History says that Westfield took its name from the rich “fields west of Elizabeth Town” and hence was called Westfield for more than a hundred years. Fields. City records say that “the settlement of Westfield dates back to the last year (1699) of the seventeenth century, resulting from the ‘Clinker Lot Division’.” Almost immediately after the separation, emigration from the older parts of the city of Elizabeth began to move into the hinterland, especially to the area lying between the River Rahway to the east and the mountains to the west. The Westfield Police Department (WPD) has been providing police protection to the city since 1903. The paint scheme for the older vehicles (Engine 4) is yellow, while the newer vehicles (Ladder 1, Engines 2, 3 and 5) are red hulls with white cockpits. Support vehicles, Ford Pick-Up (Utility 7), Chevy Pick-Up (Utility 8) and Jeep Cherokee (Car 9)) are red with white stripes, and the rest of the official vehicles for senior officers do not have Dodge markings. WFD responds to approximately 2,000 support calls each year. The WFD serves as an EMS backup agency for the city if the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad is unavailable. Rescue Squad

The Westfield Volunteer Rescue Team is staffed 24 hours a day by certified EMT volunteers. Shifts range from 5 o’clock in the morning and afternoon to 2 o’clock at night. The detachment consists of three ambulances with a brigade in each shift. Members are alerted in case another emergency occurs and the original team responds to the doctor’s call. Dispatchers are also volunteers, answering phones directly from the police line.

As of March 23, 2011, there were a total of 20,684 registered voters in Westfield, of which 6,485 (31.4% vs. 8% countywide) were registered as Democrats, 5,244 people (25.4% vs. 15.3%) were registered as Republicans, and 8 942 people. Cranford is a borough in Union County, New Jersey, located 14 miles (23 km) southwest of Manhattan. The 2010 United States Census reported that the township had a population of 22,625, an increase of 47 (+0. 2%) from the 22,578 counted in the 2000 Census, which in turn decreased by 55 (-0.2%). .2%) of 22,633 people counted in the 2000 census. 1990 Census.

Cranford was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey State Legislature on March 14, 1871, from portions of Clark, Linden, Springfield, Union, and Westfield Townships. Portions of the borough were taken to form Garwood (in 1903) and Kenilworth (in 1907). The borough’s name is said to come from the Crane family, including John Crane who built a mill in 1720 on the River Rahway.

The Cranford Historical Society, a private enterprise founded in 1927 and located in Hanson Park at Springfield Avenue, maintains the Crane-Phillips House (c. 1845) located at 124 North Union Avenue as a museum.

Historical Figures

Although no known residents of Cranford died during the American Civil War, at least 22 were active in the Union Army at the time of Gen. Robert E. Lee’s surrender. The last surviving Cranford Civil War veteran died in 1935.

James E. Warner (1866–1933) – Former Union County Sheriff who was the namesake of James E. Warner Square at Cranford railway station. Alarmed by the then increasing pollution of the Rahway River given the clear waters of his youth, Warner campaigned for the preservation of the Rahway River and the Rahway River Parkway parkland. One of Sheriff Warner’s successful goals in dealing with the pollution of the Rahway River was his fight to fire papermakers; one such venue is now a regional theater known as the Paper Mill Theatre, Millburn. Cranford Canoe Club, built in 1908, still offers canoes and kayaks for rent on the river in the city.

Charles Genzel (1859–1936) was one of the founders of the Union County Parks Commission, which maintained a park throughout the Rahway River and its tributaries in the 1920s, the Greenway now known as the Rahway River Parkway. He was an engineer for the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New Jersey Central Railroad. Hansel lived on the 300 block of North Union Avenue in a house that still stands today, later moving to what is now Gray Funeral Home near what is now Hansel Dam by Sperry Park. For his efforts to preserve the Rahway River, a memorial brass plaque was placed in Echo Lake Park for Hansel.

Joshua Bryant (1852–1898) was Cranford’s first black law enforcement officer and the borough’s first black citizen to hold elected office.

William P. Westervelt is credited with foiling the Baltimore Plot, an unsuccessful assassination attempt on President-elect Abraham Lincoln. He did this by cutting the telegraph wires that would have alerted the assassins to Lincoln’s arrival.

