in a boarding school, away from their families. There is little joy, of course, to be in the state walls all the time. And not every parent will let go of a minor child, no one knows where, no one knows how much. So the child wandered from place to place, not at all burdening himself with school knowledge.

The problem was solved when the global network appeared. Now, in addition to residential yurts, they also set up student yurts at the nomad camp. It must have satellite internet access. According to it, children receive assignments in all disciplines and are sent for testing to a “sustainable” district or regional school.

In Yakutia, a special (fully remote) educational program has been developed for nomadic students, and there are more than a dozen mobile schools themselves.

That’s what I understand – a constructive solution to the issue. It seems that Cola Beldy knew forty years ago that they would invent something universal, all-pervading. Remember, in the song – “you will know that in vain they call the North extreme …”.

Online College of Magic. State of California, USA.

Am I the only one who thinks he looks like Professor Dumbledore from the Harry Potter saga? Photo source

The wizard in the photo in the worldly life is named Oberon Zell-Ravenheart. He is 71, about the same time he has been studying the occult sciences. Oberon is the founder, director and teacher of the Gray School of Wizardry.

Incredibly, the School of Wizardry has been officially recognized as an academic institution. She is the first and so far the only one in the world. Standing applause for the State of California. I may not be a big fan of Harry Potter, but always up for a healthy dose of insanity.

Zella-Ravenheart has many similarities to the fabulous Hogwarts. Students are distributed, according to their character, into four faculties: Wind, Mermaids, Salamanders and Gnomes. The school course is designed for seven years of study. Compulsory disciplines – sixteen. Among them: alchemy, talking with animals, spells and working with a magic wand. There is also a special course for advanced magicians – “protection from dark forces.” Today, 735 students study at the school. Getting there is as easy as shelling pears: 1) you need to know for sure that you are a sorcerer, 2) pay an entrance fee of 25 US dollars.

So far, all teaching is done remotely, over the network, but Professor Dam…, that is, the director of Zell-Ravenheart, plans to buy an empty castle in Montana and open a real School of Wizardry.

May the force of the Jedi be with him!

Cave school. Guizhou Province, People’s Republic of China.

Cavemen, it turns out, are our contemporaries. Photo source

Looking ahead, I will say that now this school is closed, but from 1984 to 2011 it functioned in the image and likeness of ordinary secondary schools. Such an unusual educational institution did not appear from a good life. Guizhou Province is one of the poorest in China. It is not very appropriate to talk about some high spiritual needs, when people there are often malnourished and cannot afford an extra pair of shoes. But even in conditions of total poverty, residents managed to organize school leisure for children. It was impossible to build a normal building for the minimum amount allocated by the state. So I had to be content with the mercy of nature. Simple barracks were built in the cave for teacher and school needs, desks were set up and, in fact, the class was ready.

Eight teachers worked in the cave school, they taught several hundred children in 27 years. But in 2011, party bosses considered that the primitive appearance of the school was causing irreparable damage to the image of the country. The educational institution was closed. Now it is visited only by tourists. And a school that would correspond to a high moral character was never built. In general, no one was built, even a low-moral one.

Kompong Luong floating school. Tonle Sap Lake, Kompong Luong Village, Cambodia.

Floating school-home. Photo source

Kompong Luong is not only the name of the school, but of the whole small village. The uniqueness of this settlement is that houses, shops, cafes and a school are located on the surface of the lake.

There are only two teachers at the school, they are also educators for some orphans. Teachers and children left without parents live permanently in this floating school. After classes, the desks are moved to the wall, and the vacated space becomes a living room, kitchen and bedroom at the same time.

The institution exists only on donations from local residents and compassionate tourists. According to the descriptions of travelers, sometimes, at the height of the tourist season, so many school supplies, clothes and sweets accumulate that students arrange a fair where they sell surplus donated items. The money raised is used to support the home-school hearth.

One would like to believe that one day Kompong Luong and schools like it will be closed forever. Not because of the lawlessness of the nomenklatura, but because of the need that has really disappeared. For a very good reason for the transformation of Cambodia into an economically, socially and culturally developed country.

Waldorf School. Founded in 1919. City of Stuttgart, Germany.

Smoking is dangerous to health, but sometimes good for learning. Photo source

This is no longer just a separate school, but a world-famous educational doctrine. The main principle is to provide the child with maximum opportunities for development at a pace that is comfortable for him personally. There is no strict system and grades, there are almost no textbooks. There are few standard disciplines that we know from general education schools. Practically useful differences are taught. For example, pupils can knit, bake bread, draw, design architectural structures, and dance. And there is no division into boys and girls classes. Everyone knows everything. They also travel the world a lot.

The history of the birth of Waldorf pedagogy is curious. The doctrine was founded by Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian philosopher, esotericist, founder of the spiritual movement of anthroposophy. But Emil Molt, the owner of the Waldorf-Astoria cigarette factory, ordered the construction of a revolutionary educational institution. The very first school (pictured) was located at a factory where tobacco products were stamped. And the new technique got its name not in honor of Steiner or Molt, but in honor of the cigarette factory.

Waldorf is now a patented trademark. In 60 countries, including Russia, there are 1,025 Waldorf schools and more than 2,000 kindergartens.

Imagine if exams in subjects such as crocheting, growing rye, making pottery, table etiquette become the norm. It’s sad to admit, but I would have failed in all subjects. That’s it, I’m writing an ad “I’m looking for a tutor, a skilled Waldorf high school student. Do not offer pupils of general education schools.

Orestad Gymnasium in the style of open space . City of Copenhagen, Denmark.

A specialized gymnasium trains future media professionals. Only high school students are accepted here, and so far only Danes. In the future, they promise to expand the geography. The establishment has been operating since 2007. In the same year, the gymnasium was recognized as the best architectural building in Scandinavia.

There are no separate classrooms in the building. All students study in one huge room. Four floors are connected by a wide spiral staircase, and each floor has a seating area with soft sofas and pouffes. You can lie down, chat, and be especially disciplined and do your homework right there.
