Edison is a county located in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The Edison Hotel is located in downtown New Jersey, at the heart of the state’s Raritan Valley region and is part of the New York metropolitan area. The township takes its original name from the Raritan indigenous people. Portions of the township were taken to form Metuchen on March 20, 1900 and Highland Park on March 15, 1905. The name was officially changed to Edison Township on November 10, 1954, in honor of the inventor Thomas Edison, who had his main laboratory. in the Menlo Park neighborhood of the village.

History

History of the Early Ages

The earliest inhabitants of the area were the Raritan people of these Lenape Native Americans who lived in the area and traveled through it to the coast. In 1646, the leader Matushin led a group of 1200 soldiers.

Edison Township, consisting of the former sections of the townships of Piscataway and Woodbridge, was settled (by Europeans) in the 17th century. The earliest village was Piscatawaytown, which is centered around St. James Church and the Piscatawaytown Common near the intersection of Plainfield and Woodbridge Avenue in south Edison. Laing House of Plainfield Plantation (listed on the National Register at 1988) Benjamin Shotwell House (listed 1987) and Craftsmen at Oak Ridge (listę 1995), is a building from the colonial era, listed on the National Register of Historic Places listings in Middlesex County.

The community was formerly known as “Raritan Township”, not to be confused with the current Raritan Township in Hunterdon County.

Edison era

In 1876, Thomas Edison established his home and research laboratory in New Jersey on a failed development in Raritan Township called “Menlo Park” (now located in Edison State Park). The Menlo Park Laboratory has played an important role in being one of the first laboratories involved in the practical and commercial application of research. It was in his laboratory in Menlo Park that Thomas Edison invented the phonograph and the commercially viable filament of the incandescent light bulb. Christie Street was the first street in the world to use electric lighting for lighting. Edison subsequently left Menlo Park and moved his home and laboratory to West Orange in 1886.

20th century

Near the village of Piscatawaytown, part of the township was informally known as “Nixon” after Lewis Nixon, a manufacturer and community leader. Shortly after the outbreak of World War I, Nixon established a large volatile chemical processing facility there known as the Nixon Nitration Works. It was the site of the 1924 Nixon Nitration Works disaster, a massive explosion and subsequent fire that killed 20 people and destroyed several square miles of the township.

In 1954, the township’s name was changed to honor inventor Thomas A. Edison. Also on the 1954 ballot was a rejected proposal to change the community’s name to Nixon.

21st Century

Edison was one of New Jersey’s fastest growing municipalities. It was the fifth most populous municipality in the state, after the cities of Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, and Elizabeth, according to the 2000 United States Census.

Edison is primarily a middle class community with over 75 ethnic communities represented. Near Highland Park, Edison has a large Jewish community with many synagogues located in Edison. Edison also has a growing Indian community and a number of temples catering to the religious needs of the community. Asian Community

Edison is one of the major centers of Asian American cultural diversity. Growing Little India is a South Asian oriented commercial area in Middlesex County, the county in the United States with the largest concentration of Asian Indians. A strip of Oak Tree Road stretches for about a mile and a half through Edison and nearby Iselin in Woodbridge Township near sprawling Chinatown and Koreatown and runs along New Jersey Route 27. 2010 Census

The 2010 US Census counted 99,967 people, 34,972 households, and 26,509 families in the township. The population density was 3,339.0 per square mile (1289.2/km ²). There were 36,302 housing units at an average density of 1212.5 per square mile (468.1/km ²). The racial makeup was 44.10% (44084) White, 7.05% (7,046) Black or African American, 0.23% (229) Native American, 43.19% (43,177) Asian, Pacific Islander 0.04% (36), 2.72% (2.718) from other races and 2.68% (2677) from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 8.11% (8,112) of the population.

Of 34,972 households, 36.4% had children under the age of 18; 62.3% were married couples living together; In 9.6% of families, women lived without husbands, and 24.2% did not have a family. The racial makeup of the population was 59.49% White, 29.27% Asian, 6.89% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.02% from other races, and 2.15% representatives of two or more races. 6.37% of the population is Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 35,136 families, of which 34.3% had children under the age of 18, 61.1% were married couples, 9.1% of women’s families lived without husbands, and 26.3% did not have a family. 21.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. Manufacturing

A number of manufacturing plants in and around the area including Edison Assembly, a Ford Motor Company plant manufacturing Rangers, Mustangs, Pintos, Mercurys and Lincolns. Other well-known companies include the Frigidaire air conditioning plant in Edison, Siemens in Edison.