Geography

According to the US Census Bureau, the township had a total area of 4.87 square miles (12.62 km ²), including 4.84 square miles (12.52 km ²) of land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km ²) of water (0.78%). .

The Borough is bordered by nine municipalities: Garwood and Westfield to the west, Springfield Township to the north, Kenilworth to the northeast, Rosel and Rosel Park to the east, Linden to the southeast, Winfield Township and Clark to the south.

Cranford Canoe Club – Springfield Avenue and Orange Avenue The Cranford Canoe Club rents canoes and kayaks for trips on the River Rahway in Cranford. The current structure was built as a private canoe club in 1908.

Lenape Park in Cranford, Kenilworth, Springfield, Union and Westfield. Rahway River Parkway is a parkland greenway that hugs the Rahway River and its tributaries. It was designed in the 1920s by the firm of Olmsted Brothers, sons of the eminent landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. The Cranford section follows the banks of the meandering Rahway River as it flows south through Lenape Park, Nomahegan Park, Hampton Park, McConnell Park, Hanson Park, Sperry Park, Crane Park, Mill Drasher Park, and Mohawk Park.

Cranford Riverwalk

Cranford Riverwalk and Heritage Corridor The Rahway River Boulevard section begins in parkland near where Orange Avenue meets Springfield at the Cranford Canoe Club and follows the Rahway River on its way south to mill Williams-Drescher from the early 18th century. At the Heritage Plaza building on the southwest corner of South Avenue and Centennial Avenue, the century-old stone walls and iconic stone columns winding through the woodland to the Dröscher Mill are still in place but in need of restoration and preservation. Future plans include renovating the Skating Pond at the Kaltenbach Estate, the Victorian Footbridge and Squire Williams Picnic Grove in Mill Drescher Park.

2010 Census

The 2010 US Census counted 22,625 people, 8,583 households, and 6,154 families in the township. The population density was 4,684.6 people per square mile (1,808.7 people per 1 km ² ). There were 8,816 housing units at an average density of 1,825. 4 per square mile (704.8/km ²). The racial makeup was 91.85% (20,781) White, 2.62% (592) Black or African American, 0.08% (18) Native American, 2.84% (643) Asian, Pacific Islander 0.02% (4), 1.03% (234) from other races and 1.56% (353) from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 6.51% (1,474) of the population.

Of 8,583 households, 33.4% had children under the age of 18; 60.2% were married couples living together; 8.4% of women’s families lived without husbands, and 28.3% did not have a family. Of all households, 24.8% were made up of individuals and 13.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61, and the average family size is 3.15.

Cranford is governed under New Jersey’s city form of municipal government, one of 141 states (out of 565) that use it form, the second most common form of government in the state. The Township Committee is made up of five members who are directly elected by popular vote in partisan elections to three-year terms of office on a staggered basis, with one or two seats elected annually in the November three-year general election.

The members of the committee elect a chairman of the committee, who assumes the title of mayor, and another who is elected deputy mayor. Both positions are for one year. Four of the committee members take on departmental oversight functions as commissioner of finance, commissioner of public safety, commissioner of public works and engineering, and commissioner of public affairs. Mayor of Cranford does not accept departmental appointments. The township committee is a part-time body and the township government is run day by day by the township administrator and heads of various departments. The police chief is Ryan Greco, the township administrator is Jamie Cryan, and the township clerk is Patty Donahue.

As of 2021, the members of the Cranford Township committee are Mayor Kathleen Miller Prunty (deceased, 2022), Brian Andrews (second year), Jason Garis (third year), Thomas H. Hannen, Jr. (deceased, 2021) and Mary O’Connor. (R, 2022).

Women in elected office

As of 2021, eleven women have been elected to the Cranford Township Committee and four women have served as Mayor of Cranford. Barbara Brande was the first woman elected to the township committee and the first female mayor of the township. Mayor Brande was elected to the city committee at 1974 and re-elected in 1977, serving a total of six years. She was mayor of Cranford in 1977. Caroline Vollero, the longest-serving woman on the borough committee at nine years, was Cranford’s second female mayor in 1994. Union County Freeholder Bette Jane Kowalski is a Cranford resident and the first Cranford woman to be elected to the Union County Council of Chosen Freeholders. Freeholder Kowalski was an unsuccessful candidate for the Cranford Township Committee at 1999 and served as Chairman of the Union County Freeholder in 2007 and 2019.

