Businesses lose billions due to lack of child care, Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker says

newsEducation

Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker speaks about the importance of child care during the Dallas Regional Chamber’s third annual State of Early Education.(Ben Torres / Special Contributor)

By Haeven Gibbons

8:00 AM on Jun 3, 2022 CDT — Updated at 10:17 AM on Jun 3, 2022 CDT

American businesses are losing billions each year because workers don’t have enough access to child care, officials said at the Dallas Regional Chamber’s third annual State of Early Education address Thursday.

Access to high-quality early childhood education is important because it directly impacts business communities, parents and kids, said Dale Petroskey, president and CEO of the chamber.

Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker, who was the event’s keynote speaker, stressed that adequate and affordable child care is important for communities so businesses and the economy can thrive. And early childhood education is key to helping kids be successful later in life, she added.

But not everyone can afford high-quality preschool or child care or has it nearby. And that leads to businesses nationwide losing about $13 billion annually in costs due to the lack of child care.

Parker shared her own experiences, noting that her daughter’s college tuition at Texas Tech University was less expensive than the tuition at the Montessori school her 4-year-old was attending.

“This is an incredibly debilitating cost for American families, and unfortunately, it’s not getting much better,” Parker said.

While businesses suffer, kids do too.

Research shows that about 90% of brain development occurs by age 5 and that getting high-quality education early is more effective than any other intervention by schools or society later in a child’s life.

What businesses can do to help

Private sector businesses can implement family-friendly policies, Parker said.

The chamber recognized 109 companies in the Dallas region that have implemented family-friendly benefits and policies. (The Dallas Regional Chamber is a supporter of the Education Lab at The Dallas Morning News.)

Such policies that companies can implement to help parents include on-site child care, flexible hours, working remotely and maternity leave. Chamber officials noted that research suggests 35% of Texas workers who have or plan to quit their job cite child care issues as a primary reason.

“We need great child care where our kids can be stimulated, so that parents can go off to work, feeling peace of mind that their kids are getting a good day’s worth of care and education at the same time,” Petroskey said.

Why invest in early education?

Making the Dallas region the best place for people to live, work and do business all starts with delivering a quality education to ensure a strong workforce, Petroskey said.

“We need talented workers who are well educated and trained so they can do the jobs that need to be done here so we can keep growing,” he said. “On the other hand, every person deserves a chance for a good education, a good job and a good life.”

For every dollar invested in early education, the return on investment is between $7 and $12, Parker noted.

Parker added that the United States spends about $500 per child to educate kids under 5. But $14,000 is spent per student in kindergarten through high school. In contrast, Norway spends about $30,000 per child to educate those under 5 while Germany spends about $20,000, she said.

“So frankly, our investments just don’t make sense,” Parker said.

High-quality early childhood education goes beyond day care to include learning opportunities, which means investing in quality instructors as well, she said.

“Usually the women that serve in our child care facilities — that are taking care of your babies and my babies — that are high-quality child care educators make less than a cashier at Buc-ee’s in this country,” she said. “We can do better than that.”

Change in the Dallas area

While the private sector must do its part, local governments can help too, Parker said.

For example, in May, Tarrant County commissioners approved $45 million in federal funds to support child care and make long-term investments in early childhood education across the community.

“This can be transformative and will be transformative in Tarrant County,” Parker said.

Fort Worth, Arlington and Tarrant County leaders had previously funneled $2 million of that federal pandemic aid to boost child care educator pay.

These efforts coincide with others to invest in holistic approaches to expand access to child care.

“The future of the American dream and our success hinges on how we treat our youngest and most vulnerable,” Parker said.

The DMN Education Lab deepens the coverage and conversation about urgent education issues critical to the future of North Texas.

Fort Worth Science and History Museum

The Fort Worth Science and History Museum is located at 1600 Gendy Street, Fort Worth, TX 76107 in the city’s Cultural District. It was opened in 1945 as the Fort Worth Children’s Museum and moved to its current location in 1954. In 1968 the museum adopted its current name. [1] Attractions in the museum include the Noble Planetarium and the Omni Theatre, with Star’s Cafe and Shop Too! gift shop, in addition to traveling and permanent scientific and historical exhibits.

In autumn 2007 the museum was closed for renovation. During construction, the museum had a limited presence in the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame next door, with a “2 museums, 1 roof” temporary campaign. The entire museum was moved to a new building on the same site in 2009. The new building was designed by architects. Legorreta + Legorreta with Gideon Toal and consists of 166,000 square feet. The original Omni Theater and lobby have been renovated but remain mostly intact. In addition, the museum left intact one tree from the original courtyard of the museum and built a museum around it, leaving the tree in an open area called Heritage Yard . The total maximum capacity is 3369 people. The opening of the museum after the renovation took place on Friday, November 20, 2009.