Starting in the 2000s, production began to leave Central Jersey and many businesses closed and moved overseas. The Ford plant was demolished by 2008 and replaced by Sam’s Club, Topgolf and Starbucks.

Local Government

Edison Township operates under the Faulkner Act, formally known as the Optional Municipal Charter Act, under a mayor-council form of government that was introduced effective January 1, 1958 based on the recommendations of the Charter Study Commission. In the 2013 gubernatorial election, Republican Chris Christie received 58.6% of the vote (12,502 votes), ahead of Democrat Barbara Buono with 393% (8,373 votes) and other candidates with 2.1% (443 votes) out of 21,877 ballots cast in the village, 55,392 voters were registered (559 ballots were spoiled) with a turnout of 39.5%. Edison Township Public Schools serve students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The district’s two high schools separate South and North Edison. The Edison High School Zone South has six K–5 elementary schools, and the JP Stevens High School zone has five K-5 elementary schools. As of the 2017-18 school year, the district, made up of 19 schools, enrolled 16,203 students and 1,029.8 class teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student-teacher ratio of 15.7:1. As of the 2017–18 academic year, the school had an enrollment of 395 students and 33.0 school teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student-teacher ratio of 12.0:1.

Eighth grade students from across Middlesex County are eligible to apply for high school programs offered by Middlesex Vocational Schools, a district vocational school district that offers full-time career and technical education at the Middlesex County Academy in Edison, the Academy of Allied Medical and Biomedical Sciences in Woodbridge Township and East Brunswick, Perth Amboy and Piscataway Technical High Schools, with no student fees. Middlesex County College is home to the Middlesex County Academy of Science, Mathematics and Engineering Technology, an engineering high school that is part of the Middlesex County Vocational Schools. High School is free to all Middlesex County residents, but admission is based on a test, past grades, and other academic and extracurricular activities. About 160 students attend the academy, 40 in each class from across the district.

Private Schools

Bishop George Ahr High School (9-12), St. Helena’s School (PreK-8) and St. Matthew’s School (PreK-8) operate under the supervision of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Metuchen. Jewish schools in the borough that operate independently include the Rabbi Jacob Joseph School, Rabbi Pesach Raymon Yeshiva (PreK-8, founded in 1945) and Shaarei Tzion Yeshiva (PreK-8, opened in 1992).

Other private schools in Edison include Lakeview School (for children ages 3 to 21 with disabilities), Our Lady of Peace School, and Wardlaw-Hartridge School (PreK-12, founded in 1882).

In 1998, Thomas Jefferson High School opened the Huaxia Edison Chinese School, teaching Simplified Chinese on Sunday afternoons, which subsequently moved to Herbert Hoover High School. Huaxia currently resides at Edison High School. However, many families from Taiwan send their children to Edison Chinese School located in John Adams High School or Tzu Chi located in Woodrow Wilson High School. Both of these schools teach Traditional Chinese. JP Stevens High School offers Mandarin Chinese and Hindi as an elective language for students who are interested in learning it.

Colleges

Lincoln Technical Institute (or Lincoln Tech) is a non-profit vocational school located in Edison. Lincoln Tech offers a variety of nursing, medical, and computer applications programs.

Middlesex County College (MCC) is a public two-year community college located in Edison at the intersection of Woodbridge Avenue and Mill Road.

The Livingston Rutgers University campus is located in the former Camp Kilmer, partly located in Edison.

Roads and Highways

Edison is a transportation hub with an extensive highway network that runs through the community and connects major cities in the Northeast, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Trenton, New Jersey, Washington, DC, and others. As of May 2010, the borough had a total of 307.05 miles (494.15 km) of roads, of which 257.31 miles (414.10 km) were maintained by the municipality, 29.78 miles (47.93 km) by Middlesex County and 14.75 miles (23.74 km). to the New Jersey Department of Transportation and 5.21 miles (8.38 km) from the New Jersey Authority.