Garden State Park runs through the community, connecting Clark to the south with Kenilworth to the north. Parkway Boulevard is accessed at junction 136 on County Route 607 at Linden/Roselle/Winfield Park and at junction 137 on Route 28. Junction 136 is known as the “four corners” where Clark, Winfield, Cranford and Linden meet.

Cranford’s Pace Car program creates safer roads when drivers promise to “drive within the posted speed limit”, “stop at all stop signs”, “stop at all red lights”, and “yield to pedestrians at crosswalks”.

Public Transportation

Railroad

Cranford Station is in the lower right corner and offers commuter service to Newark and elsewhere.

Cranford Station service offers train service to Newark’s Penn Station approximately 20 minutes, and to New York City’s Penn Station approximately 49 minutes in total. The World Trade Center station on PATH can also be reached from Cranford in less than 50 minutes (42 minutes on the 6:52 am Express).

Cranford Station also offers transit to other points to the east, along with Raritan, High Bridge, and numerous points to the west on the NJ Transit Raritan Valley Line, formerly a mainline of the New Jersey Central Railroad. Newark Penn Station, Secaucus Junction, and NYC Penn Station provide access to all other NJT rail lines (except Atlantic City), PATH, AirTrain from Newark to Newark Liberty International Airport, Amtrak regional and long-distance trains, and also Long Island Rail trains. Road .

Bus

The express bus route (113x) offers weekday non-stop travel from the north side of Cranford Station and other Cranford locations on North Avenue to the Port Authority bus station in midtown Manhattan in approximately 40 minutes. Boxcar’s privately owned buses also provide direct commuter bus services to downtown Manhattan in approximately 40 minutes.

NJ Transit also provides bus service on routes 112 and 113 between Cranford and the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York, as well as routes 59and 66 to Newark. The 56, 57 and 58 routes provide local service.

Air

Newark Liberty International Airport is approximately 13 minutes away in Newark/Elizabeth. Linden Airport, a general aviation facility, is in the nearby town of Linden.

Cargo

The southern part of the township is bisected by Conrail’s passenger-and-freight only Lehigh Line (jointly owned by CSX and Norfolk Southern) on the tracks of the former Lehigh Valley Railroad. The former Staten Island Railroad connects to the Raritan Valley Line at Cranford, reaching the island via Arthur Kill’s vertical drawbridge. This line has been refurbished and since 2007 it connects the Port of Newark and Howland Hook and transports containers from the Howland Hook Marine Terminal, an intermodal freight service known as ExpressRail.

In film and television

Several episodes of the third season of the 1990s Nickelodeon television show The Adventures of Pete and Pete were filmed in Cranford. Episodes of the series were filmed at various locations in Cranford, including Brookside Place School, Cranford High School, Orange Avenue Pool, and a state-of-the-art barbershop. Scenes for the main characters’ home were filmed at the house at 11 Willow Street.
Cranford is the setting for the 2005 film Guess Who starring Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher.

Montclair, NJ

Montclair (/mɒp(t) ˈklɛər/) is a township in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township had a population of 37,669people, ^[9] ^[10] ^[11] reflecting a decrease of 1308 (-3.4%) from 38 977 counted in the 2000 Census, which in turn increased by 1248 (+ 3 .3%) of 37,729 counted in the 1990 Census. ^[20] As of 2010, it was the 60th most populous municipality in New Jersey. ^[21]

Montclair was first formed as a borough on April 15, 1868 from parts of Bloomfield Township, ^[22] so that a second railroad to Montclair could be built. After the referendum held on 21 February 1894 years old, Montclair was converted to a borough effective February 24, 1894. ^[23] It takes its name from French Montclair , meaning “clear mountain” or “bright mountain”. ^[24] ^[25]

Montclair, becoming the third of more than a dozen Essex County municipalities to reclassify themselves as townships to take advantage of federal law. revenue sharing policy that allocated a large per capita share of state aid to municipalities to boroughs. ^[27] ^[28] ^[29]

