From the “Red Machine” through the “kindergarten” to the Russian tricolor

In the 1991/92 season, the hockey world saw three of our teams: the USSR, the CIS (“Joint Team”) and Russia. At the Canada Cup, a farewell to the Red Machine of the Soviet assembly took place. She updated the composition like never before and was content with fifth place among six participants. The coaching staff of Viktor Tikhonov, to which Vladimir Yurzinov returned after a four-year break, considered the overseas super tournament as a dress rehearsal for the Olympics. Therefore, only three were called from the NHL: to the defense – Alexei Kasatonov and Alexei Gusarov, and to the attack – Sergei Fedorov, who through the Soviet media apologized to the fans for escaping to Detroit from the Goodwill Games in July 1990th.

Despite the failure, spiced with a 3-3 draw with the Maple Leaves (and could have been a victory, count referee Paul Stewart for our cleanest goal), the tournament in Canada was useful – it was possible to test nine future Olympians in a serious case. It was at the Canada Cup that Dynamo Moscow goalkeeper Mikhail Shtalenkov won coaching confidence, becoming the first number of the national team, although at the club he was considered an understudy for Andrei Trefilov, who, on the contrary, was a substitute in the national team.

At the Albertville Olympics, Viktor Tikhonov’s united team, staffed mainly by Muscovites, was called a “kindergarten”, and its victory was all the more unexpected. Which, apparently, accelerated the premiere of the Russian team. This premiere took place in the spring of 1992 at the World Championships in Bratislava and Prague. Football players, back in the summer at Euro-92 in Sweden, performed under the guise of the “CIS team”.

For the first time, fans saw the Russian hockey team on April 12, Cosmonautics Day, at the Small Sports Arena in Luzhniki. A dozen Albertville heroes took to the ice in the first of two test matches against the Swedes (2:2), and the first goal in the history of the Russian national team was scored by Dmitry Yushkevich, who would later be named the best defender of the World Cup-93 in Munich. By the way, he was the only one among the Dynamo Moscow who left to conquer the NHL in English.

As part of Tre Krunur, with whom we did not have a chance to meet at the Olympics in France, young forwards Peter Forsberg, Markus Nilsson, Mikael Nylander, defender Fredrik Stillman and goalkeeper Peter Oslin attracted attention. The first of this list became a two-time Olympic champion, an NHL star, the second became the charismatic captain of the Vancouver Canucks, the techie Nylander managed to play SKA in the mid-2000s, the Lillehammer-9 olympian4 Stillman – to work as a coach in the KHL. Oslin, on the other hand, has been familiar to us since 1986, when he was unexpectedly entrusted with the Swedish goal in the decisive match of the World Cup in Moscow, which, however, did not lead to success: ours won – 3: 2 and regained the title lost a year earlier in Prague.

The 1992 World Cup went down in history not only because the Russian team was among its participants for the first time, but also because its awards were played in the playoffs, as in Albertville. Experienced forwards Vyacheslav Bykov and Andrey Khomutov, who brilliantly played the role of “kindergarten teachers” at the Olympics, could not play for our team.

– We are squeezed like lemons, – Bykov, the captain of the team at the World Cup-90 and OI-92, explained the withdrawal.

But Tikhonov needed experienced fighters, and the choice of head coach unexpectedly fell on another representative of the Swiss championship, defender-universal Ilya Byakin, Olympic champion Calgary-88. The story was quickly forgotten about how in 1991 the head coach of CSKA expelled Byakin on his birthday, forcing him to go to Rapperswil.

On April 28, it was in the match with Switzerland that the official baptism of fire of the Russian national team took place in Bratislava. The first pancake, in general, came out lumpy: after two periods, ours with 18 Olympians in the line-up were two goals behind, but the loud sensation was canceled by a double by Sergey Zubov, who equalized the score in the penultimate minute – 2:2.

The coaches appointed Vitaly Prokhorov from Spartak as the captain of the Russian national team, largely because he spoke English fluently. From across the ocean, freshly baked Olympic champion, defender Dmitry Mironov managed to arrive to help, who, together with Igor Kravchuk, continued his career in the NHL shortly after the victory in Albertville.

In the second match, ours with considerable difficulty broke the resistance of the Norwegian team. Even in the middle of the third period, we lost 1:2, but homebody defender Sergei Bautin equalized the score, and 76 seconds before the final siren, Spartak’s Igor Boldin brought victory, as in Albertville.

Matches from Bratislava, including the victorious (4:2) against the hosts of the championship, who last played the combined team of the Czech Republic and Slovakia, were not seen by Russian viewers. Broadcasts were only from Prague. And there ours defeated the French – 8:0, and then gave out a thriller with the Canadians: leading to the middle of the match 5:0, they allowed to reduce the gap to a minimum, but scored into an empty net (6:4).

The quarter-final brought together with the same Swedes who three weeks ago became accomplices of historical events in Luzhniki. Having conceded a puck in the first and second periods, our team failed to open the Tre Krunur gate – 0:2. And the Swedes with their bird trio Sundin – Forsberg – Garpenlev proceeded further up to the gold medals.

The loss was annoyed by the fact that, firstly, before that, the team had only lost with a dry score at the World Cup-55 (0:5 from Canada in Krefeld), and secondly, for the first time in official tournaments we were left without medals.

Quite logical organizational conclusions followed: the first team was headed by Boris Mikhailov, and Tikhonov was left at the helm of the Olympic team, which was to defend the title in Lillehammer-94.

And at World Cup 93 in Munich, the Russians ascended the throne largely thanks to the proven veterans Khomutov and Bykov. Trefilov, who came from across the ocean, defended the gate brilliantly. We have already talked about Yushkevich.

In the semi-finals, we won a strong-willed victory (7:4) over the Canadians with coach Mike Keenan, rising NHL star Eric Lindros and Canada Cup-91 MVP goaltender Bill Ranford. And in the decisive match, revenge for Prague-92 was taken from the Swedes – 3:1. The scoring was opened by debutant Valery Karpov, the golden goal scored 19-year-old Dynamo player Andrei Nikolishin, and Khomutov put an end to it.

Later, two of the Russian national team of the first convocation – forward Alexei Kovalev and defender Darius Kasparaitis – performed at the 2006 Olympics in Turin, where the first was the captain. There tournament fate again brought the Russians to the Swedes. A new round of rivalry with Forsberg did not work out, since the famous striker did not go on the ice due to illness. At the same time, a hockey player who still played against the USSR national team, Mats Sundin, remained in the Turin composition of Tre Kronur. We can say that he once personally put an end to the hegemony of the Red Machine, for the decisive goal in the final of World Cup 9He scored 1. Rushing across the entire area, Sundin sharply taxied to the center from the right flank, left Vyacheslav Fetisov out of work and threw Trefilov in opposition.

In Turin, ours once again got even with the Swedes, defeating them in the group – 5: 0, which, however, did not prevent Tre Krunur from becoming Olympic champions later.
