The minds, hearts and souls of our children, grandchildren and generations to come are at stake.
Every child is uniquely gifted by God. So from K4 through high school, you can be sure your student will have an environment to explore, discover and develop his or her God-given gifts, talents and skills.
Our ultimate goal is to graduate students who are prepared academically and spiritually to be a light in their community, to understand the nature of God and His Word, and to impact the world for Christ.
We understand the financial investment and sacrifice associated with private Christian education.
A generous tuition assistance program is available for qualifying families.

Kerri Wodzinski: Director
God placed working with children on my heart when I was a young child. When I entered college, though I had other ideas in mind, God quickly directed my path towards education. I graduated from Juniata college with a dual certification in early childhood and elementary education.
I have taught in a variety of school settings through the years, most recently spending seven years as the kindergarten teacher at BVCP. I love being immersed with children in an environment which fosters both a love for learning about the world around them and Jesus’ love and faithfulness for us.
I have now been called onto the path of director of the preschool. It is a gift and blessing to have the privilege of being on the early learning journey with each child and family.
When I am not surrounding myself with all things Preschool, I can be found fostering my daughters’ love for horses and teaching riding lessons to children of all ages. I live in Chester County, PA, with my husband, two daughters, cats, dogs and horses.
Amy Hickey: Lead Teacher, Kindergarten
I graduated from the University of Maryland with a Masters in Social Work in 2000. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to stay home with my children once my husband and I started our family. As my children began to grow older and graduate from Brandywine Valley Christian Preschool and Kindergarten, I couldn’t bear the thought of leaving the school. I was fortunate enough to be hired in the 2-year-old classroom initially. After working with the little lambs for two years, I was blessed with our fourth child and took two years off from teaching to spend time with her. I have an Early Childcare Education Certificate from Delaware Technical College. When I am not at BVCP, I am volunteering at my children’s school, running kids to practices and lessons or doing laundry.
Susan Baer: Assistant Teacher, Kindergarten
I have been an assistant preschool teacher and substitute at Brandywine Valley Christian Preschool since 2010. I was born and raised in Wilmington, DE, as was my husband, Bob, and, now our three teenage sons, Thomas, Bobby and Daniel. I enjoy volunteering in both the children’s and youth ministries at Brandywine Valley Baptist Church. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, playing board games and doing puzzles.
Emily Tobia: Lead Teacher, Pre-K Class
I graduated with a from American University in 2002 with a degree is Elementary Education. I received my Masters in Literacy from Wilmington University. I taught 1st and 2nd grade until I had my first child. I was fortunate to be able to stay home with my children for a few years. When my daughter started school at Brandywine Valley, I became a long term sub there for a year before starting in the 3-day Pre-K class.
MJ Sun: Co-Teacher, Pre-K Class
I graduated from University of Delaware with a degree in Human Development Family Studies. I am very involved with children’s ministry at my church in Pennsylvania. From youth to adult years, I have volunteered as a teacher for Korean school, vacation Bible school and Sunday school with different age groups. Right after college, God graciously gifted me with a son and two years later a daughter. Upon visiting BVCP in desperate search to find and enroll my son to his first preschool, I felt the spark inside of me. That this was the school that God had chosen for my children and also for myself. In my heart, I knew this place is where God wanted me to plant my seed and grow for my future after completing my early childhood education program. I am very thankful that God led both my children and myself here.
Julianne Cruser: Lead Teacher, Three’s Class
I’m blessed to be able to return to Brandywine Valley Christian Preschool for another year. As a child I wanted to be a mother and a teacher. I was raised in Lancaster County and moved to North Wilmington as an adult where I have had the opportunity to be a stay at home mom. Although a country girl at heart, I love my little piece of North Wilmington and all the convenience it provides such as the opportunity to teach preschool age children. I love to interact with children and engage them at their level. I enjoy teaching, encouraging, and watching children grow into all that God has created them to be. Outside of the classroom you can find me cheering my three boys on at the baseball field and doing arts & crafts with my daughter. I also enjoy decorating and designing along side my husband.
Maria Gonzalez: Lead Teacher, Three’s Class
Born and raised in Brooklyn and attended New York University where I acquired my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama. After a decade on the West Coast, my husband and I relocated back East to be closer to family. I was first introduced to BVBC as a brand new MOPS mom of my only daughter and made the decision to send her to BVCP. That was in 2011 and I have been here, first as a parent, and then as an Assistant Teacher, and, most recently as a Lead, ever since. I have an Early Childcare Certificate and enjoy learning about and implementing best practices into our classroom. When I am not teaching at BVCP, you can find me teaching after school drama classes to local elementary students or directing youth plays at Wilmington Drama League.
