It looks like Bernie SANDERS has a chance of beating Trump
On February 29, the fourth Democratic Party primaries will be held in South Carolina. Former Vice President Joe Biden will almost certainly win them ( has already won – L.Dz. ), but even this cannot undo the fact that the 78-year-old senator from the state has finally become the leader of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination Vermont Bernie Sanders. As early as March 3, according to the results of “Super Tuesday”, when the primaries will be held in 14 states, Sanders may be virtually out of reach for more moderate competitors. Meduza looks into what Sanders, who calls himself a “democratic socialist,” wants and whether he can defeat Donald Trump in the November 2020 election with his radical agenda.
Sanders won two straight primaries. Competitors say his success is beneficial to Russia
Not even formally a member of the Democratic Party, Bernie Sanders is not the first time he is fighting for her presidential nomination – American laws do not prohibit this. In the 2016 election, without large campaign contributions, he nearly won the Hillary Clinton primary. Party leaders then helped Clinton’s nomination. Like many Republicans who could not believe that Trump would win, they felt that the eccentric Sanders, who challenged American conventions, would not be able to win the sympathy of the general electorate. Clinton ended up losing to Trump.
Sanders’ undisputed leadership in the current campaign was talked about after he won the primaries twice in a row: in New Hampshire on February 11 and in Nevada on February 22, and especially confidently spoke during the Democratic debate on February 25, fending off attacks from competitors from all over the world. sides.
This was the last televised debate before Super Tuesday on March 3, when almost a third of the country, 14 states, including the largest Democratic one, California, will vote in the Democratic primary. So colleagues in the Democratic camp offered their main trump cards against Sanders. US Vice President Joe Biden, under President Obama, said that Sanders “had blood on his hands”: he had previously voted to exonerate arms manufacturers from liability for mass murders (Sanders now advocates a ban on the sale of automatic weapons to the public). Former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg mentioned that Sanders was called to the CIA the day before, where he was warned that in discussions about Sanders’ initiatives on the Internet, he was “played along” by aggressive, insulting opponents trolls, whose trail leads to Russia.
“Putin thinks Trump should be President of the United States — and so Russia is helping you win the [Democratic] nomination: so you lose to him,” Bloomberg said.
However, Sanders is already looking confident as the race favorite. He recalled to Biden that he also had a lot of “bad votes” on his account, and to Bloomberg that he once publicly admired the current Chinese President Xi Jinping.
If elected president, Sanders promises to remove business from politics, legalize marijuana and abolish the death penalty
If Sanders becomes president, people like Bloomberg with a net worth of almost $60 billion could be in trouble. “I don’t think billionaires should exist,” Sanders said in 2019. Its program includes free healthcare and education at colleges and many universities, forgiveness of tuition debts, mass construction of social housing, free kindergartens, a lot of taxes for corporations and individuals with an income of over 250 thousand dollars a year. There are also more exotic ideas: legislative caps on interest rates on loans, allowing all post offices to provide banking services, requiring providers to have cheap basic rates for broadband Internet access, and building public high-speed networks.
Sanders vows to “get big business money out of politics”, limit political donations from individuals to $500, ban the sale of military weapons to civilians, and transform the nation’s energy system to move away from fossil fuels to renewables. Sanders’ “Green Plan” implies that by 2035, electricity in the United States will become “virtually free” – you will have to pay only for the operating and maintenance costs of transmission networks. He proposes to ban the death penalty and private prisons, introduce the concept of paid leave for sickness or family reasons, including six months of maternity leave.
To top it off, Sanders promises to legalize marijuana at the federal level within the first hundred days of his presidency, overturn all convictions related to marijuana trafficking, and make sure that the areas most affected by previous policies receive their share of the legal traffic ” herbs.”
Sanders’ critics point out that his plans require huge funds. The public health program alone would cost nearly $30 trillion over 10 years, the green program $16. 3 trillion (Housing for All and College for All are significantly less than $2.5 trillion). and 2.2 trillion). For comparison, US GDP at current prices in 2019year amounted to 21.43 trillion dollars.
Sanders ignored questions about money for a long time – and for good reason. His main progressive Democratic rival, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, who also proposed the introduction of basic health care for all, spoke about how she plans to fund the project back in November. After that, the press popularly explained why Warren’s ideas were literally unrealizable – as a result, her popularity began to decline.
In the end, Sanders nevertheless presented a detailed financial justification for his grandiose ideas. The senator wants to force corporations to pay more taxes, impose additional taxes on the unsustainable oil and gas industry, and legislate to cut premiums to private insurance companies. The first reaction was that even the press loyal to the Democrats took this skeptically, noting that the figures for expenses and income replacing them seriously disagree in some places. But there are only a few days left until Super Tuesday, so the wave of analysis may simply not have time to cover the Sanders program
He names Sweden and Denmark as an example for the USA. Opponents believe that in fact he is a fan of Chavez, Castro and the USSR
Many years ago, Sanders proclaimed himself a “democratic socialist” (as opposed to socialists who operate in authoritarian countries). As an example of a social structure, he cites the Scandinavian countries – Denmark and Sweden.
