The 10 Most Brutal Mass Murders in American History

The Stephen Paddock , 64-year-old massacre in Las Vegas on October 1, became the most massive shooting in US history . A pensioner, a player, a man with alleged mental disabilities in one person opened fire on the crowd from his hotel room, located on the 32nd floor. According to eyewitnesses, the shooting continued without interruption for fifteen minutes. During this time, the shooter managed to kill 59people and injure another 527. Currently, law enforcement officials are trying to figure out the motives that prompted Paddock to commit a crime.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time that innocent victims are targeted by psychopaths and maniacs. History has several shocking cases when, as a result of the actions of just one person, those who happened to be nearby die from life.

The Beth School, 1927

Exactly 90 years ago in the state of Michigan in the Great Lakes region in the Midwest of the United States, a massacre took place that stirred the whole world.

Farmer Andrew Kehoe, who was on the board of trustees, bombed the school, killing 45 people, 38 of them were students in grades 2-7, and the rest were adults.

It is known that at some point the inhabitants of the town began to collect an additional tax for the construction of the educational institution “Bet”. The farmer felt that the levy had led to financial problems for his family, resulting in the man foreclosing the mortgage on his farm. Apparently, Kehoe could not withstand such a blow and began to plan an attack.

First, the farmer hit his wife on the head with a heavy object, causing the woman to die. After that, the man blew up the farm and, taking advantage of the fact that the firefighters were focused on putting out the fire, made his way to the school and planted explosives.

Stockton School, 1989

Another school massacre was carried out by 24-year-old Patrick Edward Purdy. This young bum was known to be a troublemaker, but no one expected him to turn out to be a brutal murder as well. Until now, it has not been clarified how a man with a reputation as an alcoholic and drug addict got access to weapons, but the result of someone’s oversight turned into a bloody tragedy.

On January 17, 1989, at noon, Purdy drove his van to the educational institution where he once sat at the school desk. The man got out of the car and threw a Molotov cocktail at it, causing the car to explode. But Purdy did not stop there: the drug addict went to the playground and started shooting at the children.

In three minutes he fired more than 100 shots, killing 5 children and one teacher, he wounded 29 people. When he finished shooting, he killed himself.

Luby Restaurant, 1991

This massacre took place on October 16, 1991 in Killeen, Texas, USA.

George Gennard drove his pickup truck through the front window into a restaurant and shot and killed 23 people, aged between 29 and 75, and wounded 27. After being hit by police arriving at the scene, Gennard shot himself.

35-year-old Gennard was an unemployed, angry, withdrawn and woman-hating drug addict. As he drove his pickup truck into the restaurant, he yelled: “All the women of Killin and Belton are vipers! This is what you did to me and my family! This is what Bell did to me… It’s a day of reckoning! This is what Bell County did to me!”

Columbine School, 1999

Eric David Harris and Dylan Bennet Klebold are two 11th graders who are remembered around the world as the high school students who staged one of the most mass murders in American history.

In 1999, Eric Harris and his friend Dylan Klebold brought several homemade bombs into the school building and were about to open fire on people running out of the building. As a result, Harris and Klebold took rifles and went deeper into the building, shooting at those they met on the way.

Schoolchildren killed 13 people and injured 23. Three people were also injured when they tried to escape. Ultimately, 18-year-old Harris and 17-year-old Klebold committed suicide at the crime scene.

Virginia Tech, 2007 everything will end in such a massive tragedy.

On Monday, April 16, 2007, he went to the dormitory where he opened fire on the students.

Cho then returned to his room, where he removed his bloody jeans and white T-shirt and changed; he then deleted all letters from his Internet mailbox, wrote a suicide note, and recorded a video letter. He subsequently sent it to a local TV channel.

Cho then moved towards the training building. He had a backpack containing a Glock 19, a Walther P22, a hunting knife and a hammer, as well as 400 rounds of ammunition and 12 ten-round magazines.

