Work at Deloitte: placement, tests, interview

Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Ltd (Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited, DTTL, Deloitte, DTTL) is an audit firm that occupies a leading position in the “big four” of the world’s largest audit firms.
This is the largest network in terms of the number of employees – about 290 thousand in the world. Of these, 7 thousand in Russia and the CIS were at the end of 2020.

As of April 2022, Deloitte no longer operates under its own name in Russia and Belarus. According to our data, the staff was retained with minor cuts and relocations. Business activity is preserved, but completely withdrawn from the head structure of Deloitte. Under what name of the company the former employees of this company will work in Russia and Belarus is still unknown. Therefore, unfortunately, many of the data from our article, which was written at the end of 2020, are no longer relevant. We will follow the news in this area and update the article.

The company has a wide network of representative offices in the CIS. Deloitte branches are located in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ufa, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and Vladivostok (Russia), Kiev (Ukraine), Minsk (Belarus), Tbilisi (Georgia), Baku (Azerbaijan), Aktau, Alma-Ata, Astana, Atyrau (Kazakhstan), Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), Tashkent (Uzbekistan) and Dushanbe (Tajikistan).

Deloitte’s largest Russian clients are Rosbank, Zenit Bank, AFK Sistema, MMC Norilsk Nickel, Aeroflot, MTS and others.

    Benefits of working for Deloitte

Deloitte is a company with a highly developed corporate culture and human resources management system.

Among the advantages of working in this company, Deloitte employees themselves name:

    • clear career prospects
    • huge valuable work experience
    • high demand in the labor market
    • good team
    • corporate training and internships
    • the prestige of working in a company with that name
    • corporate clubs, sports sections, circles

Career opportunities at Deloitte are proven by numerous examples. Most of Deloitte’s top executives, including its CEO Puneet Rengen, come from the bottom of the company. Moreover, most of the company’s managers receive their post before the age of 30, and the status of a partner is often up to 35 years.

    Disadvantages of working at Deloitte

A characteristic feature of all large consulting and auditing companies is called a huge amount of work. The norm in these companies is the daily work of 10-12 hours. Overtime is not paid, but, on the contrary, without them it is impossible for Deloitte to comply with accepted standards and receive decent pay. Mistakes are followed by harsh criticism and deductions from salaries.

Deloitte employees report that it is difficult for them to balance their personal life and work. Deloitte is more suitable for young people who are ready to look at the monitor from dawn to dusk every day, giving up everything else. Overwork and nervous tension from responsibility often lead to exhaustion and disease. In Big 4 companies, there are frequent cases of problems with pressure, heart, eyes, nervous system in people under 30 years old. Deloitte employees often don’t have time for the gym, friends, dates and family, they only have work to do. It should be noted that the company is also trying to organize recreation for employees – the company has sports sections, clubs, and lounges in offices. Quite often, outdoor parties and holidays are held.

We list the main problems in Deloitte regarding work:

  • low starting salary
  • severe criticism for errors
  • system of fines for employees
  • overloaded offices (large open space, small closets, noisy, 1 toilet for 50-60 employees)
  • Vacation available only in summer (busy season from October to May)

Pros and cons: conclusions

The main value of the Deloitte experience is that after it it will be easy for you to get a job and work in any other large foreign or Russian company of any profile. For example, if you conducted an audit or consulting for the metallurgical sector, it is likely that you will be hired there immediately for a good position. That is, as an intermediate career stage, Deloitte is one of the best options. Note that the company knows and uses such a strategy. New employees are in for a very difficult first 2-3 years – a lot of work and training is hung on them.

However, according to employees, if a valuable specialist leaves Deloitte, the company helps him get a job in a new promising place – he gives good recommendations and advice on how to get hired. Consulting companies are always insured, they know that you can be a big shot, and it’s better to be friends with you.

And this is not just a salary, it is a percentage of the company’s profits. The average income of a partner is about 1 million euros per year, depending on the performance of his department.

