What is desktop? The desktop is the main Windows user workspace that appears on the screen immediately after the computer boots up. The desktop usually contains system icons and the Taskbar, which, in turn, houses the Start button, which opens access to the Main Menu, the keyboard layout panel, and the Notification Area. In addition, at Desktop can store icons and shortcuts for various programs or documents.
The taskbar is a horizontal bar located at the bottom of the desktop that contains the Start button, Keyboard Layout Panel, and Notification Area. When you select the Minimize command or when you click on the corresponding button in the application header, the working window of the program is minimized to a button on the Taskbar.
The main menu gives the user access to all programs installed on the computer, documents stored on disks, as well as to the operating system settings.
To open the Main Menu, click the Start button on the Taskbar.
Keyboard layout panel (language bar) is designed to switch text input modes from the computer keyboard: one of the modes involves entering English (Latin) characters, the other – Russian (Cyrillic).
The notification area is located on the right side of the taskbar. It displays the system clock, as well as icons for some currently running programs. If you hold the mouse cursor over the system clock for a few seconds, the computer will display the current date in a pop-up window.
The Quick Launch bar is displayed in the taskbar by default. It may contain shortcuts to some installed programs, as well as system commands, such as the “minimize all windows” command. Clicking on a shortcut launches the corresponding application.
Typically, the desktop displays the following system icons, the functions of which can be accessed by double-clicking.
My Computer – Allows you to access drives, folders, and some peripherals on this computer.
Network Neighborhood – provides access to local network resources (if the computer is connected to it). My Documents – opens access to the My Documents folder, intended for storing user files.
Internet Explorer – opens the Microsoft Internet Explorer program for browsing the Internet
Recycle Bin – icon on the desktop work with computer files.

This design guide was created for Windows 7 and has not been updated for newer versions of Windows.
Most of the recommendations still apply in principle, but the presentation and examples do not reflect our current design guidelines.
The Windows 7 desktop is the user’s workspace for their programs. This is not a way to raise awareness of your program or its brand. Don’t abuse it!
The desktop is an area on the screen provided by Microsoft Windows, similar to the physical desktop. It consists of a workspace and a taskbar. A workspace can span multiple monitors.

The active monitor is the monitor on which the active program is running. The default monitor is a menu monitor with a taskbar and a notification area.
The Windows desktop has the following program access points:
- Workspace. An area on the screen where users can do their work and store programs, documents, and shortcuts. While the desktop technically includes a taskbar, in most contexts it only refers to the workspace.
- Start button. Hotspot for all programs and special Windows places (documents, pictures, music, games, computers, control panel), with “recently used” lists for quick access to recently used programs and documents.
- Quick start. Removed from Windows 7. Hotspot for user-selected programs.
- Task. Access point for launching programs that have a presence on the desktop. While the taskbar technically spans the entire panel from the Start button to the notification area, in most contexts the taskbar refers to the area in between that contains the taskbar buttons. This area is sometimes called the task area.
- Table strips. Not recommended. Minimized functional, lengthy programs such as the language bar. Programs that are minimized to workbars do not display taskbar buttons when minimized.
- Notification area. Short term notification and status source and access point for system and program related functions that do not have a presence on the desktop.
Windows desktop access points include the Start button, taskbar, and notification area. Notice the taskbar button thumbnail feature.
The Windows desktop is a restricted share that is the user entry point for Windows. Leave users in control. You must use its scopes as intended – any other use must be considered abuse. Never see them as ways to raise awareness of your program or its brand.
For Windows 7, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and independent hardware vendors (IHVs) can use the device phase to develop a custom branded user interface for the computer and devices without cluttering users’ desktops. OEMs, in particular, can use the device stage computer to manage user programs, service offerings, and support. For more information, see the Microsoft Device Experience Kit.
If you only do one thing…
- Don’t abuse the desktop, keep control of the users. If your target users are likely to use your program frequently, provide an option during installation to put a shortcut on the desktop with no default selection.

If users are likely to use your program frequently, provide an option to place a shortcut to the program on the desktop during installation. Most programs will not be used often enough to warrant offering this option.

The option is not selected by default. The requirement to select an option is important because once unwanted icons are on the desktop, many users are reluctant to remove them. This can lead to unnecessary clutter on your desktop.

If the user selects this option, specify only one program shortcut. If the product consists of multiple programs, provide a shortcut to the main program only.
