First Discovery Children’s Academy – Preschool & Daycare Serving Newport News and Virginia Beach, VA

Parents rave about the quality of our staff – both teachers and leaders.  Rather than toot our own horn, here’s some excerpts from real reviews about our program:

“The staff takes the time to talk to you and get to know your kid even if they are not in their classroom. The thing I love the best is that it feels like a family.”

““I was immediately greeted with friendly faces that put me at ease.”

“All of the staff here are absolutely amazing! Each and every one of them take time out of their busy schedule to really get to know your child and your family.”

“The teachers at First Discovery are truly amazing.  They are always helpful, cheerful and welcoming.”

We consistently observe, track, and plan for your child’s emerging skills. Assessments are built into our program so that we tailor your child’s learning plan to what they need most. Your child is gently guided towards the next natural next step in their development, ensuring there are no gaps in their learning. This progression establishes a solid foundation for the cognitive, socio-emotional, and physical skills that they need for school and life.

Children learn through play by delving into the hands-on learning style of the Creative Curriculum®. For extra exciting fun and enlightening activities, we supplement their learning with another fantastic curriculum: the Funshine Express®. Every month your child explores new topics and a new theme. They experience a thoroughly engaging early education and a head start on exploring their passions.

Your child learns to express themselves with baby sign language, giving them a jump-start on communicating what they want and need. Bilingualism is also a core part of our program, as exposing your baby to Spanish sounds and words further develop their brain and gives them a lasting dual-language advantage.

The mind-body benefits of yoga are manifold, which is why we invite your child to practice this form of movement every day. Through this activity, children learn to calm themselves; they develop focus and learn the basics of down-regulation for relaxation. We invite your child to exercise with free-play periods and hone specific sports skills like soccer too. Giving your child many opportunities to move means they behave better, think clearer, and learn more readily.

We provide breakfast, lunch, and snacks, so you can rest assured your child is getting the fuel they need while learning and at play. We are a peanut-free environment, and follow guidelines to help your child eat a healthy diet. Including balanced meals in tuition is another way we can support you and your family, and the well-being of your precious little one.

Success and happiness in today’s world are as dependent on learning socio-emotional skills as it is on learning academics. Conscious Discipline is a world-renowned communication method that helps children through difficult times, such as tantrums and emotional outbursts. We teach children to regulate their emotions and deal with stressful situations by lovingly modeling a calm and centered state.

Part of your child’s experiential learning includes excursions to museums and taking in the arts, such as plays. We also host in-house visitors, like storytellers and musicians, to bring excitement to your child’s day-to-day. Giving your child these eye-opening experiences means broadening their horizons and introducing them to culture, history, the arts, and many different admirable professions.

In our preschool and pre-k programs, students work on two STEAM-themed projects every month, in addition to their regular learning schedule. The project themes change so your child can experience an in-depth exploration of the subject matter. These early “investigations” prompt your child to question and think in different ways, teaching them the critical thinking skills, creativity, and problem-solving that will drive their later successes.

By working closely with you, the parent, we strive for an authentic presence in your child’s life. Your child’s learning doesn’t start and stop at school; it is a continuous process that happens with you at home too. We work with each family to provide guidance, expertise, and support when we can. We believe in creating close connections, and that the First Discovery Children’s Academy community is an extended family.

We know how invaluable it is to have peace of mind while you are away from your child. For this reason, we secure our properties, and our yard is fenced in, so no one can wander in and out. Our outside access doors are locked and can only be opened via fob key access, which is provided solely to staff and families at the school. We also have CCTV cameras to monitor our property and match over your child throughout the day.

Your child’s health is crucial to their happiness and performance. Our classrooms are kept immaculate by in-house cleaning staff, staving off common childhood ailments. Our classrooms are sterilized, swept, mopped, and vacuumed, five nights a week. Children learn hygienic practices, such as cleaning up their space and themselves after playtime and washing hands before meals and after toileting.

VISIT VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – BEST RESTAURANTS, BARS AND ATTRACTIONS

Although historically a military town, Virginia Beach may be more to love than the naval airfields and military museums. After all, this city is informally called the “City of Three Beaches”. This means travelers have a choice of where to go to cool off: here’s the main Oceanfront, which runs alongside a 3-mile-long boardwalk filled with shops and restaurants, and Sandbridge to the south (good waves, fewer shops). And to the north there is Chesapeake Bay (quieter, more family friendly).

Between these three areas, Virginia’s most populous city offers plenty of entertainment for beach lovers. The first settlers from Jamestown landed here in 1607, making Virginia Beach a great getaway for history buffs – but with adventure activities, a coastline dotted with picturesque hotels, and some of the best seafood in the country, it’s also a destination for the whole family. .

    Where is Virginia Beach, Virginia?