State roads include Routes 27 and 440 which are operated by the state. U.S. Route 1 also passes through the township. Interstate 287 passes through Edison where the south end is at I-95. The municipality is also home to an approximately 5-mile (8.0 km) section of the New Jersey Turnpike (Interstate 95 ). Exit 10 is in Edison, with a 13-lane gate and a unique interchange design. When the “double-double” mainline scheme was created, it first began at Edison and continued north to Exit 14 in Newark. This continued until 1973, when “dual-dual” was extended south from 10 to Exit 9 in East Brunswick Township (and then extended further south in 1990 to Exit 8A in Monroe Township).

Since Interstate 287 connects to Interstate 87 (New York State Highway), Exit 10 (motorway) is one of the busiest interchanges used for tractor trailers as it connects the New Jersey Turnpike to the New York State Turnpike. For truckers, this is the only direct limited access road they have from Turnpike to Thruway, as Garden State Parkway, whose northern terminus is at Thruway, forbids trucks from using the roadway north of Exit 105.

In 2009, Edison was selected by the New Jersey Department of Transportation as one of the first communities to have a red light camera turn off control system. The program was terminated by the state in December 2014, despite a more than 30% reduction in crashes at three camera-controlled intersections in the township.

Public Transportation

Edison Station, located in South Edison, is served by NJ Transit trains northbound to Newark Penn Station and Penn Station New York, and southbound to Trenton Transit Center via the Northeast Corridor Line with connections to Amtrak and SEPT. Some passengers in North Edison are closer to and may prefer Metropark station (next to nearby Iselin in Woodbridge township) or Metuchen station.

NJ Transit bus service is available on route 62 to Newark, with local service on routes 801, 804, 805, 810, 813, 814, 819, 978, and 979.

Taiwan’s China Airlines provides private bus service to John F. Kennedy International Airport from Edison’s Kam Man Food restaurant to provide service to Taipei, Taiwan.

Healthcare

JFK Medical Center, located on James Street off Parsonage Road, is a 498 beds, founded in 1967.

The Roosevelt Relief Center is a long-term/subacute care facility located east of Roosevelt Park. The facility was originally built in 1936 under the auspices of the Works Projects Administration.

Edison is served by the Raritan Valley Regional Ambulance Service. The squad consists of three units: Edison First Aid Squad (established in 1935), Edison First Aid Squad #2 (since 1936) and Clara Barton First Aid Squad (since 1951 years old). The three departments merged in 2009 to provide Edison residents with more comprehensive care. RVREMS receives support from paramedics at JFK Medical Center. The unit consists of approximately 50 ambulance volunteers.

In 1982, the BPU and New Jersey Bell, after receiving thousands of complaints from residents of North and South Edison, made an exception that any calls originating and ending in the Borough would be considered local. This was due to the construction of a new home in Edison, where existing cables that belonged to Rahway’s central office were assigned to provide new telephone service to more than 400 homes.

In 1997, Edison introduced mandatory ten-digit dialing with the introduction of the 732 area code. John F. Kennedy Medical Center (JFK) , Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) affiliate, is a 49-hour full-service acute care hospital9 beds and the home of the Johnson Rehabilitation Institute. The hospital is affiliated with the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall University and the Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine, and is located in Edison, New Jersey. ^[1]

JFK Medical Center in the 1960s in the 1960s as a massive campaign in response to a growing demand demand on medical services caused by rapid population growth in Edison, Woodbridge, Metuchen and surrounding areas. This effort was spearheaded by the late Edison Mayor Anthony M. Jelencic, after whom the original community hospital was named. Mayor Jelenčić was appointed chairman of the board of the future hospital, and his first official act was to establish a women’s support service. The Mayor has asked longtime community resident and advocate Ms. Charles Vira of Edison to take charge of launching Auxiliary Services – to raise funds and solicit support for a future community hospital. Mayor Jelencic persuaded Edison officials to donate about 40 acres of the township’s land for the hospital. He then lobbied with Congressional leaders such as Middlesex County House Representative Edward J. Patten to win $1.1 million in Hill Burton funds, which at the time represented the largest single grant made in the state of New Jersey under this programs. By this time, before the hospital even opened its doors, Auxiliaries had raised over $110,000 in donations.

