In May 2007, the Dance With Stars dance studio officially opened in the Houston suburb of Katy. The heads of the studio – Ekaterina Kuznetsova and her partner Cristiano Callegari – are some of the best dancers in the world.

Katya Kuznetsova started dancing at the age of 5 in Donbass. At the age of 16, she entered the department of ballroom choreography at the Kiev National University of Culture and Arts. “In addition to the main areas – ballroom and Latin American, we studied Russian, Ukrainian, Caucasian folk dances, ballet, step, jazz, modern, duets, support, in a word, everything related to choreography,” she recalls. In the last years of the university, the student worked a lot, took part in international dance competitions, winning prizes.
Katya Kuznetsova and Cristiano Callegari are included in the list of the 24 best professional dance couples in the world in the Latin American program according to the results of the 3 major world tournaments held in London (Katya is joking: it is believed that if you win these competitions, you will be “second after God” in your category). They were finalists in the 2008-2011 American Open Nationals. In September 2016, Katya and Cristiano became finalists at the South American Show Dance tournament, entering the top four of the world’s best dancers in the category, which in Russia is called “sequey” (free dance composition performed by one couple for 4 minutes).
But the main thing for Katya is her brainchild – a dance studio. “We started by training in my home studio. I then had a small backbone of students – several Russian-speaking children’s couples. When there were more students, it was decided to open their own studio. Now we are recruiting children from 3 years old, we have a whole group of three-four-year-olds. These are beautiful, harmoniously developed children. For them, we arrange both tournaments and shows so that the guys have the opportunity to show themselves, and the parents have the opportunity to see the progress of their own child and the level of other children.

Further, the age of students is not limited. Elderly dancers also work in Katya’s studio. Some people dance just to maintain their health, others take part in competitions and even win: “This is how we differ from other “network” studios that teach dance only for fun. People who are interested in serious sports training often come to us. But we also teach entertaining dances and so-called “social” dances: salsa, for example. We also have hip hop and break dancing classes for kids and adults. The new program, which we opened a month ago, is called “Dances of the peoples of the world. ” We teach traditional choreography of Russian, Ukrainian and Azerbaijani dances (many Baku residents live in Katy). As proposals come in, we can include, for example, Jewish dances,” says Katya.

“I believe in teamwork,” admits Ekaterina, “it was important for me to recruit a team of like-minded coaches. This is not easy, because, firstly, there are not so many professional dancers with a capital letter, and secondly, there are not so many who want to live in Texas. In the US, the dance crowd is mainly concentrated in New York and California. But in our studio there is a wonderful galaxy of coaches. In addition to me, there are two women and one man who graduated from the Kiev National University and received a universal education. I know that both with children and adults, work will be carried out efficiently and professionally. All our teachers are excellent professional dancers and wonderful teachers who know how to find an individual approach to each student. After all, ballroom dancing is an individual sport. The teacher should also be energetic, positive-minded, giving his best in the lesson. He must “infect” his students with his enthusiasm.”
“My favorite dance to date is the rumba – the “dance of love” as it is called. In this dance, the performers demonstrate their feelings as much as possible. And my students like fast, incendiary dances – cha-cha-cha, jive. What does a person who has worked all day in the office need? Disconnect from your problems, plunge into the world of dance, hear perky, cheerful music. The teacher helps the student who entered the studio to leave all his problems at the door and enjoy the dance. Many of my male students say that dancing has opened up a whole world for them (especially if they’ve been through difficult divorces or big troubles at work before) and that now they can’t wait for the next class. I am pleased to see how people change, how they get in good shape, how their mood changes and self-confidence appears.

“You can come to our studio without a partner. We have groups where men are in the lead in terms of number (we even looked for partners for them by contacting social networks), there are classes where there are more women. Sometimes couples come to us, sometimes only men come whose wives are already good dancers, and they want to “pull themselves up” to the level of their spouses so as not to lose face at dance parties. It happens that women, who have better control of the body and are more plastic by nature, grasp the movements faster than men, and men, with their perseverance and serious attitude, make more progress.
One of my students, with whom I have been dancing for 8 years and participate in tournaments with him, suffers from a lack of peripheral (lateral) vision (that is, his field of vision is narrowed, he sees everything as if looking through a pipe). Imagine that a person with such a diagnosis, who does not drive a car and has difficulty orienting in space, participates in competitions and wins prizes. At first it was difficult, but now he feels like a fish in water. I think it’s a miracle!”

“Some people think that ballroom dancing is expensive. But if you approach this wisely and plan your classes correctly, then you will get a fairly budget project. Ballroom dancing is a wonderful sport for people of all ages: for those who danced as a child and now would like to return, and for those who want to continue dancing, who want to find a hobby, and for those who have never danced, but always dreamed of it. To everyone who dreams of taking up dancing, I would advise you not to postpone until tomorrow, but to try now. Dance can change your life forever!
We do not stand still, we are planning to build our own separate two-story studio with one large and many small dance halls, under which we buy land. This will give us the opportunity to realize all our dreams, to combine all our activities. Our clients in Katy are already looking forward to the opening of the new studio. I think we have to wait a year. In the future, we may open a studio in Houston too.
