rest and weather in Georgia

August in Georgia is like a crispy crust on khachapuri, hot and golden. And tourists are more like the filling in this very khachapuri – softened by rest, warmed by the Caucasian sun and salted by the Black Sea. The most delicious associations come to mind, because this is Georgia, where you best understand what a taste for life is.

How to spend an August vacation in this country with children, where to sunbathe and what to see, the Kid Passage review will tell.

Holidays in Georgia in August: pros and cons

Reviews about vacation in Georgia in August are not even worth reading. Firstly, because they are similar to vacation reviews in any other month. Secondly, well, what can be there, except for delight? The details, however, are different: someone praises the cuisine, someone praises the ancient architecture. But on most points, opinions agree:

  • the weather is sunny, very warm, but without strong heat – this will take away sadness about the approaching autumn like a hand;
  • very warm sea – you can swim a year ahead;
  • an abundance of local fruits – you definitely can’t call them plastic;
  • a variety of recreation options – you can sunbathe on the sea, be treated with mineral water in the mountains or see the sights of Tbilisi;
  • Family Fun – Kids love rides and they’ll get them.

Georgia’s cons in August are also predictable. This is a full-fledged high season, which means that there are a lot of vacationers everywhere. At this time, it is almost impossible to find good housing by the sea, and in other places the best options are already snapped up. We recommend booking a hotel room or apartment in advance.

In addition, the prices of everything are rising due to high demand. Compared to July, the rise in price is insignificant, but spending in August is very significant. Finally, the Adjarian heat or stuffiness of Tbilisi is not suitable for everyone. You need to carefully choose the time for the trip and the place of rest if you do not tolerate the heat.

Are you most interested in the item about the variety of options? We will tell you where to relax in Georgia in August. And the first reference point is weather data in different regions.

Weather in Georgia in August

If you think that summer holidays should be spent by the warm sea, then Georgia is a great option. The weather in August-September is exactly what you need to relax in seaside resorts. But for excursions it can be hot: unless you are going to the mountains, where the sun does not burn so much.

The weather in early August is usually sunny, although there are occasional cloudy days. The sea is so warm that you don’t want to get out of the water. The weather in Georgia at the end of August is no different. Unless the nights in the resorts can become a little cooler, but usually warm clothes lie idle in a suitcase.

“Cold days happen in Tbilisi and in the mountains: if you are going to Georgia in August with a child, be sure to take a jacket, sweater, trousers, closed shoes.”

The sky is cloudy from time to time, but it doesn’t rain often. On the Black Sea coast it rains a couple of times a month, in the mountains a little more often. However, showers are very stormy.

Air and water temperature

The climate of Georgia cannot be described in one word. The last month of summer is hot at sea, warm days and cold nights in the mountains, and in Tbilisi, intense heat alternates with almost autumn coolness.

Daily t Night t t water
Tbilisi +28. 2°С +17.5°C
Batumi +27.4°С +20.4°C +26.6°C
Kobuleti +27.3°С +21.4°C +26.6°C
Borjomi +25.5°C +11.0°C _
Gudauri +20.6°C +8.1°С _

The most pleasant air temperature in Georgia in August is at seaside resorts. During the day, thermometers show + 22-30 ° С, at night + 17-24 ° С. In Borjomi during the day it can be both +30°С and +16°С, and at night it gets cold up to +5-15°С. The temperature in the capital ranges from +15°С to +35°С during the day and from +14°С to +25°С at night.

But the water temperature in Georgia in August is undoubtedly pleasing, as it stays within +25-27°C. The water begins to cool no earlier than mid-September, and you can often swim in October.

Beach holiday

Resorts on the Black Sea coast of Georgia are well known since Soviet times. The advantage is that they are developing every year, modern hotels, family entertainment, and tourist infrastructure appear. The choice of places where you can relax is small, but there are relatively expensive and budget places in the country.

Here are two main options for where to go in Georgia in August. Near the big resorts there are small villages, but the conditions there are still modest.

Batumi

The main city of Adjara and the main summer resort of the country. It has everything to relax in comfort and have a good time with children.

Both at the beginning and at the end of August, the thermometers in Batumi show +22-28°C during the day and +18-24°C at night. Most of the days are sunny, sometimes partly cloudy, there are very few cloudy days, and no more than two or three rainy days. The average wind speed is only 2.6 m/s. The sea temperature is +25-27°С.

