Also this school has teachers that are specialists in foreign lenguajes and gives special support to kids as my son. Their teachers also promote the good relationship between all the kids in their groups.The facilities are excellent, it encourage the right atmosphere for learning.All the staff was always very dispose to help with every question and there where allot from my side, because it is very different as I was used to back in Mexico.All the extra activities they do for parents and kids was very organized and amusement.For my kid was a very good time and even when we all go through de COVID-19 quarantine the teachers and staff was in a very successful form to finish the semester..

      Westside High School (Houston)

      Westside High School is a High School in Houston, Texas, United States. It serves classes from 9at 12 and is part of the Houston Independent School District.

      The school is located at 14201 Briar Forest in Houston, Texas at zip code 77077. Westside High School is located outside of Beltway 8, East of State Highway 6, inside of State Highway 99 (Grand Parkway) and south of Interstate 10 (Kathy Freeway) in Briar Forest.

      Westside is a magnet school for integrated HISD technologies. [2] The program allows students to look at technology from one of five perspectives: visual arts, business, media relations, applied/health sciences, and computer sciences. During the first year, all Magnet students take the Technology Studies course, a modular course that introduces them to the five areas of the program. In their second year, students are asked to choose one of five areas in which they will focus their elective courses. nine0071

      The school’s academic programs are ranked 463, 196, 230, 245 and 1958 in the rankings. Newsweek magazine 2005, [3] 2006 [4] 2007, [5] 2008 and 2013 [6] lists, respectively, the two thousand best high schools in the United States.

      Many students from other parts of the Houston ISD are moving to the Westside to escape homeschools with poor academic performance, resulting in severely deteriorating attendance rates in those schools. nine0189 [7]

      History

      Westside opened in 2000 as a fifty million dollar brand new building with approximately 1,000 students from Lee High School (now Margaret High School Long Wisdom), which was crowded. nine0189 [8] Westside planned to compete with Bellaire and Lamar High Schools in Houston ISD for premier status. It initially had a reputation as a school that could attract private school students to a public school. [9] When Westside opened, Lee’s attendance border residents were given the option to visit Westside instead of Lee without providing free transportation. [10] The school initially had 1,772 students, including 340 students who were not enrolled in HISD in the previous school year. nine0189 [11] Westside is so named because it is located in western Houston. [12]

      Scott Van Beek was Westside’s first director. In 2005, he was appointed head of the Western District. [13] Later that year, Paul Castro became director of Westside; [14] he was 29 years old when he first served as principal. [15] That year, about 300 students from New Orleans displaced by Hurricane Katrina entered Westside, causing overcrowding, bringing the total student population to over 3,000. [14] According to an October 2006 HISD newsletter, Westside was one of the four high schools that received the most refugees from Hurricane Katrina. [ citation needed ]

      By March 2006, Westside had published slightly lower SAT and alumni than Lamar and Bellaire. In a March 2006 Houston Press article, Dr. Robert Sanborn, president and CEO of Children at Risk, said that Westside’s “slow progress”, as article author Todd Spivak paraphrased, was more disappointing than Lamar’s dropout rates and Bellera. nine0189 [9]

      In the fall of the 2008-2009 school year, Westside High School opened an oil academy called the Westside Engineering and Geosciences Academy. [16]

      In 2007, 6% of Westside high school age children chose to attend alternative ISD Houston schools. [17]

      In 2010, Richard Connelly of Houston Press said Westside had become “something of a HISD success story”. [18]

      In 2010, Castro was promoted to Principal of Lee High School (now Margaret Long Wisdom High School). [19]

      Westside is located on a 50-acre (20 ha) campus, [21] is located along Briar Forest Road near the Texas State Highway 6. [22] There are several gated communities near the school. [21]

      The school was built for $50 million. The school has one auditorium, two theatres, four sports fields, 11 music practice rooms, an orchestra hall, a concert hall, a radio studio, a ceramics studio and computer labs. Melissa Hung of Houston Press wrote in 2000 that “the dining area looks more like a college food court than a high school cafeteria.” [22]

      Westside has a three-year entrepreneurship program developed by the National Restaurant Education Foundation to teach students how to run a business . nine0189 [25] Outback Steakhouse sponsors the program and helped build a full-scale commercial kitchen and canteen in the school.

      The school uses the restaurant as part of an entrepreneurship course, [26] called Entrepreneur 101: Living the American Dream. [27] Course using curriculum developed by the Restaurant Association of Texas Educational Foundation (TRAEF) includes classroom instruction for first-year students (freshmen) and restaurant work for second-year (sophomore) and third-year (junior) students under the direction of general managers and teachers of Outback. nine0189 [28] As of 2003, there were six classes with 140 students.