In 1974, the Johnson Rehabilitation Institute (JRI) was added as a major component of the JFK Medical Center. Fire from the sky and Gogol’s overcoat

On the evening of May 20, 1873, the “little sun” lit up on Odessa Street in St. Petersburg: ordinary kerosene burners were replaced with incandescent lamps in eight lanterns. Dozens of people gathered around them. Some of them specially brought newspapers with them. The very fact that in the evening you can safely read on the street in “bright white light” seemed like a miracle.

Residents of St. Petersburg enthusiastically called incandescent lamps “fire from heaven” and “light without fire.” And the engineer Nikolai Popov remembered the Preobrazhensky parade ground, where, in Gogol’s story, Akaky Akakievich’s overcoat was removed.

“Had Lodygin been born early and illuminate these places described in Gogol’s “The Overcoat”, the robbers would not have dared to take off the overcoat from the timid Akaky Akakievich,” Popov noted.

The author of the “little sun” was the Russian scientist Alexander Lodygin. The concept was not his: the idea to use a hot wire as a filament belongs to the Scot James Bowman Lindsey, and in 1838 the Belgian Marcellin Jobar received a patent for a glass lamp. Lodygin’s innovation is an incandescent lamp with a carbon rod.

Initially, Lodygin’s lamps burned for only half an hour. But then one of the inventor’s students had an idea: what if we create a vacuum inside the glass? Lodygin did just that. As a result, his lamps could burn for about 1000 hours.

However, the “lighting question” was just one of the many tasks that Lodygin set himself as a scientist. So, back in the 60s of the XIX century, he invented and designed something like an airship driven by an electric motor. The “flying machine”, or “electroplane”, as the scientist called his brainchild, could lift up to 2000 pounds of cargo into the air. Outwardly, Lodygin’s invention resembled a modern helicopter. But the project of the young scientist did not arouse interest in scientific circles, like his other idea – to create a special diving apparatus, something like an aqualung.

The incandescent lamp became a truly successful project and seemed to be the first step towards recognition of the scientist’s merits. In 1874, he received a patent for it, and then was awarded the Lomonosov Prize from the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences.

The scientist founded the Russian Association of Electric Lighting “Lodygin and Co. ” and prudently patented the lamp in Spain, Italy, Saxony, France, Austria-Hungary, Belgium, Great Britain, Sweden, as well as in India and Australia.

Lodygin did not receive an American patent. As it turned out, this was a fatal mistake.

The sorcerer from Menlo Park and the coronation of the Russian Tsar

In 1877, a Russian Navy lieutenant named Khotinsky arrived in the United States. He was an acquaintance of Lodygin and was proud of it. Khotinsky in the States met the American inventor and entrepreneur Thomas Edison and showed him his friend’s incandescent lamp. The invention of the Russian colleague of the American was clearly interested.

November 15, 1878, with the support of investors, Edison founded the Edison Electric Light Co. Her tasks included experiments with electric lighting and monitoring patents that are issued in this area.

Edison did not like luxury and entertainment, he was indifferent to food, he had no bad habits, except for the love of good cigars. But work was Edison’s real passion. He could work 16-19 hours a day. His energy was enough not only to work, but also to manage the laboratory.

Edison personally supervised the hiring of employees. He was the first person who came up with the idea of questioning candidates when applying for a job. Edison’s questionnaire could contain the most unexpected questions – for example, where is the Volga. The inventor believed that his employees should have erudition.

In addition, they must be hardy. Indeed, in the Edison laboratory, they often worked so hard that they literally fell asleep at the workplace. The inventor himself later said: “I owe my success to the fact that I never kept a clock in my workplace.”

Probably another reason why Edison succeeded was that he felt promising ideas and did not miss his own. So, in 1879, the inventor demanded in court to ban the production of incandescent lamps with a carbon rod in Europe – the lamps that Lodygin invented. The Edison court refused.

The American inventor, meanwhile, decided to come up with his own version of the incandescent lamp. Instead of coal, Edison decided to use plant material. He conducted experiments with 6,000 different plants.

