Going back to work after having a baby is hard. The team at Doodle Bugs made my transition back into the workplace comfortable, and not so scary! I love that I can log into the mobile app whenever I find myself missing my little one (which is a lot!) and get instant gratification as soon as I see her playing with her teachers and classmates on my phone. All of the teachers and staff members that I’ve interacted with are incredibly approachable and genuinely care about my child, as well as all the other children in the center.

It’s also nice to be greeted by name whenever coming or going!

Preschool

We offer full day infant/toddler care, full day preschool, part-day preschool, before/after school, and summer camp programs. Programming is child-directed, Reggio inspired, and hands-on. Social and emotional development and creativity are fundamental components of our emergent curriculum approach.

The compassionate care that Heritage Christian Services has been known for is extended through the agency’s Expressive Beginnings Child Care, with three locations in Greece, Henrietta and Webster. While the child care centers are not specifically designed for children with disabilities, it accommodates as many special needs families as possible and is backed by HCS’ longstanding expertise in that area. Expressive Beginnings offers a unique family environment and a highly regarded learning curriculum. All three locations serve children through age 12. We offer infant and toddler care, preschool, pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, school age wrap around care and summer camps. At Expressive Beginnings, we believe that social and emotional development are the foundation for success, and that relationships matter. That’s why we offer both primary care and continuity of care for our infant and toddler classes, the age groups where forming secure attachments is key. Primary care is when one teacher is assigned to be the primary caregiver for a group of children. For example, in a classroom of eight children, four will be in one teacher’s primary care group. This helps children develop secure relationships with caregivers. It also helps teachers to really get to know each child and his or her parents. Continuity of care means children have the same caregiver from infancy through age 3, which helps children develop secure attachments. Our goal is to provide the same caregiver to all siblings from the same family whenever possible. We also hold play-based learning at the heart of our daily rhythms. We respect and acknowledge that when children are playing, they are learning. We know that children express themselves and their intelligence in many different “languages”; music, movement, writing, art, and sports to name a few, so we provide ample opportunity for them to experience, and express, them all. EBCC is proud to follow an emergent curriculum, which includes major facets of Reggio Emilia, an emergent learning style of international acclaim. In other words, learning topics are child directed and require teachers to exercise flexibility and creativity to follow the interests of their students rather than rigid lesson plans. We find that when children are exploring a topic that they are interested in, their engagement and learning increases dramatically. And no matter the topic or activity, the teachers still accomplish age-appropriate objectives in language, literacy, mathematics, science and social studies. The health and well-being of the children entrusted to our care is of paramount importance to us, which is why Expressive Beginnings staff members are taught by a registered nurse and certified through Medication Administration Training to give medication. They may also give emergency inhalers for asthma and epinephrine pens for severe allergies.

Neighborhoods of New York: Exploring Yorkville – BARNES New York

Interview by Rachel Brunet, Director and Editor-in-Chief, Petit Journal New York

York, where you can regularly discover the various areas of the city through the eyes of the French-speaking people who have settled there. They tell us all about their area in their own words, their tastes and habits. Today we explore Yorkville, an area in the Upper East Side. nine0004 Helen Drummond , former doctor, now writer, from Mons, Belgium. She has just released her first novel, La place est priz. She lives in Yorkville with her husband, who works in finance, and two children. She tells us about Yorkville.

Lepetitjournal.com New York: You live in Yorkville, on the Upper East Side. What attracted you to this area?

Helen Drummond : When we moved from Belgium, we came to this area without even knowing it, thanks to the children’s school. To be located in the correct geographic area for the New School of Manhattan, PS 290, we were supposed to live next door. Before moving, we asked about different schools and visited several apartments depending on the geographic location of these schools. We were immediately attracted by PS 290.

Can you tell us about life in the area, about the atmosphere? What makes it alive, what drives it?

The atmosphere is very young and dynamic. I would say the children’s laughter, the scooters, the restaurant terraces, the 86th street shopping street, the cultural mix all bring the neighborhood to life. nine0007

You are a mother. How is life with children in Yorkville? Are there many families?

Yes, there are many families. It is a very well located area with excellent schools. The public elementary school PS 290 is fantastic, there are many very respected private schools in the immediate area. The Central Park is very close for walking and the beautiful Karl Schurze Park, which families love for its playground, shady corners and romantic atmosphere. There are countless sports clubs for martial arts, basketball, dance, football and the famous Asphalt Green sports center, which not only offers great sports programs for children of all skill levels, but also courses during the school holidays. nine0007

You are a writer. Can you describe this area to us in your own words?

I would say that Yorkville for me is a different face of the Upper East Side. It’s an area bordering the old Upper East Side, chic, sedate and conservative, either Madison Avenue or Park Avenue, while still retaining its own identity. As you cross the Upper East Side from Central Park, you will be amazed by the architecture of the streets, the sophistication of the shops, the attire of the people walking by. The more we go, the less we feel. A little more annoying snobbery. nine0007

Then we arrive at Lexington Avenue, we continue on our way, and everything changes. We discover Yorkville: young, warm, hospitable. The setting suddenly changes, remains chic but full of life, children, restaurants, terraces, noise, everything. It’s not the cacophony of midtown or the luxurious serenity of the Upper West Side: it’s a small town within a city that I believe has been able to recreate the best of New York life. Yorkville redefined the Upper East Side.

As a European, can you feel the European side of this area in its residents, shops, schools? nine0005

Not only European, but also international in a more general sense. Almost all nationalities are represented at PS290. It’s the same at my children’s sports club Asphalt Green. This cosmopolitan aspect is incredible.

What are your favorite places in York?

Restaurants: ToloAche, a Mexican restaurant on 82nd Street and Lexington Avenue; 83 1/2, Italian restaurant at 83rd Street and 1st Avenue; AOC East, a French bistro at 83rd Street and 1st Avenue; Boqueria, a tapas bar at 77th Street and 2nd Avenue; Donguri, a Japanese fine dining restaurant at 83rd Street and 2nd Avenue, Luke’s Lobster at 81st Street and 2nd Avenue is my favorite restaurant for kids). nine0007

Restaurant and Bar: Le Penrose, on 2nd Avenue, between 82nd and 83rd Streets. Great cocktails and great atmosphere.

Maison Kayser at 87th Street and 3rd Ave, for my almost daily hot chocolate.

Ottomanelli Brothers Store, 82nd Street and York Avenue. A butcher shop run by the Ottomanelli family for generations. Best steaks in town.

Takunya Nail Salon: Zen and Intimate, 100% Organic, 81st Street between 2nd and 3rd Ave. nine0007

Asphalt Green: A sports complex at 90th Street and York Avenue with a FIFA-certified soccer field and an Olympic swimming pool. My kids play at the Asphlat Green Soccer Club so they each go there at least 4-5 times a week for their training/matches. Yes, this is our second home…

Small AMC Orphéum on 3rd Avenue between 86th and 87th Streets.

Webster Library at 77th Street and 1st Ave.

Barnes & Noble and L’Occitane stores on 86th Street between 3rd Ave and Lexington Ave. nine0007

Randall’s Island and Esplanade along the East River for cycling.

Blooming trees in the streets in spring …

Would you recommend this area to anyone looking to buy or rent?

Absolutely. Especially families.

If you had to describe Yorkville in three words?

Family, dynamic and cosmopolitan.

Thank you, Helen Drummond
