In the world

VLADIMIR MASHATIN, Boston Photo by the author

“I would learn Russian only for that…” American Russian-speaking fathers and mothers who came here 20 -25 years ago, they know how to finish this rather outdated phrase of the poet in a different way. But their children are not. They are almost American now. For the older generation, knowledge of the English language often remains at the household, “kitchen” level

However, knowledge of the Russian language also provides a competitive advantage in finding a prestigious job. In the Greater Boston area, for example, where about 40,000 Russian-speaking immigrants from the former Soviet Union live, it is easier to find a well-paid job as a doctor or lawyer, knowing additional Russian. Of the 10,000 children of Russian-speaking families, half enter medical colleges and university departments. In Massachusetts, perhaps more than anywhere else in America, a good education is valued. Mark Twain wrote that if “in Philadelphia they ask who your parents are, in New York – how much money you have, then in Boston – what do you know.”

The first public Russian free school on the US East Coast opened last fall in Jacksonville, Florida. The school program for 705 immigrant children fully complies with American educational standards. All subjects at the school, except for the daily lessons of the Russian language and literature, are taught in English. But the most common Russian educational institutions in America are extended-day schools and Sunday church schools at Orthodox parishes and synagogues. In addition, there are various studios and training centers – ballet, fine arts, theater and sports, where training and communication is exclusively in Russian. There is also a system of small private Russian kindergartens for eight kids. They are taken here from the age of two. By law, one teacher can only be licensed to educate so many children. A larger staff of educators-teachers is responsible for a larger number of kids.

Private kindergarten is expensive, like all private American education. Not every immigrant family is willing to pay $1,000 a month for kindergarten education. Therefore, in America, the system of home preschool and additional education is very common. For $15-30 an hour, you can invite any teacher and baby sitter.

American children leave school at 18. The education system in the United States is largely state-owned, controlled and funded by the federal, state, and municipal governments. The public school system is complemented by a large number of private colleges and universities. Local authorities set standards for public education and examine students. State funding for schools is often determined by how much their students have improved on multiple tests. Obtaining the maximum 800 points when passing the main American exam, the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) exam-test for learning ability, is the dream of every parent and aspiring student. The exam is paid and costs $38. The results become known in ten days, and at the request of the applicant, the examiners can send them to any college and university. Next, you need to fill out an application form for each college or university (costs $ 200). This questionnaire is more like a multi-page resume when applying for a job. It includes not only information about exam scores, but also essays on hobbies and interests, achievements and awards outside of school, as well as several essays on given topics. In addition, the student is required to provide recommendations from teachers. The final chord in the long and difficult process of entering an American university is an interview with a volunteer, a graduate of this educational institution. American applicants for four years after graduation have the right to constantly improve their SAT exam scores by taking these paid tests again and again on set days and in special training centers.

Oddly enough, the quality of American public school education directly depends on the cost of housing and land in a given city and on the willingness of parents to pay taxes for good schools. For America, this connection is absolutely justified and natural. If land is expensive and a family-owned individual home costs more than a million dollars, federal and state taxes are very high. This means that local authorities can spend much more money on teachers’ salaries and invite more “quality” and expensive teachers. Parents who want to give their children a good education come to the districts where schools have earned an excellent reputation. House prices are on the rise, and the combination of money and the ambition of dedicated parents is pushing schools to even higher levels of educational quality. The opposite happens in poor urban areas. During the last Massachusetts gubernatorial election, in a special referendum, residents ticked off their desire to raise the state land tax just because they felt teachers were underpaid on the ballot. Such a situation in Russia can only be imagined in a fantastic future.

Putting a child “on the escalator” is a term used in America to denote the desire of parents to start a continuous educational process for their child from kindergarten to university. “Escalators” come in different directions and lengths. The end of many years of successful educational process is the complete refusal of family members, whose annual income is less than 200 thousand dollars, from vacations and expensive purchases for four years, since the annual tuition fee at the college in which the child is admitted is sometimes tens of thousands of dollars.
