The history of the “New Greatness” case – TASS
August 6, 2020, 10:40
TASS-DOSIER. On August 6, 2020, the Lublin Court of Moscow found guilty seven defendants in the criminal case on extremism from the New Greatness youth community.
TASS tells about the history of this case.
According to the investigation, the New Greatness community appeared in December 2017. Its participants were young people who previously sympathized with the Artpodgotovka extremist movement (banned in Russia), which was planning a “revolution” on November 5, 2017. The participants of the “New Greatness” were residents of Moscow and the Moscow region, the leader was Ruslan Kostylenkov from the city of Khotkovo (Moscow Region), who led the so-called supreme council of the organization.
Participants were engaged in posting and handing out leaflets at opposition rallies, some of them practiced shooting from hunting weapons and throwing “Molotov cocktails”. Also, New Greatness had a Telegram group and a public page on VKontakte. The organization held meetings at McDonald’s locations.
Arrest
On March 15, 2018, 10 members of the New Greatness were detained in Moscow and the Moscow region: Sergey Gavrilov (25 years old at the time of arrest), Maria Dubovik (19 years old), Pyotr Karamzin (32 years old), Ruslan Kostylenkov (25 years old), Vyacheslav Kryukov (20 years old), Anna Pavlikova (17 years old), Dmitry Poletaev (29years old), Pavel Rebrovsky (31 years old), Maxim Roshchin (39 years old) and Rustam Rustamov (30 years old). Searches were carried out at their place of residence, and a hunting carbine “Saiga” was confiscated.
The media published a video of Kostylenkov’s interrogation during his arrest, where he said that the goal of “New Greatness” was “to establish order on the territory of the Russian Federation, to organize a tribunal over members of the ruling elite, to abolish the repressive laws in force and the Constitution. ” On March 16, the defendants in the case were charged under Parts 1 and 2 of Art. 282.1 of the Criminal Code (CC) of the Russian Federation (“Creation and participation in an extremist community” – provides for punishment from a fine to a prison term of up to 10 years). By decision of the Dorogomilovsky Court of Moscow, Dubovik, Karamzin, Kostylenkov, Kryukov, Pavlikova (despite their minority) and Poletaev were sent under arrest. Gavrilov, Roshchin, Rebrovsky, and a few days later Rustamov was placed under house arrest as a preventive measure.
The first publications about the criminal case appeared on the day of the arrest in the Internet publications OVD-Info and Mediazona. It received a wide response at the end of March, when Mediazona published a detailed article about New Greatness. It stated that the key witness for the prosecution, Alexander Konstantinov (or Ruslan D.), was a provocateur – an infiltrated intelligence officer who suggested to other defendants in the case the idea of creating an organization charter, finding a room for gatherings, and also buying office equipment.
In addition, in the spring-summer of 2018, some of those under arrest began to report poor conditions in the pre-trial detention center, as well as torture inflicted on them. The lawyers complained about procedural violations during the investigation. Pavlikova and Dubovik complained of deteriorating health.
On August 15, 2018, a “March of Mothers” was held in Moscow in support of Pavlikova and Dubovik (according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 200 people took part in it). The next day, Pavlikova and Dubovik were placed under house arrest by the decision of the Dorogomilovsky court.
On December 11, 2018, at a meeting of the Human Rights Council, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that members of the New Greatness were planning recruitment work in the North Caucasus, the Volga region and Crimea. According to him, the activists of the movement were looking for the possibility of acquiring body armor, gas masks, helmets, conducted training in combat training and the manufacture of incendiary mixtures. At the same time, the head of state promised to look into a number of circumstances related to the New Greatness case, including allegations of torture and provocation by the special services.
Separate lawsuits
Pavel Rebrovsky and Rustam Rustamov pleaded guilty and made a deal with the investigation. They were cleared of the charge of organizing an extremist community (part 1 of article 282.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), leaving only participation (part 2).
On March 6, 2019, the Sergiev Posad Court of the Moscow Region sentenced Rustamov to one and a half years of suspended liberty.