Located on the southeastern tip of the state, a visit to Virginia Beach takes you to the point where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Chesapeake Bay. Virginia Beach is considered part of the Hampton Roads metro area, which includes other coastal cities such as Newport News, Norfolk, Hampton, and Chesapeake. The nation’s capital is three and a half hours away by car, making it a popular weekend destination for travelers based in Washington DC.

    Virginia Beach Top Attractions

When you’re so close to the ocean, it’s hard to think of anything else but to lie on the beach all day. Luckily, this isn’t your typical beach town: you’ll find charming natural parks, military sites, shopping districts, and other attractions that make for a fun alternative when you’re deciding what to do in Virginia Beach.

Although downtown is technically the center of the city, the heart of Virginia Beach is without a doubt its center. Boardwalk. Also known as “The Strip”, this 3-mile oceanfront promenade offers refreshing walks on the sea, and every summer it’s filled with street vendors, live music performances, and a great selection of bars to sip a beer or cocktail while taking in the views. surf. While exploring, don’t forget to stop by King Neptune: the 12-ton bronze statue guarding the entrance to the beach is one of the city’s most photographed spots.

Half an hour south of Virginia Beach, you’ll find one of its main attractions, the Air Force Museum. Opened in 2008 by private collector Jerry Yagen, it now contains one of the world’s largest private collections of military fighters and jets from the 20s, 30s and 40s. Group tours of the museum are led by experienced pilots who have a unique understanding of what it takes to keep these vintage aircraft running.

It’s worth going out into the countryside to see the landing site of the first settlers of Jamestown. First Landing State Park, formerly Seashore State Park, is Virginia’s most visited state park. Perfect for a secluded stroll or invigorating outdoor adventure, the 2,888-acre park contains beautiful dunes, a sea forest with Spanish moss, and 19 miles of hiking trails. The Cape Henry Lighthouse is also home to the first federally funded monument commissioned by George Washington in 1792 year.

    Best Beaches Virginia Beach

Just 15 miles south of the oceanfront, Sandbridge is where locals go to the beach for a relaxed and serene day. The coastline is immaculate, there are no distracting hotels or shops, and there are no lifeguards – so it looks untouched and more rugged. Within 100 meters from the beach, there are a number of attractive houses and apartments for rent with breathtaking ocean views, allowing travelers to skip the hotel and pretend they have stayed on a deserted island for a week.

If you’re adventurous, the beach is adjacent to the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, which offers a stunning network of swamps, trails, and open waters perfect for kayaking and paddle boarding.

While Sandbridge and Chick’s Beach provide a more secluded and purposeful beach experience, there’s nothing like Oceanfront here. Connected by a boardwalk and dotted with ice cream stands and laid-back seafood grills, the main beach strip can also be explored. on a bike.

Major Events and Festivals in Virginia Beach

About the annual Neptune Festival in September, and for good reason: the event will take over the entire Oceanfront boardwalk with market stalls and live music performances. In fact, when the festival is in full swing, different artists show up on almost every corner. While the long-awaited International Sand Sculpture Championship is one of the headliners, the weekend also includes sporting events (golf, tennis, cross-country racing and surfing), plus 300 arts and crafts exhibitors, food trucks, a parade and three stages of entertainment. Book your hotel in advance as the Neptune Festival draws a lot of people.

The East Coast Championship of Surfing is held in Virginia Beach every August and in its 55-year history has become a must-see event for professionals and amateurs alike. But even if you don’t necessarily surf, the weekend-long festival has a broader appeal, with beauty contests, volleyball tournaments and live music.

    Shopping in Virginia Beach

If you’re looking to get up close and personal with Virginia Beach’s craft culture (and also find some worthy souvenirs), the VIBE Creative District is your one-stop-shop. The tiny neighborhood is exclusively owned by small businesses and has been recently managed with the addition of charming murals and public art installations. Start with North End Bag Co. , a bustling studio that makes beautiful waxed canvas bags and duffel bags, all hand-sewn in-house.

Meanwhile, at the consignment store 17th Street Market, the shelves are filled with whimsical paintings, nautical-themed décor and locally made jewelry. Through an exclusive partnership, French Twist Boutique offers a carefully selected line of women’s clothing from all French designers.

    Virginia Beach’s Best Restaurants

Seafood is the obvious staple for most coastal towns, but in Virginia Beach it’s a way of life. Home of the state’s eight major oyster regions, Virginia Beach has access to some of the freshest oysters on the East Coast and also supplies an abundance of bluefin tuna, sea bass, mackerel, mahi-mahi and more from the neighboring Chesapeake Bay. In short, with places to eat like the famous Catch 31 and the classic Waterman’s Surfside Grille, this is heaven for seafood lovers.