Batumi beaches stretch for 10 km. The shore and the bottom are covered with pebbles everywhere, the depth grows rapidly. In the reviews, tourists note that the beaches are mostly well-groomed, there are sunbeds for rent, changing rooms and toilets, and a rescue service is on duty. The most congested is the Central Beach, next to which there is a water park, an amusement park and a dolphinarium.

“An abundance of family entertainment attracts families with children to Batumi. In addition to those that we have mentioned, the city has a beautiful embankment, Miracle Park, amusement parks and playgrounds.”

One of the days can be devoted to excursions: look at the old Batum in the Nobel brothers’ technological museum, learn about Georgian traditions in the Borjgalo open-air ethnographic museum.

Despite the huge number of hotels, apartments and private rentals, it is difficult to find a free room in Batumi in the summer. The issue of accommodation should be taken care of long before the trip. The most hassle-free option for families with children is hotels of international chains with a decent level of service.

Kobuleti

There are no quiet resorts in August, but in Kobuleti there is still no such influx of tourists as in Batumi. There is no special choice of entertainment either, so in the town you can have a good rest with the kids.

At the beginning of August the daily temperature in the resort is set at +23-30°C, these figures remain until September. At night, the thermometers drop to +18-24°C. There are only three or four rainy days for the whole month, but occasionally there is gloomy weather without precipitation. The average wind speed is 2.8 m/s. The water temperature in the sea is +25-27°С.

The pebbly beaches of Kobuleti are long, but the service is not yet very developed – you will have to bring a mat, an umbrella, water and a snack. However, sunbeds and umbrella rentals are gradually appearing.

“To the north of the resort are the settlements of Shekvetili and Ureki. There are sandy beaches, and the dark sand is believed to have healing properties. The sea is shallow here, and pine trees grow along the coast.”

So that children do not get bored on vacation, you can go with them to the amusement park “Tsitsinatela”. They will like the “Georgia in Miniature” park, which opened in Shekvetili, and the “Music Park” of Ureki. And since the road from Kobuleti to Batumi takes only an hour, the list of attractions will include a water park, a dolphinarium and other attractions of the Adjarian capital.

The choice of housing in Kobuleti is diverse, there is an active construction of new hotels, but you can also find budget housing. There is hope that the sanatorium base will also be restored. People come to this resort to undergo a course of treatment with local mineral waters, this service is provided by wellness centers in hotels.

Rest in the mountains

If you don’t like the heat, we recommend choosing a resort not by the sea, but in the mountains. In August, there are also many vacationers, but the atmosphere is still calmer than on the coast. In addition, the Caucasus is a unique mineral water, and many come to Georgia for the sake of treatment.

Mineral water “Borjomi” is known in many countries, and the resort itself is also worth a visit. It is located in picturesque places, immersed in greenery in summer, and in early to mid-August it is still very warm here: during the day, the temperature most often stays at + 20-28 ° C, at night it drops to + 5-15 ° C.

The resort is quite comfortable: there are good hotels with health centers, pavilions with mineral water, parks with playgrounds and attractions. There are many natural attractions around, 100 km from Borjomi there is a cave complex Vardzia.

Quite a different atmosphere in the resort of Gudauri. The infrastructure here leaves much to be desired, but the mountain scenery is even more impressive than in Borjomi.

“For a holiday in the mountains, be sure to take warm clothes. In Gudauri, the August temperature can drop to +12-15°C during the day and +8-12°C at night. True, often the air warms up to + 20-28 ° C.

The main entertainment in Gudauri is hiking, cycling, rafting. There is a gondola lift on Mount Sadzele. There is a playground at the top station.

Other balneological resorts are also waiting for guests. Their main healing factors are the sun, mountain climate and mineral waters. In Tskaltubo, diseases of the cardiovascular, endocrine, peripheral nervous system, and respiratory organs are treated (the microclimate of the caves is especially useful here).

Surami has a beautiful pine forest, mineral springs, and a favorable climate for those who suffer from respiratory diseases. The village of Stepantsminda has the same resources. In addition, local mineral water is indicated for diseases of the digestive tract.

Excursion rest

August is tiringly hot in the Caucasus. But tourists always have the strength and desire to see something, and Georgia is a blessed place in this regard. If you are not ready to travel all over the country, stop in Tbilisi. The capital itself is interesting for travelers, and there are also many attractions in its immediate vicinity.

Significant places in Tbilisi – Narikala Fortress, sulfur baths that gave the city its name, ancient churches. Many people like to wander along the old streets, unofficial, but no less charming. And tourists linger at the “History of Georgia” monument and at the Rezo Gabriadze puppet theater, on the clock tower of which there is a mini-performance twice a day.