City of Fort Worth, Texas, USA

In northeast Texas, on the banks of the Trinity River, lies the charming city of Fort Worth. It is one of the largest cities in the US. But, despite its size, Fort Worth is a cozy and quiet city that sacredly honors its traditions and customs. Numerous cowboy ranches, old cobbled boulevards, picturesque parks, annually attract crowds of tourists from all over the world. Fort Worth delights with its unique original culture.

The geography of the city and its environs is very extensive – the eastern part is covered by mighty mixed forests, to the west stretched hilly plains and endless prairies. The climate is subtropical – it is quite hot in summer, there is a lot of precipitation, winter is mild, warm and snowy.

      History of the city

In 1840 a defensive fortress was built on the territory of the modern city. It served as a reliable defense against constant Indian raids. Gradually, more and more civilian settlements began to appear around the fortress. But, despite this, for a long time the main function of the fortress was defense. Only after the end of the Civil War, the life of the city entered a peaceful course. Agriculture was widely developed, mainly cattle breeding. Most of the city’s population was engaged in driving cattle.

In 1876, a large railroad was built through the Fort Worth area. It served as a powerful impetus for the development of trade and industry. The export of livestock to other regions of the country has sharply increased. Gradually, the decision came that it was much more profitable to supply finished goods, so the first slaughterhouses were built in the city. The agricultural industry of the city has entered a new stage of its development. Soon an oil field was found in Texas. And in Fort Worth, the first oil refineries appeared. Emigrants from all over the country poured in here in search of new jobs. The city continued to grow and prosper.

During World War II, Fort Worth hosted several military bases and training grounds. The city has become a major aviation center. In the post-war period, he greatly changed. But, the culture, traditions and customs of the old West remained unchanged. Today, about five million tourists from all over the world come to Fort Worth annually. And this is an important factor for its further prosperity and development.

      Fort Worth Attractions

      Cowboy Quarter Stockyards

The city’s main attraction is the charming Stockyards. Walking along its narrow winding streets, tourists are transported to the era of the Wild West. Cowboy saloons, old hotels, a huge farmers’ market – as if they had stepped out of the pages of American novels. Several cowboy houses still remain on the territory of the quarter. Tourists are given the opportunity to live in such a house, learn horseback riding, and also witness how brave, desperate guys, with a flick of the wrist, tame huge angry bulls.

Numerous festivals and shows are held on the territory of the quarter every year. The most striking of them is the Pawnee Bill Show. Its entertainment program includes taming bulls with the help of a lasso, shooting competitions, horse riding, and old cowboy songs. Incredible interest is caused by horse racing without a saddle. Such an extreme show will appeal to thrill-seekers. And from a dangerous rodeo on bulls, they will be completely delighted. Interestingly, not only men, but also women take part in such competitions. They have their own show called Barrel Racing.

      Sundance Square

In the heart of Fort Worth, an atmosphere of carefree fun and celebration reigns. Here lies the huge Sundance Square. On its territory there is a huge number of luxurious restaurants, cozy cafes, luxury boutiques, souvenir stalls, nightclubs and wonderful hotels. Every year, a lot of various festive events and festivals are held here.

      City Botanical Garden

Nature and beauty lovers must visit the Fort Worth Botanical Garden. Fragrant irises, chrysanthemums, lilies and daffodils invite visitors to the Aroma Garden. Here, among low shady trees, there are picturesque ponds with magnolias. Nearby is a large shining fountain. A delightful spectacle opens up before the visitors of the “Japanese Garden”. Tourists have the opportunity to admire cherry blossoms, small sparkling waterfalls, ancient bridges and pavilions. There is also a small cozy tea room. Everyone can relax in its coolness and enjoy a fragrant tea drink. In addition, the Conservatory operates on the territory of the garden. Within its walls, daily displays of unique varieties of orchids and trees are held.

      Kimbrell Museum

Fans of art and architecture should visit the Kimbrell Museum. The museum building itself is a magnificent architectural creation. Its walls contain unique works by Rembrandt, Rubens, Matisse, Picasso, Caravaggio, Turner, Velasquez and Cezanne. Every 4 years, in the concert hall of the museum, the World Piano Competition is held.