On April 29, 2019, the Lublinsky Court of Moscow sentenced Rebrovsky to two and a half years in a general regime colony with outpatient supervision by a psychiatrist. However, July 8, 2019of the year, during the meeting on the case of the other participants in the “New Greatness”, Rebrovsky refused to testify, saying that he had made them under pressure from the investigator, who threatened a stricter article 205 (“Terrorist act”), which provides for a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison. On October 8, 2019, the Moscow City Court overturned Rebrovsky’s sentence and sent the case back for a new trial. Rebrovsky himself was released on bail.
Main case
The case of the main defendants (Gavrilov, Dubovik, Karamzin, Kostylenkov, Kryukov, Pavlikova, Poletaev and Roshchin) has been considered by the Lublin Court of Moscow since May 27, 2019of the year.
The defendants pleaded not guilty, claiming that the idea of creating an extremist organization was suggested to them by infiltrated provocateurs.
A number of incidents occurred in the course of the case. In particular, on October 17, 2019, after being denied release from custody, Kostylenkov and Kryukov inflicted wounds on themselves (they were quickly provided with medical assistance, nothing threatened their lives). On October 24, 2019, it became known that Gavrilov escaped from house arrest and asked for asylum in Ukraine. He was arrested in absentia and put on the international wanted list.
On July 14, 2020, the state prosecution asked the court to impose real and suspended sentences for seven defendants in the New Greatness case – from four years of probation to seven and a half years in prison.

Engineer – a profession between megalomania and the hope of humanity
Engineers and workers proudly pose in front of a turbine destined for the German Laufwasserkraftwerk Ryburg-Schwörstadt hydroelectric power plant, Escher Wyss & Cie plant, Zurich, ca. 1930 ETH-Bibliothek Zürich, Bildarchiv
An engineer is more than a profession. It is also the hope that one day all the world’s problems can be solved technically. On the way from the heroes of Jules Verne to Elon Musk: how has our understanding of the profession of an engineer and his position in society changed?
This content was published on August 28, 2022 – 07:00
I meet literary critic Robert Leucht in a cafe near Zurich Main Station. The powerful building of the Swiss Higher Technical School (ETHZ), a masterpiece of the great Gottfried Semper, since the nineteenth century has been regularly graduating engineers, both men and, more recently, women, literally reigns over the city.
Engineers provide us with bridges, tunnels, elevators, rails and cables, other mechanisms and various smart solutions to our everyday problems and problems. Engineering has long been associated not only with technical achievements, but also with all sorts of legends and myths. It is about them that the new monograph by Professor Robert Leucht of the University of Lausanne is discussed. On a long journey from Prometheus and the heroes of Jules Verne to Elon Musk: how has our understanding of the profession of an engineer and his position in society changed?
SWI swissinfo.ch: Engineer is a very broad concept. In your book, you talk about, for example, bioengineering, social engineering, and so on. What do you think is the essence of this profession?
Robert Leucht: Engineers are technical experts responsible for solving not only technological but also organizational problems. They create infrastructure systems – bridges, tunnels, rail networks, and, of course, smaller things and objects. At the same time, they are not artisan locksmiths who simply put something together from existing parts. Their role is especially important at the preparatory stage: they plan, develop, experiment.

When did this figure first appear in history?
Of course, already in antiquity there were craftsmen who were engaged in works that can now be called engineering – for example, they designed fortresses or ships. But only in the second half of the nineteenth century did educational institutions and specialized associations appear that give the engineer a clear professional image and formulate his social role. At the same time, a corresponding image appears in literature and culture – for example, in the novels of Jules Verne. It is there that at some point a character appears, always male, with all sorts of ideas.
He gathers and organizes around him people who embody for him these ideas, large or small. In German-language literature, the first hero-engineer appears in 1902 in the novel of the famous Austro-Jewish writer and political figure Theodor Herzl (Theodor Herzl, 1860 – 1904) “Renewed Earth” (Altneuland), and this image which undoubtedly arose under the influence of the images of Jules Verne . But this figure has, of course, earlier prototypes. The engineer in literature echoes ancient images, such as the image of Prometheus. In a certain sense, Robinson Crusoe can also be called an engineer (even before the word itself appeared), who is building a new civilization from scratch on a desert island.
Did you emphasize that this character was “always male”?
I don’t know a single female figure of an engineer in the books of the nineteenth century, and there are almost none in the twentieth. Except that in fiction the GDR is a lonely spot on the general map of literary history. This is still a strongly pronounced male image – and not only in literature: back in 2020, the ETHZ Swiss Technical School advertised engineering education in a video in which only male characters participated.