Museums in the city are designed for different visitors. In the National Museum, information is presented respectfully and strictly. In the “Experimentorium” fun reigns, even though it is a science museum. The ethnographic open-air museum is very lively, although it tells about the past.

And here are the sights located near Tbilisi:

  • Mtskheta, one of the oldest cities in Georgia, whose objects are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List;
  • the cave city of Uplistsikhe, where ancient and medieval structures have been preserved;
  • medieval cave monasteries of David Gareja, some of which are located on the territory of Azerbaijan;
  • Birtvisi canyon, overgrown with almost tropical vegetation.

During your vacation at the sea, you can also go on excursions. There are several museums in Batumi, including the Adjara State Museum and the Nobel Brothers Technological Museum. It doesn’t take long to drive to the Makhuntseti waterfall, next to which stands a thousand-year-old arched bridge. But in the national parks of Mtirala and Kolkheti, routes of different lengths are laid – you can go hiking for several hours or several days.

Of course, it is more interesting to rent a car and travel around all regions of Georgia: see the Svan towers, monasteries and fortresses of Kakheti, the ancient city of Vani in Imereti, the Colchis forests of Adjara. But if there is no time for everything or the children are too small for such trips, visit the Georgia in Miniature park, which is near Kobuleti. Small replicas of the Rabat Fortress and Gelati Monastery look just as beautiful as the originals.

Entertainment for children

So that children do not act up on vacation, they need a variety of leisure activities. For example, swimming in the sea in the morning, walking in the park in the afternoon, going to the amusement park in the evening. There are no large-scale entertainments in Georgia, but children will definitely not get bored here.

A favorite place for a family vacation in Tbilisi is the amusement park on Mount Mtatsminda. However, the children also like the children’s railway in Mushtaidi Park, the modern playgrounds of Rike Park, and the active entertainment zone in Astra Park.

On a hot day, your feet will carry you to the Gino Paradise water park. Having tried all the slides, lie down on a sun lounger near the wave pool: you will immediately feel that you are sunbathing on the seashore.

To emerge from the dense crowd of tourists, which are so numerous in Tbilisi in summer, head to the botanical garden. There are many shady corners with benches, there is a playground. True, there is only one cafe on the territory of 128 hectares, so if necessary, bring food and drink with you.

In Batumi, the resort whirlwind takes tourists to a small water park, dolphinarium and aquarium. In the evening, everyone goes to the Miracle Park. This is a pedestrian zone, decorated with unusual sculptures. Next to it rises a Ferris wheel. There are singing fountains on the embankment. It seems difficult to surprise someone like this, but laser projections on water mist are still fascinating.

Near Kobuleti there is an amusement park “Tsitsinatela”, or “Firefly”. Of the dozens of attractions, half are designed for families with kids, half for extreme lovers. It is also interesting to visit the “Music Park”. Here, in a eucalyptus grove, metal sculptures depicting famous performers are placed.

Holidays, events and festivals

The calendar of holidays in Georgia in August is not full of red days. The only event that is honored with solemn services is Mariamoba , or the day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary . The Virgin Mary is considered the patroness of Georgians, because, according to legend, she promised intercession to the inhabitants of Iveria, an ancient state in eastern Georgia.

Many tourists come to the country at the end of summer, hoping to get to the young wine festival . Indeed, at this time, grapes are already being sold in the markets with might and main, however, the collection of berries for winemaking and the holidays dedicated to this do not begin until mid-September. Only occasionally, if the summer is very hot and dry, the Rtveli holiday is postponed to the last days of August.

Vacation prices

The tourist season is in full swing, and prices in Georgia in August reflect this. You can count on small savings only if you buy tickets and book a hotel long before the trip.

Air tickets

Tickets to seaside resorts in August cost about the same as in July. In mid-September, prices usually fall by 2-5%. A flight to Tbilisi rises in price by 3-5% compared to July, in September the price may rise by the same amount.

Hotels

Demand for accommodation in August is as high as in July, and prices in hotels and apartments do not fall. They either remain at the July level, or rise by 5-10%. In September, housing, if cheaper, is insignificant.

Tours

Tourists come to Georgia on their own more often than buy tours. If you want to shift all the worries onto the shoulders of travel agencies, get ready for the fact that the trip will cost 10-15% more than in July. With the advent of autumn, prices will gradually drop.