However, according to critics, there is a significant difference between the economic model that has taken root in Northern Europe and that proposed by Sanders. The Scandinavian model is a full-fledged market economy, albeit with serious government regulation for the sake of social equality. Sanders, in the words of some commentators, offers something in return for the market. Critics say his proposals for health care reform amount to pushing the private sector out of health insurance. They say that Sanders wants to destroy competition – and the quality of services in this case will inevitably suffer.
The basis of the Swedish model was an agreement between the government and business associations to provide a certain level of wages – while the enterprises remained in the hands of the owners. Sanders, opponents believe, believes that the means of production should be owned by labor collectives. They cite as an example his initiative to give employees partial control over the companies in which they are employed, making them shareholders (partial co-owners) of the business.
Sanders is also suspected of being much more left-wing than he tries to appear. He is reminded that at 19In the 1980s, he openly sympathized with the Sandinistas, a Marxist-Leninist party in Nicaragua, which, for example, supported the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran and took US embassy staff hostage. Until recently, Sanders also supported the regime of Chavez and Maduro in Venezuela. Speaking about Fidel Castro, he admits that he was a dictator – but urges not to forget that under him a program of universal literacy was put into effect in Cuba. “Is this bad?” Sanders asks the audience (these words caused particular discontent in Florida, where many Cubans who fled the Castro regime live).
In 1988, as mayor of Burlington, Vermont, Sanders traveled to the USSR. In Yaroslavl, he was taken to the theater with very cheap tickets, in Moscow he took a ride on the metro and attended performances of dance groups. After the 10-day visit, Sanders held an hour-long press conference where he marveled at what he saw. During the current campaign, he was accused of not meeting with a single dissident and not asking anything about the Gulag.
In 2019, a video from that trip appeared on the Internet, where Sanders sits naked to the waist in a bathhouse – at a table abundantly laden with alcoholic drinks, and with a group of Americans, in response to Katyusha, sings This Land Is Your Land. In this country song 19In the 1940s, the lyrical hero laments the fact that America has ceased to live according to the principles bequeathed by the founding fathers.
“We’re not going to abandon capitalism,” Mike Bloomberg said during a February 25 debate to Sanders. — Other countries have tried. It was called communism and it didn’t work.”
Until recently, Sanders seemed to have no chance against Trump. But polls show that faith in him is growing. For example, analogues of the universal health care program are offered by several applicants at once. Against this background, Sanders stands out primarily because the solutions he proposes are the most radical
With these ideas, the senator is especially popular among Democrats under 45 and those who define themselves as “very liberal” (in American terminology, this word is closer to the European “left”). His weakness is that, unlike Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton, he does not have the support of the overwhelming majority of African Americans who make up an important part of the Democratic electorate. But it is popular with the natives of Latin America. The basis of his electorate are voters with the lowest income and those who do not have a diploma of higher education. All this easily explains Sanders’ unpopularity among party functionaries: most of them are richer and more educated than his average voter.
The popular forecasting website “Fivethirtyeight” estimated Sanders’ chances of winning the majority of the votes of the delegates of the democratic convention, that is, in fact, the party congress, which will be held in mid-June, at 32%. His closest pursuer Joe Biden has 16%, Michael Bloomberg has less than 1%. The most likely (52%) option is that none of the candidates will receive the majority of the delegates nominated at the end of the primaries. In this case, one or more rounds of voting will take place – as many as needed to determine the absolute winner. The so-called “superdelegates” – representatives of the leadership of the Democratic Party (approximately 3979 regular delegates and 771 super delegates). The final result in this case will be determined by a series of complex negotiations between politicians and party functionaries.
Whether Sanders can win in this case will largely depend on whether the rest of the Democrats believe that he can win against Donald Trump in the elections in November. Until now, many Democrats have considered the prospect of Sanders’s nomination a disaster that will lead their party not only to defeat in the struggle for the presidency, but also to the loss of Congress (elections there will be held simultaneously with the presidential elections). It seemed that because of Sanders’ radicalism, many hesitant would support Trump. However, as the success of the senator from Vermont in the primaries grows, his position is strengthened.
According to Vox, in the primaries, most Democrats are more likely to vote for the party representative who, in their eyes, will be able to defeat Trump. According to Reuters polls conducted from February 17 to 25, in the eyes of Democrats and voters without party affiliation, Sanders has the best chance of defeating Trump – 26% of those polled think so.