Tina Fernandes: Assistant Teacher, Three’s Class
I first began working at Brandywine Valley Christian Preschool (BVCP) in 2014 and am blessed to continue working in such a family-oriented workspace. As a stay-at-home mom, I was looking for a preschool for my daughter. I learned about BVCP and enrolled her. When she started Pre-K, I applied as a substitute. After working as a substitute, I began working as an assistant in the 2’s class for two years. I then moved onto the 3’s class and finally Pre-K. The following year, I was gifted with my second daughter and took a break for two years. I am back now with the 3’s and am so thankful for it. I love working with kids and am so grateful for the opportunity to see them grow and learn in their beginning years. I enjoy taking bike rides with my 12 year old and playing dress up with my little one. I also love reading in my spare time.
Michelle Baker: Assistant Teacher, Three’s Class
I graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and from Denver Seminary with a Master’s degree in Counseling Ministries. I have had the opportunity to work with children in a variety of settings for over twenty years. My background includes being a nanny, directing a preschool program within a facility for homeless women and children, and teaching Sunday School. My husband and I have two daughters. I enjoy cooking for my family, being outdoors, 80’s music, and coffee.
Meri Wheeler: Lead Teacher, Two’s Class / Kindergarten Art Teacher
I feel called to be here at BVCP helping the children grow in all areas of development. I enjoy getting to know each child and appreciate their unique differences and their love of learning. I enjoy teaching them about God’s love through Bible stories, songs, and books. I desire their preschool experience to be positive and fun and I hope to instill a love of learning that will last a lifetime. I am married with two adventurous boys. When I’m not in the classroom, you can find me spending time with my family, volunteering for various church activities and fostering dogs.
Anne Kozicki: Assistant Teacher, Two’s Class
Heidi Friedkin: Gym Teacher
I graduated from University of Delaware with a Physical Education and Health Degree. I taught Driver Education for 5 years at Padua Academy, while coaching field hockey and gymnastics. I stayed home for a few years to raise my 4 children, but even then was always working with kids somewhere; Sunday School, VBS, gymnastics classes and volunteering on the Children’s Ministry team at BVBC with the most awesome women and mentors. When my kids were all in school I came to BVCP and have been teaching gym and an after school gymnastics program since 2005 and have loved every minute. I love spending time with my husband and family, spending time with the BVBC youth, doing anything outdoors and especially love being at Phillies games. My very favorite thing is being a Nana!

History
Map of ethnic enclaves 1910 Newark, NJ
The name “The Ironbound” is said to have come from the large metalworking industry in the area or from the network of railroad tracks that surrounded the area. [1] Balbach Smelting & Refining Company, now the location of Riverbank Park, was the second largest metalworking facility in the US until it closed in the 1920s. [4]
Ironbound was an industrial area in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Benjamin Moore’s paint workers, Ballantine Beer Company Murphy Varnish, and Conmar Zippers lived alongside railroad and dock workers. The area was also home to Hensler’s Beer Brewery and Pride of Newark (“P.O.N.”). Feigenspan Brewery. The Ironbound were poorer than the rest of Newark at the time. The legacy of 19th century poverty can be seen in the area’s architecture – there are very few of them. brown stones or even brick houses in the area. The residents were thought to be in such need of help that Protestant Reformers founded the Bethel Mission there in 1850.
Former Fire Station 8 Ferry Street
Like today, in the 19th century the Ironbound had residents of many ethnic groups, including Germans, Lithuanians, Italians and Poles. The Lithuanians built the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1894 and the Trinity Church in 1902. The Church of St. Casimir was founded under the auspices of Poland in 1908. As an example of the size of the German community in the Iron Chain, before the First World War, Wilson Avenue was called Hamburg Place.
Salons were the main meeting places for workers at Ironbound before the advent of radio and television. Overview 1912 years discovered 122 salons in the neighborhood. Salons served as boarding houses for men. [5] .
The first Portuguese immigrants arrived in the 1910s. By 1921, the Portuguese population had grown large enough to establish Sport Club Portugal, the first of over twenty Portuguese social clubs to call Ironbound home.
Many houses and apartments in Ironbound feature elaborate azulejos. One common image of Our Lady of Fatima, seen here.
Galician & Jewish immigrants also settled in Ironbound. In the 1930s, Spanish Catholics built an elaborate catacomb under the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Realistic wax images of saints and martyrs are placed in the catacombs, since there are no burials there. The walls, ceilings and floors of the catacombs are decorated with mosaics and frescoes. The church above the catacombs was built in the 1850s for the German Baptist community. ethnic succession.
In 1983, dangerous levels of dioxin were found in an abandoned chemical plant in Ironbound [6] . The Diamond Alkali Company was largely responsible for this contamination due to the large production of Agent Orange between 1951 and 1969. [6] . Off-site cleanup was completed by 1986, and a permanent impervious cover was installed on the site in 1989.