After the massacre, 33 bodies were found in the institute building, including the body of the shooter, 25 people were injured.

Binghamton Immigration Center, 2009

South Vietnamese migrant, 41-year-old Jeeverly Antares Wong, opened fire at the immigration center.

The massacre lasted 48 minutes, he fired 99 shots at visitors and employees of the center, and at the end the immigrant committed suicide. He killed 13 people and wounded four.

Former colleagues described Wong as a very quiet person and were quite shocked to hear about this massacre on the news.

Fort Hood military base, 2009

39-year-old military psychiatrist, Major Nidal Malik Hassan of the US Armed Forces committed the most massacre of all that has ever occurred on the territory of American military bases. It is known that Hassan was dissatisfied with the US Iraqi campaign.

It is known that the tragedy happened on the day when Hasan’s colleagues came for a medical examination. They went to the main places of military operations in Iraq.

On 5 November at 13:30 he opened fire on unarmed confused men. He was later declared sane and executed by lethal injection.

As a result of the shelling, 13 people were killed and 33, including the killer, were injured.

Aurora Cinema, 2012

40 minutes after the start of the screening, a young man in a SWAT uniform, who was mistaken for part of the show, burst into the cinema hall in the city of Aurora, threw a smoke bomb and opened fire on the audience.

The audience took the attack as part of the show.

The shooter turned out to be 24-year-old James Holmes, a resident of Aurora, who went berserk at his failure to get a ticket to a movie premiere. Under his bullets, 12 people died, 58 were injured. After this incident, reports began to appear throughout the country that such a crime could be repeated.

Sandy Hook Elementary School, 2012

On the morning of December 14, 2012, 20-year-old Adam Peter Lanza shot his mother at home, then arrived at the school where he killed 20 children of six and seven years of age , six adults and wounded two, after which he committed suicide.

In total, 28 people (including himself) died at his hands. This massacre was the second-most murdered in elementary school in U.S. history, following the massacre at Beth School on May 19.27 and third in the number of those killed in an educational institution in the United States, second only to the massacre at Virginia Tech in April 2007.

deadliest incident in recent U.S. history at concerts, clubs and movies (LIST)

Reuters

ALL PHOTOS

Shooting in Las Vegas last Sunday, where 64-year-old white American Stephen Paddock killed nearly 60 people and injured hundreds more during a concert at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival, became the bloodiest crime of its kind in recent US history and one of the worst terrorist attacks that took place at concerts, nightclubs and cinemas in various countries of the world. (First LISTS dead).

The US intelligence services do not see any terrorist background in the massacre, but they cannot yet explain what the motives of the lone criminal were. The picture of what happened has acquired new details, although many questions remain unanswered. Stephen Paddock checked into the Mandalay Bay hotel room with his ID on September 28 and has not been cleaned in his room on the 32nd floor since. He carried more than 10 suitcases with 23 firearms . He also stocked up with a hammer, which he used to break a high-strength glass window in the room. Investigators found 19 more weapons in Paddock’s house, and ammonium nitrate (saltpeter) suitable for making explosive devices in his car.

1 hour and 12 minutes passed from the moment of the first wake-up call to the police until the assault of the special forces. The distance from the window from which Paddock fired to the concert venue was about 400 meters. The FBI notes that the offender equipped two firing positions in the room, had the appropriate training, as he was a member of the US National Rifle Organization (NRA), was cool and collected. But these conclusions do not in any way correspond to the testimony of Paddock’s relatives and acquaintances, who claim that he was was a gambler , had no military background and had little interest in automatic weapons. Judging by the descriptions of the special services and those who knew Paddock, it was as if a completely different person was shooting at the crowd of spectators from the hotel room.

This gave reason to believe that Stephen Paddock may have been suffering from a mental disorder. And it was this version that was already voiced, without waiting for the results of the investigation, by US President Donald Trump. He stated that the 64-year-old man was crazy. “He was a sick man, a crazy man,” Reuters quoted him as saying.