What type of masculinity is attributed to an engineer?
Here masculinity means rationality, ingenuity and, at the same time, fearlessness. He is a competent adventurer, a tech-savvy adventurer.

Adventurer?
For example, in the novels of the interwar period, an engineer does not sit at a table with papers at all, but goes into the wilds to discover, study and conquer the unknown. An engineer of that era has rough, aggressive, predatory features: he masters a new living space (the motto of that time!), But always with certain costs.
Elon Musk talks at the 67th International Astronautical Congress about the flight to Mars and Martian cities. Susana Gonzalez/Bloomberg via Getty Images
In the nationalistic (so-called Völkisch) fantasy of Germany, engineers are developing virgin soil somewhere in the deserts of Australia: they build cities, introduce high technologies – and at the same time they either expel the local population or force them to work for themselves. Science fiction takes stories like this to other planets and distant galaxies. After the Second World War, the image of the engineer as a destroyer took root more and more. From a character carrying enlightenment, he turns into an aggressive figure.
Why?
Of course, the image of a beautiful, flawless, problem-solving engineer in science fiction literature has not gone anywhere. However, in the era of catastrophes, and especially during and after the Second World War, technological progress also showed its ugly side. After 1945, the belief that technological development also brought with it social progress waned sharply. This is connected not only with the flawlessly designed mechanism of mass destruction of people under the Nazi regime, but also with the advent of the atomic bomb.
This shift is particularly evident in the career of the German engineer Wernher von Braun. After the war, NASA invites this positive technical genius to work for them, but only later does the public learn that, it turns out, he was just as willing to work for the Nazi dictatorship.
The Swiss writer Max Frisch in the late 1950s novel Homo Faber depicts an engineer as a womanizer who, without knowing it, falls in love with his own daughter, and in the end everything ends in disaster.
This novel captures the peculiarities of the post-war period: it is no coincidence that the plot begins with an aircraft accident. The hero sits in the desert near a malfunctioning plane, he is overcome by doubts, an identity crisis occurs, he cools down to his profession. In this novel, another image of the engineer emerges: a boring bureaucrat who is always measuring something, who sits in the office from nine to five.
Counterculture 19The 1960s fundamentally casts doubt on the figure of an engineer, whether he is a great man or an insignificant one, it does not matter. On the one hand, she does not recognize the results of technological achievements as a source of the Good, on the other hand, she rejects the boredom of tedious office work.
The dullness of this image is criticized even now. The tech heroes of our time present themselves as underachievers who have had a hard time with formal training and standard professional careers. The anti-academic image, the myth of the great inventions made in the garage, constantly appears in the biographies of these people, and the key point of such texts is always not only their ability to think theoretically, but also to be a practical person.
External content
When you watch Apple commercials, it seems that the creators of these commercials have put together all this countercultural criticism, but only in order to create a new technological myth.
Exactly. I would say that Apple takes this criticism and rethinks it: technology here is still a source of the promise of progress, but it does not have to be gray and totalitarian, it can be colorful and individual. Steve Jobs was also inspired by the countercultural paradigm. Apple products were designed primarily to make our daily lives easier, but at the same time, they also carried a clear poetic beginning: they are aesthetic, it is pleasant to look at, they capture not only the functional, but also the intuitive, emotional. This rethinking of technology has proved to be very successful, although not indisputable from an ideological point of view.
Can such people even be called engineers?
Engineering is a flexible concept. In our time, there is genetic engineering, vaccine engineering, geoengineering… For me, these are all signs that the story of a man who brings hope to the world continues today. People believe that genetic information or climate can be changed through creativity and R&D. The image of Steve Jobs, no doubt, is an example of this. In his idea that the world can be improved with technology, the engineering myth lives on.
Is it still possible to find classical engineers today?
Most of all, the Engineer with a capital letter, as we remember him from the interwar era, reminds me of Elon Musk. Here are two examples for you. His Hyperloop project, which promises that in Europe and the US it will soon be possible to move from point A to point B at almost the speed of sound, is reminiscent of the dreams that mankind had back in 1900. Then, after the sinking of the Titanic, Bernhard Kellermann described a direct and safe route under the Atlantic in his novel Der Tunnel.