This area became a major transmission hotspot for the COVID-19 pandemic at the end of 2020. [7] [8]
Today
In 2017 [9] at The New York Times described the area as:
The four-square-mile Ironbound Hotel, populated primarily by Portuguese, Spanish, and Latin American immigrants and their descendants, has the intimacy and hustle and bustle of a European market town. “We go to the bakery, to the fish store, to the liquor store,” [the director of the Newark Museum] said. (He also goes to work.) “It’s really an unusually pleasant way of life.”
Portuguese Community
Today Ironbound is known as a Portuguese area. [10] Tap Air Portugal’s corporate office is next door and the Ironbound Ambulance Volunteer Squad has been serving the community since 1969. Ironbound also has its own newspaper. Many Portuguese still live in Ironbound, but many are moving to other areas of New Jersey, including South River, Livingston, Clark, Westfield, Watchung, Old Bridge, etc.
Portugal Day Celebration
Every year, people flock to the annual Portuguese parade and festival known as Portugal Day, Dia de Portugal (usually held on the first or second weekend in June), a grand celebration of Portuguese culture that attracts nearly half a million people, nearly doubling larger than the population of Newark.
During Portugal Day On the weekends many people come out to celebrate the Portuguese-American culture. Ferry Street is also where most football fans gather to celebrate. Fans walk up and down the street while others decorate their cars and celebrate their football team’s victory.
Ecuadorian Festival Day
Ecuadorian Parade and Festival (usually held on the first or second weekend in August) on Ferry Street. In this event, representatives of various businesses and politicians attend the parade and support Ecuadorian culture in a state-recognised celebration. This attracts almost a quarter of a million people to Ironbound.
Brazilian Day Festival
(Usually held on the first or second weekend in September), the Brazilian Day Festival also takes place on Ferry Street. Various street vendors, music concerts and restaurants show support for Brazilian culture. This attracts almost two hundred thousand people to Ironbound.
Demographics
Ironbound mainly consisted of Italians, Polish, Portuguese, and Spaniard Immigrants As time went on, many Italian and Polish immigrants left Ironbound. However, there are still Italians and Poles living in Ironbound. Demographics from the 2000s census include;
57.46% Caucasian (mainly composed of Portuguese, Hispanic, and Italian Ethnicity)
34.94% Hispanic (mainly composed of Brazilians, Ecuadorians, etc.)
0.95% Asian/American Indian
4.68% Black / African American
1.97% Mixed Race
Parks and Recreation
Independence Park
This park is located in the Ironbound area. [11] [12] Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Ironbound’s first Italian parish, overlooks the park. The church hosts an annual Italian festival, which attracts Italian Americans living in the neighborhood and Italians who have moved from Ironbound. [13] [14]
Waterfront Park and Waterfront
Orange Boardwalk and Jackson Street Bridge
A chain of parkland along the Passaic River, especially along the descending “crooked” river that gave the Iron District its nickname “Down Neck”, offers relaxation in the city on the waterfront. In summer, city tours in kayaks and river boats are organized. [15] [16] From east to west along the descending “isthmus” of the Passaic, parkland includes:
- Riverside Park that stretches along the Passaic River Offering “Orange Boardwalk” walkways overlooking the water. [17] [18] [19] Red Bull Arena can be seen looking north across the river towards Harrison Bank.
- Riverbank Park [20] in Iron along the Passaic River. [21] [22]
Education
Public Schools
Newark Public Schools operates six elementary and K-8 schools in the area. Schools serving Ironbound include Wilson Avenue School, Hawkins Street School, Lafayette Street School, and Oliver Street School. In addition, there is the Ann Street School, considered by many to be one of the best elementary schools in the city, and the K-5 South Street School. In fact, Ann Street School received the Blue Ribbon School of Excellence award from the US Department of Education. This competitive award has not previously been presented to Newark Public School. In addition, the award prompted then-U.S. Vice President Al Gore to visit Ann Street to speak about the importance of the upcoming 2000 U.S. Census. [23] [24] East Side High School serves Ironbound High School students. As of 2004, most elementary schools were built more than 100 years before that time. In the 2000s, an increase in housing construction led to overcrowding in schools in the railroad area. At the time, the school district planned to replace several elementary schools and build a new East Side High School on the site of the former Ballantine Brewery. [1]
Private Schools
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark operates the Ironbound Catholic Academy, a PK-8 school in Ironbound. [1] [25] [26] Since 2004, many Ironbound residents have been sending their children to parish schools. [1] There were three other Catholic elementary schools in Ironbound, including St. Benedict Academy, PreK-8 School, St. James Primary and Secondary School, and St. Lucy Filippini Academy. [1] [27] In 2005, the Archdiocese announced that Saints Casimir, Saint Benedict and Saint Lucy Filippini would unite to form the Catholic Academy in the Iron Chain in the place of Saint Casimir. [27] There is also a nursery school of Our Lady of Fatima, a preschool and one Portuguese language school known in Escola Luis de Camões.