According to the US Census Bureau, the township had a total area of 6.25 square miles (16.17 km ²), including 6.24 square miles (16.16 km ²) of land and 0.01 square miles (0.02 km ²) of water (0.11%). ^[1] ^[2]

Montclair is located on the east side of the First Mountain of Mount Wochung. Some of the higher elevations in the town provide excellent views of the surrounding area and the New York skyline about 12 miles (19 km) away. ^[31]

Named communities in the township include Church Street, Frog Hollow, Montclair Heights, South End, Upper Montclair, and Watchung Plaza. ^[32]

Residents of Montclair use two main Zip codes. The central and southern portions of the township are designated 07042. Upper Montclair is north of Watchung Avenue and has a separate zip code, 07043. Since zip codes do not exactly follow municipal boundaries, several houses on the border with neighboring towns fall into the category of these communities’ zip codes. Several homes in some adjacent municipalities use one of the two postcodes assigned to Montclair, as does HackensackUMC Mountainside (07042, formerly known as Mountainside Hospital), whose campus is on the Glen Ridge border. ^[33] ^[34] Small sections in the southeast of the village fall into Glen Ridge ZIP Code 07028.

southwest, Pearl Creek to the northwest, and Yantako Creek to the northeast, all on the Passaic River watershed. Yantako and Toni streams are dammed in the parks to form ponds. The streams of Wigwama, Nishuane and Toni flow into the Second River, while the rest flow into the Third River. Montclair lies just north of the northernmost boundary of the Rahway River watershed.

Montclair borders the municipalities of Bloomfield, Cedar Grove, Glen Ridge, Orange, Verona and West Orange in Essex; and Clifton and Little Falls in Passaic County. ^[35] ^[36] ^[37]

Montclair’s southern boundary is a straight line between Eagle Rock on the crest of Watchung First Mountain and the point where Orange Road begins at the foot of Ridgewood Avenue. The eastern boundary is roughly a straight line between this point and the point southwest of where Broad Street crosses the Third River. The western boundary runs roughly along the crest of Watchung First Mountain between Eagle Rock and the river. Essex County/Passaic County border. Climate

Montclair has a temperate climate with warm to hot, humid summers and cool to cold winters, characteristic of the Köppen climate classification humid continental climate. January is usually the coldest month with average high temperatures above 30 degrees. Fahrenheit and lows average 21. July, the warmest month, is characterized by high temperatures in the mid-80s and lows in the 70s, with an average high of 86 degrees. From April to June, and from September to early November, temperatures in Montclair range from 60 to 70 degrees.

Montclair receives approximately 50 inches (1,300 mm) of rain per year, above the United States average of 39 inches (990 mm). ^{[ citation needed ]} Snowfall is common from December to early March and is about 30 inches (760 mm) per year. The number of days per year in Montclair with measurable precipitation is 90; the area has an average of 202 sunny days.

Montclair is one or two degrees warmer than neighboring municipalities. The 2010 US Census counts 37,669 people, 15,089 households, and 9,446 families in the township. The population density was 5,971.2 inhabitants per square mile (2,305.5/km² ). There were 15,911 housing units at an average density of 2,522.2 per square mile (973.8/km). ² ). The racial makeup was 62.16% (23,416). White, 27.16% (10,230) Black or African American, 0.16% (59) Native American, 3.81% (1,434) Asian, 0.02% (9) Pacific Islander, 2.19% (826) from other races and 4.50% (1695) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.46% (2,810) of the population. ^[9]

Of the 15,089 households, 33.9% had children under the age of 18; 46.1% were married couples living together; 13.2% lived in a family with no husbands, and 37.4% were non-families. Of all households 30. 9% are made up of individuals and 8.9% are someone single people 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.15. ^[9]

25.5% of the population were under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 30.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% are aged 65 and over. The mean age was 39.9 years. For every 100 women, there were 87.2 men. For every 100 women aged 18 and over, there were 82.2 men. ^[9]

Census Bureau 2006–2010 The American Community Survey found that (in 2010 inflation-adjusted dollars) the median household income was $95,696 (with a margin of error of +/- $5,396), and the median family income was $126,983 (+/- $8,950). ). Men had a median income of $83,589 (+/- $5,955) compared to $66,063 (+/- $3,616) for women. The per capita income for the township was $53,572 (+/- $2,671). About 4.6% of families and 2.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.0% of those under the age of 18 and 4. 6% of those aged 65 and over. ^[53]