History of the Cavalier Hotel – USA Hotels

The Cavalier remains the most popular among Virginia Beach tourists. Founded in
1927, it attracts many guests and celebrities, including Dwight
Eisenhower, Richard Nixon and other 5 US Presidents. During the Second
World War II the hotel served as a naval training center, and Carlos
Wilson, Director of Services, who worked
in the hotel since 1938, caught a joyful event, the end of World War II
    Wars.

After Hotel Princess Ann burned down
in 1907, there were no luxury hotels left on the coast of Virginia Beach, so in
1924 about 100 famous Norfolk residents gathered to discuss fundraising
for the construction of a luxury hotel complex.

    After it was accepted
the final decision on the construction of the hotel and the money raised, in February 1925
Southern Virginia chief hires Virginia Beach Resort and hotel group
    Hotel Corporation (Resort
and Hotel Corporation). On the other hand, Hockenbury
System Incorporation, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, is committed to
management of the sale of shares, which began on March 23, 1925 years old. Was sold
about 14,000 shares, and for every two preferred shares acquired
the buyer received one ordinary share free of charge. The same was released
the number of preferred and common shares. The remaining 50% of the total shares were
transferred to the company that signed the contract for the management of the hotel, American
    Wanted Corporation.

    Ultimately collected
about $1.5 million to build a hotel and about $500,000
dollars for furnishings. After that, a search was made for a construction company, and
April 1925 Norfolk Neff & Thompson was elected chief
architect, and the George B. Post & Sun Company of New York as
    architecture consultant.

    In a year, when for
construction, everything necessary was organized, the problem of the name remained
hotel, for the solution of which was carried out
competition in the local newspaper. The newspaper received many letters, but by the end of the competition
the list of names narrowed down to Algonquin, Linkorn, Crystal, Sea Pine, Cavalier . 5
March 1926 the hotel received its official name Cavalier
which was included in the Charter Cavalier
    Hotel
    Corporation .

    May 9, 1926 was founded
the first stone, and Norfolk Mayor Tyler
made a solemn speech. It took 13 months of continuous work to
build hotel Cavalier , up to 225 were involved
people, but throughout the entire period of work there was not a single unfortunate
case. The building was constructed from steel coated with cement, making the hotel
refractory even before the term was coined.

    Workers pawned over
half a million bricks for the foundation of the hotel, this number of bricks has not yet been
used in no construction in Virginia. On the south side of Cavalera
a beautiful garden was planted, whose flowers adorned not only the dining room and
hotel lobby, but also each room individually. To date, there are
only the steps of the garden, which was located on the south side of the hotel.

    Formerly owned by the hotel
    there were 60 acres
land, known as “Hollis”, occupied by the construction of the hotel.
Today the hotel is Cavalier owns only 18 acres, since different
the owners sold off the assets for years.

    April 4-9, 1927
the opening ceremony of the hotel, bringing back the high style of hotels in Virginia Beach.
When Cavalier opened, at that time it was
was the finest hotel on the West Coast.
Shortly thereafter, however, several similar hotels opened,
some even outsized the Cavalier . For today
day Cavalier is one of the few
historical hotels that are still operating as hotels.

In the same period he made his
the first run from Cleveland to Norfolk by a train named Cavalier and whose
the slogan was: “From Cavalier to Cavalier “.
Most Midwesterners visited Virginia Beach in June when
intercity bus Norfolk-Western Pullman began to make non-stop
flight from Chicago to private station Cavalier . During the late 1940s, Pullman
stopped rail service. Shortly thereafter, the railroad tracks were
moved, and Pacific Avenue was drawn, during the construction of which Cavalier
lost one of the three clay tennis courts.

    Early 1930s staff Cavalier
numbered 435 people, and the hotel could accommodate 367 guests, while even with
At full capacity the hotel had more employees than vacationers. No hotel
couldn’t afford to maintain this level of workers towards guests.
At 1935 year Cavalier was called the largest
industry in Virginia Beach. The hotel hired more people and paid more taxes
    than any other company.

    During the late 20s, 30s,
40s and 50s Cavalier was the biggest employer
musical groups in the world. Saturday tea and dance evenings at Cavalier
    Beach Club .
Every week different bands showed up at the hotel and played Beach
    Club that helped spread
the fame of the hotel. Here are some groups: Benny
    Goodman, Glen Miller, Frank Sinatra
    Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Carmen
Cavallaro, Buddy Rogers, Ras Morgan, Ben Burney.

    Cavalier was
designed to please the wealthy aristocracy of the 1920s. The guests sat on
long verandas or spacious lawns, drinking tea and cinnamon toast next to
swimming pool (with salt water until the mid-70s, then the water was replaced with fresh water).
The same limousines that picked up guests from ships and railway stations
were also used in the evenings to take guests to play light gambling
games and drinks at nearby clubs such as Links, Dunes, Gables.