How to get a job at Deloitte

Here are the words from the interview of Vedomosti newspaper with the CEO of Deloitte Global Punita Renjen in 2015: “This year, 60,000 specialists will be hired by our firm. We have 3.5 million resumes to consider, but we will only hire 2% of all applicants.”

Concerning the qualifications of an applicant, Puneet Renjen remarked: “Broadly speaking, two aspects must be looked at. The first aspect is applied: your achievements in your studies, as well as everything that you have achieved, doing beyond the required program. The second aspect is personal: integrity of character, the ability to work in a team and manage it, as well as contribute to the common cause. I think a combination of both is needed.”

According to HR Deloitte employees, applicants are required to:

  • highly motivated to work
  • determination
  • leadership qualities
  • advanced communication skills
  • professional knowledge
  • liability
  • ability to work both in a team and independently

Selection stages at Deloitte

  2. Testing in the office of the company
  3. Initial interview
  4. Final Interview

Applying

All vacancies of the company are posted both on major HR portals and on our own website. We recommend using the official website of the company, as this increases the chances that your profile will be noticed. First you need to register on the official Deloitte website. Create a personal account and enter data for yourself: education, work experience, personal and contact information.

At this point:

  1. make sure you qualify for the job you want to apply for. If the discrepancy with the requirements is large, you should not even try – the questionnaire will not pass;
  2. fill in all the required form fields – this is required;
  3. Attach a resume and a cover letter with full information about you – university, work experience, professional qualities, projects in which you participated at the university or at your place of work, achievements in sports, participation in charitable and social projects;
  4. check your resume and cover letter for literacy – mistakes are punishable by sending the questionnaire to the trash.

Much attention is paid to the university, if you are a graduate or still a student, and previous work experience, if you are a specialist. Graduates of top Moscow economic universities are given significant priority. It is important for graduates of other universities to show experience in working on cases, participation in target communities or circles.

Testing at Deloitte

Deloitte collaborates with SHL on tests. For each department Deloitte uses its own test, consisting of questions to test professional knowledge (accounting, finance, taxes), the level of knowledge of the English language, psychological, numerical, verbal and logical tests.

Important : Some departments use testing entirely in English. That is, all tests will not be in Russian, but in English. For example, this practice is used in the Deloitte office in Kyiv. For Kyiv, and other offices, knowledge of the English level is not lower than Upper-Intermediate according to TOEFL. Questions in English are also taken from TOEFL questionnaires. It also happens that the initial interview in the Kiev office is also conducted in English, but most often in Russian.
(On our website, all tests are in Russian, but if you were told that the tests will be in English, let us know and we will help).

Testing is carried out in the office on company computers, usually with a group of applicants.

The Deloitte Audit Department conducts the following tests – 2-hour test on a computer with 6 sections:

  1. questionnaire about work preferences (for example, “In my workplace, everything is neatly placed, stacked, and not lying in a mess” answer options: “true”, “not true”, “difficult to answer”)
  2. logical abstract thinking ability tests (logical)
  3. psychological test
  4. accounting test (according to PBU, postings, IFRS in English, audit, taxes)
  5. English test
  6. numerical + verbal test

Deloitte Operational & Strategic Consulting uses tests:

  1. numeric test
  2. logical abstract thinking ability tests (logical)
  3. verbal analysis
  4. accounting test (PBU, general concepts, postings, general audit)
  5. English test
  6. essay about yourself and your goals for working at Deloitte in English (Motivation letter)

Testing in Deloitte Tax Department includes 2 stages, which are held on different days. To get to the second stage, you must first pass the first:
Stage 1: numerical + verbal + logical test and English language test
Stage 2: professional and psychological tests

Deloitte tax department professional test includes:

  1. taxation closed test 20 questions (corporate taxes)
  2. open-ended questions of the following nature: the main difficulties in calculating the payment of taxes on export, describe the types of tax audits and their differences, the amount of fines for non-payment of taxes; who pays property tax, who does not; VAT deduction items; what taxes does UTII replace, etc.
  3. Short essay (given 30 minutes): for example, “Company tax mistakes, how to avoid them”, “What is your dream?” – can be both in English and in Russian

The Deloitte Test for Logical, Verbal and Numerical Ability serves as a test of your ability to quickly and correctly read and understand texts, graphs and tables. According to staff, Deloitte tests are not difficult if you prepare for them.