Of the 15,020 households in Montclair, 34.3% had children under the age of 18, 47.2% were married couples living together, 14.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.5% were non-families. Individuals living alone made up 29.3% of all households, and in 8.6% of households that person was 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53, and the average family size is 3.16. ^[48] ^[49]

Like most stable mature communities, Montclair had many people in every age group: 25.6% under the age of 18, 6.6% between the ages of 18 and 24 years, 31.9% between the ages of 25 and 44, 24.1% between the ages of 45 and 64, and 12.0% of those who were 65 and over. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 women, there were 86.3 men. For every 100 women aged 18 and over, there were 80.7 men. ^[48] ^[49]

The median income for a household in the township was $74,894, and the median income for a family was $96,252. Men had a median income of $64,151 versus $43,520 for women. The per capita income for the township was $44,870. About 3.9% of families and 5.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.4% of those under the age of 18 and 7.2% of those aged 65 and over. ^[48] ^[49]

Economy

Montclair has six distinct commercial zones: the main commercial area of the town. This intersection is also known as the Six Corners. It is home to some of Montclair’s largest shops and restaurants, as well as many upscale restaurants and boutiques near the center of this commercial area. Near the eastern end of the area is Lackawanna Plaza, where the Lackawanna train station was once located. There is a post office one block north of this area. In 2015, Montclair Center received the Great American Main Street Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. ^[54]
Upper Montclair in the north of the city is the second largest shopping area. The center is located at the intersection of Valley Road and Bellevue Avenue and includes surrounding areas. The Upper Montclair Business District is home to several restaurants and shops. This commercial zone is home to several chain stores such as Starbucks, Talbots, Williams Sonoma, Gap, Cold Stone Creamery, Supercuts, and CVS. Despite the recession, several new national and local outlets opened in the area in 2009–2010. Upper Montclair also has a park, Anderson Park, and the train station, Upper Montclair, nearby. There is a post office here.
Watchung Plaza is located at the intersection of Watchung Avenue and Park Street, at the intersection of two Montclair streets. Zip codes, 07042 and 07043. This is home to many moms and dads and other small businesses. Watchung Plaza has its own post office. It is served by Watchung Avenue Station.
Walnut Street built around Walnut Street Station. The Montclair Farmers’ Market is located here in spring, summer, and fall.
South End, in the south of the city, at the intersection of Cedar Avenue and Orange Road.
Valley Road, between Chestnut Street and Claremont Avenue, known locally as “Frog Hollow”. The area has a number of mall-style shops on one side of Valley Road, and shops with residential apartments upstairs on the other side.

Arts & Culture

In 2018, Brooke Lee Foster of The New York Times stated that it was one of several “least suburban suburbs, each noted by shoppers for its culture and fashion factor, as well as housing fund and refined life after the city. ^[55]

Montclair is home to many arts and theater venues and, despite its relatively small size, many art venues. It has its own art museum, the Montclair Art Museum, and several smaller galleries.

Montclair also has one cinema, the Clairidge Cinema on Bloomfield Avenue, which screens various types of films, from documentaries to small indie films. The township hosted its first annual film festival in 2012 to provide a platform for filmmakers from New Jersey, the US, and the world. ^[56]

Live theaters include The Montclair Operetta Company, Wellmont Theatre, Montclair State University Casser Theatre, Montclair State University Life Hall Theater and Studio Theatre. Bloomfield Avenue has a community stage used for concerts and other events. There are many art galleries around Montclair, but most of them are concentrated in the Bloomfield Avenue area of downtown. ^[57] Concerts are held at the Wellmont Theater and several churches and auditoriums sponsored by Outpost in the Burbs, a community organization. In 2017, the Montclair Orchestra was formed as a semi-professional orchestra composed of both professionals and students from leading colleges. ^[58]

Montclair was the setting for some of the stories in the HBO television series The Sopranos , and many of Montclair’s streets, places, and businesses were featured in the show, such as Bloomfield Avenue. ^[59]

The Montclair Public Library is one of New Jersey’s oldest public libraries, with the largest collection of materials in northern New Jersey. ^[60] Its director is Peter Coyle. ^[61]