No one was admitted to the hotel in
as a guest without prior reservation. Hotel Cavalier
offered all possible amenities for guests – hairdresser and salon services
beauty, pharmacy and gift shop, photography services, ice cream parlour,
medical services, stock telegraph brokerage directly from
New York Stock Exchange. At that time there was a canteen located in
side, exclusively for personal chauffeurs who drive Rolls Royces.

    During the 30s Cavalier was
known to the public as “Virginia Coast Aristocrat” serving
aristocrats from all over the country. Presidents, famous actors and actresses, politicians,
athletes, businessmen, bankers, presidents of railway companies came
in Cavalier . Seven have stayed here.
US Presidents (Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower,
John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon), also three presidents came
and made a speech, but did not stay overnight as guests .

When the hotel opened, the number
the fund was 195 rooms. All workers, except for office workers,
were African American. Most African American workers were settled in
territory Cavalier . One African American
gentleman who worked as a crier in a hotel for 52 years, told (at the time
he was already 85 years old) that he was paid $5 a week when he started
work in Cavalier . He was given accommodation
(something like a hostel), a uniform, health insurance, one lunch per day and $ 5
plus tips. He wanted to keep working, but his wife asked for more time.
spend with her, so he retired. In addition to this employee,
today the Director of Services, Carlos Wilson, works for Hotel Cavalier almost
    60 years.

When Cavalier opened in April 1927,
each bathroom had four handles – Cold water, Hot water, Bath/Shower and
Salty water. At that time, many people thought that sea water was healthy, and the hotel
guests could take a salt water bath at any time. And also in each
the hotel bathroom was a reservoir of cold water and ice (ice water spicket). Refrigerators as we are
understand today, at that time did not yet exist. The only known then
cooling method – ice cubes. Under 19For 92 years there was not a single hotel in the world,
which would offer an in-room reservoir of cold water and ice. On the roof
hotel has a large wooden cistern filled with ice cubes and
cold water, which were supplied from there to all rooms.

    Not to mention the restaurant
    hotel Cavalier . Dinner at
The Pocahontas Dining Room was a very formal event. If the guest tried
to enter the hall in inappropriate clothes, he was asked to leave. The women came to
evening dresses, and men in tuxedos. The waiters are young African American
men dressed in striped trousers, tailcoats and white gloves.

One of the most desirable and
visited rooms – Hunting Hall. Today the Hunting Hall has several
titles. Once it was a private men’s club of wealthy hunters, riders,
fishermen. If guests come to the hotel with dogs, then Cavalier has
all conditions to take care of them. Or if the guests don’t want to worry and
bring your dog, Cavalier can offer hotel dogs.
The guests can bring the game they got on the hunt, give it to the kitchen and
it will be prepared for the guest. The hotel is currently considering opening a Comedy Club at the Hunt Hall.

Gradually Cavalier expanded its range of services, so in 1929
Memorial Day Cavalier opened Cavalier golf
and yacht clubs, as well as Cavalier Beach club under
music by the McFarland brothers, saxophonists of the Fred Waring Orchestra. Dance floor, open
for the evening sun shining into Cavalier Beach Club
dancing time on Sundays during the whole season delighted guests
hotel and local club members. At 1933
Possibly the worst hurricane in Virginia Beach history caused major damage to Cavalier
    Beach Club ,
    so it was later rebuilt.

    Cavalier Beach Club was
the harbinger of all beach clubs, and none of them could ever surpass him
Or at least go along with it.

Immediately after Cavalier Beach Club it was decided to build golf courses.
Negotiations and the search for suitable places lasted for a very long time. In April 1925
Richard Crane Westover gave the hotel 90 acres of land in the area
Berdneck under golf lawns. The land was cleared and redeveloped into a lawn
for 18 holes; however, the lawn would not be ready until 1929. A little later Cape
Henry Syndicate donated 200 acres to a hotel in
addition to the first strip of land. Golf Cavalier
    stretched for 6060 yards
with some holes modeled after famous North Berwick and St. Andrews in Scotland and a golf club at
Fox Chapel in Chicago. Early 1926 Council
entered into a three-year contract for the use of the courts of the Princess Ann Country Club (6206 yards) by hotel guests.

Hotel during the Second World War

    October 3, 1942 hotel
taken over by the US Navy and used as the School of Radar
until the end of World War II. After the school ceased its
existence, the US government reluctantly handed over several million dollars
to the hotel Cavalier continued its work in
as a hotel. The fleet left the territory on June 1, 1945. From 1945 to 1946
the fleet rented 130 hotel rooms to accommodate officers. When will the fleet
completely vacated the building Cavalier , the hotel needed a serious
    repair and restoration. Almost all
the original furniture was destroyed or removed when the building was under
    fleet control.