Musk plays with such fantasies, he fuels our rapture with the idea that nothing is impossible in this world. The dream of exploring new worlds also plays a role here: he dreams of how one day man will become an interplanetary species. It is in Elon Musk that we again observe echoes of the interwar era, we see an emphatically courageous image of a conqueror and world changer who is not afraid of absolutely anything.

“The greatness of a particular scientist depends on how much he slowed down the development of science”
Doctor of Medical Sciences, Head. laboratory of hereditary metabolic diseases MGNTs
The text was created as part of the “Head of the Labs” project: the editors of PCR.news ask questions to the heads of laboratories, departments and scientific groups. What would you do if you were omnipotent? What would an ideal world look like in 50 years? What does not give you rest? What is the main rule you can teach beginning researchers? And so on.
MD, head laboratory of hereditary metabolic diseases MGNTs
Excitement is every incomprehensible case when it is difficult to make a diagnosis. We’re more into diagnostics than research, but diagnostics is also a very interesting field and the excitement comes in waves. If we manage to bring the study to completion, and still find a treatment option for the patient, then that’s just great. Although it happens the other way around – sometimes the hands just drop and it becomes inexpressibly sad that they did not have time to help the child, or the family is unable to accept it. Despite the fact that the diagnosis was carried out quickly and efficiently, and the diagnosis was correct.
Quite recently there was a case when we confirmed the biochemical diagnosis of our patient by molecular genetic method after 10 long years. The gene responsible for the development of this disease was studied by us “along and across”, while not a single pathogenic mutation could be identified. But there was one synonymous replacement, which almost no one paid attention to, since this is an extremely rare variant and, moreover, not included in any of the world’s known polymorphism databases. As a result, it turned out that this replacement leads to disruption of the splicing site, and this conclusion was reached by our young colleague, a graduate student, who, using the Minigen system, proved the pathogenicity of this variant in his work.
We already know a lot today : detect enzymes, various metabolites, study DNA at all levels – from simple targeted sequencing techniques to panels and whole-exome sequencing, and now we want to get closer to correcting detected disorders, to develop new approaches to treatment. I even had an idea by analogy with the international project “Human Genome”. The whole world worked on it, the chromosomes were divided between countries, and this greatly accelerated the whole process. So it is with hereditary diseases. Today, about 8,000 of them are known. And we need to make a similar international project, distribute these diseases among states, and give each one the task of developing a treatment for one group of diseases. Because at present there is such a picture that there are “fashionable” diseases that scientists from several countries are working on at once, while other diseases are waiting in the wings. And if we divide diseases evenly between countries, then the efficiency of work, in my opinion, will increase very noticeably. Breakthroughs can be expected from such global international projects.
Science cannot be done within the framework of one country, one laboratory, one person . Only the interaction of professionals, and specialists from different fields, can significantly bring progress in any kind of research.
I am inspired by the genomic editing programs that are now so widely used. And one more thing – the use of various computer programs for the selection of drugs for the treatment of a particular disease, when the corresponding structural model is first created on the computer, the properties of the substance are carefully checked, and then it is synthesized. Such an example in the field of NBO treatment is the use of biochemical chaperones, which stand guard, preventing the enzyme from being destroyed before it enters exactly the compartment of the cell where it is able to perform its function.
My dream is to expand the walls of our laboratory so that all my employees work comfortably and comfortably. But most of all I would like to see young people who are passionate about science in my laboratory. Because it is from them that the energy and excitement that we are talking about comes. And I like one statement that “the greatness of a particular scientist depends on how much he slowed down the development of science,” that is, how long the followers use the dogma he expressed. Therefore, I would like to see more young people in science, so that they move it faster, doubting and destroying old dogmas.
I am connected with diagnostics, for me the main rule is the eternal Hippocratic “Do no harm”.
The possibilities of diagnosis and the possibilities of treatment are now unusually wide, but there is a certain imbalance between these areas: we can diagnose what we are not yet able to cure. And young researchers have a great risk of being so carried away by new technologies that they can easily forget about the person for whom this was all started. Therefore, we must always remember for whom we work and do everything to ensure that our work, our research, brings only benefit to the patient.