SIX BLOODEST SHOOTINGS IN THE USA

2016: nightclub in Orlando – 49 dead, 58 injured

, married to a native of Uzbekistan, opened fire in a nightclub for people of non-traditional sexual orientation Pulse. As a result, 50, visitors and employees of the establishment died, 90,167, and another 58 people were injured. The attacker was eliminated during the storming of the building by law enforcement forces. The terrorist group “Islamic State”*, banned in Russia, claimed responsibility for the attack in Orlando. As it turned out, Martin demanded to stop air strikes on Syria and Iraq, threatening otherwise to take revenge on the Americans. At that time, the Orlando massacre was the largest mass shooting in US history, as well as the bloodiest terrorist attack since the September 11, 2001 attacks.

2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School – 20 dead children aged 5-10 and six adults

December 14, 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut Lanza, who suffered from a mild form of autism, armed with a Bushmaster AR-15 rifle and two Glock and Sig Sauer pistols, opened fire. As a result killed 20 children aged 5-10 years and six adults. Before leaving for school, he shot and killed his mother, 52-year-old Nancy Lanza, by shooting her four times in the head. Then, in her own car, the killer drove to the elementary school, shot through the window and, once inside, opened fire. He shot people at close range – almost point-blank range – and finished off the wounded. By the time special forces and rescue services arrived, the offender committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.

2007: Virginia Tech – 33 dead, 29wounded

April 16, 2007 at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Blacksburg, Virginia, USA), a 23-year-old student from South Korea, Cho Seung-hee, who suffered from schizophrenia, opened fire with pistols in the dormitory and academic building, after which he committed suicide. As a result of the shooting , 33 people were killed , another 29 were injured. Between the murders, the perpetrator sent an open letter and a video manifesto to the NBC News television service, in which he compared himself to Jesus Christ. The police found that the massacre at the US university was preceded by a quarrel between the perpetrator and his girlfriend. After that, he broke into the German language class in the auditorium of the Faculty of Engineering and shot the professor in the head, and then began to shoot at the students. He did this silently. This massacre in Virginia took place on the eve of the eighth anniversary of the Columbine shooting.

1999 Columbine High School – 13 dead, 24 injured

The massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado on April 20, 1999 was one of the worst school massacres in US history. Then two young men, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, burst into the Columbine School with weapons in their hands. In 4.5 hours, young terrorists killed 12 students and one teacher and injured dozens of students, after which they committed suicide. 80 investigators were involved in the investigation of this crime, collecting 10,000 physical evidence and interrogating 1,400 witnesses. Both boys were from wealthy, stable, decent families from the middle class, but at school they were “outcasts”: they did not shine in sports, they did not differ in charm, they did not use the love of classmates. They wore long black coats. Played bloody computer games. They listened to the cacophonous compositions of rock bands chanting hate. They were obsessed with the Nazis – and their crime was timed to coincide with Hitler’s birthday.

1991: Luby’s restaurant in Killeen – 23 dead, 27 injured

On October 16, 1991, 35-year-old unemployed merchant seaman George Hennard crashed his pickup truck into the window of a Luby’s restaurant in Killeen, Texas. Getting out of the car, he shouted: “All the women of Killeen and Belton are vipers! This is what you did to me and my family! This is what Bell County did to me … The day of reckoning has come!” Then he pulled out Glock 17 and Ruger P89 pistolsand opened fire on visitors to the institution and its employees. There were 140 people in the restaurant at that time. As a result, 23 people were killed (of which 14 were women), and another 27 people were injured. During the exchange of fire with the police who arrived at the call, the attacker received four wounds and committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. It was the largest mass murder in American history until the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007.