    The school was almost full
immediately after opening. One of the guests of that time reported that they lived on 6
person in room for 1942 years when he studied at this school. Another
the guest said that on the ceiling and windows in
black curtains hung in the pool, there was no water and the bottom of the pool was used as
class for 24 hours a day.

    December 31, 1959 Mr. Jen
Dixon and his partners purchased Cavalier . August 28, 1961 Mr. Dixon
became the sole owner of the hotel, which continues to belong to his family and
    now.

    In 1973 a new
building Cavalier on the ocean, and
    original Cavalier
closed. In 1974, an auction was held that sold everything that was in
hotel. And in 1976, Mr. Jan Dixon Jr. decided to reopen the old Cavalier .

    Major renovations today
take place in the guest rooms in the northwest wing of the hotel. All internal
walls, pipes, etc. moved to the outer walls of the building, and the space
redone in the style of the 20s, but with the conveniences of the 90s – illuminated mirrors, hair dryers,
two sinks, a jacuzzi, etc. In some rooms, a jacuzzi for 2
person, in other rooms bathrooms. By the end of 1992 all Northwest Wing
    fully completed.

    Stories thanks to
    which the hotel
    Cavalier also purchased its
    fame.

    • The hotel housed the WSEA radio station, which was the third radio station in the United States and connected the two coasts. radio station
WSEA has always started airing with
      songs “Carry
me back to Old Virginia. In 1927 a group of businessmen in St. Louis
raised $25,000 as a cash reward for the first person,
who will fly alone on an airplane from the USA to Europe. At that time one of the young
pilots delivered mail between St. Louis and Chicago by air. May 1927
Charles Lindbergh flew from New York to Paris, of course he became overnight
a hero in both the US and Europe. The pilot was not allowed to return to the US the same
thus, US President Collidge sent a warship after him. At that
as the ship entered Chesapeake Bay, passing by the old Cape Lighthouse
Henry June 10, 1927, Mayor of Norfolk S. Hatt Tyler of Cavalier first
from the Americans said congratulations on WSEA radio “Great job!”.
    • In addition, Cavalier gained fame thanks to this
stories. July 1, 1953 just 3 months after Henk Ketcham, his
wife Ellis and his world famous son Dennis were vacationing at the Cavalier became
private club. Hank Ketcham subsequently drew a series of cartoons
“Terrible Dennis”, based on his family’s stay at the hotel.
    • However, the best known
history associated with President Nixon. President Nixon several times
      stayed at hotel Cavalier
      and
his favorite room was the Hunter’s Hall. One day, despite the hot weather, he
insisted that the fire be kindled. The story concerns the Watergate scandal and is connected
with the missing tape for 18 minutes, which recorded the dialogue in the Oval
office between President Nixon and Halderman. It is believed that if the film
found, the impeachment process could begin. Ultimately, the film never
was found, but the president had to resign, but Nixon was not
impeached. In this regard, there is a rumor that President Nixon burned the tape
      in the fireplace Cavalier.

Looking for the best places to eat in Virginia Beach?

When you think of funky gourmet cities in the United States, places like Austin, New Orleans and Portland come to mind. I never expected Virginia Beach to ignite my palate the way it did.

While Dave and I dined and dined at the new restaurant or stylish beer pub every night, we were blown away by all the selection and delicious dishes waiting to be tasted.

So we’ve rounded up the best places to eat and drink in Virginia Beach.

    Deb enjoys oysters for breakfast

Where to eat and drink in Virginia Beach

The Matador Network sent us on a mission to eat as much as possible in Virginia Beach, and we gladly accepted the challenge by loosening our belts and tightening best elastic pants.

Over a five-day period, we visited all the cafes, distilleries, coffee houses and bistros we could.

Through our research and plenty of food, we’ve rounded up our favorite places to eat and drink on Virginia Beach.

    Virginia Beach Fine Dining

We Loved Eating at Virginia Beach

    1. Terrapin

Our Virginia Beach adventure started with a right foot in Terrapin.

Located just a few blocks from our hotel, the Hilton Garden Inn, we reached Terrapin at 6:30 pm.

We expected it to be quiet with such an early lunch time, but this place was jumping.

The tables were filled with people ordering fresh seafood and drinking signature cocktails.

    Fresh Terrapin Oysters

This award-winning restaurant is run by chef Rodney Einhorn, who honed his craft in New York and Aspen before returning to Virginia Beach to open Terrapin in 2006.

I believe this is the restaurant that started the Virginia Beach food movement and many of its employees have opened their own restaurants throughout the city.

