Thomas Downey High School (TDHS) is a high school in Modesto, California. It is one of seven secondary schools in Modesto. The Thomas Downey School is the second oldest high school in the city of Modesto, the doors of which opened to students in the fall of 1951. The Department of Agriculture at Thomas Downey was first established to handle the school’s early gardens. The gardens have since been cut down and the pulpit has become the main welding site for TDHS students. Students with good welding skills participate in competitions at the National FFA organization. If students win competitions, they have a chance to be recognized by leaders in the welding industry. Companies include West-Mark, Caterpillar and others. Students also breed animals for the Stanislaus County Fair, hoping to make a profit. Projects are 3 to 7 months long and focus on gardening, animals and home improvement. Students also have the opportunity to attend flower design classes in which students design and sell arrangements.
The school has designated dressing days for the fall and winter homecoming weeks, unity weeks and red ribbon weeks. At the beginning of each year, there is usually a big rally for the fall homecoming, where dance performances are held and homecoming candidates play games that should be somewhat awkward, but all good fun for the Homecoming Week spirit.

In 2008, the Thomas Downey University Boys Basketball Team became the 2008 MMC (Modesto Metro Conference) Champions by defeating Modesto High and had a domestic league record of 13–2.
On Saturday, February 23, 2008, the Downey Science Bowl Blue Team won the Central Valley Regional Science Competition. They beat the other 23 teams from the zone.
The Downey High Boys football team won the MMC (Modesto Metro Conference) in 2008, 2010 and 2011, and in 2007 played in the final section.
The Downey High baseball team won the MMC for the first time in 2011 with a 13-2 league record and a 20-7-1 overall record. Blake Smith (Class of 2006) currently plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers as an outfielder for the Double A Chattanooga Lookouts.
Smith was selected in the second round by the Dodgers in the 2009 MLB Draftyears from the University of California at Berkeley.
In 2012, Thomas Downey’s high football team won the Modesto Metro Conference for the first time in school history with a 6-0-0 record. Overall, the team finished 10-2-0, with a 45-42 win over State Champions Central Catholic and the school’s first playoff win in 25 years, a 41-6 win over Jesse Bethel High of Vallejo, California.
In 2013 Thomas Downey’s football team tied for the Modesto Metro Conference title with Modesto (High School). In general, the team finished the match 7-4-0. For the second straight MMC Titile Downey was led by 15 players from all leagues. Forwards: QB PJ Wilson, RB Mario Sanchez, wide receivers WIde Tristan Best, Josh Lowe and Mike Falepuno, offensive linemen Kyler Burke, Michael Dean Barron and OL Josh Roy. Defense: DB Jadon Webb, ILB Josh Baldonado, OLB Sanjay Parmer, OLB Joseph Camp, DL Ty Nelson, Danny Kota and Panther Thomas Reynolds.
In 2014 the Thomas Downey High Football team won the Modesto Metro Conference for the third consecutive year. Overall, the team finished 10-2-0, defeating Antelope High School in the first round of the playoffs, 20-19. In addition, Downey’s High Cornerback Jacob Magana was named by MaxPreps as the top defenseman of the Saka Joaquin Section. He finished the season with 14 steals, which also placed him second in the nation in that category. And Downey’s tall quarterback, P.J. Wilson, was named Sectional’s first defensive end Saka Joaquin and finished the season with over 29 assists00 yards and almost 600 yards. The Downey High JV and Downey High Freshmen finished the seasons 10-0-0 unbeaten. Overall, Downey’s football program (Varsity, JV and Frosh) ended 30-2-0.
Singing
Downey is also known for its strong tradition in choir singing. Downey has five choirs: the Concert Choir (Mixed Ensemble), Madrigals (Advanced Mixed Ensemble), Knightengales (Advanced Women’s Ensemble), Knights (Men’s Ensemble), and Gloriana (Emerging Women’s Ensemble).
The choirs usually perform three concerts a year: “Knight Magic” in the fall, a gala concert in the winter, and a spring concert in the spring. They also perform in various venues throughout the year and especially during the holiday season. The choirs also go on an annual choir tour to Southern California in the spring.
Band
For years, Downey High had one of the most prominent band programs in the far western United States. It all started under band director and composer Roger Nixon, who later moved to Modesto College and then to San Francisco State University. He composed the music for Modesto’s bicentennial in 1970, which was performed by the MJC Concert Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Jensen. Ken Farrell built on this foundation a truly excellent band program. K 19In ’74, Downey’s band achieved twenty consecutive team appearances (above first place) at various concert band festivals in California. The concert band recorded the record every spring for many years.
Mr. Farrell wrote the school anthem and fight song, and arranged and composed music for concert and marching bands. The marching band and pep band were also very good, and Mr. Farrell created a unique tradition of appointing directors of student pep bands to rehearse the band and buy music to perform, starting with Dave (Fowler) Johnson at 1969 year.
A full orchestra performed at every home football game, and each game played a separate show during halftime, consisting of several songs with a different arrangement for each song. Mr. Ferrell’s bands expected and achieved perfection. Daily group training for several hours began in the fall 6 weeks before the start of school. Each year, so many Downey band students qualified for the California State Honorary Band that a quota of eleven members was established. The instrumentalists were critical of the success of the annual musical performances and the school orchestra. Several professional and semi-professional musicians have graduated from this program, including Gary Coates, Ken Nelson, Tony Clemens, Doug Ruby, Joyce Maley, Scott Ferrell, and Dave (Fowler) Johnson, who have attended since the mid-1960s to early 1970s.
Dave (Fowler) Johnson and Wade Munsey are also piano technicians. In 2008, the Downey Concert and the Marching Band performed at the Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