SHL Numeric Tests for Deloitte

SHL numeric tests always contain graphs, tables and charts. You don’t need to solve complex calculations – only four basic operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, as well as the definition of fractions and percentages. We recommend repeating the principles of finding shares and percentages – if you have not solved mathematical problems for a long time, this can cause difficulties.

These tests almost always include currency conversion tasks – pay special attention to this when preparing. 60-9 is given to solve one task0 seconds, usually in a numerical test 15-20 tasks. In SHL tests, it is allowed to switch from one question to another and back. Therefore, if a question is too difficult and it is not clear how to solve it, leave it and solve others, and return to it later if there is time.

SHL verbal tests for Deloitte

Many job seekers find Deloitte verbal tests difficult. Indeed, if you have not solved such tests before, it will be difficult for you to answer correctly in the set 60 seconds.
Recall that in Kyiv these tests will be in English.

Deloitte uses two types of verbal tests:

1. true-false-can’t tell verbal tests
2. verbal information analysis tests

Below you can see examples of both of these types of verbal tests from SHL.

Deloitte English Proficiency Test

As we mentioned above, the Deloitte test is based on the Upper-Intermediate TOEFL tests. Usually there are 100 questions in the test, but the questions themselves, according to Deloitte employees, are not difficult. Usually they will include the following tasks:

  • insert an article or a missing word in a sentence
  • fix a mistake in sentence
  • choose a word similar in meaning
  • link a word and its description

The average passing score on the Deloitte English Proficiency Test is 75% correct. Note that most applicants score higher. A good score on this test counts towards your overall score on all tests.

The definition of test criteria and passing score is usually announced before the start of the test. It might sound like this: a passing score on the logic test, numerical and verbal tests – 60%, on the professional test – 70% and on the English language test – 75%. If your results turned out to be 55%, 75% and 85%, then the HR department of Deloitte usually meets halfway and with such a result for the rest of the tests, it counts you 55% for numerical tests as a passing one.

If the result of the applicant is 59%, 70% and 74%, then even such a small amount may not be enough to go to the next stage. Therefore, we recommend that you carefully prepare for testing so that your result is 80-90% in all tests and you, as a candidate for a Deloitte vacancy, are out of competition.

The result of passing the test in some departments is reported immediately, and in some it is necessary to wait from 2 to 7 days until HR specialists finish analyzing the data of all applicants.

Tests cut off up to 80% of unprepared applicants. Those applicants who have passed the test are invited to the first interview.

Initial interview

In Deloitte regional offices in recent years, this stage is omitted – after the tests you are immediately invited to an interview with the head of the department in which you want to get a job. But in Moscow, Kyiv and other capitals, the interview takes place in two stages:

  1. interview only with a Deloitte HR representative
  2. interview with 2-3 managers and head of department

The first interview will discuss your test scores and then the details of your resume. Questions might sound like this:

  • What are your most significant accomplishments?
  • What were your favorite and least favorite subjects at the university and why?
  • Have you taken part in educational programs, grants, exchanges?
  • Do you belong to any public organizations?
  • Besides Deloitte, have you tried or are you currently trying to work for other Big 4 companies?
  • If you receive invitations from all companies, which one will you choose and why?
  • What draws you to Deloitte?
  • What do you know about Deloitte and working at Deloitte?
  • How can you contribute to Deloitte?

As you can see, most of the questions are about your personality and motivation. It is also very important to Deloitte that you can demonstrate teamwork skills and a focus on results.
If you can show it, you will receive an invitation to the final interview.

Final interview

Deloitte’s second or final interview is an interview with the head of the department. This will be a more complex and lengthy conversation, which lasts an average of 1-2 hours.
The questions are partly replicated from the first Deloitte interview, partly a test of your professional knowledge. You may be asked several questions about accounting, taxes, auditing, knowledge of the current economic situation in the country and the world.