    Terrapina Seafood

Speaking of Virginia Beach tourism, they say it’s a tight-knit community that understands that working together can only raise the bar and bring more people to the area for fine dining.

    Delicious Scallops

We had a huge tasting menu starting with the region’s world famous oysters, delivered by fresh captain Chris Ludford.

The meal continued with the seafood theme as Dave enjoyed the succulent scallops and I enjoyed the sea bass with clams.

Terrapin: 3102 Holly Rd. Virginia Beach, VA 757-321-6688

    2. Esoteric

We worked up an appetite that day adventuring around Virginia Beach, so when we arrived at Esoterica and ordered the biggest sausage board we’ve ever -or tried, we knew that we were waiting for a treat.

I think we could eat it alone and be delighted with the food. But that was not all!

    Sausage Board

Esoteric Hotel is housed in a building from the 1920s. This is a new restaurant in Virginia Beach, in the ViBe Creative area.

He serves dozens of local beers in the most unique way I have ever seen. All faucets protrude from the wall.

I could have spent all night tasting but instead we enjoyed two local favorites to go with our meal.

    Mircrobreweries popping up everywhere

    Dave went for filet mignon.

He said he hadn’t had such a good share of meat in years. Today it was my turn for scallops.

The seafood in Virginia Beach is so fresh that you should try it every chance you get.

    Amazing Esoteric Beef

The chef sent us a fresh octopus to try – a homemade dish and it did not disappoint.

Like all the restaurants we’ve eaten in Virginia Beach, Esoteric uses local ingredients following a farm-to-table formula. It also has its own garden on site!

    3. Bay Local Eatry

when visiting the FIRST LANDING FAVITA local eatery Bay Local Eatery.

It doesn’t have a latte or cappuccino, but it offers one of the best cups of coffee you’ll ever have.

The portions are huge and the menu is unique, specializing in creating local dishes with local ingredients.

Like my eggs Benedict with fried oysters and smoked bacon drizzled with hollandaise sauce and fresh parmesan.

    Local bakeries

The atmosphere is relaxed and the service is great. With all that food in your belly, you’ll be ready to hit the nearby State Park.

Bay Local Diner: 2917 Shore Dr., 757-227-4389

    4. Commune

Everyone in Virginia Beach loves the Commune.

It seemed like all the locals asked us if we had already eaten there. The commune is a family-style communal dining area where you pull up a chair at the big table or at the bar and order fresh produce straight from the farm.

It claims to be famous because it is the first restaurant owned by a farmer.

    Breakfast commune

The food is hearty, the atmosphere is friendly. We loved the huge cappuccinos which went great with our breakfast sandwiches.

The owners run New Farm Land in the Pungo farming community and they welcome visitors.

    Commune: 501 Virginia Beach Boulevard

    5. Three coffee ships

    Tree Ships for Morning Coffee

Located in the heart of the ViBe creative district, Three Ships Coffee is very popular with locals and is a short drive from the beach.

This is an excellent alternative to Starbucks where you will make cappuccino with great care and friendly customer service.

    Funky Waibe County

This is a small place with an even smaller menu, but the atmosphere is trendy and you can take your coffee with you while shopping in the alley behind.

You can tell that the clientele and staff are artists at heart who take the time to create the perfect combination.

Three Ships Coffee 607 17th St

    6. Java Surf

Java Surf was a favorite not a complete breakfast.

But just down the road we found a great breakfast spot with hearty food and friendly service.

They also served lattes and cappuccinos.

If you’re looking for something a little more fulfilling than Three Ships, try Java Surf.

    7. Bee and Biscuits

Bee and Biscuits at the Aviation Museum

Pungo Farming Community is where the local Virginia Beach produce comes from.

It is worth going to the area to visit the Military Aviation Museum.

While you’re there, you should stay at the very nice The Bee & The Biscuit.

    Follow this sign

We stopped by before visiting the Military Aviation Museum. Be prepared to wait, this place attracts a huge crowd.

The outdoor waiting area is pleasant and its bar offers unique coffee drinks and morning cocktails.

    8. Chesapeake Bay Distillery

    Chesapeake Bay Vodka Sip

The Chesapeake Bay Distillery is located just a few buildings from the Commune and Esoterica.

Going in for a tasting is an experience. We tried their vodkas and cocktails that were to die for.

Try a cocktail at Chesapeake Bay

Their spiced vodka is amazing quality, but makes it the perfect base for a Bloody Mary. We also enjoyed the vodka martini, but my personal favorite was just the flavor.

Chesapeake Bay Distillery: 437 Virginia Beach Boulevard

Зеленая Вспышка Пивоварня”> 9. Green Flash Brewery

Green Flash Brewery is not only a tasting, but an event.

When we stopped, the kids were playing in the one-acre beer garden yard and the parents were drinking brews at the many tables and outdoor seating areas.