Catering

Since Georgian cuisine is akin to a tourist attraction, travelers really want to join it. If you try khinkali, chakhokhbili or chikhirtma in a tourist place, you will have to pay at least 7-10 lari. The farther from the main routes, the cheaper the food: for the same 10 GEL you can have a hearty lunch.

“Baking, the main Georgian snack, costs 2-2.5 lari. For this money you can buy a big khachapuri, penovani or kubdari.”

Shops and supermarkets will please those who like to cook their own food. True, in small resorts the choice in stores is very poor.

It is better to buy fruits, vegetables, nuts in the markets. According to reviews about holidays in Georgia in August, 1 kilogram of cucumbers, potatoes, onions costs less than 1 lari, tomatoes – up to 2 lari, peaches – 1. 5-2 lari, figs – 3.5 lari, grapes – 7-8 lari. Watermelons are sold at 0.5 lari per 1 kg, melons – at 1 lari per 1 kg. A kilogram of apples and pears will cost about 2 GEL. In August, they start selling fresh churchkhela, a favorite treat for children and adults. The approximate price per piece is 1-2 GEL.

Shopping

Probably all travelers bring Georgian delicacies with them. The most serious purchases are cheeses and wines. Sauces take up little space in a suitcase, so you can grab a couple of jars of tkemali or satsebeli. Seasonings are cheap and weightless: bring with you Imereti saffron, ucho-suneli, kondari or the well-known mixture of suneli hops.

Stores in Georgia hold sales in August. The range and prices of European brands of clothing and footwear are not encouraging, but among the products of local manufacturers you can find high-quality original items.

Tips for traveling with children

Rest in Georgia in August with children is always remembered. However, I want only good things to be remembered. And for this you need to properly prepare for the trip and do not forget about safety at the resorts.

  1. It is very easy to burn out in the sun in August. Rest on the beach, excursions in open areas, walking is better not to plan for the period from 11:00 to 16:00.
  2. Don’t forget sunscreen and hats.
  3. Take drinking water with you on walks and excursions.
  4. Air humidity is high in Adjara, so things take a long time to dry. Take plenty of changes of clothes for little kids. We also recommend taking several sets of bathing accessories.
  5. If you are going to rest with a baby in a small resort village, stock up on baby food on the way.
  6. It can suddenly get cold in the mountains, and the nights in August are always cold. Take warm clothes, even if the forecast for your trip promises heat.

Service at the hotel also affects how you will remember your vacation. In the Kid Passage collection you will find hotels and apartments where they create conditions for families with children. Take off your worries during your vacation – let you have time for new experiences.

Caucasian Knot | Kirtadze: kindergartens and nurseries in Georgia will be privatized

23 August 2007, 22:10

The privatization of kindergartens and nurseries by the Georgian authorities was discussed at today’s press conference at the office of the Labor Party of Georgia.

Labor representative Nestan Kirtadze called the planned liquidation of kindergartens “an act of barbarity.”

“We have in our hands a list of kindergartens to be liquidated compiled by the Tbilisi City Hall. As an example, I can cite the 181st kindergarten located in the Isani-Samgori region,” reported the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent Nestan Kirtadze.

Labor also warned potential future investors not to take such a rash step by buying vacated premises. According to them, the time of the current government has already passed.

“Their timer is already on. Soon they will have to leave the corridors of power, new forces will come who will declare all previous transactions illegal and take away their property,” Nestan Kirtadze said.

Kindergartens and nurseries ceased to be accountable to the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia and fell under the competence of local self-government bodies.

As the “Caucasian Knot” has already reported, yesterday, August 22, the leader of the “Kartuli Dasi” party, Jondip Bagaturia, said that the wave of eviction and privatization in Georgia would also affect libraries.

“All the capital’s libraries, except for the Public Library, will be thrown out into the street and books will be destroyed. In the future, the library buildings will be sold, and all employees will be left without work,” Jondi Bagaturia told the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent.

Jondi Bagaturia added that a similar fate awaits employees of Georgian railways.

The leader of the “Kartuli Party” called on the population of Georgia to come to the Parliament on August 23 for a rally in order to resist the arbitrariness of the authorities.

Recall that the opposition Labor Party of Georgia accuses the family of President Mikheil Saakashvili of “hidden privatization” of Georgian Railway LLC. Recently, a huge railway enterprise was taken over by the British company Parkfield Investment.

Gugava promised in the near future to prove the involvement of Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili in the management of the railway company.