      Museum of Modern Art

The Museum of Modern Art deserves no less attention. The museum building is a powerful concrete structure placed in fragile glass boxes. A large swimming pool was created at the entrance to the museum. An indescribable spectacle opens up – the unusual structure of the building is reflected in the clear waters of the pool. In turn, in the glass walls of the building you can see the reflection of the sparkling pool. Inside the building there is a wonderful art gallery and a unique art history museum.

Fort Worth, Texas – LiveJournal of the US Embassy in Moscow

Susan Freeman it’s worth going there. I have been going there every year in December since I was a child. There are three main things that attract me to this city: the art museums, the annual Fort Worth Cattle Show, and of course, the local cuisine. The city has three major art museums: the Fort Worth Museum of Contemporary Art, the Kimbell Art Museum, and the Emon Carter Museum of American Art.

The Kimbell Art Museum has a finely curated permanent collection and always features special works on display. My favorite is The Torment of Saint Anthony, an early painting by Michelangelo, painted by him as a teenager. This work has always amazed my imagination with the young artist’s creative approach to depicting how various demons torment St. Anthony. The Kimbell Museum is distinguished by the rich variety and exceptional talent of the works presented in its collection. The museum exhibits works by such Renaissance artists as Michelangelo and Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini, paintings and graphics by such impressionists as Edgar Degas and paintings by modernists Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. There are also several halls of ancient Egyptian, Mesopotamian and Chinese art. The Kimbell Museum is one of my favorite places in Fort Worth and, believe it or not, admission to the permanent exhibition rooms is free.

Another one of my favorite paintings is in the city’s Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. This is Andy Warhol’s Self Portrait. The museum also exhibits his Twenty Five Colored Marilyns and Gun. Warhol is a true representative of American consumerism culture. His “Self-Portrait” is less typical of his work on its subject and brings him closer to the classical artistic tradition of portraiture.

The Amon Carter Museum of American Art covers several periods of American art within a single space. There, the works of Charles M. Russell and Federic Remington are presented in the art of the Wild West and paintings by Georgia O’Keeffe or photographs of the Brooklyn Bridge are also exhibited there.12 years old It is always interesting for me to return to the Emon Carter Museum, because the variety of art in my home country tells a lot about both the culture and its history.

Those who want to attend an event that is nowhere else but Texas should go to Fort Worth livestock exhibition and rodeo (The Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo). The exhibit showcases livestock, agricultural products, handicrafts, and entertainment acts from all over the state. When I first went to this exhibition in 2009year, I was shocked. I have never seen so many cows in one place, especially such well-groomed cows from all over Texas that were raised by teenagers. I liked the rodeo because the tricks the riders did made the show feel like a little circus. The art market sells both traditional Old West style items and modern handmade pottery. This exhibition is the perfect mix of Texas from the Wild West and modern Texas under the same roof of a gigantic building with enough stuff to last a whole week.

While I’ve said that my favorite place in Fort Worth is the Kimbell Museum, I have to admit that what attracts me most to the city is the food – BBQ and Tex-Mex. My favorite restaurant is Joe T Garcia located in downtown Fort Worth. It is impossible to book a table in advance and there is always a queue winding down the street to its doors. Any company has an alternative: either dinner with enchiladas (Mexican corn tortilla stuffed with cheese, beef or chicken in a spicy tomato and chili sauce) or with fajitas (fried meat with spices). Nachos (corn chips) topped with cheese and pieces of jalapenos (a type of chili pepper) are always served first. Dinner with enchiladas begins with two of these sizzling cheese-filled tortillas, followed by two crispy tortillas (tortillas) with beef, rice, beans and homemade tortillas. All the dishes are very beautiful and very spicy, just like a Tex-Mex should be. My other favorite restaurant is called Angelos BBQ and my family loves it. It looks like a large wooden warehouse, and inside it is decorated with stuffed hunting trophies. At the entrance you will be met by a stuffed bear in the branded T-shirt of this restaurant, a portion of beer and Christmas tree lanterns around him. This restaurant is always decorated with a bit of humor.

All in all, a trip to Fort Worth will be an enjoyable experience, but these are just a few of the things you can enjoy. And it’s great that the city is constantly growing and developing. It has recently begun a major investment in urbanization and the growth of its business and cultural center, resulting in a much livelier and more popular nightlife in the city. I recommend you go to Fort Worth. The main thing is to be open to the perception of its culture and come on an empty stomach.