Book a flight to Green Flash Brewery

Inside is a huge tasting warehouse where you can choose from 30 beers on tap.

We had to drive so we couldn’t go crazy with a couple of pints so instead we booked a flight to try as many options as we could with small and safe tasters.

    Dave’s favorite was fat.

    Beer Flight

Green Flash Brewery is a well-known micro-brewery in San Diego with its first location outside of California at Virginia Beach.

Virginia’s central location on the east coast made it an ideal choice.

    Food Trucks in front of

While you’re there, you can grab a bite to eat at the food truck parked next to the beer garden.

You don’t even have to leave the licensed premises.

    10. Back Bay Brewing Company

Back Bay Brewing is another great place to try local beer flights.

Hanging from oversized picnic tables gives the gathering a friendly feel as you sip flights or pints of their Atlantic Avenue IPA or Beach Cruiser Pale Ale.

try a beer at the Back Bay Brewing Company

Our favorite part of beer tasting in Virginia Beach was interacting with the locals, everyone was friendly and welcoming, and when you add beer or spirits to your drink, it’s a lot of fun.

From Mexican Cerveza and IPAs to darker Imperial Hopfenweizen and stouts, there’s a beer to suit all tastes.

Unfortunately for us, it was closed when we arrived, but it looks like the coolest spot in town to enjoy a pint.

    12. Back Bay Gourmet

    route.

Located in a shopping center, we would drive straight through it. But Gourmet Back Bay surprised us as we walked through the door.

A delightful shop with gifts and crafts on display at the front door told us right away that great attention was paid to everything.

    Lunch at Back Bay Gourmet

We choose a table by the window and enjoy freshly baked sandwiches with homemade chips. It was huge and filled.

    13. Blue Pete

After a fun and easy paddle in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge with Surf & Adventure, we ended up at Blue Pete’s.

This diner is another local favourite, and by 5:30 pm the parking lot was full of cars. Located a bit off the beaten path, this is a good choice to end the tour like we did.

Try their signature calamari, lightly sprinkled with parmesan cheese and served with chilli sauce.

There’s nothing better than parmesan with a bite.

    Seafood at Blue Petes

Serving everything from crab, clams and oysters to seafood delicacies and coconut shrimp, you’ll get seafood at mealtime at Blue Petes Restaurant, located right on the canal.

    14. Bubba’s Seafood Restaurant

Seafood and patio at Bubbas Sea

Bubba’s Seafood is located on the Virginia Beach waterfront. Located on Chesapeake Bay Beach, Bubba’s is the first of the bay’s many seafood restaurants.

Specializing in seafood, this is the perfect place to soak up the sun after a day at the beach or at First Landing State Park. And don’t forget the beer!

A new craft beer scene has emerged in Virginia Beach over the past two years, and many local restaurants serve these great beers.

    Bubba’s Seafood Restaurant: 3323 Shore Dr., 757-481-3513

    15. Margie and Ray

    you just don’t understand anymore.

Dave and I used to love going to the local eateries, and you can still do it with this diner.

It doesn’t look like it has changed since it opened in 1964. It is known as one of the best seafood restaurants in Virginia Beach and has been featured by Coastal Living as Virginia’s favorite seafood dive.

Margie and Ray: 1240 Sandbridge Rd., 757-426-2397

    Leaping Lizard Cafe

Leaping Lizard Cafe was featured in Food Network Diners, Drive-In, and Dives try. This is an interesting little place located on busy Shore Drive where the chickens seem to roam freely.

We didn’t see them this time, but it definitely had that vibe in it.

From eateries, entrances and dives – jumping lizard

The food is exactly what you would expect from a dive show. It’s big, succulent and fat. But oh so delicious.

Like many Virginia Beach locations, Leaping Lizard uses local produce and fresh garden vegetables.

Virginia Beach will soon become one of the greatest foodie cities in America.

What impressed us about Virginia Beach is how much attention and care is given to conservation.

They are working to restore their oyster coral beds and oyster farming is booming as we learned on our oyster tour with Captain Chris Ludford.

METEONOVA – Virginia Beach Solar UV Index Hourly for Two Days – Solar UV Index Forecast

What is ultraviolet and how does it affect health?

Since the beginning of the 1970s, an increase in the incidence of skin cancer has been observed. This was due to the individual habits of people in relation to being in the sun. It was believed that sunbathing is undoubtedly pleasant and useful. However, this is not the case, and excessive sun exposure leads to skin damage and an increased risk of cancer.