1984: McDonald’s in San Diego – 21 dead, 19wounded

July 18, 1984 at a McDonald’s fast food restaurant on San Ysidro Boulevard in San Diego, California, 41-year-old James Huberty shot and killed 21 people aged from eight months to 74 years with a gun and pistols. Another 19 people were injured of varying severity. The shooter was eliminated by a sniper of the special forces. A few days before the incident, Huberty, who complained to his wife about mental problems, tried to make an appointment by phone at a psychiatric clinic, but they mixed up his last name and could not call back in time in response to his request. On the eve of the mass execution, Huberty, in a conversation with his wife, referring to the fact that he had not received a call back from the clinic, said: “Well, society had a chance …” The next day, he took a Browning Hi-Power pistol, an Uzi submachine gun, a Winchester 1200 rifle and went to McDonald’s. This event was considered the largest mass shooting in the United States before the shooting at the Luby’s restaurant at 1991 year.

SIX BLOODEST TERRORIST ATTACKS AT CONCERTS, IN CINEMAS AND CLUBS -Ost” on October 23, 2002, became the largest of those that took place in the capital of Russia. The controversy surrounding it is still going on. Relatives of those killed during the assault and former hostages are convinced that the responsibility for the numerous victims lies not only with the terrorists, but also with the Russian authorities. In total, according to official figures, 130 people died ( LIST ) from among the hostages (according to the public organization “Nord-Ost” – 174 people ). Many hostages were killed during the assault.

The attack was carried out by Chechen fighters, including suicide bombers, who sought the withdrawal of Russian troops from Chechnya. They broke into the house of culture during the performance, announced that they were taking all the spectators, the troupe and workers hostage, and began to mine the building. More than 900 people were taken prisoner. Negotiations with the terrorists lasted until the early morning of October 26, when the command was given by the operational headquarters to storm the building. Gas was released into the hall, which was supposed to lull the terrorists, but its use also led to the death of the hostages. 119the dead died from the consequences of the use of gas already in hospitals, where they were taken after the assault. Over 700 people were injured. The special operation to free the Nord-Ost hostages is still considered one of the most unsuccessful. ( “Nord-Ost”: hour by hour , PHOTO chronicle of the attack, memories of the hostages – 57 hours of fear ).

USA: premiere of The Dark Knight Rises – 12 killed, 60 injured Nolan about Batman) 24-year-old local resident James Holmes, in the form of an assault unit SWAT, in body armor and a gas mask, threw a smoke bomb at the audience, and then opened fire at them indiscriminately from an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, and then a Remington 870 shotgun (12th caliber) and a Glock 22 pistol. As in the case at Dubrovka, the audience did not immediately believe in the reality of what was happening, many decided that this was part of the performance at the premiere. As a result of the attack 14 people were killed , about 60 were injured. The police arrived at the scene of the attack 90 seconds after the first call and immediately detained the shooter. At the trial, Holmes’s defense stated that he was mentally ill, but the examination did not confirm this. He was charged with 166 counts, including murder and attempted murder. The prosecutor demanded the death penalty for him, but the jury did not reach a unanimous opinion. As a result, the judge gave Holmes a life sentence (12 life sentences) without the right to parole.

The American band Eagles of Death Metal performed to a full house at the Bataclan that evening. At first, the audience counted it as was part of the representation of , but then the panic started. During the special operation, which began about 15 minutes after the start of the attack, the terrorists were either killed or detonated their suicide belts. During the attack in the theater , 89 people were killed , more than 200 were injured. The Islamic State* organization claimed responsibility for the attack, saying that in this way it was avenging the war of the coalition of the United States and its European allies in Syria.

Istanbul: Reina night club – 39killed, about 70 injured

On the night of January 1, 2017, in Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey, an unknown person dressed as Santa Claus shot down visitors to the Reina nightclub, one of the largest and most famous clubs located in the historic Ortakoy district, on shore of the Bosphorus. At the time of the terrorist attack at 1:15 am, there were about 700 people in the club. The perpetrator first shot the policeman at the entrance, and then began firing indiscriminately inside. He fired from a long-barreled weapon. As a result, at least 39 people were killed and about 70 were injured. Among the victims were 25 foreigners, including Russian Nurana Gasanova.