      Fort Worth

      Suzanne Freeman

      U.S. Embassy Moscow

Fort Worth, Texas is a great place to travel to and a less frequently traveled to part of the United States. I have gone to Fort Worth every December since I was born. For me, the city has three major attractions, the art museums, the annual Fort Worth Stock Show and, of course, the food. There are three major art museums in Fort Worth, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Kimbell Art Museum and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art.

The Kimbell Art Museum has a brilliantly curated permanent collection and always has inspired special exhibits. My personal favorite is the “Torment of Saint Anthony,” an early piece by Michelangelo which he painted in his adolescence. The painting has always captured my imagination because of the creativity of the young artist shown in the variety of ways he portrayed the demons tormenting St. Anthony. The Kimbell is very special because of the diversity and extreme talent represented in its collection. The museum is also home to masterpieces by renaissance artists like Michelangelo and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, paintings and sketches by impressionist painters like Edgar Degas, and paintings by Modernists Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. In addition, there are also several galleries of ancient Egyptian, Mesopotamian and Chinese art. The Kimbell is one of my favorite places in Fort Worth and, unbelievably, entrance into the permanent collection is free.

My clear favorite at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is “Self-Portrait” by Andy Warhol. The museum also has “Twenty Five Colored Marilyns” and “Gun” by Andy Warhol. Warhol is a representative of American consumerist culture. His “Self Portrait” is more rare because it is just a little bit different than his typical themes and places him closer to the classical artistic tradition of portraiture.

The Amon Carter Museum of American Art celebrates multiple eras of American art in one space, like the art of the Wild West by Charles M. Russell and Federic Remington or works of art by Georgia O’Keeffe, or photographs of the Brooklyn Bridge from 1912. I am always interested to go back to the Amon Carter because its diversity in art from my own country is simultaneously cultural and historical.

Those looking for a uniquely Texan experience should visit The Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. The event features livestock, produce, handicrafts, and entertainment from all over the state. When I first went to the Stock Show in 2009, I was shocked. I had never seen so many cows in one place, especially such well-groomed cows which were raised by teenagers from all over Texas. I loved watching the horse shows because the tricks were like a small circus. The art market has more traditional Old West kinds of art, but also modern handmade pottery. The Stock Show is the perfect mixture of Wild West Texas and Modern Texas all in the same huge building with enough activities to do for a week.

Although I said the Kimbell was my favorite attraction in Fort Worth, I really have to say the best part of Fort Worth is the food, the BBQ, and the Tex-Mex. My favorite restaurant is Joe T Garcia in downtown Fort Worth. The restaurant does not take reservations and there is always a line out the door winding down the street. Groups have two choices: the enchilada dinner or the fajita. The meal always starts off with plates of nachos made with big round corn chips loaded with cheese and jalapenos. The enchilada dinner comes with two steaming hot cheese enchiladas, two crispy beef tacos, rice, beans, and homemade tortillas. All of the food is flavorful and spicy and exactly what Tex-Mex should be. My other favorite restaurant is a family favorite, called Angelos BBQ. The restaurant looks like a big wooden warehouse and on the inside it is covered in dead stuffed game. In the entry way there is a stuffed bear with an Angelos T-Shirt, a beer, and Christmas lights draped around it. The restaurant always puts a little humor into its decor.

Overall, Fort Worth is fun trip and these are just a few the attractions. One of the best things about the city is that it is constantly growing and developing. Recently the city has started to invest a lot in the urbanization and growth of its downtown area and as a result the nightlife has become much more exciting and prevalent. I recommend a trip to Fort Worth. Make sure to bring an open mind ready to take in the culture, and an empty stomach.

Dallas and its twin city Fort Worth (Fort Worth, 48 km from Dallas) are closely connected by history and geography, but if “Big D” is skyscrapers and business districts, then Fort Worth is provincial cityscapes, old cobblestone boulevards and stockyards.

The city is literally saturated with the atmosphere of the “Old West” and is proud of its nickname Cowtown (“city of cows”), but livestock and everything related to it are far from its only attractions (suffice it to say that today there is an important center oil industry). Many events take place every year at Sundance Square in downtown Fort Worth, a vibrant entertainment district with great hotels, shops, restaurants, music clubs, theater and exciting nightlife.

The historic stockyards are still in operation, and herds of cattle are driven down Exchange Avenue every year, more like a theatrical performance than a banal pasture for meat. There is also a museum with an extensive collection of photographs and memorabilia from the heyday of the “ranching era”, there is even a Heritage Park, excellent stables (what is a cowboy without a horse?), a zoological park and a Japanese garden.