Tips from HRLider:

  • make sure you stay up to date with the latest news that matters to the audit and consulting industry;
  • prepare to tell about yourself and what is important for you in your future work at Deloitte, list what you would like to work on;
  • think about the main reasons why you want to work at Deloitte and in the direction you have chosen.

In the end, you will be told about the system of work in the company and how it will look like working in that specific position where you get a job.

During the interview, you can and should ask questions, as this is your chance to find out if working at Deloitte suits your goals. We recommend that you read our article “8 Smart Questions for an Employer”

In Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kyiv and Astana in recent years, Deloitte has introduced a new practice – business games (cases) and a cocktail party. According to the feedback of employees and applicants in the regions, this is not the case.
If after the final interview you were invited to another stage, it means that there are still doubts about you and your future potential leader wants to see how you will show yourself in real work on the project – in this case, a training case. The case, most likely, will not be for accounting or taxes, but for teamwork.

It looks like this:
The group of applicants is divided into 2 teams and given the same case for the audit of the enterprise. Next, the members of each team will have to explain the decision to the head and managers of Deloitte, who will ask many clarifying questions.

After the case is defended, the cocktail party itself follows – informal communication with all participants and representatives of Deloitte and refreshments from the company. Everyone who participated in such a party notes that the atmosphere is very friendly. Managers of the company make contact with each candidate and allow them to ask them about any details you are interested in. Remember: in such an informal setting, work is also underway – they look at you and right at that moment a decision is made whether you will take a vacancy at Deloitte.

Advice: try to show yourself as an adequate interesting person and communicate with managers and directors, they decide whether or not to hire you. If you remember, in a day you will receive a call from HR and a job offer.

Remember: thorough preparation is the key to success. It is better to spend a day or two preparing for tests and an interview at Deloitte now than to regret the missed opportunity for a long time later. Start preparing right now!

The Czech economy is facing a recession this year, caused by the energy crisis and inflation. Gross domestic product will fall by 1.1%, according to a study by the consulting company Deloitte.

Real wages will fall again this year, but unemployment in the Czech Republic should remain at its current level. The economic downturn also threatens to keep the state budget deficit projected at 295 billion crowns. At the same time, Deloitte notes that the economy has already deviated from a sustainable course.

“The main reason for the decline will be the ongoing decline in household consumption and the impact of high inflation on the decline in real incomes of the population. It is also expected that gross capital formation will decline by 3.1%. Due to rising costs and declining profitability, companies have to reduce investments, and projects in progress will be postponed to the future, ”said David Marek, chief economist at Deloitte.

According to the study, the weakening economy should not significantly affect the labor market. Unemployment will stagnate, but the number of vacancies will decrease. The risk of such a development of events lies in the continuation of the energy crisis. If energy prices forced many companies out of business, unemployment would rise. However, Deloitte points out that in the long term the Czech economy will face the opposite problem, with the population withdrawing from the labor market and companies not having enough employees.

According to the study, the long-term tense situation in the labor market will lead to an increase in nominal average wages by 4.3% despite the recession. However, due to continued high inflation, real wages should fall in the same way as last year: the decline in 2023 will be 3.7% after last year’s 8.2%.

In terms of inflation, Deloitte expects it to gradually decrease, with an average inflation rate of 8.5% for the whole year. “Raising inflation expectations remains the biggest risk. If it remains too high, the CNB will have to respond with a tighter monetary policy,” Marek said. According to the study, price growth should reach an equilibrium level of 2% no earlier than next year.

According to the study, the recession also threatens the result of this year’s state budget. Deloitte warns that collection of emergency taxes in energy, banking and petrochemicals is likely to be lower than expected by the cabinet. In addition, according to the study, tax collection will worsen due to new tax measures, such as doubling the limit for non-payers of value added tax, the use of a single tax rate with a limit of up to 2 million kroons, and the abolition of electronic sales accounting.