All people on the planet are exposed to ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. Ultraviolet radiation (UV radiation or UV radiation) corresponds to the electromagnetic wave range with a wavelength of 100-400 nanometers and is divided into three classes:

    • A 315-400 nm
    • B 280-315 nm
    • C 100-280 nm

As rays travel through the earth’s atmosphere, all UV-C rays and 90% of Class-B rays are absorbed by ozone, water vapour, oxygen and carbon dioxide. Thus, UV radiation reaching the Earth’s surface is A-class waves with a small number of B-class waves.

The intensity of UV radiation near the earth’s surface is affected by the following factors:

    1. The height of the Sun. The higher the Sun is above the horizon, the stronger the level of UV radiation. Thus, the level of radiation fluctuates from day to night and from winter to summer. The highest levels are reached around noon during the summer months. So, 60% of the radiation comes between about 11 and 15 hours of the day local time.
    2. Latitude. The closer to the equator, the higher the level of UV radiation
    3. Cloud cover. The level of UV radiation is higher when the sky is clear, but even with some cloudiness, the radiation can be strong due to reflection from the clouds, thus creating scattered sources of radiation. Thin clouds can transmit up to 90% of UV rays.
    4. Altitude above sea level. At higher altitudes, the atmosphere is thinner and absorbs less UV radiation from the Sun. Every 1000 meters, the UV level increases by about 10%.
    5. Ozone. Ozone absorbs some of the UV radiation that would otherwise reach the Earth’s surface. The concentration of ozone in the atmosphere fluctuates both during the year and within one day.
    6. Ground reflection. UV radiation is reflected or scattered to varying degrees by different surfaces. For example, snow reflects up to 80%, dry sand about 15%, and sea foam up to 25%. People indoors receive 10-20% UV radiation compared to people outdoors. People in the shade receive approximately 50% of the exposure.

Small doses of ultraviolet radiation are beneficial to humans, especially in the production of vitamin D. UV rays are also used to treat certain diseases such as rickets, psoriasis and eczema. This requires medical supervision, and the benefit of treatment versus harm from UV rays is determined by the treating physician.

Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can cause acute and chronic damage to the skin, eyes, and immune system. Sunburn and tanning are the most well-known effects of skin damage from UV radiation. In the long term, this leads to cell destruction, fibrous tissue formation, vascular damage and premature skin aging. UV radiation can also lead to eye inflammation and photokeratitis.

Chronic diseases include two broad groups: skin cancer and cataracts. Between 2 and 3 million cases of skin cancer are recorded every year. Between 12 and 15 million go blind from cataracts. According to the WHO, up to 20% of cases are associated with excessive exposure to the sun, especially in India, Pakistan and other countries of the “cataract belt” located close to the equator.

Moreover, there are suggestions that UV radiation may increase the risk of developing infectious diseases and reduce the effect of vaccinations.

People’s habits of sun exposure as much as possible may be responsible for the rise in skin cancer cases in recent decades. An increase in the frequency of outdoor activities and the desire to sunbathe lead to an increase in the duration of exposure to UV rays. Unfortunately, many people still consider prolonged sunbathing to be normal, and a tanned look is regarded as a sign of activity and good health. This is especially dangerous for children, as their skin is more delicate and sensitive to lesions.

    What is the UV Index?

The Global Solar UV-Index (UVI, UV-index, UVI) is a simple measure of the level of ultraviolet radiation reaching the Earth’s surface, and at the same time an indicator of potential skin damage. It is intended to alert people to the need for protective measures when they are out in the sun. The UV index was developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in cooperation with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the International Commission for Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, and the Federal Radiation Protection Service of Germany.

The UV Index describes the level of solar ultraviolet radiation reaching the Earth’s surface. The higher the index value, the greater the potential risk of damage to the skin and eyes, and the less time it takes for this to happen.

The marked increase in skin cancer cases worldwide among fair-skinned people is clearly related to increased exposure to the sun or use of tanning beds. Recent studies show that people’s habits of being in the sun for a long time lead to an increase in the number of UV radiation injuries. UVR warns people of the risks of prolonged UV exposure and recommends the use of protective equipment when necessary.

    Basic sun protection

    • Avoid sun exposure between 12:00 and 14:00
    • Look for shady places
    • Wear closed clothing
    • Wear a wide-brimmed hat that covers your eyes, face, and neck from the sun.
    • Wear sunglasses that cover your eyes completely
    • Use sun screens and awnings
    • Avoid tanning beds

Protect children and teenagers from the sun – this is very important!

The UV index ranges from 0 to 13, with higher values indicating higher exposure. Even for very sensitive skin with UVR values less than 3, the risk of short-term and long-term damage is minimal, and no protection is required under normal conditions. Above level 3, protection is required and must be further enhanced for levels 8 and above.

The index value can be either measured by spectroradiometers or calculated using mathematical models. To forecast the UV Index for Virginia Beach, we use our own calculation algorithm based on the use of data from global weather models.