It took $ 10,000 to find the right samples and deliver them to Edison, 40-50 scientists and electrical engineers participated in the search, and on expeditions each of them slept only 4-6 hours. As a result, the desired plant was found: Edison decided to use bamboo fiber.

Edison’s perseverance paid off. As a result, the lamp improved by him could burn and not burn out for several weeks.

On New Year’s Eve 1880 in Menlo Park, New Jersey, hundreds of incandescent lamps hanging from wires between trees were lit in front of 3,000 people. After this, Thomas Edison began to be called the “magician of Menlo Park.”

After a successful demonstration of incandescent lamps in 1881, Edison established a factory to manufacture them. The American inventor certainly had an entrepreneurial flair. Edison installed electric lighting on Pearl Street in Lower Manhattan’s financial district in 1882. After that, lamps quickly began to gain popularity. If in 1882 he sold 400 lamps, then the next year – already more than 10,000.

Edison’s business grew. He founded several more companies and a plant for the production of incandescent lamps. And in 1883, the American inventor took part in the coronation of the Russian Tsar Alexander III. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower in the Kremlin was illuminated by 3,500 Edison incandescent lamps.

Two completely different boys

At first glance, Alexander Lodygin and Thomas Edison are absolutely different from each other. They were both born in 1847, but in different countries and as if in different worlds. Lodygin was born in the Tambov province in a poor, but very noble noble family – it is possible that Lodygin has a common ancestor with the Romanov dynasty.

Edison’s father, Sam, was a fugitive Canadian rebel, and his mother was a former school teacher.

As the son of nobles and hereditary officers, Lodygin had to make a military career. This is what his family expected of him. At the age of 12, he was sent to study at the Tambov Cadet Corps. Nobody expected anything from Edison.

Thomas had big problems with his studies. Three months after the start of classes, the teacher said that the boy was stupid. The mother, in anger, took the child out of school and took care of his education herself.

While Lodygin studied at the cadet corps and received a systematic education, Edison earned his living. At first, Thomas sold vegetables and fruits. And then he came up with a much more profitable business. As a teenager, Edison noticed that passengers at railway stations willingly bought newspapers. He decided: why not create his own information leaflet? Thomas agreed with the conductor of the mail car and placed a pre-purchased printing press there.

While the train was traveling from one station to another, Edison managed to print a small number of information leaflets. Then he sold them. So Thomas was earning $20-30 a month. Edison really needed the money. The young man became interested in science, in particular chemistry. And for the experiments it was necessary to buy materials.

Young Edison’s business venture ended tragically. There was a fire in the car, Thomas was injured and almost deaf. However, this did not stop Edison’s career. Once a young man saved the three-year-old son of the station master. To thank Thomas, a happy father taught him the telegraph code, which was used on the railways. Thanks to this, at the age of 16, Thomas became a station telegraph operator.

Such different peers were united by one thing – a passion for science. Even while studying at the Cadet Corps, Lodygin fell in love with physics. He got a job as a laboratory assistant in a physics office, and also became an apprentice at a weather station. Becoming a second lieutenant, the young man decided to leave his military career. The family broke off relations with Lodygin, but he was not upset. Like Edison, the young man was not afraid of hard work (for some time he worked as a hammer) and was ready to go to his goal.

The scientist goes on the attack

Lodygin’s life has been let down time after time by the lack of businessman’s talent. His incandescent lamps made a splash in St. Petersburg, but the business of the scientist was not going well. Lodygin decided to start trading in shares in order to unwind. But he did not succeed in this either. His company was bankrupt.

In addition, Lodygin had a more successful competitor in Russia – Pavel Yablochkov (the same age as Alexander and Thomas, also born in 1847). In 1876, he patented the “electric candle”, that is, the arc lamp.

Hermetic Lodygin lamp with a carbon rod was much closer to what is now an incandescent light bulb. In addition, in Yablochkov’s “candles” it was necessary to constantly replace coal blocks. Meanwhile, Lodygin’s lamps could be turned on and off many times.

Nevertheless, Yablochkov’s “candle” unexpectedly eclipsed Lodygin’s invention. The fact is that Yablochkov held a spectacular demonstration of his lamp at a scientific and technical exhibition in London.