Anderson Park

Montclair has many parks and reserves. Parks in Montclair are both county and municipal. Additional open space includes Presby Memorial Iris Gardens, and many school-owned athletic fields, namely Montclair State University with Sprague Field. In total, Montclair has 153.9 acres (0.623 km). ² ) city park lands spread across 18 parks and 123.8 acres (0.501 km ² ) county park land, consisting of five parks. ^[67]

Municipal parks include Mountainside Park, the borough’s largest at 33.2 acres (13.4 ha), which offers extensive tennis and recreational opportunities, and also includes Presby Memorial Iris Gardens, a living museum of 6.5 acres (2.6 ha) donated by the Frank Presby family, which is maintained by volunteers and is dedicated to Iris. ^[68] Covering nearly 20 acres (8.1 ha) of wetlands and uplands along the Third River, the Alonso F. Bonsal Nature Reserve offers hiking trails and other passive recreation. ^[69] Yantako Brook Spanning 11.5 acres (4.7 ha), the park surrounds a pond that is fed by Yantako Creek and which in turn flows into the Third River on its way to the Passaic River. ^[70]

The town has 18 public tennis courts, four skating rinks (two of which are indoors), and three public pools: the mountainside pool, the Nishuane pool, and the Essex pool. ^[71]

In 2007, the villagers called for the construction of a public skatepark. ^[72] Community members stepped up efforts in 2010 and lobbied the Parks and Recreation Committee for support. The city council decided to approve the project, but did not allocate funds for it. ^[73] ^[74] ^[75]

Government

Local Government

under the Faulkner Act, whose creator, Bayard H. Faulkner, was the former mayor of Montclair. ^[76] The township is one of 42 municipalities (out of 565) in the state that use this form of government. ^[77] The governing body consists of the mayor and the village council, who are elected simultaneously for four-year terms. nonpartisan bases in the elections held as part of the May municipal elections. The mayor is directly elected by the voters. The borough council consists of six members, of which two council seats are elected from the city. at-large and one seat on the council is elected from each of the four houses. ^[7] ^[78] The Deputy Mayor is elected by the six members of the council from among its members, and the position is largely ceremonial. While the mayor has no executive powers, the mayor presides over council meetings and has a voice and say in its work. As of 2020, the Mayor of Montclair is Sean M. Spiller. Montclair Township Council members are Deputy Mayor William L. Herlock (First Ward), Laurie Price Abrams (Third Ward), David Cummings (Fourth Ward), Robert J. Russo (At-Large), Robin Schlager (Second Ward), and Peter Jacobellis ( At-Large), whose terms of office expire on 30 June 2024. ^[3] ^[80] ^[81] ^[82] ^[83]

In the election held on May 12, 2020, Sean M. Spiller was elected mayor, defeating René Baskerville. Peter Jacobellis and incumbent Robert Russo won two seats overall, defeating three other candidates – James Kotter, Carmel Lafman and Roger Terry. Incumbent Robin Schlager won the second ward by defeating Christina M. Thomas; Lori Price Abrams defeated Margarita Joralemon in the Third Division; incumbent Bill Herlock won the First Ward seat by defeating John Hearn; and David Cummings, who ran unopposed, won in the fourth zone. ^[84]

Montclair is split between the 10th and 11th congressional districts. ^[85] and is part of New Jersey’s 34th state legislative district. ^[10] ^[86] ^[87] Prior to the 2010 Census, Montclair was part of the 8th congressional district and 10th congressional district, a change made by the New Jersey Redistricting Commission which went into effect in January 2013 based on the results of the November 2012 general election. ^[88] The split that occurred in 2013 moved the southern part of the village (26,730 inhabitants) to the 10th district, and moved the northern part (11,299 inhabitants) to the 11th district. ^[85] ^[89]

Montclair is considered a suburban area of New York. NJ Transit and DeCamp Bus Routes are public transportation providers. Average travel time to Montclair is 38 minutes one way. Twenty-four percent of commuters use public transport, and 59% travel alone. Public transport in Montclair is used by 12 times more passengers than the national average. ^{[ citation needed ]}