Journalists were delighted, in Europe they wrote that “the invention of the Russian engineer Yablochkov is a new era in technology”, and Russia is “the birthplace of electricity”. So arc lamps became incredibly popular. According to contemporaries, “nothing spread as quickly as Yablochkov’s candles.” Meanwhile, Lodygin’s lamp was in the shade, and it seemed as if they had almost forgotten about it at home.

Another circumstance prevented the scientist from setting up a business and trying to make it efficient. In 1884, Lodygin had to leave Russia: persecution and mass arrests of Narodnaya Volya and those who sympathized with the ideas of the revolution began. The Russian inventor was in danger: back in 1875, he went to the populist colony and spent three years there. Lodygin left and lived in France and the USA. He continued to invent: he came up with an electric furnace, developed various projects, such as an electric car and electric welding machines.

Lodygin did not consider the incandescent light bulb to be the main invention in his life. For him, the aircraft was much more important. Initially, Lodygin was engaged in other projects, just to find money to create his own electric plane.

However, the inventor was not going to give up the authorship of the light bulb without a fight. If Yablochkov came up with his own concept of a lamp and there could be no complaints against him, then Edison was clearly inspired by someone else’s idea.

Lodygin was not the only dissatisfied. Dozens of scientists tried to challenge the fact that it was the enterprising American who was the author of the invention. However, Edison knew how not only to manage a business, but also to defend his rights. He spent $2 million on legal fees and emerged victorious.

Then Lodygin decided to defeat Edison in a different way. He got a job working for Edison’s main competitor, George Westinghouse, and at the same time began to develop a more advanced version of the incandescent lamp. The inventor literally bombarded the US Patent Office with patent applications. In 1888 alone, he tried to get three patents for different variations of his invention. Finally, in 1893, Lodygin received a patent for a lamp of an original design: it used a metal wire as a heating body.

The inventor went further and came up with the idea of taking threads from “non- malleable
refractory metals”. In particular, Lodygin decided to take tungsten, which is still used today. The scientist tried to patent all successful versions of the incandescent lamp. So, in 1894 he received another patent, and in 1897 – two at once.

Improved bulbs burned brighter than normal and were three times more efficient. In 1900, Lodygin demonstrated a new version of his invention at the World Exhibition in Paris. He also launched a plant in the United States for the electrochemical production of metal for filaments, in particular titanium and tungsten, and another one for the production of electric vehicles of his own design.

However, failure again awaited Lodygin – things did not go well: the entrepreneur’s lack of talent again let him down. The inventor was forced to look for another way to earn a living.

Lodygin got a job as a worker at a battery factory in Buffalo. He was then promoted to engineer and senior chemist. In 1902, the inventor found a new job. This time he became an engineer at a subway construction site in New York. In this position, Lodygin stayed until the end of the work. At 19In 06, the scientist sold a patent for incandescent lamps with a tungsten filament to the General Electric company, founded, among other things, by Thomas Edison.

It was said that the scientist sold the patent “for a pittance”. The money received was barely enough to return to Russia. At home, Lodygin returned to the dream of an aircraft. He sent to the War Department a design for a “cyclogyro”, much like a modern helicopter. The application was not considered: Lodygin’s ideas again seemed absolutely fantastic to everyone.

After the February Revolution of 1917, the Russian scientist again emigrated to the United States, this time for good. It turned out to be difficult for Lodygin to look for a place under the sun in a foreign country again. He fell ill, in recent years he did not get out of bed and became impoverished. March 16, 1923 Lodygin died.

In contrast, Edison ended his life quite differently. He managed to get 1093 patents, and his fortune was estimated at $ 15 billion. In recent years, Edison was very interested in life after death. He even said that he was working on a special device that would allow him to communicate with the dead, a kind of “necrophone”.

Shortly before his death, Edison said: “It’s good if there is an afterlife. If it doesn’t, that’s fine too. After all, I lived my life with pleasure and did everything I could. ”

Both Edison and Lodygin changed our lives beyond recognition. And the incandescent light bulb, perhaps, is fair to call at least their common invention. However, in a strange twist of fate, this development went down in history as the creation of one man – Thomas Edison. And Alexander Lodygin is a vivid example of how brilliant inventors without an entrepreneurial streak sometimes end up with nothing.