Bus

NJ Transit buses 11, 28, 29, 34, 97, 191 and 705 run through Montclair, mostly along Main Street, Bloomfield Avenue. ^[131] ^[132] New Jersey Transit Bus routes:

#11 from Newark City Center via Verona, Cedar Grove, and Little Falls to Willowbrook Mall in Wayne. The only Montclair street it runs on is Bloomfield Avenue.
No. 28 follows Route 29 on Bloomfield Avenue to mid Montclair, where it runs north along Park Street, Watchung Avenue, and Valley Road to Montclair State University, and to Willowbrook Mall on weekends
#29 between West Caldwell and Newark, passing through Caldwell, Verona, Montclair, Glen Ridge, and Bloomfield on Bloomfield Avenue. It goes to Parsippany at rush hour. The only Montclair street it runs on is Bloomfield Avenue.
#34 to Newark via East Orange and Orange on some trips, otherwise it goes to Bloomfield via Orange Road, Elm Street and Bloomfield Avenue. Next up is Montclair High School during start and finish times.
#97 runs from downtown Montclair south on Orange and Harrison Roads through Orange.
#191 runs from Willowbrook Mall through Little Falls to Montclair State University, then to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan.
# 705 from Passaic along Alexander Avenue, Grove Street (one block), Mt. Hebron Road and through Montclair State University to Willowbrook Shopping Center.

All of these routes except 97, 191 and 705 were originally trolleybus lines run by the Public Railway. There was a trolley garage on Bloomfield Avenue. At 19In the 1930s and 1950s, the carts were destroyed and replaced by buses.

DeCamp bus routes 33 and 66 run through Montclair to the Port Authority bus station in New York, carrying mostly passengers.

Railroad

The Montclair-Boonton Line runs through Montclair, serving New York Pennsylvania Station via Hoboken Terminal to the east, and Hackettstown to the west. ^[137] Seven NJ Transit Rail stations serve Montclair: 9 Bay Street0097 [138] Walnut Street, ^[139] Watchung Avenue, ^[140] Upper Montclair, ^[141] Mountain Avenue, ^[142] and Montclair Heights in Montclair ^{[149], and Montclair State University station in the Great Label area of Little Falls. ^[144] Weekend trains only run at Bay Street station.}

Montclair has a long history of railroads. The first railroad to Montclair was built in 1856 by the Newark and Bloomfield Railroad. It ended in a train station in downtown Montclair. First the Morris and Essex Railroad, then the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad leased the line.

In 1868, the Montclair Railroad built another branch line through Montclair, causing controversy leading to Montclair’s separation from Bloomfield. Shortly thereafter, it was taken over by the New York and Greenwood Lake Railroad, a subsidiary of Erie Railroad. A third railroad to Morristown was planned in 1860 and construction began, but the Panic of 1873 ended the project. In 1912, the Lakavan Railway built a large terminal at the end of its line. The Erie and Lackawanna Railroads later merged to form the Erie–Lackawanna Railroad, which operated both lines for many decades. They were then operated by Conrail for approximately one year, after which NJ Transit took over passenger service while Conrail continued freight service. Meanwhile terminal 1912 was closed in 1981 and turned into stores. This station has been replaced by the Bay Street station. In 2002, two rail lines were connected with the construction of the Montclair Connection. ^[145]

Building

Montclair is known for its historic architecture. It is home to six historic districts listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places, 92 individually listed landmarks, and two local commercial districts. Notable architects’ work includes designs by Van Vleck and Goldsmith, Charles Follen McKim, McKim, Mead and White, Henry Hudson Holley, Charles A. Platt, Alexander Jackson Davis, Dudley Van Antwerp, Effingham R. North, Montrose Morris, Francis Nelson and others. ^{[ quote needed ]}

In 2018, Bobbi Brown, founder and former CMO of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, and her husband, realtor Stephen Ploefker, opened The George, a 32-room boutique hotel on North Mountain Avenue, which was originally a private house built in 1902. ^[146]

Montclair also housed many hotels, including the defunct Montclair Hotel. In 2013, plans were announced to open a new 100-room hotel and a liquor license in Montclair. ^[147]

Montclair High School has its own newspaper climber , and Montclair State University have their own student newspaper, Montclarion . WNJN – one of four nationwide PBS member stations NJTV – is also located there.
